2015 Houston Texans Thread (1 Viewer)

Some thoughts after the 3rd preseason game.

Had hoped Polk would look better than he did today. It wasn't exactly the best blocking anyone has had, but I thought he left some yards on the field tonight.

Rick Smith gets a lot of criticism for his drafts, and a lot of it is deserved. But that said... going into last season it felt like Houston had 2 CBs and no one behind them that should even see the field. Now we've seen the guys he picked up last year and he did well. They have 3 worthy of being in a team's starting pair in JJo, Kareem and KJo. But then more impressive is behind them there's at least another 3 vying to be CB4 who are probably good enough to be above average CB3s. And actually if you count Andre Hal who moved to safety and may start, it would be 4. And that isn't even counting James II, who I don't know if he's a good enough corner to add into that group, but with his special teams and versatility, they have to find a way to keep him on the team. Yes, lots of draft picks missed and criticism of Smith is still warranted, but he hasn't completely fallen on his face in getting talent onto the team.

Speaking of corners, if they don't keep 7, I wonder how much chance Bouye is the odd man out. He's made a lot of mistakes in preseason.

I feel pretty decent about safety going into the season. Not a sure thing they will be a strength, but I like our chances there better than last year. I hope they find a way to keep Demps.

Hoyer and Mallett both played pretty well, though Mallett got off to a slow start. Savage looked decent too for that matter.

I mentioned to a friend at the 2nd preseason game that I wondered if Mumphrey might beat out the other receivers for the 5th WR spot. He could end up as the primary returner. He had some ups and downs again this week as a receiver. Before this I'd kind of felt it was Damaris Johnson's spot to lose, and at least in games haven't seen a lot from him that I can recall. I wonder if he's losing it. I'm assuming Jaelen Strong gets the 4th spot. I could even see Keshawn Martin getting the 5th spot ahead of Damaris. But Mumphrey is still my surprise pick to make the roster there.

Anyone else get the feeling that our 4th and 5th TEs may not be much worse than our top 3? And I say that half as compliment to Khari Lee and Denham, and half as insult to Graham, Griffin and Fiedorowicz.
That is some rick smith spin. Maybe his undrafted guys stick around because he can't pick anybody in rounds 2-6 to save his life.

I wasn't the only one noticing the other tight ends....

Houston Texans TE Khari Lee was traded to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a sixth-round pick Wednesday, Sept. 2.

Gah, browser crashed and ate my post.

Texans cuts per Chronicle sources: DT Louis Nix, DL Tevita Finau, RB Kenny Hilliard, safety Corey More, C James Ferentz, WR EZ Nwachukwu, WR Chandler Worthy, LB Max Bullough, DL Brandon Deaderick, WR Damaris Johnson, OLB Kourtnei Brown, OL Matt Feiler

Nix I tried watching specifically in the 4th preseason game. I recall one nice play he had and a lot of doing little more than holding his ground or being pushed backwards. Word is RAC said he's improved, but obviously not enough. Covington looked much better but not sure how he'd do at NT in the base defense.

Hilliard I don't think made a case to make the team so not surprised there. I mentioned in the Hard Knocks thread I wondered if they were considering Charles James at RB in part so he could be an emergency RB in case they cut Hilliard. Though Grimes would also be a question mark there, I wonder if he's going to make the team. I still like Polk over Blue while Foster is out, but expect the team goes with Blue.

Too bad to see Brown get cut just from watching him on Hard Knocks. Despite making some good plays he seemed to lack consistency so not very surprised there.

So I'm wondering if it's going to be Mumphrey or Keshawn Martin that makes the team at WR. Assuming they only keep 5 WRs. I'd say it's pretty even right now but I'd keep Mumphrey based on potential.

Tom Savage, severely sprained right throwing shoulder. Won't need surgery but out "a significant period of time". Good chance they may pick up another QB, or at the least have one on the practice squad so there is someone who knows the offense waiting in the wings.

Alright, so prediction time. I'm going intentionally conservative here.

Call these games losses, 0-3:

Patriots

Indy x2

Call these 5 games toss ups, and saying 3-3 in them.

Chiefs

Dolphins

Bengals

Saints

Panthers

Bills

Call these favoring the Texans, give them 5-2 in them.

Jax x2

Tennessee x2

Jets

Bucs

Falcons

So I guess I'm predicting conservatively at 8-8 . But 9 or 10 wins are very realistic too. So are fewer though.

Oof, Nix. Another great Rick Smith pick. I honestly feel like they don't fully vet the players that aren't in their range for their pick. Then they fall all over themselves when someone "falls" without realizing there is probably a good reason they are falling. See Nix, Mercilous, and I feel like Strong might fall into this category.

I feel this team is 6-10 waiting to happen...i am more than willing to be wrong on that.

The Texans are cutting rookie outside linebacker Lynden Trail, rookie offensive tackle Joseph Treadwell along with defensive ends Fili Moala and Dan Pettinato, according to a source speaking on condition of anonymity Saturday.

6-10 is a lot more realistic. 8-8 may be close to a ceiling for this team. Just utterly devoid of offensive talent.

How does that fool still have a job? He spreads the wealth around locally but as far as front office, dude is rubbish.

NT Louis Nix III
How bad was this guy?

ETA: claimed by the Giants.
We'll trade up for this turd but not a QB like Bridgewater... or any QB. Hell even if we missed on the pick at least we would have tried to get a decent QB...
Worst draft ever…You draft a lemon at #1 and don't trade up one pick for a promising QB who you desperately need. Instead you cast your ballot on a prayer with Savage (bust) and Mallett (fools gold).

Charles James went to the Ravens practice squad.

Kourtnei Brown was picked up by Tampa Bay on waivers.

Nix was claimed from waivers by the Giants.

Not totally devoid of talent. DeAndre Hopkins is a true #1 WR. Arian Foster, assuming he comes back healthy is a top RB. I think Hoyer in this system will be better than people expect. The offensive line, at least the starters, are pretty good (no depth behind them).

The defense is going to be very good if not exceptional this year.

I think 10-6 is the ceiling, but only if they start on the right foot with a win against the Chiefs without Arian. If they lose to the Chiefs, I think 8-8 is much more likely.

For what it is worth, I think Bill O'Brien is a very good coach, and with the defense they have, I don't see them having as few as 6 wins (especially since 4 of their games are against Jacksonville and Tennessee).

Louis Nix was claimed off waivers by the Giants. But failed his physical and has been cut again.

You know, Rick Smith seems to fail in picking guys who are self motivated workers. Nix came in unprepared last year, and Suafilo supposedly came to camp out of shape this year. Both of them got hurt after coming to camp out of shape. Does Rick Smith do any due diligence on how hard these guys work?

I wish Bob McNair would do some due diligence on how bad Rick Smith is... when you see all of these miserably failed draft picks the last few years it really is alarming

Mohamed is out another 2-4 weeks. Akeem Dent to start in his place.

The Texans ruled out five injured players for Sunday’s season-opener against the Kansas City Chiefs at NRG Stadium.

That includes left offensive guard Xavier Su’a-Filo (calf, ankle), starting inside linebacker Mike Mohamed (calf), who’s out two to four weeks, safety Lonnie Ballentine (knee swelling), Pro Bowl running back Arian Foster (groin surgery) and outside linebacker Carlos Thompson (concussion). All of those players didn’t practice Friday except for Thompson, who was limited.

Jeff Adams will start at left guard. Akeem Dent will line up with the starters in the base defense at inside linebacker. And Alfred Blue will start at running back.

Sucks that Mohamed is out. Really good coverage LB. I think he graded out as like the 7th best coverage linebacker according to pro football focus. With Kelce coming in here this Sunday, look out. Hope RAC can come up with a plan. I'm thinking this is another 9-7 season.

My short prediction for overall record

Middle of the pack team and I am more negative on the prospects of the offense than i was hoping to be. I think there is not a grand difference between 6-10 and 10-6 in this league, mostly injury, a couple of bounces the right/wrong way and a handful of performances unexpected transforms teams one way or the other from 8-8. unfortunately a am more fearful of 6-10 than hopeful of 10-6, so I am going to go 7-9.

vs. Kansas city...low scoring close (maybe boring, especially offensively) 20-17 texans win..not a true upset if KC flips this in my mind.

9-7 for the season, but the offense probably has to play above and beyond to get there. Defense should be nasty, especially in the secondary. We look very deep there. Let's just hope some of these draft picks show they aren't total busts yet like Nix.

I'm thinking Texans get off to a miserable start (1-3) and then make a small run of victories to keep it respectable at 7-9 in typical Kubiak style. Rick Smith keeps his job.

The constant see-sawing of this team is very frustrating considering the talent they've HAD in a relatively weak division. The future does not look bright due to piss poor drafts.

I'll say this much: I really hope preseason does mean nothing. Because if Bortles and Mariota keep playing and growing like they did this preseason, we might be in the basement the next couple of years behind 3 true franchise QBs in the AFC South. Watt can't do everything by himself.

I'm interested in how you Texans homers see the breakdown of the RB carries this week... Blue will start, I would assume. Do you guys think Grimes gets some work today? Polk on 3rd downs? Mostly Blue?

I think (no insiders info, etc) blue gets the most, grimes in the mix and Polk makes a cameo. guess is that the Texans pass more than expected.

If we're going to suck this year, I hope we really suck. We need a franchise QB. It's time to stop thinking we can hopefully find the next Brady and draft a top QB.

We had the opportunity to do that before. I'm sure this time we'll draft a RB.

Forgot to mention that we also have to get rid of Rick Smith or he'll botch it like you suggest.

Might as well start Mallett next week. Though I don't know that I'm putting a whole lot of stock in how he did once he came in since he was pretty much facing a prevent defense at that point. Still, Hoyer looked like a deer in headlights at times, and just plain inaccurate. Think they got into his head, and some of that pressure seemed to be him not getting rid of the ball. Mallett at least gets rid of it quick, but I can see him giving up a bunch of picks too.

Hoyer was terrible right out of the gate, so can't blame this game on the officials but they blew a blatant PI in the first quarter on a deep pass to Shorts that would've put us in the red zone. Instead we punted. That was a game changer. Later there was a PI, which wasn't as blatant as the first one, in the end zone. Both should've been called and were discussed by the announcers. Despite the terrible play, just one of thsoe two missed calls would've put us in the game.

It is worth noting that I have no doubt Shorts would've dropped the pass had he not bee interfered with. Pointless signing - injury prone + bad hands. But as I mentioned earlier, Nate Washington was our best offensive signing. Maybe we can move the ball with Mallett next week.

Texans snap counts:

Running back Jonathan Grimes didn’t start, but he played more than starter Alfred Blue as he got 41 snaps (53 percent) and rushed for 28 yards on six carries and caught one pass for two yards. Blue played 22 snaps (29 percent) and rushed for a team-high 42 yards on nine carries as he averaged 4.7 yards per carry. Running back Chris Polk played 14 snaps (18 percent), rushing for 22 yards on five carries and caught one pass for nine yards.

I can't believe some speculation I'm reading here and there that Mallett is still 2nd string. Please tell me I'll never have to watch Brian Hoyer try to play football ever again.

Even Schaub got multiple starts despite throwing constant pick 6's. Coaches think guys can turn it around sometimes.

Have no confidence in either of our QB's. The defense looked lost at times despite Watt playing out of his mind as usual. Lets suck for Hackenburg or Cardale or whomever.

Colts refuse to address their defensive woes and they will lose the salary cap discount on Luck soon. If we can ever find a QB we should be able to hang with them. I'm not worried about Tenn or Jax, both still look terrible. Lets wait and see Mariota play someone other than the worst team in the nfl before worrying too much.

I heard some talk yesterday that the interception on the first offensive play of the game was Hopkins fault because he ran the wrong route. If that is true, why wasn't Hoyer yelling at DeAndre to do a better job? When they showed him on the bench, he already looked defeated, and Mallett was trying to prop him up, give him some encouragement. The worst thing about Hoyer other than his mediocre skills is that he shows no leadership and lets his past mistakes affect his future play. I think Mallett comes across as kind of a dumb redneck, but at least he's got some fire and passion, and is trying to inspire the guys around him. I was giving Bill O'Brien the benefit of the doubt when it came to evaluating his QB talent, but if there are many more performances like last Sunday and I will really begin to question his supposed QB guru reputation.

Yes, don't want to sit through watching another game like that. It wasn't unexpected Hoyer might have a horrid game along the way, but when it's his first game, ouch.

I was hoping Mallett would earn the job in preseason, hopefully they go with him now and he ends up being something. Though from what I saw in preseason I'd agreed Mallett didn't beat out Hoyer based on preseason at least.

If they do go back to Hoyer, there is at least some hope in that not everything was his fault. (Yes, that's me looking for a positive.) I heard the same about Hopkins on the first pick, and noticed another play that looked horrible as Hoyer was blitzed, but it was probably Shorts fault for not breaking off his route to a hot route when the guy up in press on him on the line blitzed instead, leaving Hoyer no outlet against unblocked blitzers.

But Hoyer was inaccurate, far more than I'd have expected. If that continues it won't matter if everyone else does their job.
