NBA 2024 In-Season Tournament Challenge - Yo Mama Said Knock You Out Again! (1 Viewer)

EAST B
Detroit - 2-0, +6
Milwaukee - 1-0, +14
Miami - 1-1, +11
Indiana - 0-1, -13
Toronto - 0-2, -18

Det - @Ind, Mil
Mil - Ind, @Mia, @Det
Mia - Mil, Tor
Ind - @Mil, Det, @Tor
Tor - @Mia, Ind

Toronto looks done here since it looks fairly likely there is a team with at least 3 wins. Detroit is at the top, but still has to play two good teams. Lots still at play here.

EAST C
Atlanta - 2-0, +13
Boston - 1-1, +2
Cleveland - 1-1, +15
Washington - 0-1, -12
Chicago - 0-1, -18

Atl - @Chi, Cle
Bos - @Was, @Chi
Cle - @Atl, Was
Was - Bos, Chi, @Cle
Chi - Atl, @Was, Bos

This has a really good chance to end up with a 3-way tie at 3-1 if Atlanta can beat Chicago Friday. Boston has the tie breaker over Cleveland with last night’s win.

EAST A
Orlando - 2-0, +37
New York - 2-0, +14
Brooklyn - 1-1, -1
Philadelphia - 0-2, -24
Charlotte - 0-2, -26

Orl - @brk, @NY
NY - @cha, Orl
Brk - @PHI, Orl
Phi - Brk, @cha
Cha - NY, Phi

Barring any upsets, the Orl/NY game on the last night will determine the group winner. Philly and Charlotte are knocked out (one of Orl/NY will have at least 3 wins).
Magic alwaaaaaays struggle with the Nets. I actually expect they lose that game.

Time for some updated looks at the standings. There are only two more nights of group stage games (Fri/Tue). Let’s start in the east.

EAST A
Orlando - 2-0, +37
New York - 2-0, +14
Philadelphia - 1-2, -9
Brooklyn - 1-2, -16
Charlotte - 0-2, -26

Orl - @ Brk, @ NY
NY - @ Cha, Orl
Phi - @ Cha
Brk - Orl
Cha - NY, Phi

This one hasn’t really changed and is pretty straightforward. Philly, Brooklyn, and Charlotte are all knocked out from winning the group (winner of the Orl/NY game wins the group with at least 3 wins).

EAST B
Milwaukee - 3-0, +29
Detroit - 2-0, +6
Miami - 1-2, +8
Toronto - 0-2, -18
Indiana - 0-2, -25

Mil - @Det
Det - @ Ind, Mil
Mia - Tor
Tor - @ Mia, Ind
Ind - Det, @ Tor

This one is pretty straightforward too. Winner of the Mil/Det game on the last night wins the group (regardless of the Det/Ind result). Miami, Toronto, and Indiana are all eliminated from winning the group.

EAST C
Chicago - 2-1, +15
Atlanta - 2-1, -1
Boston - 2-1, +14
Cleveland - 1-1, +15
Washington - 0-3, -43

Chi - Bos
Atl - Cle
Bos - @ Chi
Cle - @ Atl, Was
Was - @ Cle

Our first totally nutty group. The only thing known right now is Washington is knocked out. Chicago has the tiebreaker over Atlanta, who has the tiebreaker over Boston, who would have the tiebreaker over Cleveland, who has the tiebreaker over Chicago, who has. . .

EAST WILDCARD
I doubt a 2-loss team gets the wildcard here, so I’m excluding all of those teams for now. (* = current group leader)

* Milwaukee - 3-0, +29 - @ Det
* Orlando - 2-0, +37 - @ Brk, @ NY
* Chicago - 2-1, +15 - Bos

New York - 2-0, +14 - @ Cha, Orl
Detroit - 2-0, +6 - @ Ind, Mil
Atlanta - 2-1, -1 - Cle
Boston - 2-1, +14 - @ Chi
Cleveland - 1-1, +15 - @ Atl, Was

Four of these eight teams will make the knockout stage in the East, with no teams clinched yet.

WEST A
Houston 3-0, +55 - clinched group win
Clippers - 1-1, -5
Portland - 1-1, -14
Minnesota - 1-2, -16
Sacramento - 0-2, -20

Hou - @ Sac
LA - @ Min, Por
Por - Sac, @ LA
Min - LA
Sac - @ Por, Hou

Houston has clinched the group (they already beat LA and Por). They are looking good for the #1 seed in the West with their huge point differential (only team with positive +\-) but they would need to win in Sacramento the last night.

WEST B
Phoenix - 2-1, +19
Lakers - 2-1, -16
San Antonio - 2-1, +14
Oklahoma City - 1-1, +10
Utah - 0-3, -27

Pho - SA
LA - OKC
SA - @ Pho
OKC - @ LA, Uta
Uta - @ OKC

Our second super nutty group, with only the elimination of Utah guaranteed. Phoenix has the tiebreaker over LA, who has the tiebreaker over SA, who has the tiebreaker over OKC, who has the tiebreaker over Phoenix, . . .

WEST C
Golden State - 3-0, +12 - clinched group
Dallas - 2-1, +41
New Orleans - 1-2, -38
Denver - 1-2, +2
Memphis - 0-2, -17

GS - @ Den
Dal - Mem
NO - @ Mem
Den - GS
Mem - NO, @ Dal

Golden State has clinched this group since they already beat Dallas. NO has the tiebreaker over Denver.

WEST WILDCARD
I’m leaving out the 2-loss teams for now because I’m lazy and because Dallas point differential is so big and also because they have the tiebreaker over Denver (who is the only 2-loss team even close +\-). * = current group leader.

* Houston - 3-0, +55 - @ Sac - CLINCHED
* Golden State - 3-0, +12 - @ Den - CLINCHED
* Phoenix - 2-1, +19 - SA

Dallas - 2-1, +41 - Men
Lakers - 2-1, -16 - OKC
San Antonio - 2-1, +14 - @ Pho
OKC - 1-1, +10 - @ LAL, Uta
Clippers 1-1, -5 - @ Min, Por
Portland 1-1, -14 - Sac, @ LAC

Wow, with the Hawks win, the Celtics can no longer win their group.

Boston beats Chicago, Hawks win East C. Chicago beats Boston, Chicago wins East C.

Also, any 2-loss team in the East is officially eliminated from the knockout stage. Two 3-1 teams guaranteed in East C.

Also, this means New York won’t be able to get the wildcard spot if they lose vs Orlando.

C - Atlanta 3-1, +15
C - Chicago 2-1, +15
C - Boston 2-1, +14

A - NY 3-0, +15 (would be 3-1 with lower than a +15 if they lose)

A - Orlando 2-0, +37 in much better position for a WC spot if they were to lose a game than NY is

Other teams still alive for the East wildcard:

B - Milwaukee 3-0, +29 - probably in good shape for the WC if they were to lose to Detroit
B - Detroit 2-0, +6 - not looking good for a WC spot if they lose a game

Boston needs to run up the score tonight, or they’ll be rooting for Orlando and Milwaukee to win their groups.

Orlando looking pretty locked into the knockout round with their impressive +60 differential - even if they lose to NY Tuesday.

OK, I’m on my second rum and Coke, so don’t be mad if my math is off. Here’s the East picture.

East C
Atlanta wins (has tiebreaker over Boston) - 3-1
Boston 3-1, +23

East A
Orlando 3-0, +60
New York 3-0, +15

East B
Detroit 3-0, +30
Milwaukee 3-0, +29

Orlando more than likely gets wildcard if they lose (as long as it’s not by 31 more than the Det/Mil loser)

New York can’t win the wildcard if they lose to the powerhouse Magic

Boston can only get wildcard if Orlando beats New York and if the Det/Mil loser loses their game by more than 6 or 7 points

Time to look at the West.

West A
Clinched - Houston 3-0 +55

Doesn’t matter what happens tomorrow since Houston beat the only 2-1 team in the group (Portland). Rockets are front runners for the #1 seed if they beat Sacramento tomorrow.

West C
Clinched - Golden State 3-0 +12

Like Houston, GS already beat the only 2-1 team in their group (Dallas). Doesn’t matter what happens tomorrow.

West B - now for the trickier one
Phoenix - 2-1 +19 - lost to OKC
OKC - 2-1 +18 - beat Pho, lost to SA
San Antonio - 2-1 +14 - beat OKC

OKC plays home vs Utah and SA plays at Phoenix tomorrow. If OKC and Phoenix win, OKC wins the group. If OKC and SA win, SA wins the group. If OKC loses, the Pho/SA winner wins the group.

West Wilcard
Dallas - 2-1 +41 - vs Mem
Phoenix - 2-1 +19 - vs SA
OKC - 2-1 +18 - vs Uta
San Antonio - 2-1 +14 - @ Pho
Portland - 2-1 -5 - @ LAC

It’s Dallas’ spot to lose. If they win, they’re in (barring a blowout win from the West B runner up). Portland looks like a long shot.

Lots still up for grabs tomorrow.

Last night of NBA Cup group action. Plenty of games with knockout stage implications.

Games Deciding Group Winner
4pm - Milwaukee vs Detroit - East B
4:30pm - Orlando vs New York - East A
5pm - Utah vs OKC - West B
6pm - SA vs Phoenix - West B

Games With Wild Card Implications
5:30pm - Memphis vs Dallas - West C
7:30pm - Portland vs Clippers - West A

Other Games
4pm - Philly vs Charlotte
4pm - Washington vs Cleveland
4:30pm - Indiana vs Toronto
7pm - Houston vs Sacramento - seeding implications
7pm - Golden St vs Denver - seeding implications

Boston is watching and hoping for an Orlando win and a blowout in the Mil/Det game.

Group Stage is complete!

One thing I noticed was a rule change by the league this year where points in overtime don’t count for the points for, against, and differential calculations. I’m not fixing my spreadsheet for this year so a couple of the point differentials are off (like Houston).

The results are in - we all suck at this!

Congratulations to @dunfee555 for sucking the least in the group stage (but somehow he only got 2 of the 8 knockout teams correct). The numbers reflected below are the total games picked incorrectly from the final group stage win results, so a lower number is better.

First Place - 20 - @dunfee555

Second place - 24 - @Frostillicus , @Capella , @Long Ball Larry , @scoobus

Last Place - 32 - @Desert_Power

Wow, I thought for sure I got lapped in this thing so surprised to see I'm middle of the pack.

I hadn't looked at this in a while and am pretty shocked to win the group stage, haha.

I figured I did terribly since all the teams I picked to advance were knocked out.

You got the wins exactly right for all teams in the West B group, but didn’t pick the right winner - the tiebreaker did you in.

Looking forward into the knockout round, we also suck at those projections. Here’s is how many of the 8 knockout teams we all got right (the East was especially rough.

4 - @Frostillicus , @Eephus , @Dr. Octopus

3 - @Yo Mama , @Jayrod , @Zow

2 - @Capella , @dunfee555 , @Long Ball Larry , @Desert_Power , @scoobus

1 - @Kev4029 , @the moops

Only 3 people have their champ still alive (all OKC) and only 2 others have a finalist still alive.

We’re not very good at this.
I have 3. GSW, NYK and OKC

Good catch, I updated the spreadsheet.

NBA Cup Semi-Finals are set

OKC vs Houston
Atlanta vs Milwaukee

Looks like our knockout champ is locked in, regardless of the remaining results.

Congrats to @Dr. Octopus for winning the knockout round! Here are the current knockout standings.

8pts - @Dr. Octopus - 2 semi-finalists, OKC champion

6pts - @Frostillicus - 1 semi-finalist, no finalists left

5pts - @Jayrod - 1 semi-finalist, OKC champion
5pts - @Long Ball Larry - 1 semi-finalist, OKC champion

So Jayrod and Larry can pass Frosty for a second place tie if OKC beats Houston, but they can’t catch DocOc.

Thanks everyone for playing!
