2019 College football thread - It's 2020, yo. Go to the new thread. (3 Viewers)

I'd say "especially after last night's performance". Nice to see LSU score a lot ... but that second-half Tiger defense was brutal. Locals are chalking it up to "everyone cramping up" and "playing on the road". But I dunno -- not sold on the Tigers as Top-Four team yet. Need to see more dominance.
That's the issue with both Texas and LSU. They both *could* be back. But Bama, Clemson, OU, OSU, and UGA have track records over the last 4-5 years with no reason to think they won't be in the hunt at the end of this year.

Brutal.  Tibia/fibia?  Hope he's okay now.

I had the ambulance on the field too, but no surgery.  Technically broke both the tibia and fibia but mostly just shattered the rest of the ankle bone(s).  My foot was basically sticking out from my ankle at like a 45 degree angle.  It was a road game and my parents weren't there, they gave verbal approval to the docs over the phone to sedate me with painkillers as soon as I got to the hospital.  When they got to the hospital and gave approval like an hour later, apparently the docs broke my ankle back into place.  Just snapped it.  My mom said it was the most gruesome thing she's ever seen, you could hear the snap.  Apparently I sat up in the hospital bed and screamed bloody murder for like 15 seconds before falling back asleep.  I don't remember it.  One of our assistant coaches went to the hospital with me since my parents weren't there, he literally fainted as they did it and had to be monitored afterwards.  I woke up in a cast almost up to my hip.  Took me like 9 months to recover, counting PT and all that.  Awful.
That sounds like a brutal injury! Any lasting effects from that?

My boy broke the tib/fib but really came out of it pretty good. His injury happened at the end of October and he actually made it back for the end of basketball at the end of February. His second game back in basketball he dove for a loose ball and dislocated his thumb. A rough senior year but he’s walking today, so we are blessed!

Apparently, the AP voters disagree with me. One road win and all of the sudden LSU is better than OU and OSU.

I’ll live the rest of my life not understand why people complain about polls when there is a committee to decide the playoff.
Look at this f'n guy. Talks all day about nonsense on a fantasy football message board and wonders why other people talk about nonsense on a fantasy football message board.

It doesn’t really matter anymore but I get it, at least for those teams on the bottom end of the top 25. I can remember thinking that my team deserved to get ranked, and then being excited actually seeing some national recognition by getting into the poll. It doesn’t mean much to the big names, but I’m pretty sure it means a lot to Maryland and UVA fans to be ranked.

Question for the house: is that game substantially different played in Baton Rouge? What did LSU accomplish last night? How tough of an out is Texas in Austin?

10-15 years ago, this was an easier series of questions to answer.
Not sure where you're going with  it, but road games in general are tough no mater what.  Road games against a top 10 team who happens to be one of the major programs in the country is huge.

ETA: Saw your other responses after.  Makes sense.  I don't think LSU is in that Clemson/Bama/Georgia tier right now.

The win was great. The defensive performance, for LSU, was concerning. That’s all.

I ran across an OSU fan triggered online because LSU jumped them in the polls.   Aside from the fact that it's a poll in EARLY SEPTEMBER, the fact that LSU beating Texas on the road >>>> whipping Cincy at home.

Naturally, the Bucknut homer went to whataboutism - Alabama should've dropped too!

His concern with the integrity of the polls makes sense. LSU was ranked ahead of UT--and was a 6.5 point favorite. OSU was ranked ahead of LSU. So LSU's and OSU's results were already factored into their poll positions. Why should LSU doing what it was expected to do and OSU doing what it was expected to do make a difference in their respective rankings?

I’m sure that only Buckeye homers react that way because only the Buckeyes have irrational fans.

As long as tanking huge leads late in the game still causes a team to drop in the polls, I'm good.

Wonder what kind of ripple effect this is going to cause if it actually makes it to law.  Would it be the beginning of the end of the NCAA in its current capacity?
We can only hope.  I can remember when you could only see one or two college football games a week before the NCAA was sued and lost.  Now we get to see tons of college football games and it has only made college football bigger.

My only concerns is the haves and the have nots.   Big time schools could pay their players more, or certain parts of the country maybe able to entice players more with endorsement money.  Nike = Oregon.      It could get as crazy as a wealthy fan paying a player for posters or meet and greets.    Rhett Bomar left OU after finding out he was being paid for work he never did so it can be a very slippery slope.

The bigger schools are already paying the best players, you just don’t know about it.

So what was the plan vs ULM?

@tashanreed: #FSU edge LB Leonard Warner III on Virginia QB Bryce Perkins: "Obviously he's a pretty good runner, but I don't think we're going to have too much trouble with him... I think we got a pretty good plan for controlling him."

I'm also of the opinion that making all those payments/considerations above board and public could reduce the instances of buying players. It's one thing for a booster to give a $100K no show job to a recruit's mom and the only ones who know about it are your other buddies in the booster club who you are bragging to. But if you're the CEO of a large company where your reputation matters across the country, do you want to be known as the guy who funded the $50K payment for LSU's backup safety?

Either way, I don't see any real change to power within college football from any of these changes. The haves will still be the haves and everyone else will be playing catch up. But at least in this scenario the right people are being rewarded instead of just pouring millions into coaches and facilities all because it's "non profit".

The punt was very nearly blocked....he got clobbered right as he was kicking it, apparently the guy tipped it but the punt got off.  Regardless, the punter basically followed through right into the attempted blocker, kicking leg like snapped in half on the follow-through as he got wrecked.
He had surgery afterward and was released from the hospital to return back to Buffalo yesterday.

Classy move from James Franklin to show up at the hospital with his daughter and some Penn State players to wish him well.

SOURCE: #FSU is hiring Jim Leavitt as an analyst. He is expected to help DC Harlon Barnett by bringing another experienced voice in the def. staff room to aid w/ game-planning. Leavitt was Willie Taggart’s DC when he took an Oregon D that ranked No. 115 and improved it to No. 32.

Weird, was just asking a USF diehard about him today...said he was on ‘time out’ for something at Oregon.

My “insider” said last week Barnett was gone after the Virginia game and Leavitt was going to get the job. Seems to be pretty spot on.

Great spot for both sides it seems.
