HATE having that moron on MLB Network over lunch instead of the better shows that are on before and after him.
During the day I have 2 go-to channels. MLBN and Food Network. Obviously can't stand Russo and I have a very unwarranted, but all to real hatred for The Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond. So the noon hour usually leaves me scrambling for something else.

Yulieski Gurriel will start season on DL following hand surgery.  I hope the doctors fixed his hair while he was under anesthesia.

Daniel Nava had back surgery and will be out for 3 months.  Pittsburgh's acquisition of Corey Dickerson makes the injury less of an event.

Fixed?  Top 10 hair in the game.

No truth to the rumor that he sprained both index fingers trying to make the squinted eyes slur

It occurs to me that MLB would be better off pushing out the accept/decline for QOs.  Right now its a short window early in free agency.  Why not push it out to January and really give the player a chance to determine his market?  I think you'd see more players accept the QO in that scenario...and the owners would save some face.

Something needs to change for sure. Teams are more reluctant than ever to give up draft picks and its costing the FA with picks attached a lot of money.

You will definitely see more players accept the QO after this off-season. I remember everyone was shocked when Hellickson accepted it last year. He was ahead of the curve.

But it really didn't work out well for Hellickson in the end.  He got paid last year but his performance regressed from 2016.  He's back on the market now and hasn't signed yet in spite of no compensation requirements.

If this is truly the end of the road for him, you're right. Let this be a lesson to all the crappy pitchers out there. Always take the years.

Probably why Arrieta is so adamant about getting 4+ year deal.

I didn't realize the compensation pick for a player who rejects the qualifying offer expires after the draft, and does not roll over to next year.

I read that Arrieta's plan is to wait it out, and sign somewhere after the All-Star break. His hook to teams will be because of rest he can go full throttle for the last two months of the season.

This is kind of brilliant.

I'm torn because I really like Jake and hope he ends up somewhere awesome for him, but I love when Scott Boras is publicly humiliated.

Because tony Clark is so out of his depth it’s crazy

No as a matter of fact it was recently changed. Used to be a first round pick now I think it's a second and fifth or something like that.
The current qualifying offer based system is better than than the old type A/B rating system.

It's not unreasonable for a club to get some compensation if they lose a top free agent.  The fact that 7 of the 9 FAs who declined the QO have signed indicates the compensation pick isnt' a deal breaker.

The competitive balance tax had a bigger impact on the market than the compensation picks this year, especially because teams over the CBT threshold pay higher compensation if they sign a QO FA.

We'll see if the 3/$75M deal for Arrieta is the new normal for pitchers not named Kershaw (or Bumgarner).  The track record for long deals for pitchers is terrible.   A shorter deal even at a higher AAV gives the Phillies more flexibility to ramp up payroll if their window opens.

i feel like this 3/75 arrieta deal is already bad.  just seems like a guy starting the downturn after lots of use.....
Given his mechanics he's risky. But if he stays healthy and finds his groove then he is a domiinant number two and capable lead horse.

L. Lynn's contract is the biggest head scratcher for me. 1/12mill

How does every contender not beat that offer?
His 4.75 XFIP, falling K/9 rate, and high walk rate might have something to do with it.  He was gross last year, Steamer is projecting a FIP of 5 this year.  lololololol

It'll be his second year back after TJ surgery.  Lynn, Berrios, Santana, Odorizzi plus somebody is a decent rotation and certainly a big improvement over last year's playoff staff.

ETA:  1/$12M is a cheap date.

The point though is that he had a 14.2% HR/FB ratio last year.  People are shocked that the Dodgers or D'Backs weren't in the hunt for Lynn, but he was quite terrible last year.  Maybe Lynn returns the mid 3s WAR guy he was, but he's probably just as likely to be the 1.4 WAR guy he was last year.
