2021 Buffalo Bills - Same as it ever was*** (4 Viewers)

There goes one of my guys Aaron Robinson.

Wish the Bills would have picked him instead of Basham. Kinda curious about that 2nd round pick. I like the player, but the position... Lots-o-questions.
Lotta DEs not under contract next year for Buffalo and it won’t be an easy position to fill in free agency because of the $$$ needed to sign Allen long term. These are more long term picks than right now picks IMO.

Taking Meinerz or Melifonwu in this round would make me happy.

Totally agree. Their current regime of DEs are long in the tooth (sans Epenesa). I don't mind planning for the future, but they also need to add to the starting lineup to take the next step this year.

I love the attention to the OL. But, I really wish it was Meinerz. I think that guy is a future probowler.
I think I’m with you. Brown has some crazy physical tools though. Dude benches 500, squats 600, and runs a 4.87 at 6’8” 311 lbs. Since 1987, out of 1,143 OT prospects, Brown is #1 in Relative Athletic Score.

Also interesting to read that the Bills had a deal in place to trade out of the 2nd round contingent on 1 specific guy not being there because they liked him so much. Basham was still there though so they stayed put and took him. Who knows if it’s the right decision, but at least they got a guy that they really like.

It feels like Beane came into this draft planning to take a particular type of player -- "process guy," under-cooked, boom-bust -- and then went basically BPA from those guys regardless of position.  Given the overall quality of our roster, that makes a lot of sense to me.  Would have been nice to snag a starting CB, though it's not like we didn't need pass rushers and it's not like we aren't thin at OT.

Finally a CB... Rachad Greyturkey, from Wisconsin. He is WAY down the list of best available CBs. I wonder what the team saw in him to pull the trigger.

I have a question for you Bills fans. Is there anything there with Antonio Williams who came in and had a pretty good game week 17 last year? Any chatter at all about him?

50-50 IMO.  He'll enter training camp on the bubble.
He’d have to show a lot IMO. Singletary and Moss are locks. Breida is close to a lock I think. Would they keep 4 RBs on the roster? Seems doubtful to me with what their offense has become. With no changes to their O-line, I don’t see them going more run heavy because the O-linemen they have just aren’t very good run blockers. I think no change to the O-line signals that passing will still be the heavy focus. And if that’s the case, Williams seems like way more of a practice squad guy than roster guy.

And with all the linemen the Bills drafted, I think they’re more likely to keep one extra linemen than an extra RB.

I’m glad the Bills took so many linemen though because they haven’t been very good at evaluating them. Both their drafted guys and FA guys have been average at best for the most part. They’ve had a few hits at OT but D-line has been especially bad for them.

Zack Moss appears to be a massive winner here, no?
Yep.  I expect he'll have every opportunity to earn the lead back role this year.  No guarantees of course, but I think it's his job to lose.  (For fantasy purposes, this comes with the obvious disclaimers about Allen's goal line presence, Singletary getting carries, and so on).

No chatter, but the way the coaches reacted after he scored those two touchdowns makes me think they'll give him a shot this season. I understand why they didn't give him any touches in the playoffs. Between only picking up Breida and not drafting a RB, I think the Bills Brass will give him more looks in training camp, and then we'll go from there. He could be worthy of a late round flyer in deep dynasty leagues.

Massive winner? No. But not a loser. The Bills could go 50/50 again, which I doubt. I think they'll switch it up, and by the end of the year it'll be closer to 70/30 Moss over Singletary/Breida. Hell, maybe even throw AW into the mix as well...  I believe that Singletary/Breida/AW will be fighting for the "2" spot in the bills backfield.

The Bills picked up the fifth year option on both Allen and Edmunds.  Allen was a total no-brainer of course and hopefully they'll get his extension done sooner rather than later -- he's not going to get any cheaper over time.  Edmunds has developed slower than I would have liked, but giving him a fifth year makes a lot of sense to see if he ever gets over the hump or not.

Yeah, I’m not sure Edmunds has earned that money yet, but he’s so young it makes sense to do the extension and give him one more year before deciding. Heck, he is entering his 4th season and is younger than 4 of the guys drafted by the Bills this season. But he needs to make a big jump this year or the Bills will need to look elsewhere after this season.

Yep.  Between guys like Allen, Edmunds, Knox, and essentially everybody we just drafted over the weekend, Beane obviously likes drafting developmental-type guys.  Allen obviously worked out great.  Knox is heading into a make-or-break year where he's going to find himself replaced if he doesn't improve his play in 2021.  Edmunds has been pretty good, but not good enough to justify top-end LB money.  Perfect example of why having the fifth year option available is helpful for all parties.

I don't know... He was getting burned all year in coverage. Out of position in the run game. If he can correct those things, he's gonna be a monster. If....

5th year is one thing for Edmunds, but we'll see about a 2nd contract... Might be better off picking someone up in the 1st round in the 2023 draft.

My son is already lobbying for a Thanksgiving trip to New Orleans.  Chip off the old block . . .
Night before Thanksgiving is biggest drinking night of the year. How many Bills fans travel to NO and never even make it to the game?

Also, love that the Bills then get 11 days off before playing the Pats at home on MNF. Bills finally getting some schedule love

Got my hotel room booked for New Orleans.  It wasn't really all that bad -- about $140 a night for the Holiday Inn Express, which is pretty reasonable for a decent-ish hotel within walking distance to the stadium on a game day long weekend.  I'm pretty sure I paid twice that amount for a similar room the last time I went to see the Bills when they played the Vikings.  (It was worth it just for "the hurdle.")

Tickets are definitely on the pricey side, but it's Thanksgiving and I didn't expect that they would be laying there in the bargain bin.  I haven't purchased anything yet, but right now they seem to start around $250 or so for upper deck seating.  I'll hold off a little to see if they come down at all, but if they stay there that's fine.  We don't care where we sit so it's no big rush.

Airline tickets are actually kind of ridiculous, but again, it's Thanksgiving.  I'll definitely hold off on booking any flights until later in the summer.

This should be a lot of fun.  My son is arguing for watching the Detroit and Dallas games in a sports bars with fellow fans before walking over to the stadium, which sounds good to me.  But oh man there are going to be some incredibly intoxicated people -- nearly all of them wearing blue and red -- heading to the stadium.  Gotta make a note to stick to beer and pace myself.

Edit: Now my wife and daughter (<21) have decided they want to come along, too, and the same room at the same hotel is about half again as much as it was 24 hours ago.  Oh well -- at least I got one crazy cheap room, and honestly $200/night is kind of what I really expected to pay in the first place.  I just got lucky and booked the first room before they had a chance to adjust their rates to "game day" rates.

Ok, I was just going to say that I wouldn't worry too much about a hotel close to the stadium unless you are only going there for 1 night. The city is very easy to get around on the street cars. We usually stay in the garden district as it is a little more quiet and spacious, but still plenty of bars/restaurants scattered throughout for breakfast/lunch/hanging out. There's some decent stuff to walk around and see, too. You could walk through a cemetery, which is kind of cool and different from what most of us are used to. We'd usually head down to the French Quarter in the afternoon/evening. You can get to the vast majority of the attractions without a rental car as long as you are close to a street car line.

Your agenda sounds good. I'd recommend hitting up Cafe Du Monde (expect a line) for some breakfast beignet, then peruse the French Market and Jackson Square area, then Central Grocery for a muffuletta for lunch on one of your days, if those things sound up your alley and you want to knock out some of the stuff you often see on TV.

I've never really done much of the "tour" stuff. A swamp tour could likely be cool, but I've heard the ghost tours and stuff like that are more on the cheesy side.

I also wouldn't be too worried about it being "busy" for a regular season game. The city is all about tourism, and I would imagine a Saints game would be a barely noticeable uptick. (Unless there are other events in town that weekend, as well.)

The Bills need to shut down the vaccine talk now and not make this an issue. It seems like management is trying to get players to be vaccinated. All around the league there are going to be players who don’t get it. The last thing they need is to take a strong stance and introduce something that will cause division.

I agree that they’d be smart to stop talking about it externally. But they’re smart to continue to encourage players to get vaccinated. The league is allowing teams with certain vaccination rates to do a lot more things than teams under that rate. I think teams that are able to meet in larger groups, do positional meetings in person versus virtual, etc etc will have an advantage of teams that aren’t allowed to do those things. Encouraging players to get vaccinated isn’t just the right thing to do for public and team health (IMO), it’s the right thing to do to not be at a competitive disadvantage.

Requirements for vaccinated teams versus non-vaccinated teams

The difference is really substantial.

Vaccinated:

No daily testing

No masks at facility

No quarantine after exposure to Covid positive

 No travel restrictions

No capacity limits in weight room

No use of sauna/steam room

May interact with vaccinated friends/family during travel

 Not vaccinated teams:

Subject to daily testing

Masks still required in club facility

Must physical distance

Must quarantine if in contact with Covid positive

Travel restrictions

Capacity limits in weight room

No use of sauna/steam room

No interaction with family/friends while traveling

The biggest negatives for teams themselves is the physical distancing and capacity on weight rooms. Physical distancing will often limit the ability for position groups to all meet in person. And weight room capacity limits could reduce workout times.

Bills freed up a little over $7M in this year’s salary cap by converting just about all of Diggs’s 2021 salary into signing bonus. So the next 2 years take additional $3-4M cap hits each but free the money up this year.

Speculation seems to be it’s about Ertz. I really hope not. I watched a number of Eagles games this year and Ertz is toast. He doesn’t have anything left in the tank IMO. Waste of money.

Could be for the new Josh Allen contract?

The team absolutely has to have the defense step up and be much better because I don’t think we should expect a lot more out of the offense. That’s not meant as a negative or saying that the offense CAN’T be better, but they were really freaking good last year and expecting more is unfair IMO.

But the defense was largely lackluster and has to be better. Guys like Edmunds and Oliver need to earn their high draft picks. Those guys need to not just be good players, but be difference makers. The Bills also badly need some pass rushers to step up and actually start taking down some QBs. Their pressure rate is pretty good, but ultimately you need to take QBs down and put teams in bad downs and distances. And then you need to actually get off of the field instead of letting teams convert 3rd and extremely long over and over.

Agreed 100%.  I've been on Team Allen since before the 2018 draft and obviously I'm thrilled with his development, but you can't realistically expect anything more than very marginal gains at this point.  Defense is where the team can make some meaningful improvements that translate into wins, playoff seeding, and hopefully another couple of victories in January and February.

Actually, the running game represents an area of potential improvement for the offense, but I'm not sure how much that really matters in terms of end-of-season results.  It's really hard for the offense to score more points than they did last year.

Agreed. I think I’m in total agreement with McDermott. The pass/run balance isn’t what’s important, it’s being able to run the ball effectively when they need to run the ball.

Kind of like the first Chiefs game where Buffalo lined up on defense to essentially force the Chiefs to run the ball to win and KC proceeded to absolutely ram the ball down their throats.

Cole Beasley’s head is about to explode from the latest news I bet. And some of his teammates may start putting some pressure on him and anyone else not vaccinated. Diggs appears to maybe already be stoking that fire.

How so?

And, yeah, I'm really torn on the Beasley thing. He's a huge part of this offense, but part of me is warming up to the idea of cutting him. A large part of that is the $ that would be freed up to help with the monster contract they need to give Allen pretty darn soon.

I'm loving seeing this thread getting back going today, but before we get totally back to on-topic, I wanted to post one more little off-topic note...

I felt bad that I couldn't provide any informed feedback on your swamp tour interest. So, my wife and I went to NOLA a couple weeks ago and did do a swamp tour. We went through "Bayou Swamp Tours" which goes through the Jean Lafitte national historical park and preserve. I definitely recommend it if you want to devote a half a day, or so. We did the casual pontoon boat option, but I'm sure if you want to spend a little more and do a smaller group on the much faster air boats that looked like a lot of fun, too.

Good.  I like Beasley, and I'm going to root for him regardless, but ultimately this comes down to a leadership and accountability issue.  Being a member of a team means being available on game day.  It's already hard enough for players to stay healthy during a full season as it is, so it seems pointlessly stupid, selfish, and counter-productive to do something that significantly increases your odds of missing time.  To say nothing of potentially causing a cluster outbreak.

And we all know with 100% certainty that McDermott is pushing this angle hard.  Probably while clapping.

Diggs almost immediately tweeted out “accountability … availability”
