2016 ACC Basketball (closed - see 2017 thread) (1 Viewer)

Congrats to state on landing Yurtseven. If he's eligible (and it seems like he will be) they're gonna have a heck of a front court. Add in Dennis Smith (hoping he's healthy) and Rowan making shots and they could be dangerous. Could use some better wing players though.

Abu is staying, which will help.

They have two transfers in Dorn and Henderson who will upgrade the wing. I expect Henderson to start and Dorn to get 6th man minutes. Plus, I assume Rowan's baptism by fire last season, plus more offensively talented players around him, means he will play better.

This stands to be the most talented team State has fielded since the Valvano era. Both Smith and Yurtseven are possible one and done NBA lottery picks, and obviously Abu thinks he will be drafted next year. Very much looking forward to the season.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that over the last 20 years...

:P

Honestly, I think that Dorn/Henderson have much higher upside than the Martin twins, and that's why they took off.

Excited about the relatively surprising roster turnaround this spring for the bball team.

I sat beside the Martin twins mother at a baseball game a couple months ago, and she said her sons like Gottfried, but they feel like they could excel more in a different style offense. She was vague. She said it had been a tough season. Personally, I agree with you on Dorn/Henderson have more upside, and I believe the Martin twins know that, and that is why they transferred. I've never felt the twins are that good in the first place.

lol

The Martins definitely transferred because they were going to lose minutes. There was no way around that, with Dorn and Henderson moving into the rotation. I wish they had stayed, but their departure will actually make the rotation easier for Gott, with less potential for dissension.

I also heard that Freeman is going to redshirt, which had been rumored for a while.

Not sure Gott is done adding players to the class yet, we'll see.

LOL  Anya is returning. Hopefully it will be a good season.   :wolf:

John Feinstein has a new book out about Dean Smith, Coach K, and Jim Valvano. It's called The Legends Club. Good stuff.
pretty much required reading for anyone raised on 1980s ACC hoops.

JWB, keep reading, at least through Chapter 28. This section about Valvano's illness and death, plus the later section on Dean's illness and death, truly shine.

i have long had a visceral (perhaps to point of irrationality) negative reaction to anyone who suggests that Coach K's back surgery and time-off in 1995 was anything less than legitimate.

in reading this book, i learned that Valvano's cancer was discovered after he went to the doctor complaining about back pains that wouldn't subside. When you combine that with the fact that Coach K spent hours upon hours, days upon days, sitting at JV's hospital bedside, creating a bigger-than-basketball bond, it should lend a keener understanding of how K would have reacted to his own chronic back pain arising a year after Jimmy died.

Raised on 80s ACC basketball and being a big college basketball fan in general, I would have had a healthy respect for Coach K regardless. But the way he bonded with Valvano in that time, along with the way he talks about that subject, has raised my respect for him quite a bit. I haven't gotten to this section of the book yet but will read the whole thing for sure.

I know there are some Cuse fans that were unhappy with the move, but apparently it was a good move financially

Financial report highlights just how critical it was for Syracuse to escape Big East for ACC

"The Orange received $23.9 million in conference payouts from the ACC last year, the lowest total for a member of the conference. Former rival UConn, meanwhile, earned less than half that, despite topping the American Athletic Conference in the size of its payout. Connecticut received $10.6 million from its conference, which is widely-regarded as the sixth-best in the country. During the previous year, the ACC's lowest payout was $17.9 million, while the American's highest was $10.7."

I suspect someone will be able to write a similar article about Maryland in a few years.

Gott has done it again, as 4 star PG Markell Johnson has committed to State. Pretty strong recruiting class for this year:

  • 5 star PG DSJ
  • 5 star C Yurtseven
  • 4 star PG Johnson
  • 3 star SF Hicks
  • 2 star walk-on SG Newman (supposedly a great shooter)
And the staff is still recruiting, with a great shot at getting transfer CG Malik Newman, who was a top 10 player in last year's class.

It remains to be determined if Yurtseven will be required to sit out games and/or if Johnson will qualify, as he is attempting to reclassify from 2017 to 2016. Assuming they both play in 2016-17, State will have a top 8 that should be competitive with any team in the country: PG DSJ, PG Johnson, SG Henderson, SG/SF Dorn, SF Rowan, PF Abu, PF/C Yurtseven, C Anya. (Assuming PF Freeman redshirts.)

And now 4 star PF Ted Kapita has committed!

This is going to be quite a roster transformation, adding all of these freshmen and also getting transfers Dorn and Henderson on the floor as well.

Time for someone to fire up the 2016-2017 thread.   I don't feel comfortable with that responsibility.  Really excited about this Duke team this year.   The march towards phoenix begins tonight against Marist.

Totally underwhelmed by the start of the Stallings Era at Pitt.  Eastern Michigan isn't a bad team, but they also aren't a great team, so a double-overtime win isn't exactly what I had in mind.  Defense let their guards drive to the hoop at will, Michael Young continues to give away nearly as many points with his turnovers as he scores, and the offense in general consisted of "throw up a 3 and pray".  All the hype has been changing the offense from Dixon's "slow, plodding pass it around until the shot clock expires", but I swear that's exactly what I was watching last night.

State got a close win at home over Georgia Southern. Closer than desired, but a win with an 8 man rotation that included 3 freshmen, transfer Dorn who sat out last season, and transfer Henderson who sat out all but 7 minutes of the past 2 seasons. And without 2 rotation players who were sitting out due to eligibility -- Kapita, who has now been declared eligible, and Yurtseven, who has to sit out 8 more games.

I expect there will be a lot of growing pains over the non-conference schedule, but this team should be really good by the time conference play begins. :wolf:
