***2016 MLB Playoff thread: Cubs win for first time since sliced bread hit market (1 Viewer)

Gotta give Joe Maddon a ton of credit for going with Javier Baez over Zobrist as the season has gone along.  Baez, much maligned and IMO unfairly so for his stint last year, is absolutely an amazing player.  We haven't even seen his power upside yet, but he's an A+ fielder and he's a great bat in a sea of great bats.  Bryant and Rizzo are the heart, Baez and Russell are the soul. 

And they don't even have Kyle Schwarber!  Sure they were terrible for years and got high picks and plum trades, but those five guys there are all completely legit.   Sprinkle in a Dexter Fowler and a guy like David Ross, and that's a ridiculous line-up and defensive team.  They screwed up with Heyward but he's great in the field also, so you can live with it.  Plus their pitching is good too!  Sick.

 
I was out w/ Mrs Eephus and missed the game but it sounds like the same club I've been watching since July.  This was probably the most exasperating Giants' team since the late Bonds era squads..  I'll remember their two playoff victories fondly and Conor Gillaspie will always be alright by me.  But I'm glad I'll never have to see this particular bullpen ever again.

In a 7 game series I see no reason to run Kershaw out on 4 days rest. Play him in games 2/6 unless 5 is an elimination games.

Schwarber, with his lack of a position to play and 300ish MLB plate appearances and your're labeling him as legit? Little early for that, don't you think?

The first game of the NLCS is Saturday so Kershaw would only be on three days' rest after pitching yesterday.

Let's not forget the farm system is STILL ####### loaded. 

This year will be a nice story, but non-Cubs fans are going to hate these bastards for a very long time.

Yeah, I wasn't even considering hanging that one up. I had Blue Jays, White Sox, and Royals too but no idea where those went. I broke Giants and Mets. I won all but the Tigers one playing the velocity pitching game where you had to guess what speed your 3rd pitch would be. I killed that game, win 5 or 6 for friends in a school trip to Cedar Point. 

The Phillies helmet has #35 on the bill, something I put there. Have to look up who #35 was between 1982 and 1985, which would be the years I used these.

Had so many of those things when I was a kid. Later on added a few more when one of our friends worked the speed throw booth at the local amusement park and all of us would go down there and blow out our arms trying to top each other (78 was my personal best). I don't know what happened to most of them, except for the Dale Murphy-era Braves one that go smashed off my head by a buddy with a Wiffle bat during one particularly intense game, and got a proper burial in his backyard (thankfully not with me in it).

I'm pretty sure the beautiful tri-color Expos version is hanging out in my attic.

This might be unrelated, but I once had a dream (nightmare?) that I got ejected from a baseball game when the umpire rung me up on Strike 2. I was facing Ron Reed, and he posed like this on his follow-through just to rub it in.

I assume there had been drinking involved the night before.

When do the games start again?

8 PM tonight.

FWIW (probably nothing because I'm a miserable :homer: who always assumes the worst) I like the value on the Dodgers tonight.  Scherzer's one vulnerability is to lefty power (.415 slg for his career. 442 slg in 2016), and the Dodgers have lefty power at virtually every spot in the lineup. The big question mark is how Hill does on short rest on the other side of things. I have no idea how short rest affects curveball guys. 

The Nats do hit lefties pretty well, so that helps their case a bit, but +140 still looks like the better side to me given the matchup nightmare for Scherzer. He's also been off the last few starts, there was something in the paper today about his release point having shifted down a bit.

I really like the idea of the 'Dusty comes back to haunt the Cubs' story line, so please don't let your pessimism get in the way of that.

Dusty just said it would be a "miracle" if Strasburg is ready for a potential NLCS start, so the Nats may not be your best choice to keep the Cubs out of the WS.

I have no problem with them getting there, or even winning it. If they happen to come up short, I want it to come with the best possible back story.

 
I didn't realize the Nats' SS played in CF.

The Espinosa problem is this: The Nats’ everyday shortstop is having a hysterically, legendarily bad NLDS. Through Tuesday’s Game 4, he is 1-11 at the plate, with eight strikeouts. In the eight at-bats that ended in strikeouts, Espinosa saw a total of just 34 pitches, just a hair over four per at-bat. In those eight at-bats, he has seen just 10 pitches that were not strikes one, two, or three.

This sounds like ME trying to hit major league pitching.  Wow. 

 
I know this is not an earth-shattering opinion, but it's really amazing how punchable A-Rod is. He's really not that bad as a studio guy, but still, he seems like a guy pretending to be a pretty good studio guy for some reason.

Less A-Rod and more Pete and Hurt would be nice on that FS1 show.

I would shocked if A-Rod has never killed another human being. He's Patrick Bateman, Dexter, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Mark Paul Gossler all rolled into one.
