2016-17 NBA Thread: Finals are over, please go away (3 Viewers)

Triple double from Julius Randle last night, 17-14-10.  This follows his previous game where he tallied 8-11-8.

He's starting to get it. Work ethic is supposedly upper echelon. Very exciting for us Laker fans.

New thread title misses the point.  Wizards fans are depressed that there are [(years remaining in their lifetimes) x 82] Wizards games remaining.

Milestone in hoops history.  20 years ago today the Monstars blew a 66-18 halftime lead to the Tune Squad.  Tunes made some halftime adjustments and got Michael Jordan going, rallied to win 78-77.

Almost as epic a meltdown as the Warriors blowing a 3-1 lead in the Finals back in June.

How the game has changed over the years.

Biggest takeaway: late 90's, early 00's sucked.
The Assist% is the only one that really surprised me.  I expected a much larger upswing over the last five years, putting the number above all previous rates, given the recent trend away from ISOs and in favor of ball movement.  Anyone have any theories as to why that's not the case?  I didn't watch enough NBA back in the period when Assist% apparently peaked (late 80s) to know.

Maybe it has something to do with how the point guard position has changed relatively recently to have a greater emphasis on scoring.

Two reasons...my guess is ISOs actually led to a bunch of assists off of the help coming while PnR has a bunch of shots taken without a pass (or more than you would think).  There's also some interplay in that while efficiency has gone up, actual shooting percentage only bottomed in the early 2000s (ie you only get assists off of made baskets....better said, ASST% and overall shooting percentage are highly correlated)

Pretty sharp there, smart guy.

Was debating between present title and:

I think the more interesting graph is the PTS/100 possessions, we're still not up to the late 80s/early 90s level.  Now granted defenses have improved, but I wonder how many more 3PTs need to be attempted per 100 possession to get back up there.

Back to this point ... are there "effective assist" and "true assist" stats anywhere that account for players creating made three pointers and/or made foul shots for their teammates?

D. Russell for Cousins.  Who says no?
If Westbrook had not re-upped, I'd love this deal.

With the NBA becoming a league where PGs who can shoot the 3 are invaluable, I'd have a hard time dealing Russell for a head case.  Also as the Lakers are constructed, Boogie doesn't make sense. Going small (Randle at the 5) wouldn't be an advantage and the Mozzy deal would be exponentionally worse.

And Russell has "intangibles".

One of my favorite aspects of League Pass is the ridiculous amount of time they spend showing the arena before the game. Plus, it makes it easier to get the ol' lady to not mind watching. She loves watching people in the stands get excited when they see themselves on the Jumbotron.

nylon calculus seems to have something close.  http://nyloncalculus.com/stats/true-usage/ (scroll down for more tables and descriptions)

  • Playmaking Effective Field Goal Percentage: eFG% of player’s teammates on shots assisted and potentially assisted by player.
  • Playmaking True Shooting Percentage: Estimate of “True Shooting Percentage” on playmaking chances including free throws and playmaking turnovers.
The assist location table is interesting also.

  • Total Assists: Total number of assists by the indicated player per NBA.com shot logs and play-by-play data.
  • Rim Area: Assists to baskets scored within the restricted area per NBA.com shot logs.
  • Non-Rim 2s: Assists to baskets scored outside of the restricted area buy inside the three point arc..
  • Threes: Total assists to made three pointers.
  • ATB 3s: Assists to Above the Break threes.
  • Corner 3s: Assists to corner 3s
  • MoreyBall: Total assists to three pointers and restricted area.
  • Rim%: Percentage of assists going to shots in the restricted area.
  • Three%: Percentage of assists to three point shots
  • Corner%: Percentage of all assists to corner 3s.
  • %3s Corner: Percentage of assists to three pointers made up by corner threes.
  • Morey%: Percentage of total assists going to threes or shots in the restricted area.

oh good, Embiid hurt his ankle.

This game is setting up to be the battle of the epic 2nd-half meltdowns.

and actually a rolled ankle is how Simmons' broken foot started.  good stuff.

Hawks have taken advantage of a weak schedule to be tied at the top of the East.  Despite blowing a big lead that was a good win against the Bucks in a back-to-back.  Hawks were missing 4 players due to injury.

I assume he's complaining about the hilariously obvious violation #highlighttruther
Yeah, I'm with Tobias. He was complaining to the refs about a clear violation. Rodriguez has been awful this year for me in BTTF though. I thought he was going to be Ricky Rubio with terrible defense. He's definitely passing the ball around but his shooting percentages make Emmanual Mudiay blush.
