2018 MLB Regular Season Thread! Current thread batting average: .420 (3 Viewers)

Castellanos, who was deserving regardless of how bad his team is, was told he wasn’t going because the AL didn’t have enough pitchers. So Joe Jimenez is there and if he wasn’t, both Castellanos and Snell would be on the team. Which would be right.
It's kind of a perfect storm of terrible-ness at positions, bad decisions by the players selection and the requirement to have a player from every team.

Particularly in the AL, catcher is very bad - Wilson Ramos is having a good season but I'm not sure he's an all star most years and Salvador Perez shouldn't be anywhere near the roster but is voted on by the players because he's been good for a long time. Whit Merrifield should really be the Royals rep in the same way Castellanos should be the Tigers.

First base in the AL is a wasteland too. Toronto doesn't really deserve a rep this season but I thought their rep would be Justin Smoak, who has been arguably the best offensive 1B in the AL this season. This would take Happ out of the equation and open up a spot for Snell as well. You can argue Smoak is a top 2 or 3 1B in the AL this season, where there's no real case for Happ over Snell, Morton, Paxton, etc...

To your point, it should be Castellanos and Snell over Jimenez and a position player but needing a backup catcher, I guess it becomes Springer or Brantley who get bumped out but they were selected by the players.

Can't complain about them, but I went Segura and Aguilar.  I still can't believe that they put Trea Turner in the final vote.
First vote update:

American League
1. Jean Segura, Mariners
2. Andrew Benintendi, Red Sox
3. Giancarlo Stanton, Yankees
4. Eddie Rosario, Twins
5. Andrelton Simmons, Angels

National League
1. Jesus Aguilar, Brewers
2. Brandon Belt, Giants
3. Max Muncy, Dodgers
4. Trea Turner, Nationals
5. Matt Carpenter, Cardinals

Not bad, though Stanton is too high.

How much money is Harper costing himself, or is he? I really can’t fathom a team giving him what he wants after what he’s shown this season. At least for the last couple months.

Boras will come out and say that he was playing hurt all year which caused the bad average.

Rays minor league team is having a little promotion  I’ve never been more proud to be a fan:

Nice series even with this loss. Took 3/4 from Houston and have won 19/24. 53-41 on the season. Still a mile back in any playoff picture.
The Oaklands have quietly put together a nice season and can at least see the wild card from where they are now.  They've beaten up on AL Central opponents but are under .500 within their division.

I don't think they're in a position to be a buyer this month but they don't have many obvious assets to sell either.  I guess Treinen is a good sell-high candidate but he's under team control for two more years.

Agree. Was another nice comeback today. I'm not sure how they can make up 6 games. They have 10 left with Seattle and probably have to win 7 or more of those to get back in it.

I think if a team is within single digit games behind at the ASB, they're still in the race, sort of.

Oakland's run differential is better than Seattle's.  The Mariners have been defying Pythagoras all season but I still don't believe in their pitching staff.  One thing in their favor is that the right to lose a post-season game on the road is more important to Seattle than any other MLB contender.  They don't have much talent to trade but that won't stop Di Poto from trying.

Y’all should do a “Boomer Night” where the price of admission and all concessions are deferred to the patrons of the next 3 games.

Paxton possibly needing a backiotomy after tonight would really expose that pitching staff. Let's all hope it doesn't happen though because Big Maple is the best and also probably the best chance of either of these teams at handing the AL East runner up a devastating wild card loss.

Buxton had an 893 OPS with 24 XBHs and 13 steals in the 2nd half last year. I think most thought that was his bust out but with the contact issues and all the injuries, this is gonna be a lost year. Too bad because he’s one of the best CFers I’ve ever seen, and his skills across the board look elite at times.

ESPN's Buster Olney was told by a source that the Manny Machado trade talks are at the "10-yard-line."

The same source told him a week ago that talks were at the 35-yard-line, for what it's worth. The Phillies, Brewers and Dodgers appear to have emerged as the three favorites for Machado and are "waiting for the goal line call," per Olney. The Yankees had been heavily involved in the Machado sweepstakes but appear to have fallen behind the pack at this point. It seems unlikely at this point that Machado will be traded before the All-Star break, but a deal sometime later this week is looking fairly likely.

The level of prospects that are now being reported seem like they are worth it to me.

Futures game was great. Loved seeing all these guys I never get to see in person, in the same place at the same time.

Even though he got mashed, seeing Hunter Greene in person was the best part of the game. 102 mph, 101, 100, 102 and he’s not even 19. Basabe just obliterated that ball he hit though, curious in the exit velocity. The other Reds prospect Trammell looked terrific also.

Fernando Tatis has an amazing presence for a 20-year-old. I’ve seen him before but can’t wait until he’s in the majors.

Celebrity softball game was meh except for Dascha Polanco’s terrific, giant culo. Shaq hitting was funny I guess. There was someone in my section heckling Bill Nye, which was quite amazing.

Jose Ramirez always looks like he's disgusted that he's better than everyone else. What an old school ball player.
A good reason why scouts missed the boat on him. It was basically one Cleveland scout that saw what he is, and he’s even surprised how good he is.
