His accuracy has always been in question...so in that sense i was not surprised...More unexpected was he was actually pulled quickly and not allowed to work it through. I wonder that when (I mean if) Mallet struggles will the leash be as short?

The difference between Hoyer and Mallet that I saw, was decisiveness. Hoyer you could see wasn't able or was scared to act on his decision making and the pass rush got to him. Mallet made some quick decisions and got rid of it quick. They looked night and day.

Mallett was very decisive last year in the first game he started against Cleveland. He was getting the ball out quickly and the offense looked much better. The second game against Cincinnati he was also decisive but was very inaccurate due to his rib injury (we think). So I think Mallett will do well until teams start taking away his first option and making him go to a secondary receiver. Then we will see what kind of a QB he really is.

Had an argument about this while the game was going on, about impact to be concerned with in potentially yanking Hoyer in game 1.
The issue I was bringing up is, if you get to a point that you're frequently yanking whoever is having a bad stretch, you can get in your own players heads. You want any player to have a short memory and put a bad play behind them. Having them constantly worrying about getting pulled for a couple of bad plays can lead to more bad plays and snowball in the wrong direction.
Hopefully Mallett proves worthy of starting all year and ends up a competent starter, so no need to yank him too. I hope that happens but I did not enter the season thinking either was more likely to reach that level of competence than not.

RE: mallett v. hoyer, from what we saw in Hard Knocks, I can't help but wonder if the real reason Hoyer got the nod at first was simply down to professionalism. Granted that's a whole reality TV distortion field but Mallett definitely seemed more immature.

I will take an immature Alpha Dog any day as my QB, as long as he wins on Sunday. He has all the tools to excel, we will see over the next few games. Texans need to find out if he is the answer before the next draft.sounds like a good deal to me.

Like the trade we lose a player that was not going to play much if at all and putting Worthy on the 53 man roster may well upgrade our suspect return game. He is pretty quick also.

agree 100% with you there, just speculating as to why they didn't go with Mallett in the first place. Doesn't seem like it's because Hoyer is better at the job so thought maybe other stuff/politics had to do with it.

Finally. This solidifies my thought that the whole retractable roof thing in Houston was a mistake. Now they can just keep the roof closed all the time (except maybe a few games with cool weather in November and December).
This got me thinking of the biggest mistakes made by the Texans organization. In roughly Chronological order:
1) Deciding to have Grass field and retractable roof for Stadium
2) Hiring Charley Casserly
3) Picking David Carr rather than Julius Peppers with an expansion offensive line and a defensive minded head coach
4) Letting Connor Barwin leave
5) Wearing Letterman jackets to NE
6) Giving Cushing a new contract before they needed to.
7) Not firing Rick Smith yet
8) Having too many blown draft picks in rounds 2-4 (see #2 and #7)
9) Not finding a way to have a franchise QB with JJ Watt in his prime (see #7)

His time is almost done. He deserved better out of this organization but he will not be missed on the field.

If RM is what we hope he is, Watt is not even in his prime yet.

Hello Texans fans, how do you guys see the defense doing this year? First game vs KC was rough but that seemed partly due to the offensive woes, but now with Clowney getting playing time, Mallett starting and Foster returning, I think the DST is about to get a lot better in the next couple weeks. Do you agree?

Problem with this is there aren't any franchise type QBs in this next draft class. Better than what you have now, of course, but not top tier talent that is franchise changing.
To be fair, any defense would get tired having to keep going back out there after all the 3 and Outs that Bill O'Brien's brilliant, complex, difficult offense was providing. I'm glad they switched to Mallett, but man this offensive line is garbage. And no decent depth behind the starters. Hell, we look like we miss Chris Myers, who supposedly wasn't a "fit" for this offense. Duane Brown hurt. Newton got paid after one good season. Sua-Filo injured AND probably a bust at pick 33 overall. When Mallett wasn't throwing the ball at WRs feet, the WRs couldn't handle the fastballs he was throwing in their hands. He probably should've been picked off a few times. Running game stinks, but again, this oline is awful. So disappointed in what O'Brien is running, and I am...or WAS...a hardcore believer.
Rick Smith should've been fired with Kubiak.

The defense really needs to step up this week. Losing to TB at home would really be crushing as I am sure it is one of the games 99% of the fans had as a win before the season. The offense will be without Foster, Brown, and possibly Hopkins which are their 3 best players on offense. The defense needs to force turnovers and probably needs to hold them below 13 points. This is one of those games that you count on Watt to make some plays to win you the game.

I'm normally a pretty open critic of Blue, so should say he did a good job yesterday. The Cleveland game last year I thought was mostly due to the O-line. But yesterday I thought Blue ran well and found holes. Gained some extra yards making people miss (I am looking at you, Swearinger) and ran tough.
Not enough to turn a year's worth of opinion around, but maybe it can be a start for him.
Joseph had a good outing after not looking so great the first two games. The Bucs sold out to stop JJ a lot from what I saw. Clowney got some pressures I believe, but troubling we weren't able to get much more pressure than that. I don't think they blitzed much though, either.

Randy Bullock cut and Nick Novak signed.
Novak did kickoffs for San Diego the last 2 years. And he was absolutely ATROCIOUS at them. 13% touchback rate last year, and 20% the year before. Pretty much the very bottom of the league. Whenever possible in my league that has a team return unit, I would just pick up whoever was playing San Diego that week, because of Novak.
Lechler incidentally, only has kicked off 9 times in his career, with 8 of them being returned.

I know Bullock missed a few XPs and a FG already this season but IIRC he was pretty good with kickoffs. Seems like maybe they could have kept Fat Randy for kickoffs and got Novak just for FGs. But really stats wise Novak doesn't look much (if any) better than Bullock on FGs so if Novak is as bad as all that on kickoffs this whole changes seems questionable to me.

Not sure how the rest of the season is going to play out. The division is so weak that I think the Texans will probably be in the hunt until the end.
Regardless, I want two things to happen in the offseason:
1) Rick Smith gets fired
2) We draft or trade for someone who will be our franchise QB, and stop playing backup QB roulette.

what % of this debacle is the fault of Bo'B? what % Crennel? I mean, Hoyer and Mallet both seem pretty limited but isn't it the coach's job to get the most out of the players? Are our QB's really so bad that they're incapable of putting up *any* non-garbage time points against the Falcons? And on paper our defense still seems like it should be strong but obviously allowing damn near 50 points means something is very very wrong on the defensive side of the ball.
I still can't comprehend how we got from 2012 to this. It was a thing of beauty in 2012 watching Kubiak's playbook really click with Schaub and Foster and Andre. And J.J. Watt leading a stifling defense. Then 2013 rolls around and Schaub just inexplicably kept ####ting the bed. I still have no idea how we went from being a pretty darn good team to worst in the NFL in just one year. And now it seems we're doomed to be firmly on the sucky side of mediocre for the forseeable future based on yesterday.
I guess this is just monday morning blues talking but I'm really disappointed that we can't at least keep it respectable.

All of the Atlanta reserves were in, and they were playing prevent.
Basically both QB's are, and have looked like, back-up QB's. O'Brien is not going to win a whole lot with either.
In game one, when things went poorly, Hoyer looked shellshocked. Mallett just seems like a good ol' boy who might have difficulties grasping all the nuances of a 2015 offensive scheme.

His career long in 8 seasons in the NFL is 52 yards and he does not have a big leg. I would have much rather the Texans tried a hail mary than try that FG. Better payoff with probably a similar probability of being achieved.

yes, he had a limited upside, but so does Hoyer (never played as good as average Fitz) and mallet would need to have outplayed him just the same. actually paid more mmoney to get a worse "not the answer" Qb.
Have the game recorded, not sure I even want to watch it on fast forward based on what I've read. True litmus test on how bad we are will be the Jags/Titans games IMO.
Such a missed opportunity, Colts are falling apart, Ten & Jax still major works in progress. Our division winner will be a lame duck in the playoffs.
