2015 Houston Texans Thread (1 Viewer)

It’s not often you hear this particular phrase used in conjunction with sports, but NBC Sports analyst Rodney Harrison said he “had the displeasure” of watching the Texans-Dolphins game on tape this week.

What Harrison saw, he said, “is a team that is completely discouraged. And I think you look at (coach) Bill O’Brien, and I think he kinda started this stuff from the summertime, naming a starter and switching back and forth.”

Harrison said he’s been on really good teams and a couple of really bad ones, and nothing is more discouraging than uncertainty at quarterback. But, being a former defensive back, what really stood out to him in the Texans’ loss to Miami was Houston’s defensive collapse.

“You saw some of their key players not even hustling,” Harrison said. “One guy I particular who I love, Brian Cushing, I saw him loaf on a couple of plays. And it was surprising to me that a guy who has a reputation of work ethic and things like that to loaf on a couple of plays like that.”

As for the recently released Ryan Mallett, Harrison, a former Patriot, said a contact in New England told him that Mallett “walked around in a sense like he was God’s gift to the earth and he had it all figured out.”

Under any circumstances, he said, “If you’re a quarterback, there is no excuse to you being late to the facility, missing a plane. You should be one of the first guys at the facility, point blank.”

Jets at Raiders: The Texans had Ryan Fitzpatrick and Ryan Mallett last season and somehow they gave away the better of the two. It has to hurt watching Fitzpatrick throw for a meager 86.1 passer rating and realize you could have had THAT. Ohhhh, what Bill O’Brien would give for an 86.1-rated passer right now. He’d fill his chin cleft with joint compound for that.*

*Shockingly, Fitzpatrick had even better stats with the Texans last season than he does with the Jets this season. His yards per attempt were better. His completion percentage was better. He had a decent TD:INT ratio. Kinda makes you wonder why they ever get rid of him. Seriously, what kind of beef-brained ####head runs that Houston team?

1 game out of 1st place in the division :bag:
It is just pants-on-head crazy to me that if (when) the Colts lose to the Panthers and if we beat the Titans, we officially have a shot at a playoff spot. I just don't know why I should care though because there is literally no way this team will do anything if they did get a playoff game.

I don't know if there has been a division where all 4 coaches could be fired at the end of the year.

Pagano - Good record, but has relied a lot on Andrew Luck. Last year of contract and doesn't have a good relationship with the GM. Could be gone.

Whisenhunt - 4-30 record in his last 34 games. That is hard to do. I assume they will give him some leeway since Mariotta is in his rookie year, but who knows.

Bradley - 9-30 coaching record so far. For a defensive coach, the Defense hasn't done much yet. I will be curious as to how much time they give him.

O'Brien - After 9-7 last year, I thought they had their coach for the foreseeable future. This year has been such a disaster though, I don't think anyone is necessarily safe. Bob McNair is getting old enough where I don't think he will be as loyal as he used to be. I think he will demand results or you will be gone. The Texans are failing in all areas of play. Not a good look for a coach.

Still strongly in the playoff hunt.

Man do I hate the NFL playoff structure.
even Schaub "led" this team to the playoffs…the weak division is fools gold for Bob McNair. He's happy with sentimental trophies.
the 'good' schuab teams were legit playoff teams, and he represented the best overall Qbing we have seen. yeah, niether was superbowl caliber, but currently i miss fools gold over just fooling around.

True. If only those teams had a decent QB…makes me long for those days when AJ80 had to slow down to a snails pace and come back 10 yards to make the catch

Derek Carr destroyed the Jets; another blunder for Rick Smith
Both Carr and Bridgewater didn't fit the system bruhget with the program
Or Bortles. It really seems like Clowney was a terrible pick.
I do find it comical that homers are still buying the company line that he's progressing, blah blahhe's a lemon Ferrari that's always in the shop.
He's not played a lot. When he has, he's looked pretty freaking good.

Agreed. Bengals fans will rightfully be unhappy their team didn't play up to their ability. But the Texans didn't play down at the low level they had been either. Offense may not have done a lot, but defense was making tackle, not giving big running lanes, etc. Looked much better. Though still a few too many open guys in the secondary, the corners had a number of nice break ups.

Remember Jason Babin? 3 years in Houston, 4, 4, and 5 sacks in those years. Three more seasons with other teams part time or missing time and not much production. Then bam, 12.5, 18 and 7 sack seasons the next 3 years.

Sometimes it just takes awhile. I did think Mercilus was playing well the end of last season, though if so, looking back at his stats it doesn't show in them. He had a couple of 2-sack games middle of the year.

How weird. Guy has a bad 3 years, Texans give him a contract he hasn't earned, and then he outplays that contract. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.
I don't think he was living up to his contract until Clowney went down and Mercilus took his position. So basically the Texans were playing him out of position. I say they need to try and find a fit for Clowney somewhere else on the defense, when (if) he gets healthy again.

How good is this D now? They are not giving up any points of late. Crazy what a quick turnaround it's been. They are dangling on my ww but the only time I got to see them was last night so I'm not sold. And Clowney comes back when?

Great Turnaround by this team. They have played 4 really solid games in a row. The defense really looks like they get it. Either Crennel simplified his system or they have just finally gotten what he is trying to do. They really need to win one of the next two, and then beat the Colts if they want to win the division. They should handle the Titans and Jags in their last two games.

Before all of New England's injuries, I would have said beating them was next to impossible, but with the way the defense is playing with the game in Houston, that turns into a winnable game.

I think O'Brien is getting as much out of the offense as he can with the personnel limitations. I have to say I was very critical of him earlier in the season, but he has gotten things turned around quickly. He deserves credit for that.

The defense is very good. Watt is practically unblockable one on one. He has 9.5 sacks in his last 5 games. I think Clowney will start to get some too as he has been very close. It will be interesting to see how they handle a running QB in their next game.

What's the status of the Texans cornerbacks?

Trying to decide if it makes sense to start Watkins this week.
Last 3 games opposing team top receiver:

Green: 5-67

Marshall: 5-47-1

Cooks: 5-35

The Texans Secondary is playing very well. Joseph is having a good year, Jackson looked good in his return from injury last week, and the rookie Kevin Johnson could be a shutdown corner in a year or two. I think he should be in consideration for defensive ROY. All that to say, I have a hard time seeing Watkins going off for a huge game this week.

In addition, with JJ Watt, opposing QB's are not getting a whole lot of time to wait for the deep pass route to develop. This also could hurt Watkins performance this week. Taylor may not get sacked, but he will probably be forced to run sooner than he would like.

Another season of fool's gold. Pathetic offensive performance tonight, as usual we got back into the playoff hunt just enough to screw up our chances of getting a franchise QB. Derek Newton fooled us for awhile making us think he had become a competent OT but tonight he nearly single handedly made sure we had no chance to win. It sucks being from this city and having to watch this garbage football team year after year.

Big win in Indy. A loss by the Colts and a Texans win next week would win the division it looks like, otherwise it will come down to the final week.

As far as tiebreakers, it looks like any ties could go far down the list. If I'm figuring things right. A tie with either/both of Indy or Jacksonville and we'd have the same head to head and division records.

Next tiebreak, common games, would also be a tie as all 3 teams are 1-1 in not-common games.

Conference record we would lose to Jackonsville with a 5-7 record to their 6-6. With Indy it would be a tie and it would go down to best Strength of Victory.

If I'm figuring it right.

If Texans win just one of their last two, Jax is eliminated. Indy would have to win both, and the tiebreaker goes down to Strength of Victory.

Texans hold the edge currently as their unique wins came against Bengals (11-3), Jets (9-5), and New Orleans (5-8)

Colts unique victories would be over Broncos (10-4), Atlanta (7-7), and Miami (5-9)

Texans could gain in strength of victory if they beat Jax and lose to Tennessee. That would give them a unique victory over jax and indy a unique victory over titans.

the big games in strength of victory are next week, Bengals at Broncos, and the final week Atlanta vs. New Orleans.

It is likely that if the Texans win next week and Cincinnati beats Denver that the Texans will clinch a playoff spot before the final week.

Can clinch the division with the following this week:

1) Houston win + Indy loss or tie

2) Houston tie + Indy loss

3) Houston win + Bengals beating Denver

Copied from a message board...all but clinched since ALL of the below have to go wrong (I know that can and does line)

TODAY - DEN vs CIN

WEEK 17
BUF vs NYJ
MIA vs NE
ATL vs NO
BAL vs CIN
PIT vs CLE
JAX vs HOU
IND vs TEN
OAK vs KC
DEN vs SD

HOUSTON TEXANS (vs. Jacksonville)

Houston clinches AFC South division with:

  1. HOU win or tie OR
  2. IND loss or tie OR
  3. HOU clinches strength of victory tiebreaker over IND or clinches strength of schedule tiebreaker over IND
Note: HOU clinches strength of victory tiebreaker over IND if one of the following teams wins or ties: CIN, NE, NO, NYJ, SD. HOU clinches strength of schedule tiebreaker over IND if KC wins or ties and BAL wins or ties as long as both teams don't tie

Alright, so prediction time. I'm going intentionally conservative here.

Call these games losses, 0-3: (actual 1-2)

Patriots

Indy x2

Call these 5 games toss ups, and saying 3-3 in them. (actual 2-4)

Chiefs

Dolphins

Bengals

Saints

Panthers

Bills

Call these favoring the Texans, give them 5-2 in them. (actual: 6-1)

Jax x2

Tennessee x2

Jets

Bucs

Falcons

So I guess I'm predicting conservatively at 8-8 . But 9 or 10 wins are very realistic too. So are fewer though.
Close.

I feel this team is 6-10 waiting to happen...i am more than willing to be wrong on that.
i will own this negative prediction..go texans

Vegas has Houston as a 3 point underdog.

I think it should be a good match up. Very similar teams, but they get the edge at QB.

ETA: Also longest odds to win the Super Bowl. 60-1.
