The Giants were in a playoffs position as of August 1. They needed to rent Byrd and Leake to make their run but things didn't work out to plan. Byrd certainly held up his end of the bargain with some key hits down the stretch. If Keury Mella turns into Juan Marichal someday, it'll look bad but the Giants have generally done a good job of assessing their prospects.
