2015 Free Agency Master Thread--Get to it, Faust! (1 Viewer)

Charles Robinson ‏@CharlesRobinson

An opportunity has opened for #Jaguars with DeMarco Murray. They want a centerpiece back and could push hard to price #Cowboys way out.

Looks to me like we could have another Randall Cobb situation here. You have to think it would be in Murray's best interest (long term) to take less and go back to the Cowboys.
Big difference between taking a couple million a year less when you've got a fairly certain 6-8 more years remaining in your career, and doing it when you have 3-4 if everything goes right and could be done for good at any time. RBs can't really afford to leave $$ on the table during their 2nd contract. Murray's already 27.
Good point.

Appears as if the league's "legal tamper window" rules have been tampered with. Free agency has clearly already begun.
I wonder if the NFL is just fine with this and will turn a blind eye, or if Goodell is sitting there fuming right now.
Edit to say it more clearly.

I don't understand Eisen's issue here. In the past, several top players would sign at 12:01 AM. The only way that happened was through tampering, and unless the league decided to put a stop to it, the only way a team could compete with it was to also cheat.

With how it works now, all of these announcements of having reached agreement have come after a period of time where everyone could legally talk to the player. Everyone had a chance to legally contact the agent and let them know their interest level.

In addition, in the past some teams who had players testing free agency wouldn't have been able to wait to hear back from the player after he'd tested the waters. If they did, they might miss out on the only other options in the FA pool who could replace him adequately, so they had to move on in some cases. This year we've seen a number of higher end players who got a chance to test the market and then re-signed with their own team.

The new rule has removed most of the benefit of cheating. That teams and players are working out legally what they'll do once free agency opens, instead of illegally, is the whole point of it.

One source told the Baltimore Sun that free agent Torrey Smith signing with the 49ers is a "done deal."
It can't hurt that Torrey has stayed tight with Anquan Boldin since playing across from him in Baltimore. The Sun floats $8 million to $9 million as Smith's likely price tag. The Ravens are less than $5 million under the cap and couldn't match such an offer. The Sun also confirms Andre Johnson "would be regarded as a potential fit" to replace Torrey opposite Steve Smith Sr.

Raiders agreed to terms with C Rodney Hudson on a five-year, $44.5M contract.

After missing out on big-ticket targets like Ndamukong Suh and Randall Cobb, the Raiders finally found someone to take their money. It comes in the form of paying a center an average annual salary of a league-high $8.9 million, more than Maurkice Pouncey ($8.8M) and Alex Mack ($8.4). It's obviously a ton of coin, but Hudson was PFF's No. 3 overall center while starting all 16 games for the Chiefs last year. He'll be a significant upgrade on Stefan Wisniewski.

The Texans have reached a deal with Brian Hoyer, according to NBC4's Dianna Marie Russini.

Aside from maybe the Jets or Bills, no team was more desperate for a quarterback than the Texans. Hoyer isn't a game-changer, but he's about the best Houston could do in a thin quarterback market. It's still possible the Texans could bring back Ryan Mallett and have him compete with Hoyer for the starting job. It's been reported by the New York Post that the Jets would likely pick up whichever quarterback Houston decides to discard, likely Mallett or Ryan Fitzpatrick. The latter of those two is still under contract. ESPN's Adam Caplan said on Twitter the Jets are still making a late push for Hoyer, but Russini is usually spot on with her reporting.

Per @Rand_Getlin, #49ers are expecting LB Patrick Willis to retire. #NFL
That's incredible if true. The Niners will really be awful if he does. They're already going to struggle. Crazy because they looked like they were building something really good just 2 years ago.
Teams could be a lot more awful at the LB position than having Navarro Bowman, Chris Borland, and Michael Wilhote. Yeah, its a huge blow anytime you lose a great player and, as a whole, the Niners look like a shell of themselves just a couple of years ago, but as a unit, LB is not bare.

Texans sign both Hoyer and Mallett.

NFL sources confirm Ryan Mallett has agreed to a contract with the Texans. It's a 2-year deal.

Ryan Mallett's deal with the #Texans is a 2 year deal worth $7 million. Expecting Hoyer's to be bigger.

Jayson Braddock ‏@JaysonBraddock 3m3 minutes ago
Brian Hoyer's contract is expected to be 3 years and in the range of $12-14 million. Getting more due to playing experience.
Texans also re-signed RFA WR Damaris Johnson to a 1 yr, $1m contract.

Miami Beach baby!
His first thought of being excited about the beach should thrill Miami fans.
Yeah, big men don't normally gravitate heat and humidity. Getting a real Albert Haynesworth vibe on this cat.
He doesn't want to pay state taxes on the giant contract he's signing.
I doubt that's anywhere in the top 25 reasons in his factoring.

By and large, while it IS real money, the savings aren't worthy of life changing decisions.

Players still pay federal tax.

THey still pay up to the max on FICA.

They still pay 1.45% on Medicare of their salary.

They still pay the 35% on those big bonuses.

They still pay city tax, which can easily be more overall in a city like Miami over, say, playing in KC.

Every time they play a road game (half their salary on the year, those cities require pro-rated two days salary paid to their cities because they are "working" in their cities.

The cost of living" Detroit Michigan or Miami Florida? Which city is your dollar going to go farther?

Associated costs of selling a house and purchasing another, relocating, putting kids in different schools, etc, etc.

If it were as simple as the no state tax, everyone would want to play for the Bears (Ill, 3%) and nobody would want to play in California (10.3~%).

THis comes down to lifestyle and that's fine. Maybe he even has family or something or a business venture. But any way you slice it, if you choose to move from Detroit to Miami because of state taxes on your regular wages, you're cutting your nose off to spite your face.

I think I read that signing with a team in Florida would save him roughly $20M over the course of the contract.

ETA:

Suh would have lost more than $15 million signing a contract of equal value in Oakland and a little less than $5 million signing a contract of equal value in Detroit. Taxes at all levels of government, in fact, would have gobbled up more than half of the 2010 Defensive Rookie of the Year’s income had he signed with Oakland.
Not exactly chump change.

49ers free-agent G Mike Iupati has told people he plans to sign with the Arizona Cardinals, per sources. Iupati vs. SF DT Darnell Dockett.
Surprise this wasn't posted. Good news for Ellington. Bad news for Hyde.

After a four-team race between Titans, Seahawks, Jets and Ravens for Cary Williams, sources say the Seahawks are going to be the winner.

I kind of want a few of these "done deals" to not actually happen. Not because of the players or the teams but because I don't like the media has already decided it's set in stone. Even MFL has already switched Julius Thomas to JAC

Blame their agents, friends, families, and the players themselves. Not the media. The media is just reporting the leaks.

We live in a world of fast paced social media where timing of information is THE thing.

It's not acceptable to simply report the news these days, sometimes you have to manufacture it and then hope it falls that way in order to be able to "break" a story.

I agree with you guys. I wish it was "tell me what happened", not "tell me the 20 most likely guesses of what you think is likely to happen".

It's almost sentimental to think of the old days where you wake up and see a lot of action occurred. Then you go to lunch and hear that so and so is getting on a plane to visit "X" city. There is some anticipation there.

I got an email from the NFL just a while ago re: the NFL FA "frenzy". I guess the NFL likes it this way.

You mean like Gore to Philly?

I'm excited, but don't really know what for at this point. This is almost as bad as tipping the draft picks right before they happen.
