2021 Buffalo Bills - Same as it ever was*** (7 Viewers)

I'm rolling with Tyrod this week and feeling pretty good about it if Watkins is back.

Harvin still up in the air? What was the weird comments about it wasn't his hip but he didn't go to London due to personal reasons? Is that some silly CYA to prevent him from quitting when healthy? I don't get it.

There are rumors that he could retire- the Bills would recoup some of his signing bonus if he retires while "healthy".

Crazy thought of the day:

Toss SF a 4th or 3rd round pick for Kap, dependent on Kap signing a new 2 year deal for reasonable money. Sell it to him as a reunion with Greg Roman, who can help him resurrect his career. Make him Tyrod's backup.

I know it's wishful thinking, but you have to think the 49ers would be interested. Not so sure about Kap or the Bills.

ETA: even better, offer a 6th rounder and EJ Manuel. If the 49ers were willing to give Gabbert a try, they sure as hell will be interested in Manuel.

The Bills desperately need a new training staff. Watkins is going to play this week but be "limited."

What the heck is the point of that? Watkins has been gimpy all season because they keep rushing him back with injuries that are very easy to re-injure and he keeps getting hurt. Why put a guy out there that isn't able to help much anyway instead of letting him rest up and get 100% with less risk of re-injury?

So stupid

Well, on the one hand I look stupid with the game Sammy had. On the other hand, he DID get hurt again at the end of the game...

I'll tell you what though, Whaley has hit a ton of homeruns. Karlos Williams and Ronald Darby are absolute studs. Tyrod looks better and better all the time.

The Bills are the first team in NFL history to have 2 players rush for over 100+ yards and a player have over 150 yards receiving in the same game.

Tyrod Taylor is also on pace to break Drew Brees's record for completion percentage in a season.

Not really much to complain about. Pretty complete game all around yesterday. Running game was superb, Tyrod was very efficient, Sammy looked like a superstar. Defense looked they were about to break at times, but made some big plays when it mattered, namely the 2 Hughes sacks and the goalline stand at the end of the half. Tannehill put up decent numbers in the passing game but no touchdowns is a win for the defense. They did get the benefit of some weak Miami coaching (no timeout at the end lf the half?) and apparently a missed hold on Suh on the Watkins TD, but that's the NFL for you. The Bills were burned on that Robey DPI against Jacksonville, and bad calls - or bad non-calls - go both ways.

I was very frustrated by the play of the defense, but you're right that they were able to come up with plays when they had to and they did succeed in allowing less scoring than it seemed like they were going to. They still had a tough time getting off the field and allowed too many long drives. But again, the result was fine.

Everybody should make a special point to remember the lack of a holding penalty on Suh. That was an atrocious non-call that should have wiped out a then-critical TD. It's good to remind ourselves of things like that when we're on the receiving end, as we have been for a couple of weeks.

The defense and lack of discipline are still major concerns IMO. 13 freaking penalties again yesterday (which doesn't include the huge one that should have been on Suh), with 7 of them resulting in a 1st down. Rex needs to turn things around quickly before it's another lost season.

At one point Landry only had 8 for 39 - so while they kept hitting on those mis-directions and RB flat plays - they held when it mattered. They will have to shore up the LB situation/tackling. I liked McKelvin moving all around the secondary as Graham hasn't been the best. More stupid penalties as well.

Felton playing 50+ percent of the snaps was huge in getting the run game going.

McCoy has an MRI today and per Dr. Gene here, he thinks it's an AC sprain like Sanders/Cobb had earlier.

Sammy and the backs looked great. Hopefully we can get and stay healthy.

I'll be at the game Thursday. Looking forward to MetLife.

From PFF re: LBs:

– As promising as the performance of the offensive line might be, the linebackers are a huge concern. Over the season, Nigel Bradham, Preston Brown, and Manny Lawson have a combined -35.1 grade. Bradham is ranked 33rd of 34 qualifying 4-3 OLBs, while Brown is 51st of 55 amongst ILBs. Both played poorly against Miami. Brown (-3.9) struggled in coverage, allowing all five targets to be complete for 65 yards. He struggled against the aforementioned screens, in particular, and finished with three missed tackles. Bradham (-2.6) had a tough time in run defense, especially, often finding himself sealed by offensive lineman at the second level.

Thought of that yesterday. With who he rolled out vs Miami both games.
My favorite thing about the whole Ik/Geno punched over $600 in air fare story was learning it was not nearly as strange as the fight he got into in college (punched a guy who catfished him, Ik thought he was getting some from a "girl" he met on the internet.) But the college punch, in which he injured his hand, didn't cost him any playing time. He was already suspended from the team for punching a bouncer six months before.

Well a few weeks ago Sammy was all up in arms that Rex was making him looking bad, and making himself look bad, so if the HC would just make sure he got 15-20 targets a game like Julio or Dez, he'd make everybody look good. This kind of attitude doesn't exactly make Watkins stand out, there's a long list of prima donna star WRs. He played like the superstar he is yesterday. Just like the first time around in Miami, everybody was getting in on the fun.

Super efficient game for TT. Great to see he hasn't lost his mobility or running ability.

What to make of this defense? They were so good a year ago. I've read the articles about the scheme being the issue but they laid off on having DL drop into coverage. Almost 400 yards allowed yesterday, 4.6 YPC and 7.5 YPA vs. the pass.

Tough schedule coming up; this is going to be something special if they overcome all these road games and snag a playoff spot. I think they have plenty of talent to end the drought this year.

  • Thu, Nov 12 @ Jets 8:25 PM
  • Mon, Nov 23 @ Patriots 8:30 PM
  • Sun, Nov 29 @ Chiefs 1:00 PM
  • Sun, Dec 6 vs Texans 1:00 PM
  • Sun, Dec 13 @ Eagles 1:00 PM
  • Sun, Dec 20 @ Redskins
They're 4-4. No such thing as an easy week in the NFL, but they should beat the Chiefs, Texans and Redskins. Nobody expects them to beat the Pats. This is a winnable game in MetLife Thursday.

If they're 8-6 after this stretch they can close it out in style at home versus the Cowgirls and the Jets. That last game might be for the #5/6 seed or go home.

I can't get over how the passing game unfolded this past game. Sammy complains about not getting enough targets (which we've all been saying since week 1) and what happens?

Targets:

Sammy - 8 (67%)

Rest of team - 4 (33%)

All other WRs - 1

Catches:

Sammy - 8 (73%)

Rest of team - 3 (27%)

All other WRs - 0

Yards:

Sammy - 168 (93%)

Rest of team - 13 (7%)

All other WRs - 0

These percentages make ODB or Julio look severely under targeted.

Let's hope it keeps up... There's no reason this team should miss out on a wild card spot given the current standings.

So I was running on the treadmill at the gym earlier this morning, and I saw ESPN cut away to Rex's press conference, where for some reason he was wearing a Clemson helmet. The sound was off so I have no idea what that was all about, but I can't recall ever seeing a coach wear a helmet to a presser. That's a new one.

Hell, the Jets should have named him an honorary captain this week. He's their MVP so far this season.

Homage to Sammy, perhaps?

His son is on the team at Clemson.

Starting to feel oddly like a playoff game tonight. Lose and they're 4-5, 2 games back of the Jets and with a huge gut-punch in the wildcard standings, considering they'll be 4-6 after next week. Win and they pull even with the Jets, 3-1 in the division, and back truly in the thick of things.

I cannot believe they escaped with a win.

After that fumbled punt, did anyone think this was going to be different than every other primetime game in the past 10 years?

After how much of a disaster his preseason was, I can't believe just how good Darby is. He's seriously a stud. He might already be a top 5 CB in the league.

My guess is that Gilmore ends up heading somewhere else in the off season for a bunch of money, but I'm certainly enjoying this duo right now.

Even though it was ugly & got uncomfortable I think this is a pretty solid win. The turnovers look lopsided but 3-1 is more accurate than the official 4-0 given the prayer int at the end & flubbed punt. The possessions to start the 2nd half to get separation and at the end to close the game out are winning drives the Bills basically never make. Won't be easy w/ a 3rd straight road game on a short week but I think we break the drought if we can get the KC game in a couple weeks.

Honestly, I didn't feel like this was an "ugly" win. The Titans game -- that was an ugly win. This was just a hard-fought game against a team with a really good defense that came down to turnovers and a couple of big 4th downs. The Jets are clearly a significantly better team than the Dolphins, and I have no quarrel with winning this sort of game away from home on a short week.

More on Darby: He was targeted 5 times last night. He gave up 1 catch for -2 yards (the play he stuffed Marshall on 4th down on).

It's almost absurd, but there may be a legitimate argument that he has been the best CB in the entire league so far this year.

He was phenomenal again last night. The break on that one throw to Thompkins (I think) where he got there right when the ball arrived and slammed him for the incompletion was fantastic.

Is it a coincidence that the refs didn't call a lot (or any, perhaps?) of secondary penalties, and the Bills CBs were able to stifle Fitz? Refs allowing physical play seems like it plays right into the Bills CB strengths. It seems like Decker had a decent day when working against Robey but Gilmore and Darby completely shut down the outside.

I don't even know who their ST coordinator is, but that guy definitely needs to be replaced next year. They've been terrible covering kicks, have had an unreal number of penalties and just a whole lot of mistakes. No excuse for the holes the ST unit puts them in every game.

Prior to week 1, I was 100% convinced that Darby was going to be a liability. Instead, he's been our best defensive player by a pretty healthy margin and should be a lock for the Pro Bowl if he maintains form.

Deion thinks the CBs are a weakness though. What a blowhard.

If the Pats have to play without Edelman, I think the Bills have a great chance. The biggest thing is going to be minimizing penalties and stupid plays.

If the Bills can somehow pull off a win and ruin the Pats perfect season, in Foxboro, I may have a spontaneous orgasm and mess my jeans.

Keep it under control. Don't let your hopes creep up as this week passes. We all know how this will end...

I'm predicting a 71 yard field goal by Gostkowski after a second onside kick recovery in the last 4 minutes of the game.

I have a rough time with the late games yesterday. Like (presumably) everybody else in this thread, I reflexively root against the Patriots. They could be playing a team sponsored by ISIS and coached by Jimmy Johnson, and I would still root against them. But given that we're playing them next week and have no shot at the division regardless, I was kind of happy to see them get the win against the Giants. I don't expect them to win on Monday night, but in the off chance that they pull off a major upset, it would be nice to break up an undefeated season.

On a similarly self-interested level, I had to force myself to root for Minnesota against Oakland. I live in Viking country, and cruel as it may be, I take a lot of pleasure in seeing the Vikings rip the hearts out of their fans time and time again -- misery loves company I guess. So every time Oakland made a play, I would instinctively cheer a little, and then have that half-second hitch before I remembered "Wait, you actually want the Vikings to win this one." That was a lot of cognitive dissonance to bear during the same 4:00 pm time slot.

It's been pretty quiet in here... We might all be in the same boat - still working on finishing our padded rooms, so they're ready by 11:30 Monday night. Mine's almost done, and I gave my wife a tranquilizer gun, so I think I'll be ready.

We thinking heartbreak ending or outright blowout?

I'm really hoping for the heartbreak, so I can keep hope alive for a wild card first round playoff exit.

I shouldn't say this. If they get in, they can totally beat the AFC West or South champ. That'll be the Colts (say no more) or perhaps Jags, then in the West it'll be Denver or perhaps the Raiders. In the AFC it's all New England and the Bengals. Everyone else is mediocre at best.

I've never been more certain of a heartbreaking loss in my life [which I guess makes it not so heartbreaking].

But I mean we're good when healthy and healthy now and I just don't think NE is much better than the other good teams in their current state. Obviously winning is impossible, I won't believe that's happening even if we're up 16 with 10 seconds left.
