2021 Buffalo Bills - Same as it ever was*** (3 Viewers)

Spiller showing today he needs to be resigned. He was a game changer today. Certainly don't wanna crazy overpay but need to keep the youth & continuity on O. Just don't see EJ ever evolving into a 300 yd QB but games like today are perfect. We shoulda won by more but I'm very happy winning this way.
The rift with Marrone, the lack of a contract now, the Bryce Brown trade, the FJax extension, the reports that they wanted Carlos Hyde...

I like him too but there can't be much more writing on the wall that he is gone.

This practice of drafting guys early and letting them walk just as they prove their value needs to come to an end. How many first round picks of our are now starting for other teams?

I get the argument that RBs are easily replaceable. So maybe quit drafting them in the first.

Went to the game today. "New" stadium looks nice, my first time there...much larger entry gates, some new scoreboards, etc. The outskirts of the stadium seem to look a lot nicer than in the past...a little more friendly, a little less "utilitarian concrete". I didn't really notice a distinct difference in the tailgate atmosphere, to be honest, but a good time as always.

Where I did notice a difference today was during the game. I'm not sure if it came off this way on the TV broadcast, but that was one of the most (if not the most) consistently loud I've ever heard the fans.

There was an oddly confident optimism going into the game, that I could sense. I would even maybe call it a "winner's mindset" or something like that. Over the course of the week, I had been talking with some friends, independently, about the game, and I heard 3 different times that "Miami has no idea what they're walking into on Sunday". And it sure looked like they didn't. The Bills ####### dominated all day.

I listened to the radio call. Murphy said it was the loudest he's ever heard the stadium. Sounded awesome. Bet it was a ton of fun to be there.

I saw the Bills beat the Bears last week and looks like I'll catch the game in Detroit in a few weeks too. Looking like we're in for some good times finally.

Spiller hasn't had an agent since his agent died just a few months after he signed his first contract. The Bills haven't negotiated with him until now because of that. My bet is they get something done.

Almost regardless of how this particular season goes, I'm much more optimistic about the future than I have been in a while. The stability that we have now as an organization (new owner, willing to spend, not going to move) is such an improvement over the past 10+ years and puts us back on something like equal footing with other teams when competing for coaches, FO folks, and free agents.

Ya I definitely agree with the 2nd part. It appears most NFL teams have caught on, finally.

I hope so. He shouldn't be a break-the-bank resigning given the current market value of RBs.

Big test at home against SD next week. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this team matches up against another potential AFC wild card contender.

lol, Super Bowl run.

I'll take an above-.500 season, for starters.
I wasn't talking about this season. Oh, lol.
Well, you said "this team" in your post, which implies - to me - that you're referring to the current team, this year. I agree that the current Bills team is nowhere near good enough to contend for the Super Bowl without elite QB play. I'd just be happy with a winning season. Sorry if I misread your post.

getting a west coast team playing an early game should help.

both teams probably due for a bit of a letdown, but at least the Bills should have a great crowd behind them again.

I was also at the game today & the $200 was worth every penny. I've been too many Bills' games & several home openers and this was by far the best experience I've had at the Ralph. The atmosphere was absolutely electric & a totally different feeling from seasons past.

It was by far the loudest sporting event I've ever been at. Jim Kelly's speech during the pregame lit the fuse & when he ended it with "squish the fish!" , the Ralph exploded. There was a different, more positive vibe in the crowd which I haven't experienced before- like everyone knew the outcome was inevitable today.

Just an outstanding game. Held Cameron Wake to just 0.5 tackles the entire game. Seantrell Henderson, 7th round pick RT, really has been impressive so far.. looks like a steal.

Sammy Watkins had his breakout game: 8 rec / 118 yards / 1TD. He looked like the real deal & worth what they gave up for him in just his 2nd pro game with bad ribs. He adds an entire different dimension to this offense that we have not had in a very long time.

The defense looks like it is on the verge of elitness. The defensive line is the best in the league.

The run defense was only thing holding them back & that seems to be improved. Brandon Spikes brings everything this LB corp was missing: aggressiveness, hate, leadership, vocal presence.

Corey Graham also seems to be one of the best FA signings in the league so far. Vet presence in a young secondary that has also just made play after play for this team. Whaley learned his lesson last season adter the secondary was ravaged by injury.

I do mean "this team", but not just this year. I'm assuming the core group stays mostly in tact for the next few years, and any losses are roughly offset by gains, so overall they'll be in the same ballpark.

If you think about how bad things could have been, I'm already happy with the season. In terms of the future, they're going to need better QB play in order to become a serious contender, which should be every teams goal. That's all I was saying.

Sure, the goal is to have a great QB. I mean the goal is probably to be great at as many positions as possible.

I just happen to believe you can still be a team that wins consistently without an elite QB. Super Bowls are nice to dream about down the road and all, and maybe the Bills can go on a lucky run like some teams have done recently, but let's just get back to the playoffs first here. It's been a really long time since this team was able to put a string of wins together and look like they know what they are doing and are headed in the right direction as a franchise.

I'm going to enjoy the ride. Hopefully EJ works out, but if he doesn't, it shouldn't sink the team. That's what I mean about building a solid foundation to take pressure off a QB. If you have a strong running game and defense, and enough playmakers and depth throughout the team, you're going to be in good shape most weeks. Bills seem to have that right now. Hopefully they can avoid the rash of injuries that have crushed them in recent years too.

I've come around on Graham. He looks like that #2 (or hell, #1) CB we've needed for awhile now. His coverage was fantastic on Sunday against a burner like Mike Wallace. Twice I recall him being right there to bat passes away from Wallace's hands - once in the endzone.

Great signing. Good captain choice.

You know, i think this team will be underdogs no matter what they do this year, and I think it's a good thing. They're going to play with a chip on their shoulder all year. As a fan though, it can be a touch disappointing at times though.

I was all excited to go read PFF's game review this morning. Surely they would talk about Corey Graham's great game, or Bradham's great job in his first game this year, or Buffalo's absolute dominance by their defensive front, or the absolutely excellent job of pass protection by Buffalo's O-line, right?

Instead, it reads like Buffalo's defense didn't even exist, the Bills' O-line got dominated and the Dolphins either won or undeservedly lost.

So weird.

Bills-Dolphins coverage has been that way ever since I can remember, including the Kelly-Marino era. Not sure why, but it doesn't seem like it's this way with any of our other games -- that just that one.

Well that was fun.

Very loud, and just a great atmosphere. Already looking forward to Sunday vs the Chargers. Keep the Ralph Rocking. Very classy pre game festivities and the gold name on the Wall of Fame with Ralph's was a nice touch.

I know it's Monday but it's cool to already look ahead to the next game (I enjoyed this one plenty last night)

Woodhead will pose alot of problems as well as a healthy Gates this year. It will be interesting to see if Robey will be on Woodhead if he splits out wide. I'd put Graham on Floyd and Gilmore on Allen and hope to get to Rivers with the front 4.

On a positive though Bill Barnwell did have some nice things to say about Buffalo over at Grantland.

The Corey Graham signing really was an underrated move. I anticipate him remaining the #2 CB the rest of the year after seeing his play the first 2 weeks. He has been phenomenal.

He is the team MVP so far and IDK if it's close. Marshall with the game on the line, and Wallace deep middle with zero safety help...Schwartz has asked him to do a lot and he has just made textbook plays.

I couldn't help but think "he can't be this good?". I'm glad Barnwell described him as 'perpetually underrated' as he's one of the few writers with a clue, imo.

Does this team really have stud bookend Tackles for the first time since Wolford and Ballard?

I know it's early, but man they have looked very good against very good competition (Allen week 1, Wake week 2)

They might, but it's harder to tell when the guards next to them offer not much else.

I agree. I generally like Barnwell.

His former FO counterpart Doug Farrah was also fairly positive about Buffalo. Although he did end up downplaying Buffalo's defensive success a bit by blaming Cutler and Tannehill for accuracy issues. Seems to me that their accuracy issues possibly came from the fact that they were under constant pressure from Buffalo's front 4. He also referred to Preston Brown as Kiko's replacement when Bradham is the guy that replaced Kiko. I can understand how a typical media guy could get confused since Bradham was suspended last week and Brown played again this week due to Rivers' injury, but I would expect a guy like Farrah not to screw that up. Or at least not make a point of putting it in an article when it's wrong.

But the very fact I'm complaining about such small potatoes is a very welcome change.

Honestly, the one article I really can't wait to go read is TMQ. It has to be absolutely destroying him that the Bills punted from their opponent's 40 yard line on 4th and short yet again and there is absolutely nothing he can say about it. They pinned the Dolphins deep, Miami didn't advance past where they punted from and the Bills won. I wonder if he just ripped that page out of his notebook?

Some choice selections from PFF:

Breakdown: While it probably wouldn’t be considered an impressive day by Manuel, he has shown improvement over his rookie year. Most of Manuel’s throws were targeted under 10 yards downfield, where he completed 13 of his 17 attempts for 122 yards and a touchdown. However, he was most impressive on the few shots he did take downfield. Manuel was accurate on all three of his passes targeted 20-plus yards downfield, earning a +2.5 passing grade on those throws. The Bills also utilized play action well, where Manuel completed all seven PA attempts for a solid 92 yards.

Signature Stat: Manuel had a QB Rating of 137.3 when targeting Watkins.
Yea, let's keep that up.

Chargers will be in the market for a RB and Spiller would be a fantastic fit. The Ryan Mathews experiment is about to come to an end.

Should be a great game Sunday. SD's record in early games on the east coast is abysmal. You guys have a very good shot at a 3-0 start.

LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE!

Well the line has been bet in our direction from +1 to -2.5 so there's that. I would think that's sharp $.

That stat is mis-leading, The Chargers did well traveling east coast last year and only had one meltdown vs the Redskins.

Rivers is the toughest QB we've faced. Our LB's won't be able to hang with Allen, Royal and Gates on crossing routes. Robey needs to be on Woodhead when split out wide. We need to rush more than 4 to get to Rivers and we need to run the ball. Hoping it's loud again in there!

I had absolutely no idea that Frank ####### Reich of all people was now SD's offensive coordinator. No wonder they're so good all of the sudden.

Hoping he's a mole . . .

Frank Reich could grow up to be Premier of North Korea and I couldn't root against him.

If we can get by the Chargers I think we'll have a pretty good shot at beating Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Texans and starting off the season 4-0. Lions and Patriots will be tough but I don't think they are unwinnable. Especially having the Patriots in Buffalo with how crazy our fans are right now.

I actually think there is a decent chance we go into midseason and our bye week with 6 wins.

haha I was actually just changing my picture and signature while you posted this.

Potential thunderstorms for Sunday. Season ticket holder for 12 years and I haven't had one delay where they make you go inside.

I go to one UB Football game this year and they storm everyone inside after thunder.

Should be interesting.

I think thunderstorms could help us. We run the ball a lot, they pass the ball a lot.

If it's real bad I think you'll see a good game from Freddie. He's slippery as it is.

Stuff like this is why I love the Fred Jackson contract extension. Even if next year, at 34, he becomes a 50 carry, goal line back, it's totally worth paying him to be on this young talented roster -

Given the veteran leadership on the roster, it wont be difficult to keep guys focused.

Getting off a 2-0 start means nothing, said Jackson, 33. Were pushing guys and letting them know that we still got a long season ahead of us. We got to continue to work the same way we worked in the first two weeks. We just got to keep coming out here and continue to stay hungry and we can take care of business and hopefully get this playoff drought ended.
Also during the same radio segment, he said this of Coach Marrone -

Hes letting guys know much know this is our team and we are capable of doing what we want to do, Jackson said. (Hes) letting us know that we have the talent to compete with everybody and its just about us out-preparing guys. Thats one of the things he wants us to do. He pushed us hard. We had a long training camp and he said we were going to do that training camp just so were prepared for a long, tough season. Guys just fed into that and theyre feeding into it. Were playing well right now. Were off to a great start, but we got to continue to keep working at it.

Windy conditions means lots of crossing routes for Woods and Watkins, right? Stretch the seems with Chandler, and the outside with the other WRs, and let Sammy and Robert gobble up lots of 5-10 yard passes...

Anyway... :suds:

How was that not, either illegal contact, or a block in the back against Gilmore? (I need to see another replay.)
