2015 New York Giants - WK10 Cruz announces season ending calf surgery (1 Viewer)

Beason seems open to working with the Giants about his contract. That'd be great because then WLB might be the only hole to fill.

Giants sign CFL's top offensive lineman

http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2015/02/cfls_top_offensive_lineman_brett_jones_to_sign_wit.html

Article says he is a center who probably cannot play other positions
Maybe he's just for depth or if he shows he can start, maybe Richburg will stay at guard.

Says Jones played Guard in college. May just end up being depth but would be great if he was able to man that hole in guard.
He signed a 3 year deal with no guarantees

Rototworld:

NJ.com's Jordan Raanan was told "to keep an eye out for" Giants WR Marcus Harris in 2015.
The Giants were considering Harris for a starting role before a shoulder injury ended his season prior to Week 1. That was also before Odell Beckham Jr. blew up and became one of the NFL's best receivers. If Victor Cruz (torn patellar tendon) returns to his old form, New York is going to have a very deep receiving corps.

Rank these prospects in the order you'd like to see the Giants draft

Leonard Williams (not Gonna Happen)

Brandon Sherff

Danny Shelton

Landon Collins

Trae Waynes

So far I see the Giants have signed:

Shane Vereen RB Patriots

Jonathan Casillas LB Patriots

Dwayne Harris WR/Return guy Dallas

Marshall Newhouse OT Bengals

What a bunch of garbage! Why are they wasting this kind of money on a bunch of backups and special teamers ?

Vereen is the only one worth anything

Vereen good because of Jennings injury history.

Harris I like because the team needs a KR.

Casillias is a cover LB so he's a replacement for Williams.

Would like to see them get a starting safety and guard.

  • A BigBlueInteractive.com source reports that the Giants are involved in trade talks with the New Orleans Saints about defensive end Cameron Jordan.

  • A BigBlueInteractive.com source reports that the Giants are close to a contract extension for cornerback Prince Amukamara, who has one year left on his current contract.

  • Unrestricted free agent safety Antrel Rolle is visiting the Chicago Bears.

  • The NFL Network is reporting that the Giants are out of the running for unrestricted free agent defensive tackle Dan Williams (Arizona Cardinals).

  • The New York Daily News is reporting that the Giants “are definitely in play” for unrestricted free agent safety Ron Parker (Kansas City Chiefs).

  • NJ.com is reporting that the Giants expressed interest in unrestricted free agent safety Da’Norris Searcy (Buffalo Bills). However, Searcy is signing with the Tennessee Titans.

  • ESPN is reporting that the Giants were interested in unrestricted free agent cornerback Buster Skrine (Cleveland Browns), but Skrine was looking for more money than the Giants are willing to pay. Skrine has since signed with the New York Jets.

  • According to a beat writer for the Falcons, unrestricted free agent linebacker Brooks Reed, who the Giants were reportedly interested in, will sign with the Atlanta Falcons.

  • NJ.com is reporting that the Giants only offered unrestricted defensive end Brandon Graham (Philadelphia Eagles) a 1-year contract. Graham re-signed a 4-year, $26 million contract with the Eagles.

Vereen was one guy I wished for, thought he'd be a great fit. Had no idea they were even interested in him.

If Cruz can come back 100% I think this offense could be lethal.

I agree with this

I was hoping to get the guard from Cincy

I am not familiar with most of the guys signed today but they look like depth signings

The trade rumor for Cameron Jordan seems interesting

Thomas looks to be a fast cover LB too. Should help improve ST and both LBs signed today can cover TEs

I like the Vereen signing too, but the only signing I really didn't care for was Harris. I understand that they don't want Beckham to return PRs, but I think the price they paid was excessive.

Victor Cruz Begins Running: New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz posted a photo on his Instagram account yesterday showing him running inside the team’s indoor practice facility at Quest Diagnostics Training Center.

This is the first public evidence that Cruz is running again since tearing the patella tendon in his right knee on October 12 against the Philadelphia Eagles and subsequent surgery. Team officials such as General Manager Jerry Reese and Head Coach Tom Coughlin have said a number of times this offseason while they remain optimistic that Cruz will return to full strength, there are no guarantees.

“When a guy has a big injury like Victor had, you can’t put all your eggs in his basket,” said Reese on February 21. “Our doctors said he looks good. I see him down in the training room working out with our trainers and doctors and he looks good. Until you get out there – his game is quickness. Until you get out there and move around, you never know how he is going to recover from that. We are hoping and praying that he comes back 100 percent and be the Victor Cruz that we know, but you can’t put 100 percent in that basket.”

“I think (Cruz) will be back to the player that he was and hopefully better,” said Coughin on March 25. “Victor looks really good, he’s starting to run, I was in the field house watching him rehab, he’s coming along well… I don’t know (when he will be able to fully practice). I shouldn’t say this, because medically I really do not have a definite answer, but by training camp, hopefully. He will work his way through.”

So who do you guys think the Giants will take at 9?

My guess is Dupree from Kentucky (assuming that Cooper and White are gone)

He has the size that the Giants typically look for at DE

If White is there they should be ALL OVER him, otherwise shore up the O-line with the best available(on their board) guard or tackle

They never take who you would expect or want them them to take ... Any receiver other then Cooper would be a huge mistake.

I think they will reach for a DT or DE that hasn't been talked about as a top 15-20 pick and who will not contribute much.

Don't mean to be negative but I hate the way they draft since Reese took over.

Yeah drafting Beckham and Pugh, what a awful GM.

Look, I'm not a fan of Resse's drafts for the simple reason that he can't draft past the 2nd round. Seems every year they might as well just throw away their 3-7th round picks because they're wasted, typically on big project type players that can't have any real impact on day one. As far as his 1st and 2nd round choices, he's pretty lights out.

2014 - Beckham (Top 3 WR after year 1) & Richburg (Our starting center this year)

2013 - Pugh (Starting RT last two seasons) & Hankins (One of the best young DTs in the league right now)

2012 - Wilson & Randle - This was his worst season, Wilson busted and never really got a chance and Randle just can't learn a playbook.

2011 - Prince & Marvin Austin - Prince is a high level CB and Austin is no longer with the team, not a real hit though

2010 - JPP & Linval Joseph - We all know about JPP & Joseph got a huge contract from MIN last year.

My point is, he has had 3 of these picks miss in the last 5 years most of them were solid. I'm still of the opinion Wilson had the talent, he needed the coaching staff to give him more confidence and then as we know the injury. But Reese will draft more than likely 2 solid instant starters on the team in the first two rounds. The reason people can't stand the way Reese drafts is because he doesn't look at needs at all, just BPA. It's also what makes them damn near impossible to predict. You figure... we're drafting a #9. Lets assume Winston and Mariota come off the board before 9, which I think is likely simply because a lot of teams are kicking themselves for passing on Teddy last year, so they'll overdraft Mariota this year. That essentially puts us a pick 7, so presume the Top 7 on our board looks something like this:

1. Leonard Williams

2. Amari Cooper

3. Vic Beasley

4. Dante Fowler

5. Kevin White

6. Alvin Dupree

As for 7 it could be any number of guys really: Danny Shelton, Trae Waynes, Brandon Scherff, TJ Clemmings, Malcom Brown, Landon Collins, could still be Randy Gregory too.

My gut still tells me they'll end up taking Gregory, it just seems like a very "Reese" pick. Reese is the type of guy to look at Gregory and say "We have the coaching and team leadership to keep him out of substance abuse trouble. He showed up light to the combine due to being sick and still put up amazing numbers in every test." The Giants also strike me as the type of evaluation team to pickup on the fact that most of Gregory's "knocks" in the media are mainly bs. People say he gets slow off the line but a lot of that has to do with the way he was used at Nebraska as more of a run stopper than a all out rusher. He's one of those guys who isn't a Top 3 talent at any one thing but is a Top 10 talent at everything. With the way Spags and the Giants run the defense, this is the type of guy they want... someone who could be lined up all over the field. He can be a down DE who can run stop, rush or drop into coverage, he could be a stand up DE, could swap to OLB etc. he can do everything. The Giants friggin love themselves all around guys who can move. Where as a lot of these other pass rushers like Dupree, Beasley & Fowler are just rush OLB/DEs. That's really all they do.

My draft pick prediction is, Amari Cooper if he is available and otherwise Randy Gregory.

People will freak out and get upset because the 'media' has Gregory slipping. But lets not forget similar to someone like Bridgewater last year, Gregory was originally thought to be the top defensive talent in this draft back in December.

ODB ended up being a pick I was against at the time, but it ended up being an amazing pick. He actually helped salvage the season for the Giants.

I don't know if it is wise though to take another WR early this year. Manning with what he had last year threw for 4400 yards with 30 td's to 14 ints. This was all in his first year in a new system. As much as adding another young play making skill guy looks good on paper I don't think it is a necessity. They can add some depth to the WR's mid draft.

If the Giants go O early, I would hope it would be some where on the O line.

See, I personally would be upset if they got OL at the #9 pick, the gap between the "top talent" and the 2-3rd round graded talent at the OL positions this year isn't all that much. When you look at projected rounds for these guys almost all of them are projected 1st - 2nd round or 1st - 3rd round because there's almost no gap in them. Having an early 2nd round pick I feel like we'll still be likely to land someone like DJ Humphries, TJ Clemmings or Cedric Ogbuehi. I doubt Flowers or Peat slips out of the first round. But there will be a run on tackles in the early-mid 2nd round and I think that's the best time to strike. I'd much rather get a possible difference making DE in the first round or a guy like Amari Cooper, regardless of the need then swing around and snag one of those guys in the 2nd.

IMO taking another first round WR is putting too many eggs in one basket. You had amazing success last year drafting ODB early, which should give the luxury to not have to address receiver so early this season. The GMen seriously need to find dominant players at other positions to have a winning team. Further the odds of getting that kind of production from another first year WR is low, and the clock is ticking on the Eli era. You also have other talent at the position; even though there are questions about the recovery of Cruz, he was recently a stellar performer, and you have a lot of salary cap locked up in him. Adding that to the cap paid to two first round WRs is too much and compromises your ability to pay at other positions. Randle also ended the year well, after his benching; perhaps the light finally went on. Finally there were two other young WRs that looked promising in camp last year in Washington and Harris. Better to give yourself a chance for all of that to work out, and instead bolster the lines which look to pay much higher immediate dividends. I'd much prefer a guy like Scherff who could turn your OLine into a dominant unit.

Scherff is a waste pick in my opinion, we need a RT more than a RG. And Scherff projects more as a guard. The problem right now is that Pugh is playing at an average level as he's a very similar player to Scherff in that he's a middling tackle but could be an above average or even great guard. We need a true RT if we're drafting O-Line and the issue is that there aren't any true RT's in this draft that warrant the #9 overall pick. So our options are either:

A) Draft one of the elite DE prospects if available, I firmly believe that this is how the Giants board begins. DE is a big need with the way Spags like's to run his offense with the revolving door of DEs. Remember back in 2007, you'd see all sorts of formations. You'd see 4 DEs on the line at once, 1 DE with his hand in the dirt, 2 DTs and 1 DE standing up, 3 DEs and 1 DT with 1 DE dropping into coverage. And most of all they were constantly rotating off the field. Right now we only have Pierre-Paul, Moore & Ayers really. While on paper DE wouldn't seem like a big need for most teams with those players, on this team it is because of the way the substitutions and packages on the D-Line work. The Giants can go more or less into every season with DE listed as a huge need.

B) Draft Amari Cooper or Kevin White if available, I think if there are no DEs left they'll look to one of these guys. Yes, you can claim that Cruz was recently very good and be correct. But he just started running and it's not often guys come back the same way from that injury. Cruz relies heavily on his patellar tendon for his style of play. If it doesn't heal back to full strength, even losing half a step is enough to make a guy like him go from great to mediocre. And even if he is healthy, having Beckham and Cooper on the outsides with Cruz in the slot is something nobody would complain about except their fantasy owners. In terms of real football, they'd be the most feared passing offense in the game with the addition of Cooper.

C) Trade back, something the Giants aren't known for but if a top DE or Cooper/White aren't available it makes sense to trade back and acquire and extra pick or two. Lord knows we could use some help in other places. If they can trade back to the late teens or early 20s they can obtain one of the top OL in the draft and gain an extra pick.

Either way, drafting Scherff seems stupid to me and drafting Flowers or Peat that early seems like a stretch at best as most of what I've read is that the general consensus is they're in that 20-32 pick range type of guys.

I understand trying to get the best value for your pick and trust me I would love to see the Giants trade down and grab an extra pick or two as well but if they can’t make a trade and they like Flowers or Peat or whomever and think that player will be better in the long run then I have no problem with them taking the player 10 spots higher than maybe he “should” go. It’s not like either of those guys is going to be around when the Giants pick in the 2nd round

Sure, obviously. What I'm saying though is I just don't see them taking one there. One of Cooper, White, Dupree, Williams, Ray, Fowler, Shelton and possibly Gregory if they still like him as I theorize will be there for them though. And I think they will have all of those guys higher on their draft boards than any of the O-Lineman. That 8 names with only 7 picks before them (assuming that Winston and Mariota go before 9 that is). Plus, I wouldn't be shocked to see Trae Waynes go to one of those guys either. There's even a chance that Cooper, White and Parker all go off the board early. There are a lot of receiver needy teams in the Top 8. I could see a situation where the draft shakes out like this:

1. Tampa - Winston - No brainer

2. Tenn - Either trade to someone for Mariota or pick him themselves (I personally have a feeling the Jets or the Redskins try to move up a few picks here).

3. Jags - Leonard Williams - No brainer

4. Raiders - Kevin White - A lot of people have the Raiders taking another rusher to pair with Mack. But I just feel like the front office knows they need to get Carr some talent to give him a real chance to succeed.

5. Redskins - Amari Cooper - If the Skins are sticking with RG3, they need to give him all the help that he can get on that offense. Cooper could be the true #1 he's been missing.

6. Jets - Dante Fowler - If the Jets don't trade up for Mariota (or he falls) I figure they're taking either a rusher or a WR. If Cooper and White are gone at this junction I imagine they won't over draft Parker here.

7. Bears - DeVante Parker - Bears need a WR above pretty much all else. Cutler isn't that great with 2 great WRs. He's awful with only 1.

8. Falcons - Vic Beasley - Falcons are probably the most clear pick outside the Top 3. They're obviously going edge rusher here and taking the best of what's left on their board.

Leaving the Giants with the option of Bud Dupree, Shane Ray and Danny Shelton.

Richburg was awful last season - Let's not get ahead of ourselves ...he hasn't done anything yet

Prince - Same as Pugh ... he is ok but shouldn't have been picked as high as he was.

Hankins they had to pick because they let Joseph walk ...It's a wash not a great move

Monk, you are far and away the most negative Giants fan I've ever met... and that's saying something.

Pugh didn't really regress, he didn't improve. That said, either way my point stands his natural position is Guard. There is a big gap in the style of play in Guard vs Tackle. I think he could be a Pro bowl level guard he wasn't meant to play tackle though, he just doesn't have a choice right now.

Richburg same thing, he is a true center, he was thrust into the role of Guard by Schwarz getting hurt and it being the only option. Same as with Guard vs Tackle, Guard vs Center is a big difference. Neither of these guys has truly played their position that they're trained in playing properly.

Prince I have no idea what you're talking about, we took him at 19th overall. He was unanimously thought of as a Top 15 draft pick in 2011. He was a steal at 19. He was widely considered one of the top players in the draft that year.

Proof: http://walterfootball.com/draft2011CB.php http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft/rankings/_/year/2011 http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/TSX/2011

Wilson was also expected to go when he did... he was 33rd on Mayock's board (http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/09000d5d8288a470/article/mike-mayocks-top-100-nfl-draft-prospect-rankings),

JPP was a consensus Top 20 pick, he went at 15... not really a stretch. http://walterfootball.com/draft2010DE.php

And Beckham... what are you talking about? http://walterfootball.com/draft2014bigboard.phpRanked 14th, Mayock had him at 17th http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000346744/article/2014-nfl-draft-mike-mayocks-top-100-prospects

And in the end... what the #### does it matter where they were "supposed" to go? Idk about you but some of the guys ranked above Beckham, Jake Matthews, Eric Ebron, Johnny Manziel, Kyle Fuller, Blake BOrtles, Clinton- Dix? I'd rather have had Beckham then and now.

So who do you guys think the Giants will take at 9?

My guess is Dupree from Kentucky (assuming that Cooper and White are gone)

He has the size that the Giants typically look for at DE

Pugh is only OK for a 1st round pick and he regressed this year ... he is the type of guy you can find in the mid rounds not a 1st round talent

Richburg was awful last season - Let's not get ahead of ourselves ...he hasn't done anything yet

Prince - Same as Pugh ... he is ok but shouldn't have been picked as high as he was.

Hankins they had to pick because they let Joseph walk ...It's a wash not a great move

So in 5 drafts you mentioned ...they came away with 2 picks worthy of a 1st round pick JPP after the 2nd round they may as well not even pick.

I will add that Hankins was drafted while Linval Joesph was on the team. 2013 was Hankins’ rookie season AND Linval’s last season with the Giants. Seems like the Giants knew they weren’t going to pay Linval when he hit free agency so they drafted his successor a season before he left.

This is true... it's also what A LOT of the best teams do. Don't overpay for above average talent when you don't have to. They made the decision most teams aren't willing to make. Prime example is stuff like the Dolphins signing Suh to the deal they did, handicaps them forever. They're going to have to sign Tannehill soon or let him walk and they're not going to have the money to do it. Or like the Vikes with Peterson's deal, who the hell gives a RB a deal like that? Draft another one, no he won't be AD but still... you just don't do that type of stuff.

I'm not so sure the Giants would touch Gregory. Last year they made a point of selecting guys that were captains on their college teams and have no off the field issues. I think they are happy with last years draft and will continue the trend.
