NBA 2023-2024 In-Season Tournament Challenge - Yo Mama Said Knock You Out! (1 Viewer)

West A

Standings

LA Lakers (3-0, +42)
Utah (2-1, +19)
Phoenix (1-1, +0)
Portland (1-2, -26)
Memphis (0-3, -35) - ELIMINATED

Remaining Games
11/21 - Portland vs Phoenix
11/21 - Utah vs LA Lakers
11/24 - Phoenix vs Memphis

Lakers are the only 3-0 team in group play so far (there are a number of 2-0 teams), but they haven’t clinched a spot in the knockout round yet. If they lose to Utah Tuesday the Jazz get the tiebreak, but if Phoenix wins out there would be a 3-way tie and we go to point differential.

Huge win for the Pelicans tonight, but they still cant clinch the group with a win next week if Houston wins out (Hou has tiebreaker). This has been the most competitive group top to bottom.

West C

Standings

Sacramento (2-0, +16)
Minnesota (2-0, +10)
Golden State (1-1, -1)

Kings win tonight pushes them to the group lead. Their remaining games against both Min and GS are huge. OKC can’t win the group, but are still barely alive for wild card with their point differential thanks to their blowout of SA.

Tuesday, November 21, 20237:00 PMUtahLA LakersWest A

A small slate of games tonight, but we’ll have a lot more clarity in the East A and West A groups.

The last game of the night has the most stakes. If the Lakers win, they win the group and likely wrap up the #1 seed. If Utah wins, it officially knocks out any 2-loss team in the West and takes the lead in the group (needs a loss by Phoenix to win the group).

Both East A games are also big since all four can still win the group. Indiana can clinch the group with a win tonight.

Let’s look at some of the teams that are done or clinched so far. There are 13 total entries in our challenge.

East A
- Philly 2 wins - 5 people had 2 wins, 7 had 3, 1 had 4
- Indiana group winner - nobody had them in the knockout round

West A
- Lakers 4 wins - nobody had them with 4, 8 had 3 wins, 5 had 2
- Utah 2 wins - 7 had them with 2 wins, 4 had 1 win, 2 had 3 wins
- Portland 1 win - 10 had 1 win, 3 had 0 wins
- Lakers win and advance - 7 had them in the knockout (only 1 had them win the group but it counts the same)

For the 4 complete teams, here is how everyone’s predictions sit for the group stage portion (smaller differential is better):

- 2 win differential - me, @caustic , @dunfee555 , @Jayrod , @Dr. Octopus , @scoobus

- 3 win differential - @nysfl2 , @BassNBrew , @Frostillicus , @the moops , @AAABatteries

- 4 win differential - @Desert_Power

- 5 win differential - @Eephus

I’ll get the on line file fixed this weekend after the Friday games.

Hope everyone has a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Suck it @Eephus

Apologies if this has been discussed in the main NBA thread but intensity in the IST seems a little higher than the normal November games, although maybe that's the effect of the court designs on my feng shui.

Yeah it’s awesome a lot of the players (Halliburton, LeBron, etc) have really bought in. It’s not quite playoff level but 1000x better than typical November basketball.

Got some Black Friday day games. Only one IST group stage day after today.

That Phoenix win knocks out any West team with 2 losses in group play - Utah, OKC, Dal, LAC.

The garbage time scoring also helps the Suns wild card chances.

Lots of us had Denver going far in the knockout rounds. They just got eliminated with their loss to the Rockets tonight.

Just saw this thread. Very informative.

I still wish this whole thing started later in the season and wasn't on so often. Seems like half the games I turn on are with the coloured courts.

East A

Standings

Indiana (4-0, +39) - WON GROUP
Cleveland (2-1, +6)
Philadelphia (2-2, +9)
Atlanta (1-2, -9)
Detroit (0-4, -45) - ELIMINATED

Remaining Games
11/28 - Atlanta vs Cleveland

Somehow, the East 2-loss teams are still barely alive for the wildcard, but they’ll need a lot of help (more to come on that).

East B

Standings

Milwaukee (3-0, +39)
New York (2-1, +18)
Miami (2-1, +11)
Charlotte (1-2, -30) - BASICALLY ELIMINATED
Washington (0-4, -38) - ELIMINATED

Remaining Games
11/28 - Milwaukee vs Miami
11/28 - Charlotte vs New York

- Mil wins group with a win and would get the #1 seed in the East. They’re also looking pretty good for the wild card if they lose.

- Mia wins the group with a win and a NY loss

- If Mia and NY win, we get a 3-way tie and go to point differential. Mia would need to beat Mil by 15 or more to pass them. If Mia wins by 5, NY would have to win by 17 to win the group (they need to make up 22 points on Mil). Mil has a big points scored advantage on Mia and NY if the point differential is tied.

Phew - this doesn’t even take into account wild card chances.

East C

Standings

Orlando (3-1, +22)
Brooklyn (2-1, +8)
Boston (2-1, +0)
Toronto (1-2, -9)
Chicago (0-3, -21) - ELIMINATED

Remaining Games
11/28 - Chicago vs Boston
11/28 - Toronto vs Brooklyn

- Orlando wins the group with a Brooklyn loss (regardless if Boston wins or loses)

- Brooklyn wins the group with a win and a Boston loss

- If Brooklyn and Boston both win, there is a 3-way tie and go to point differential. Brooklyn would have to win by 14 to pass Orlando (as long as they score more than 106 points). Boston would have to win by 23 points to pass Orlando and win by 9 more than Brooklyn to pass them.

Another crazy group going down to the wire.

- Mil wins #1 seed if they win

- Ind is guaranteed a home game in the quarterfinals

- Surprisingly, the 2-loss teams could still sneak into the wildcard spot if all the 1-loss teams lose (and by enough points)

- There could be some wild garbage time action (see the Phoenix update next) with point differential being the tie breaker with all those 1-loss teams and only one of those teams making it to the next round.

- All of those 1-loss teams besides Cle can still win their groups.

West A

Standings

LA Lakers (4-0, +74) - WON GROUP
Phoenix (3-1, +34)
Utah (2-2, -13) - ELIMINATED
Portland (1-3, -39) - ELIMINATED
Memphis (0-4, -56) - ELIMINATED

Remaining Games
none

- Our only complete group, with a Lakers/Suns quarterfinal matchup nearly guaranteed with their point differentials.

- Suns knew the assignment against Mem, keeping their starters in the game to the end, even with a large lead and the zombie Grizzlies emptying their bench with a few minutes left. Booker banked in a last second 3 at the end of the game that ended up giving them the tiebreaker over NO for the wildcard.

West B

Standings

New Orleans (3-1, +33)
Houston (2-1, +18)
Denver (2-2, -10) - ELIMINATED
Dallas (1-2, -14) - ELIMINATED
LA Clippers (1-3, -27) - ELIMINATED

Remaining Games
11/28 - Houston vs Dallas

- Houston wins the group with a win over Dallas due to their head to head win over NO

- Pelicans win the group with a Houston loss. They are eliminated with a Hou win since Booker banked in that garbage time 3 to take the wildcard tiebreaker

West C

Standings

Sacramento (3-0, +29)
Golden State (2-1, +5)
Minnesota (2-1, -3)
Oklahoma City (1-2, +27) - ELIMINATED
San Antonio (0-4, -58) - ELIMINATED

Remaining Games
11/28 - Oklahoma City vs Minnesota
11/28 - Golden State vs Sacramento

- another crazy group with a couple massive games on Tuesday

- Sac wins the group with a win over GS and locks in a quarterfinal home game. They’d need to beat them by 46 points to pass up the Lakers for #1 seed.

- GS wins the group with a win and a Min loss.

- If GS and Min both win, we get another 3-way tie that goes down to point differential. GS would need to win by 12 to pass Sac (GS would have the points scored tiebreak). Min would have to win by 9 more points than GS to pass them.

- The Sac/GS game is after all the other games, so they will know what they’ll need to do before the end of their game.

West Knockout Picture

Group Leaders

A - LA Lakers (4-0, +74)
C - Sacramento (3-0, +29) - vs GS
B - New Orleans (3-1, +33)

Wild Card Race
A - Phoenix (3-1, +34)
B - Houston (2-1, +18) - @ Dal
C - Golden State (2-1, +5) - @ Sac
C - Minnesota (2-1, -3) - vs OKC

Knocked Out
B - Denver (2-2, -10)
A - Utah (2-2, -13)
C - Oklahoma City (1-2, +27)
B - Dallas (1-2, -14)
B - LA Clippers (1-3, -27)
A - Portland (1-3, -39)
A - Memphis (0-4, -56)
C - San Antonio (0-4, -58)

- Sacramento can’t win a wildcard spot with a loss. NO also can’t win the wildcard spot if they don’t win their group.

- GS and/or Min (if they don’t win their group) would have to win in blowouts to catch up to Phoenix for the wildcard (Hou wins their group if they win vs Dal).

My prediction is that the Pistons are the answer to the trivia question "who was the last team to win an inseason tournament NBA game.

My guess us 14 games before their first win.

Crazy that in a group with Denver, Dallas, and the Clippers that none of them would make it to the knockout.

I almost tagged you next to their spot in the standings.

Ok, time to look at how are picks are coming in. First off, the group stage. Here is where we stand for all the teams that are final as of Friday:

- Mem 2 wins - nobody picked 0 wins, 2 picked 1 win, 11 picked 2 wins

- Pho 3 wins - 12 picked 3 wins, 1 picked 2 wins

- Den 2 wins - 1 picked 2 wins, 7 picked 3 wins, 5 picked 4 wins. Lots of us had them going far in the knockout but they’re eliminated.

- LAC 1 win - nobody picked 1 win, 11 had 2 wins, 2 had 3 wins

- NO 3 wins - 2 picked 3 wins, 6 picked 2 wins, 5 picked 1 win

- SA 0 wins - 3 picked 0 wins, 8 picked 1win, 2 picked 2 wins

- Ind 4 wins - nobody picked 4 or 3 wins, 8 picked 2 wins, 5 picked 1 win

- Det 0 wins - 2 picked 0 wins, 8 picked 1 win, 3 stupidly picked 2 wins

-Was 0 wins - 2 picked 0 wins, 11 picked 1 win

- Orl 3 wins - nobody picked 3 wins (@Capella didn’t participate), 8 picked 2 wins, 5 picked 1 win

My quarterfinal predictions:

East
WC NY (3-1) @ #1 Ind (4-0)
#3 Orl (3-1) @ #2 Mil (3-1)

- Mil loses a close one to Mia, NY gets a double digit win over Cha, but not by enough to pass Mil for the group win
- Bos wins and Brk loses, giving Orl the group win

West
WC Pho (3-1) @ #1 LAL (4-0) - basically a lock
#3 Sac (3-1) @ #2 NO (3-1)

- Hou loses at Dallas, giving the group to NO
- GS and Min both win, but not by enough to pass Sac for the group win

It’s wild all five games in the East are at the same time. Every game has stakes, and teams will be playing hard the full 48 minutes to rack up that precious point differential.

6 spots in the knockout round are up for grabs tonight.

Hoping for another NBA TV crunch time tonight.

Demar DeRozan might have an aneurysm.

BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

How does NBA TV not have crunch time (their version of red zone) tonight with all the IST games being played at the same time?

Boston passes Orlando’s point differential, but still needs Brooklyn to beat Toronto.

Knicks looking good for wildcard and can even still win their group if Milwaukee loses.

Crazy night.
