2015 New York Giants - WK10 Cruz announces season ending calf surgery (1 Viewer)

Thanks for post Net

It’s going to be really interesting to see what the Giants do at the WR position. They do seem to be very deep there. Davis was thought just to be a special teams guy but if he is running clean routes and catching everything Corey Washington might be in trouble.

How many WR can they keep?

BBI's take:

There are four players who have locks on wide receiver roster spots. Those are Odell Beckham Jr., Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle and Dwayne Harris. The Giants will most likely keep six wide receivers -- which leaves Preston Parker, James Jones, Corey Washington and Geremy Davis fighting for two roster spots.

How the Giants sort out who gets those two spots in anybody's guess. You can make a solid case for each player.

Parker was a solid player for the Giants a year ago and offers them insurance as both a receiver and a return man. Wide receivers coach Sean Ryan on Monday praised Parker's toughness and his play-making ability.

Jones has quickly shown why he has 383 career receptions. He is a superb route runner, and a savvy, knowledgeable pro.

Washington is the 6-foot-4 fan favorite who has potential as a red zone threat. Ryan praised his progress and said he had an excellent spring.

Davis catches everything thrown in his direction, has shown better route-running ability than he was supposed to possess and could be a key special teams contributor on coverage teams.

Four players. Two spots. No clue who gets them.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It'll be difficult for them to keep more than 6 since they need to keep enough depth at LB with Beason's injury history and it seems like along the Dline they are going to have to make some tough choices there as well. Giants are going to have to cut some promising players at Dline and WR while some pretty bad ones are kept to backup the Oline, and CB spots.

RT seems to be really hurting. As it sits now, Flowers won't get much help by moving a TE to his side, because Newhouse and Mosley have been so lousy. Might see Schwartz moved to RT and Jerry as starting RG.

Chances of getting help are slim because Mathis seems to be pricing himself out of what most teams can pay. Long, his health was bad before all the knee problems. If they sign Long it seems more like "he can't be any worse" than what they have at RT thinking. And by the time roster cuts come, I think the Giants want to have set what front 5 they're going with rather than add someone else so late into preseason.

EARLY #Giants camp observations: Cruz moving MUCH better than expected, Vereen playing huge role, OBJ still focal point, best Eli has looked

Flowers and Richburg are sitting out of today's practice. The first one in full pads. Flowers claims he's day-to-day and that the hip is feeling better.

@art_stapleton

Prince Amukamara not wearing a wrap around thigh/groin area as you'd expect if injury was serious. Likely a tweak, so NYG held him.

@art_stapleton 35s36 seconds ago

Giants quarterbacks have not had any semblance of a clean pocket in team drills today. Ze-ro.

@art_stapleton

From what we saw today, if Richburg and Flowers never get back in lineup for Giants, the OL is in trouble. No reason to panic about that yet
@AdamSchein

BREAKING: Phil Simms is now on Twitter. The game has changed forever. @PhilSimmsQB

@PhilSimmsQB

Yes I am on Twitter...Better late than never...Might take me awhile to get used to this. If @7boomeresiason can do it, so can I.

Landon Collins injured and Mikkele Thompson carted off with an Achilles injury. That was supposed to be the starting safeties.

This is the least optimistic I think I have ever been going into a season.

Having a hard time finding anything positive and the negatives just keep piling up.

Landon Collins and Mikkele Thompson injured and one of their weakest positions is devastating

The Loss of JPP at another thin position.

Flowers looked over matched in the few plays that I saw him

Giants offense was absolutely pathetic last night

Does anyone have anything positive to say about this team?

There's another month of preseason, first game means nothing, last year they went unbeaten in games that didn't count, chill out. They'll get a lot of what's wrong fixed before opening week. Then they'll join every other team with "issues" somewhere.

I finally watched the 1st half today

The only positive I came away with was that the return units looked better than they have in the past

I thought Flowers looked ok for a rookie LT didn't seem over matched to me

The right side of the line is going to be a big issue ...I think we may see Jake Long signing real soon

The Bengals are a really good team and it was the 1st preseason games and there are 3 weeks to improve

From Rotoworld:

Giants signed S Brandon Meriweather.

When teams get truly desperate at safety, they sign Brandon Meriweather. He's been one of the worst safeties in the league for seemingly the past half-decade. The Giants are in dire straits in the back half, where FS Mykkele Thompson is out for the season and SS Landon Collins has a sprained MCL.

From Rotoworld:

In a radio interview, Giants owner John Mara said he was "beyond the point where I'm annoyed" with Jason Pierre-Paul.

"I wish he’d handled it better, but we’re beyond that," Mara said. "Do I wish he came here and had our doctors look at him? Yes." Six weeks after the fireworks accident which cost JPP at least one finger, the Giants' doctors have still not been given permission to assess the severity of the damage. At this point, the Giants should view any contributions they get from Pierre-Paul this season as a bonus.

I don't like the Meriweather signing. This is one reason why. From Rotoworld:

New Giants S Brandon Meriweather has no plans to change his playing style.

"I think every player you ever ask will say you play your game the way you play your game," Meriweather said Monday. "I’m going to play my game the way I play my game, but I’m also going to respect the rules." Coach Tom Coughlin said on Monday he thought Meriweather would be open to coaching, but it is difficult to teach a 31-year-old safety new tricks. Meriweather has been fined or suspended six times in his career for illegal hits.

What went on Monday night on the right side of the Giants offensive line was nothing short of amazing, even laughable if you want to use that term. It certainly, however, wasn't funny. As we reported, five different players -- Marshall Newhouse, Geoff Schwartz, John Jerry, Brandon Mosley and Bobby Hart -- rotated through the right tackle spot with the first two units. Out of that group, only Newhouse did not also see some time at right guard. Scary thought, by the way, is that the 20-year-old Hart, the seventh-round pick, was the one who stood out Monday. On one play he drove defensive end Brad Bars backwards three or four yards.

I hope the NYG keep 4 RBs and Darkwa gets a real chance to earn playing time in the regular season. He has been the best RB on the team this preseason IMO.

Just watched the 1st half of the game ... It's going to be a long season!

Offensively the Giants were putrid again ...

O'line looks bad but there were some positives ... lots of pressure but only 1 sack allowed ... Positives: Shwartz looked good at Guard, Flowers looked good in pass and run, and I didn't hear Richburgs name mentioned which is a positive. But Pugh got blown out on at least one play, Shwartz was horrible when move to RT (I dont think you will be seeing him there at all)

Eli stunk, he has to be the worst qb in the NFL short dump off passes. He had 3 pass attempts knocked down in a row on one series.

Defensively they were worse then advertised ... Jacksonville scored on their first 3 possessions (all FGs) and it could have been worse if Jax WRs didn't drop a few passes. Jacksonville had their way with them moving the ball on the ground and through the air. D line no pressure on Bortles and Jags pounded the ball up the middle on the first few drives. Bortles tortured the Giant safties. Bennett Jackson was so bad it was embarrassing ... If he is a starter we are in very big trouble.

JT Thomas was an absolute beast ... If he continues to play like this the Giants got a huge steal in free agency. Beason looked good (as expected) but sprained his knee ... As long as he is ready for the season the Giants look like they will have their best starting 3 LBs in a long time with Kennard, Beason, Thomas ... but very little depth outside of McClain

So Giant O-line going to hold back Eli to ObJ?
no
I agree. The running game will probably be lucky to break into the top 30. Passing game I expect will be fine.

With all the injuries at C, RG and question mark as to who will play RT has made it so having a rookie LT and Pugh moved to LG less of a concern. They are the strength of the line.

Disagree with this ... barring any other significant injuries to the Oline.

I think RB will be the strength of this line

Flowers and Schwartz looked like run blocking maulers last week. If Pugh (1st Round) and Richburg (2nd) hold up their end of the bargain (they only need to be adequate run blockers) the only ? should be RT. If they do not hold up their end of the bargain ... Reese should be fired immediately.

I'm just not convinced Schwartz can stay healthy this season.

Where are all the Giant fans on this board? Did anyone watch the game? Does anybody have any insight , observations , opinions?

I was at the game so it's a bit harder to see individual performances on the O and D lines but based on the results themselves ...

The Giants O'line doesn't look too bad to me. They were missing Richburg and Shwartz didn't start (which is starting to concern me), but only allowed 2 sacks to one of the best Dlines in the NFL.

One of the sacks came with less then a minute left in the 1st half, when Giants were in 2 minute and the Jets knew they were passing.

The Giants D'line is a disaster ... Ayer's went down with an ankle or Achilles injury in warm-ups (not sure how bad this is yet). The DEs are now Kerry Wynn (not too good) and Owa Odi (rookie) who has looked good.

I thinks it's officially fair to call Damontre Moore a bust since he can't crack this starting lineup in year 3.

Did J.T. Thomas even play ???

Odell had a very good game against Revis ...almost a great game.

The defense looks horrible. It’s going to take a lot for them to get to be mediocre.

The starting CB’s are fine and are the only part of the defense that I feel comfortable with

I haven’t heard much about Hankins this offseason. Is he hurt?

Hosley is horrible at CB by the way

The offensive line looked ok against the Jets

I’m concerned about the running game and Cruz’ calf injury

The offense is going to have to carry this team especially early

They open with Dallas and Atlanta two high powered offenses I don’t think our defense has a shot against either offense good thing is neither one of those defenses are that good.

Bet the over in both games.

Giants cut Steve Weatherford.. the dude has an incredible leg and is built like a real football player but he has no real touch

Steve Weatherford, the Giants' punter for the last four seasons, has been cut, according to a source.

The move happened Friday, and it was not a complete surprise. Coach Tom Coughlin had hinted that Weatherford was on the hot seat over the last two weeks, first suggesting that the veteran punter was in competition with training camp punter Robert Malone, and then, when Malone was cut on Tuesday, stating that a free agent punter could also come steal Weatherford's job.

Weatherford's replacement will be Brad Wing, the Pittsburgh Steelers punter and a former Australian Rules Football Player. According to a source, the Giants are sending a late-round draft pick to Pittsburgh for the special teams player.

Weatherford, 32, struggled through an injury-plagued season last year, slowed by back and ankle woes, and he understood that he had to prove something inThursday's preseason finale in New England. He boomed a 57-yard punt in the game and called it "one of the best punts I've ever hit in my career," but didn't seem as thrilled with some of his other attempts.

Weatherford had been set to count $3.075 million against the cap next season

... ALWAYS a Giant.

Guy was a great teammate from what I hear (and from a punter) and really resonated with the community. Wouldn't be surprised to see him work for the organization when his playing days are done.

JPP wants to get paid now for the games he'll miss. That's crap. If they do that, he should give them that amount as a discount on his new contract since he's basically ruined his season for the team this year.

The loss sucks. Dallas looked sharper, but still needed the refs help to come up with the win.

Giants didn't have a pass rush. I think that will get better after a few games and the players learn and trust the system. It was the case the last time Spags was DC, that it took a few games for the defense to actually get pressure. Cowboys did a good job of figuring out where the blitzes would be coming from even though the Giants tried to hide them.

The secondary and Oline were actually the strengths. If only they can stay healthy. Giants actually had a semblance of a running game.

Team misses Beason. If he gets hurt when he comes back, the team needs to move on from him.

From Rotoworld:

Jason Pierre-Paul - DL - Giants
ESPN's Dan Graziano reports Jason Pierre-Paul had a "repair procedure" performed on his right middle finger only three days before the Giants examined him last week.

We now know that Pierre-Paul damaged at least three fingers on his right hand in his July 4 fireworks accident. JPP lost his "entire" index finger, and a portion of his thumb. The extent of the damage to his middle finger is unclear. Per Graziano, there's "increased pessimism" about his 2015 status. The sides aren't expected to meet again for another "five or six weeks." It's quite possible JPP misses the entire season.

JASON PIERRE-PAUL ALSO MISSING PART OF THUMB…
According to ESPN, the injuries that New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul suffered to his right hand from a July 4th fireworks accident are worse than originally reported.

In addition to the right index finger amputated at the knuckle, fractured right thumb, and skin grafts, Pierre-Paul is also missing the tip of his right thumb. He also had surgery on his right middle finger three days before meeting with team officials last week. ESPN says the fractured thumb was surgically repaired on July 8th and that Pierre-Paul has undergone a “myriad surgical procedures” on his hand since the accident.

This report appears to substantiate the FOX Sports report last week that Pierre Paul had damage to three of the fingers on his right hand. FOX Sports also said Pierre-Paul had another skin graft procedure performed recently, and because Pierre-Paul has not been able to lift weights, he has lost significant muscle mass.

Pierre-Paul believes he will return to the playing field this season but there appears to be growing skepticism by team officials that he will be able to do so. The Giants have yet to rescind their 1-year, $14.813 million Franchise tender, but Pierre-Paul is not currently being paid and is losing approximately $870,000 per week now that the season has started.

Both FOX Sports and ESPN report that the Giants have told Pierre-Paul that they will re-evaluate his physical condition in five-six weeks. ESPN says that if his hand is not “healed to their satisfaction,” the Giants will consider rescinding the Franchise tender.

I guess if he signed the Franchise tender, he would still have to pass a physical. So it's not like the Giants are risking being on the hook by leaving the tender out there.

Anyone knows what happens to the Franchise tag payment if JPP misses the whole season due to a "non-football related injury?" If the Giants elect to re-Franchise him for next season, would he receive the Franchise tag multiplier or, just the regular Franchise tag (losing out on the multiplier)?

Any word on Cruz? Still crippled and not even running. About to be droppable in most redrafts.

Oops. Title made me think this was a Cruz thread. Apologies, but still a valid question for Giants fans.

I would think without the multiplier since he never played under a franchise tag contract. Just a guess though.
