2018 NHL Offseason Thread: E.Karlsson is a Shark! (1 Viewer)

agreed. if it costs $11MM * 8, you have to factor that into the equation as well.

I'm not sure a team could trade MacKinnon for him. I don't think Karlsson is a clear upgrade over Doughty. Taylor Hall would be tough to part with now. Other than that though, I have a hard time saying a team would be better off keeping guys like Patrick Kane or Barkov or Stamkos or Malkin than they would be with Karlsson on the team.
But is it enough of an upgrade to rip out a huge identity of your team?  While I don't disagree that from a strict talent/longevity perspective it would make sense, but from a team perspective I don't think so.

Yea Karlsson is definitely a better player than stamkos at this point but do you trade your captain and huge part of franchise for him? Trades just aren’t made in a vacuum.

sure there are other considerations, and some of those intangible factors probably make guys more untouchable than just their talent level. I'd agree with that. I think he's just saying from a talent perspective, the list of guys you wouldn't trade for Karlsson should be extremely small.

What are some recent cap dump deals in the $5MM-$6MM range? I'd like a benchmark for what I should be extorting out of Cappy.

My initial thought is...change the condition on the upcoming second for it to turn into a 2020 1st if TB wins the cup. And then add in the 2019 1st on top.

Datsyuk (had 1 year left at $7.5MM) traded to Coyotes with 16th pick for the 20th pick and the 53rd pick and Joe Vitale

Dave Bolland (had 3 years left at $5.5MM) traded to Coyotes with Lawson Crouse for a 3rd round pick in 2017 and conditional 2nd round pick in 2018

If that's the case, you can find another team to grease your path to the Cup.

NHL network showed a replay of the 2013 world junior championship game between USA and Sweden.

USA pretty loaded on the blue line with Seth Jones, Jacob Trouba, Shayne Gostisbehere, and Jake McCabe with John Gibson in net. Not a ton up front but they have Gaudreau, JT Miller, and Galchenyuk.

meanwhile, this Sweden team has Wennberg, Arvidsson, Forsberg, W.Karlsson, Lindholm, Rakell, and Rask. Pretty strong group up front.

Russia team took bronze on a 6-5 OT win over Canada with Kucherov and Vasilevskiy plus Grigorenko and Nichuskin

Canada was blown out 5-1 by the USA in the semifinals despite a loaded roster with MacKinnon, Scheifele, Nugent-Hopkins, Huberdeau, Ryan Strome with Dougie Hamilton and Morgan Rielly on defense with Malcolm Subban in net.

this was just 5 years ago, but there are so many future stars in this tournament.

Interesting article here on Scott Darling. I alluded to hearing he was drinking again last year and there isn't much in here that makes me think otherwise. Sounds like he's going to be better prepared for this season though.

Jan Kovar's one-year deal with the #isles is worth $2M.

Had really good numbers in the KHL and for the price it's certainly seems like a decent gamble here by Lou.

Ducks to retire #9 and #27.  Very happy about this.  :hifive:

Looks like Ducks in Vegas on my Bday and PK ceremony in ANA vs The Rudes next day.

Yzerman!

Big news from Lightning: Nikita Kucherov signed to eight-year extension, paying $9.5 million a year starting in 2019-20. Story up soon.

Kucherov's $9.5M AAV in Florida is almost identical to making $12M in California or $11M in NY after state tax, or $10.9M in Ontario after provincial tax.
lol @ first response to that tweet

Replying to @TheFourthPeriod

But you have to live in Florida.

I wonder if they will ever try to make an adjustable cap for those type of reasons. Hope not.
hadn't thought about this before:

Kucherov at 9.5/year. TB has a handful of guys making in the 4-6 range and only a couple are considered keepers. The NTC/NMC players will be tough to move.

The dark underside of no-tax states that nobody talks about. Have fun moving your NTCs when you're asking guys to effectively take a paycut.

also, this is crazy since they are still in on Karlsson:

tampa has 12 guys signed for $65.8m next season before they add karlsson

@reporterchris: Extending Nikita Kucherov does not take #TBLightning out of the Erik Karlsson trade talks. Quite the opposite; it gives them more certainty about their future.

Word is they continue to engage outside teams on a potential three-way deal with OTT.

Connor Hellebuyck has signed a 6 year, $37 million contract (AAV: $6.167M) with the Winnipeg Jets.

wow, as an RFA off one good year.  who had the leverage there?  I think it will end up being a very good deal for them but pretty surprised they had to pay that much now.

Hossa traded to the Coyotes (with Hinostroza)

I’m hearing Jordan Oesterle could be included too and multiple pieces are coming back to the Blackhawks.

Craig Morgan‏Verified account @craigsmorgan

League source says this is a large deal with multiple pieces going both ways. Awaiting more details.

OFFICIAL: The #Blackhawks have acquired Marcus Kruger, MacKenzie Entwistle, Jordan Maletta, Andrew Campbell and a 2019 fifth-round draft pick from Arizona in exchange for Marian Hossa, Vinnie Hinostroza, Jordan Oesterle and a 2019 third-round pick.

Did Arizona do this to meet minimum salary obligations or are Hinostroza and Oesterle worth it?  I read the article you posted about taking on players that won't play because they have cap space and it was interesting. I don't know these players and am wondering why the Coyotes would make this deal.

Arizona got two nice pieces in Hinostroza and Oesterle plus a 3rd round pick and a contract that doesn't hurt them. Hossa has 3 years left with a cap hit of $5.3MM but his salary is only $1MM each year and is 80% insured. So, they pay him $200k for a $5.5MM cap hit. They aren't below the floor now but aren't a cap ceiling team so they can take on dead cap space to add value very easily.

Cool. Thanks.

Yeah, it's a good trade for Arizona. Both Hinostroza and Oesterle could blossom in Arizone with more playing time, or they could be solid NHL players at the bottom of the lineup like they were for Chicago. In either case, they really had nothing to lose here.

Report: Former NHL goalie Ray Emery drowns during outing with friends at Hamilton Harbor, Ontario

:(

Emery, 35, was swimming with friends at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club around 6 a.m. when he didn't resurface. Rescue efforts were switched to a recover as the hours went by

Damn. Who goes swimming at 6am ?

Emery played in Zac Rinaldo's charity hockey game last night in Hamilton.  Lots of NHLers there - Nurse, Domi, Rinaldo, Smith-Pelley, Duclair etc... I wonder if that's the group of friends he was apparently swimming with

Henrique signs with Ducks for five years.
And Calgary signs Elias Lindholm for six years.

Henrique is a good player, who I'm not sure I'd want to be paying a ton to when he's 32, 33 years old, which he'll be at the back end of this deal. Lindholm is only 23, so no age concerns, I'm not sure he's all that great though, I watch a fair bit of Carolina and always found him underwhelming.

pretty terrible contract for Calgary most likely

He will have a chance to shine there though.   He will start out playing with much better talent on his line.
he will? they signed James Neal to play on the top line so most likely to play with Tkachuk and Backlund at this point.

Didn't he play a lot with guys like Skinner, Aho, and Teravainen last year?

Not consistently.   Peters has 15 line combinations for every game.   He never kept lines together long.  Aho and Tevo were about the only long lasting duo and he even broke that up from time to time.

I forgot about the Neal signing.   Yeah, that definitely doesn't help him.
