2021-22 NBA Thread: Bill Simmons furiously recording 2.5 hour long pod about how Boston is still better than Golden State (2 Viewers)

I'm so glad the TNT crew #### on it as much as they did last night. Not sure what some of these guys were even in it. Why Wasn't Lavine in it (I think Ray Allen mentioned a dunk by Green and said if Lavine did that dunk it's a not as good because he can do better). Judges seemed annoyed by the missed attempts too. Maybe a better pt system and maybe make teams.

For example and I know some of these guys aren't dunkers so bear with me here

Cole Anthony And Jalen Suggs

Lavine and Derrick Jones JR

Toppin and KD

Again not all dunkers but it's to make a point here. Have them work in teams each guy take a round and you combine the scores at the end. Final dunk you put your best dunker vs the other groups best dunker with the highest score. Winner of that is crowned champ
LaVine just had his knee drained and a cortisone shot. No way should he be practicing and participating in a dunk contest.

Either way like most all star weekends and comps it's all a joke these days. I enjoyed the Celeb game to an extent as they made it interesting but the court side girl with the desk all weekend was cringe worthy with that voice.

Rising Stars comp was pretty good.

Would love to see more implemented in the skills comp.

I like how they try and change up the 3 PT competitive

Dunk Contest the last 4-5 yrs is a snooze fest.

Won't even watch the joke known as the ASG and I'm working during it anyway.

I wish we could just do a full weekend of skill games. Rookies, Sophomores and then the vets teams. 3 day contest whoever wins gets a trophy and money to donate to a charity of their choosing among other fun community stuff. Know some fans like the game itself but I find it a snooze fest and more for drama kings like Lebron and others to say hey look at me more.

They announced the contestants well before that. My point was we need a few legit guys back in this thing. I'm cool with the league wanting to show off newer names but can we get a veteran or two in there?

In the rising stars games, they played to a score (first to 50) instead of a clock.

Wouldn’t that be better for the game overall? Play first to 120. They could still have a shot clock and quarters (first to 30). Every game would end on a game winning shot and it would mostly eliminate the intentional fouling/free throws at the end as well as dribbling out a clock.
The Elam Ending. Made popular in the basketball tournament and other settings. I agree it’s great but we are used to games being decided by a clock. I like it though. If the nba ever does their euro style tournament they have been talking about I bet they end the games like this.

It’s come down to guys who will actually agree to do it.  This wasn’t the NBAs chosen guys…it’s just the ones who want to do it. It’s become en vogue to decline these things to more or less show they are above it and want to let some other guys win.

These guys would rather sit in the stands with all their fashion and diamonds on with the crowd and other stars ogling.  Like when you were on the High School Varsity team but you’d go sit and watch the Sophomores play while the young cheerleaders point and whisper.

Of course they’d love to have Steph Curry in the 3 pt shootout and Ja Morant in the Dunk Contest. They just say No to the invite. They have nothing to gain from participating…all that could happen is they have an off night and then the world starts questioning if other guys are actually just as good.

I mentioned it earlier, but go find vids of Dunk League.   They do it right.

There competition is a multitude of different rounds and stages to advance..

- Lightning round of a minute....get in as many good dunks as you can in that timeframe

- The assist...Need to do a dunk with someone assisting you (throwing it to you, jumping over them, etc)

- Lower the hoop to 9 ft  (this one gets crazy)

- Keep raising the hoop to see who can flush one at the highest point

- Mimic a past memorable NBA dunk but put a modern spin/addition on it

These guys are out there doing Scorpions, Double through the legs, 2 elbows inside the rim...just ridiculousness.

Not true.  Go check out Dunk League or Jordan Kilganon & Isaiah Rivera.   There are new ideas and possibilities….the NBA guys just can’t do them.
I’m sure they can, they just have to actually work on like, their basketball game and stuff. Not a sideshow.

Oh come on, like these guys that can jump like that aren’t practicing cool dunks. They do them all the time in warmups. And they signed up for a competition that ultimately could take their star level and endorsement level through the roof if they show out.  Watch some vids of these Dunk League guys and put a couple days of practice in before the event.   If they could do it, they would.

That dunk contest was indeed horrific.  The dunks weren't that bad but my biggest complaint is the lack of flow.  They ruin all momentum and energy in the crowd by trying to attempt a dunk 50 times.  I forget what the rules were like during the Dunk Contest glory days but I don't remember this being a factor.

Right off the bat watching Cole Anthony take 8 minutes to put on boots and then proceed to miss 4 tries in a row was awful.

That one made me cringe.  It got even worse with each miss.

This contest really was a tough watch.  Cool NFT necklace my guy.

Yeah but did they ask these guys and they declined? I'm not up to date on all my NBA who they asked and who they didn't and who did decline so I'm generally asking did Steph even get an invite. Even if not Steph surrely Seth could've been asked.

I've only watched some of Kilagon's stuff after wondering who the hell the guts motions and stuff in NBA2K were so I was aware of his stuff. Didn't realize he was in a league for this. Either way I doubt these guys in The NBA would agree to this. They care more about doing the bare minim to stay healthy and get their money now. the like of Nique/MJ/Dr J etc would be all about this as those guys were competitive driven. I mean we're talking about players of a league who wouldn't want to show up their friends and play together rather than finding out who the best player is 1 on 1 or teams wise.

The idea is cool and all but today's league environment I don't think goes for it unless you put some incentives in for them

That was pretty cool!  Loved seeing those legendary big men on my TV.  Man, I adore Bill Walton.

Shocked they allowed Bill Walton on. Was thinking they'd be too afraid of him making The NBA look bad like he did when he called out the league for fixing games before the Donaghey incident was a thing yrs prior.

Of course they asked the best of the best…why wouldn’t they? The more star power the better. They don’t make it public anymore who declines like they used to in the past (no upside to it PR wise)

Klutch not happy with Rob Pelinka after he refuses to trade Russ and a 1st (27 most likely) for Klutch client John Wall

Like the initial comment says not sure how this is legal anymore. Literally Rich Paul agency is Lebron's and only reason Paul has a job is because of Lebron. A lot of players and other agents are not happy with Klutch after the Simmons fiasco and the crap they pulled especially with mental illness. If James Ditched Paul tomorrow most of clutch clients would be gone by the end of the year. Most are only there because of the star power Lebron brings to the brand similar to why certain players team with certain shoe brands and other merchandise and promotions. Also Lebron is running the agency the minute he retires watch.

Walton never "called out the league for fixing games."  He complained about the officiating in the 2002 Kings-Lakers series like pretty much everyone.

First time I've watched the All Star game in this new format.

Not sure I understand it really.

Seemed like the typical no defense shootaround it's been for a long time.

Curry shooting lights out was nice to see.

Plus seeing all the OG legends at halftime.  Got me teary-eyed

It is?  Pretty corny I think.

Make it East vs West and maybe go the MLB route and play for home court in the finals.
I don't think I've disagreed more with a take on here in a long time.

The home court thing is total bull####. Half or more of the guys there aren't playing in the finals and have no shot. The end of the game was intense (guys were literally faceguarding and doubling Curry at half court) because they've finally found a way to make the game within reach at the end AND the teams are fairly even and driven by a schoolyard pick.

Very few things motivate someone as much as not getting picked high enough. I've seen it at every level of the sport. A friend takes a friend and it pisses a guy off who thinks he's better, or a friend takes another guy and it pisses the friend off, etc. etc.

Reward the team with the best record for sure and don't try to shoehorn it into the ASG. One of the worst decisions MLB made (and we made arguments against it when I worked there).

I turned it off well before the 4th quarter, and I actually watched the entire dunk contest.

I actually don't like what MLB did either, I just don't know how you incentivize anything.

Interesting. The 4th quarter is the part worth watching. I'd suggest trying not watching it the first half or 3 quarters, then turning it on!

The 4th quarter is the time when the best players in the NBA are trying to prove something, the intensity was noticeably higher, and they clearly wanted to win. It was awesome, and has been each year.

Sounds like being 25% satisfied is the best case scenario

That 4th qtr was great and Steph's barrage in the 3rd was fun too.  Giannis was running the floor and he and Jarret Allen were going after blocks like it was a Finals game at the end.  My favorite was Giannis' chase down on Middleton.  LeBron's game winner was pretty sweet as well.

I turned it on during the 75 greatest players announcements and pretty much enjoyed all of it that I watched.  The only other thing I caught was the 3-pt contest and I liked that as well.

For a pointless exhibition, I thought it was well done.

Yeah I mean it's a totally pointless exhibition game purely for entertainment value where the #1 most important thing is that none of the stars get hurt. It's not like any of the other all-star games are any different? At least this one has 25% that is pretty thrilling.

"Contest created to entertain children greatly disappoints old men"

After watching that joke of a performance, I showed my daughter some Wilkins and Jordan contests so she could see what the Slam Dunk competition used to be about.
Good for you.
I turned off the horrible contest Saturday night and watched a replay of the ‘85 contest in Indianapolis. I was there. It was great. Just dunks from Jordan, Wilkins, Dr J, etc. no stupid props like putting on boots and jumping over people.

Highlight of All star weekend = MJ 👍

Players (young/old) are still in total awe of him.

I'd prefer to see an NBA alum game more than anything else they show TBH. Midseason tourney with current players would be better as well. They've got to do away with current setup. It's dated and boring

Winning team gets a bonus plus free Chic FIL A for a year!!!!!

In all seriousness proud to say I didn't watch an dam second of the all star game. Only watched the half time stuff for the legends. NBA game is a joke with no one trying. They could maybe have a bonus plus each team plays for a charity. Winning team gets X amount for charity they chose while losers get a lesser amount and lesser bonus.

I mean make it something so we see some dam defense in the game. Maybe have USA vs the World or something.

Ot just feeds players egos nothing entertaining about it at all.
I mean we can agree to disagree. I find it awesome to see who the best players want to play with. There's something insightful about when folks like message board posters love or hate Harden and get opinionated and then when the best players in the world are choosing who to play with he's at the bottom of the list every time. Then people wonder why his teams lose in the playoffs every year. (I mean, maybe Embiid can carry him since Harden's not the best player on the team, but let's be real...Philly's title chances went down, not up, with that trade. I'd have gone 1:1 for McCollum and got to keep Seth and be in a better spot).

Guys played defense in the 4th quarter.

Each team does play for charity and there is a bonus.

Like what you just suggested is literally what they do already. It kinda sounds like you don't really like basketball and just want to complain. :2cents:

ETA: They also donated like $1900/assist to charities of their choice this year IIRC

All star games anymore are just popularity contests. Theres always guys in every league who get shafted because people voted for a player who's going off just their name recognition at that point. I get honoring a retiring player who's last season it is to an extent but I find that hard justifying if they didn't really deserve the all star vote either. It's why I hate using all star games as a measuring stick of how good players are.

Arent most? Many NFL fans suggested doing away with all star game and just do a skills competition tournament or something. I'd also enjoy some sort of possible flag football celeb with alumni game like they use to have

An alumni game in The NBA would be more competitive then numerious games today though.

Just do skills competitions and have some kind of 3 on 3 or whatever games. Alumni 3 pt competition sounds fun too.
