2021-22 NBA Thread: Bill Simmons furiously recording 2.5 hour long pod about how Boston is still better than Golden State (2 Viewers)

I mean we can agree to disagree. I find it awesome to see who the best players want to play with. There's something insightful about when folks like message board posters love or hate Harden and get opinionated and then when the best players in the world are choosing who to play with he's at the bottom of the list every time. Then people wonder why his teams lose in the playoffs every year. (I mean, maybe Embiid can carry him since Harden's not the best player on the team, but let's be real...Philly's title chances went down, not up, with that trade. I'd have gone 1:1 for McCollum and got to keep Seth and be in a better spot).

I just feel like if you want to prove to be the best you shouldn't want to play with your friends. One of the reasons I liked MJ's era and why I thought the Dream team was more special. Most of those guys hated one another but came together for a good cause but non of them wanted to team up to become a super team. Just me vs you with out teams and may the best team win. I just think its kind of cheap to have the best players all on the same teams and it waters down the league so much that regular season hardly means a dam anymore. I think most of today's players are babies. There's stuff that has made the game better but I think today's league is full of cry babies and guys who don't want to put in the grind to win. Want the easy way out for a title and team with their buddies.

I'd rather see Lebron and KD going against each other not team up.

I've been saying awhile also I think Harden is incredible overrate and I think Russ is too. Russ hasn't got out of the 1st round of a playoff series since KD left and managers to regular season stat pad. Harden hasn't taken over a game and had a playoff moment in a decade. He's older and getting more injured, looks like he could care less about being in shape. Saw a tweet that said after the trade that a former teammate of Hardens told someone if Harden manages to get in the HoF he's going to have a hard time finding a former teammate to induct him if he wanted one too. That says a lot about a guy IMHO plus always being picked last? KD wanted nothing to do with him on his team. I know some people it seems like the cool thing to do is hate KD but I've heard great things about him as a teammate and such.

Guys played defense in the 4th quarter.

Each team does play for charity and there is a bonus.

Like what you just suggested is literally what they do already. It kinda sounds like you don't really like basketball and just want to complain. :2cents:

ETA: They also donated like $1900/assist to charities of their choice this year IIRC

I want to watch guys play not half ### it for 3 QtRs. Maybee they should make it a higher incentive. If they are that worried about getting hurt maybe they should opt out but then again that would really hurt a lot of these guys egos.

I like watching basketball but outside of CHI I can't bother watching The NBA anymore. I prefer college and Olympics and even Euro hoops because it's similar to the olympics and more of a team concept. Not this AND1 BS and hey look at me.

Nba and nfl all star games are done for ratings and to promote the game to the younger base of fans. A skills competition is unwatchable crap and that’s why neither league has dumped the game for that format.

People watch -> advertisers pay -> network pays league -> leagues make money. Nobody cares about defense or the integrity of all star games. Bottom line.

Didn't they do that for a few years?

For the Rising Stars game they did. NHL had America vs Europe for awhile before going east vs West. If I'm not mistaken The NBA all star game was always East/West. Maybe they did have a year or 2 where it was USA vs The World but this was when the US was total domination player wise and I think they scraped the idea

This is so out of touch it kind of makes me laugh now. I'll see myself out.

Guys played back then because you needed an ASG to raise your profile because even the playoffs were tape delayed. The ASG and showing out was one of the few options for building a brand. It was worth some risk to get hurt. Now, they have plenty of other options to build one, including every single game being televised and the internet for highlights.

Agreed.  The current format is probably as good as you'll get for an ASG.  I don't mind them messing around for the first three quarters as long as we get a somewhat competitive 4th.

I don’t personally pay much attention to the game - only watched some of the 4th last night - but I’ll never get why people want to make this thing more than it needs to be.

I definitely get it.

Haven't watched one for at least a decade.

The 75 @ halftime and Curry's play was cool

This event brought a ton of money to the city during a time of year nothing is usually going on. I didn't watch a second of any of it, but I am not their targer market.

Hasn't this been the case for like 30 years?

Apparently Zion has not spoken with or even texted a "welcome to the team" message to CJ McCollum.  And his name was not mentioned in an email sent out to season ticket holders for next year, per JJ Redick.

I'd rather my guys build their brand on the court then playing to make themselves popular on social media. I know I wasn't the only one and I'm a big Joel Embiid fan despite what some people think. I always brought up how he seemed more concerned about his popularity on socials then he did with physically getting better and he was not at a point in his career to be making any claims or trying "pwn" anyone as the kids today call it. Joel has learned to deal with that.

However if I'm a scout/coach team and my player is more concerned about their social media life then playing maybe they aren't dedicated enough to play.

Highlights also don't show an entire body of work of a player. They just show what he does good. You can't really get a good idea on a player without watching them constantly. I've said this numerious times about college players especially Ben Simmons who were touted as the next big things. I think most fans don't even watch games of college players. I'll watch more college football then College basketball but only because at this time of year I don't have the opportunity as much to watch games and theres more D1 colleges in basketball then Football.

Either way you could clearly tell who actually watched the kids in college and who just watched highlights reels parts of the game or the sports center highlights. This goes for a lot of sports. I was talking to someone in the PHI Union org awhile back who works with the scouting department for the club. I've also asked this question to a commentator named Matteo Bonetti on his Patreon. The short Version:

A lot of scouts and people hate when fans/media just show a guys highlight reel in soccer. it doesn't give you the whole story. They mentioned using a site called who scout that is a paywall site but its what a lot of managers and players in Fifa use to scout clubs and players. it doesn't just give you highlights but you can break it down to tell it to show me Lionel Messi's touches throughout the last match

Either way watching whole games of players is much better to judge then a highlight reel. Highlights might gauge someone's interest but if you are just using highlights to gauge how good a player is you aren't using it the way It should be.

Because a lot of people love to overrate the actual game and act like these guys are so amazing. My produce manager was literally in all of how "dominate" Joel Embiid was most of the game and how Curry took like some ridiculous number of 3s. I get it the game is catered around the casuals more then the people who like to watch the serious game but people need to learn the difference from an exhibition to an actual game.I saw a few highlights just scrolling down my social pages and most of the highlights have guys backing away for the dude to shoot or to put on some fancy dunk.

Also when people use the game as a way to get their guy more clout like some achievement when it's just a popularity contest. Thats where some of us are annoyed by this. I don't mind a skills competition/alumni game etc. Just to me the actual game itself is boring. When I was under 10 yeah it was fun now over 2 decades later I find it boring and useless.

Sounds like our next Ben Simmons 2.0 kerfuffle is going on. I know NO isn't happy about Zion's lack of uh hem physical fitness (to say this as nicely as possible) and it doesn't seem like he cares either. Read a story awhile back his set backs for his injury could be a cause of him putting on more weight too.

Starting to become another over hyped drama filled baby in the league. There really should be no excuse in todays day and age of technology and opportunity to not be in physical shape to start a season. it shows pure selfishness and laziness IMHO.

Also I know it's easy today to go after Rich Paul and Ben Simmons for how they acted but Lebron James seems to be getting a pass for simple not doing something or making a statement about Paul faking Simmons having a mental illness. I just think that says a lot about James as a person right there. If Paul was my agent Id have fired him for those antics.

Wow, what a bust for Nola.  Not Greg Oden but pretty close in terms of output.  And they passed on a generational talent much like Durant in Ja.

Zion's a monster when he's on the court....but injuries matter and can define your legacy. He should look to Luka for some inspiration. Just read some articles where Cuban said some of the comments about Luka's weight coming into the season really fired him up to lose some lbs. Was 260 coming into the season and is currently down to 245.

Jokic as well last season.

Hell yeah. That said, starting to grow concerned about what is going on with ANT lately.  He’s been ungood.
What was the reason ANT didn't participate much in the All Star weekend games?   I just saw that Rookie/Soph game that he basically sat out the 2nd half on the bench in his warmups.

Seems like he needs a few games off to rest his knees and body, overall. He's missed what, two games in his career and played heavy minutes from day 1 - that's a lot coming out of college and it's 25-30 game schedule. And I know he's mentioned some knee pain lately. At least I hope he just needs a little bit of rest.

That being said, it's nice to see them keep winning with him playing so poorly. Hopefully all three will start clicking by the playoffs.

Hell of a lineup the Nets ran out there.
Hey, Boston can only play whoever the other team rolls out there.

On a side note, there is still a lot of hype around Brooklyn, but they aren't going to have much time to try and get it together.  Not that they don't have supreme talent but that many key pieces trying to suddenly mesh into a Championship contender is going to be a chore.  Not sure they can pull it off and even get to the ECF, much less the Finals.

got no hope machine going for the Green - just enjoying what they doin'. dont think the Jays will ever be count-on-able, but the team is back where it was pre-Kyrie as far as making passing lanes needledick narrow. Derrick White - whose shot mechanics are way worse than i thought - is still helping them hugely as far as beating the zone, and doing it without being ball-dominant. hopefully this will shorten the Jays drive paths and bring back some side2side work. and, though i fear he will never be able to ultimately refine his game, Timelord controlsas much cubic footage above the rim as anyone i ever seen.

my only hope is for Brooklyn to draw Toronto, so Kancerie gets aced out da playoffs. go karma!

Yeah, I like where they are going and enjoy their brand of basketball again.

It will be more enjoyable to watch them in the playoffs like this and they could be a tough out in round 1 & 2.  Got to keep the starting 5 healthy or they go back to being a .500 team that lives and dies by Tatum's shooting % on any given night.

they also gotta keep Tatum's toddler from coming to home games. between winning their last five games on the road by the greatest different ever (sumn like 140 points) they lost @ home to the frikkin Pistons cuz Maaaacus Smaaaat was out and that elongated Jayson's "look at daddy" drivepath by a factor of two. As long as they can keep the Jays from making moves with more than one level (Brown's presidentially small hands make that a no-go for his handle) there's no one - cept maybe Kobe Harden & Shaquille Embiid - they cant beat.

I could see them 1 and done in the playoffs just because of the poor chemistry and they run it back with that same team with a few tweaks with that excuse

Sixers looked good last night. Harden out there really unlocks Maxey.

They still need a backup for Joel. And someone better to lead the second unit. Not sure that always having two of Embiid, Harden, Maxey, Harris amd staggering them some is the answer.
