2021 Buffalo Bills - Same as it ever was*** (1 Viewer)

Why not Kubiak?
I don't think I'd mind. The only issue is that I seem to remember that his offensive scheme sells out the run at the expense of leaving the QB vulnerable. Not sure that would be ideal for the Bills at this point. But he was pretty successful with a Houston team that I never saw as being super talented.

The other big drawback is that you have to wait until the Ravens are out of the playoffs to interview him.

This little tidbit sums Marrone up nicely -

He wanted to approve video clips before they were posted on the Bills website, according to a source. He didn’t want any details of EJ Manuel’s interceptions during practices on the site, either.
What a wacko.

Also this -

Marrone spent too much time in practice working with the offensive line, his pride and joy, rather than taking a broader interest in the team, according to people who knew him in Buffalo.
Well that tactic went swimmingly....

I think he'd be great to pair with Schwartz.

Teams could talk to him while they're still playing, but I just found this where he said he doesn't want to:

Reich and Rex also scheduled to interview.

I'm cautiously optimistic that we're going to have a significantly stronger staff this time next month. If you're looking for an impending trainwreck, it's in the Meadowlands.
The train already wrecked. It cannot get worse there.

Word from inside the organization was that he would order T-Bone steaks at all lunch meetings and insist that everyone refer to him as T-Bone Marrone.

Rotoworld:

Appearing on Sunday NFL Countdown, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported ex-coach Doug Marrone "stormed out of the draft room" when the Bills traded up for Sammy Watkins in May's draft.
It's a display of an extreme disconnect between the coach and the front office. And it's not the only time Marrone, GM Doug Whaley, and CEO Russ Brandon butted heads. The three reportedly got into a heated argument on the practice field in front of the team and media during the season. As a result of the Watkins trade, the Bills are without a 2015 first-round pick. They also don't have a quarterback. Jan 4 - 11:05 AM

Dear MediaGuys:

Please lay off Marrone for a few days. The narrative you were spinning earlier about his HOF-worthy 9-7 record was perfectly fine. After he signs with the Jets, you can report whatever you want, but let's stick to his agent's script for now, okay?

Cordially,

IK

Well I don't blame him for that...
Disagree. Being against the trade is fine - he was sort of right about saving the 2015 first rounder and taking another WR out of that talented class, but storming out of the room like a petulant child? Really? Try acting like a professional, you egomanic. That behavior is exactly the type of thing you'd expect of a guy who demands a contract extension with 2 years left on his current deal, after doing jack squat, and a guy who then takes his ball (a four million dollar ball) and goes home.

What an #####.

I really hope it's not the case, but it would explain why the Bills never seemed to make more effort to get Watkins the ball. Thought it was weird all year that they rarely threw quick slants or bubble screens to him.

You know... that's a good point. Marrone definitely seems like the type that would almost sabotage Watkins' success, if he wasn't on board with the move to go get him.

Agree re: storming out of the facility. That's silly.

But using a clause in his contract to negotiate an extension is just good business. And exercising a clause that he bargained for isn't reprehensible either, IMO.

No, it's not good business if he hasn't done squat. All he had was the clause, not a body of work to back up his bargaining. Add to the fact that he was an abrasive pr!ck, butted heads with management, and made god awful personal decisions (not to speak of gameday ones) and demanding an extension was anything but a good business decision. It was yet another act of an @-hole egomanic.

ETA: for example, reports say he spent too much time with the offensive line, his forte. Yet that group regressed both years he was with the team. Cordy Glenn's anti-development alone is a cause of concern - he went from a potential all-pro his rookie year to a baffling, inconsistent player in his second year. That's just terrible coaching.

The best is when he defends Marrone by ripping the O-line talent and then has it pointed out that virtually the same guys performed MUCH better under Gailey.

Funny how the whole article rips the other writer and then offers nothing more than "The Bills were 9-7 despite low expectations" as his sole evidence that the other writer is wrong. Never mind that tons of other Buffalo reporters have confirmed a lot of the behind the scenes stuff.

And his contention that the talent on Buffalo's roster is straight up laughable. Other than the QB, LG and RT positions, the talent on the team is pretty good I think.

It's going to be great when the Bills upgrade their coaching staff, stick the Jets with a mediocre-at-best head coach, and get a draft pick thanks the inevitable tampering investigation.

Zero chance that this even an investigation, let alone a penalty, but pretty obvious that there was. But tampering happens all the time in the NFL.

I didn't read the comments section but the writing at that site-and the reasoning used to support conclusions-is absolutely terrible. I used to read that site a lot (mostly for rookie draft player analysis) but quit going there this year.

So I find it funny that guy is criticizing other writers.

Like this:

" He was criticized for being a conservative coach. What these people don’t realize is that Doug Marrone just coached the Buffalo Bills to their first winning season in 10 years, and they are complaining about it."

That makes no sense-they aren't mutually exclusive positions.

Then he goes on to criticize Buffalo media for thinking the Bills were playoff quality and emphatically states the Bills were an average team that outplayed their talent due to Marrone's coaching. Seriously? The Bills had a championship caliber defense but a totally mismanaged offense (IMO). First they set up Manuel to fail by ignoring the running game early and throwing 30 times a game (at least it seemed that way to me, I haven't checked). The play calling was atrocious all season. And nowadays a lot of "average" teams are playoff caliber-it's all about peaking at the right time.

I'll likely skip their rookie player analysis going forward as well. It was always very detailed and nicely organized but player rankings were really out of skew with most other opinions (not that that's necessarily a bad thing) and the writing often struck me as slightly child like -always an odd or unprofessional phrasing that made the writers come across as right out of college (at best).

Now back to read the comments section for that terrible article (and website).

I'm getting this from the Jets fan boards. I'd be mildly surprised if the Pegulas don't pursue this depending on some of the "facts" that have been throw out there.

Honestly, Gandalf, you watched this team for 16 games this year like I did. Why worry about what some ######## with a blog thinks? You and I both know that Marrone-the-offensive-genius added nothing to our win total this year aside from the QB switch, and it's not even clear that that's a net plus.

Yeah definitely. Not really worrying per se-just kind of amazed at how poorly written it was and how bad the conclusions were.

I'm of the belief that a team that needs to bring in 9 HC candidates is a team that isn't prepared.

I don't care if your HC is Bill Belichck - as GM you should have a solid list of 3-5 candidates you know inside and out and be on your radar in the event you suddenly find yourself without a coach.

Bringing in more than that is just a goat rodeo and you're grasping at straws.

I'm not sure this is true. I've heard the viewpoint that bringing in as many "outsiders" as possible in a HC search can give them team a good perspective about how others see their strengths and weaknesses.

In other circumstances I might agree with this, but given that our owner is new to the league, I have no problem with casting a very wide net. At least this ensures that he has a good understanding of what the market is like.

Except this makes it look like the owners and the organization don't know what they are doing which surely will turn off a lot of good candidates.

Any candidate who blames the owners for doing an exhaustive search for their first big hiring decision is an idiot who I don't want anyway.

You have to look at it in the bigger picture... They failed at bringing in their "football czar" but kept the GM and president on board. No one knows who is actually making decisions now or will be making decisions in the future.

And there is a difference between a wide net and having cattle call auditions. This is starting to look like the latter. Can you recall any other coaching search like this? Even with new owners?

I really want to cheer on the Pegula's & am still thrilled Marrone is gone; but it's tough to be optimstic about what's going on over there. Russ freaking Brandon is still involved? They're not looking at college guys at all? Seems like we're going to do plenty of punting in opponent's territory again.

Have any of the other teams with vacancies looked closely at many college coaches? There doesn't seem to be a hot college coach this year -- we don't seem to be alone on this one.

It seems to me like everybody is conditioned to criticize the Bills every couple of years when they blow up the staff and start over, and in most years that criticism has all been completely warranted. This time, though, it seems to me that things are going fairly well. We got rid of a coach who really had no business being in this position to start with, and we're interviewing the same group of coaches (mostly) that all the other teams are talking to. I can't relate to the dour mood that some folks have. To me, things are going are pretty well this time around.

I'd say on the contrary, there's typically a honeymoon phase (~1.5 yrs) with a new coaching hire.

I don't know/care what other teams are doing. If they're interested in Marrone, that's a sign I don't want to be like them.

Why not Kubiak?
I don't think Gary ever truly shed the OC job. He never really coached the whole team. He picked two terrible DC's to run the defense, and then, supposedly, hired Wade Phillips because McNair made him do it. I like Kubiak as an OC, but not as a head coach. I also think his offense became predictable and stale in Houston. Part of the problem was Matt Schaub, but part of the problem was the defense knew what plays Houston was going to run, which led to the pick 6's that Schaub threw.

Plus, it does not appear that Kubiak wants a HC job right now.

Josh McDaniels? Really?

What has he ever done without Tom Brady playing QB for him? His tenure in Denver was a disaster.
I am giving McDaniel's a pass for his initial coaching situation, maybe he was not quite ready but I think he has the potential to be a very good coach who has tons of experience with successful teams and play-off situations. He also has worked under a hall of fame coach and with a hall of fame qb and unlike you I see that as a positive and I don't think that will hurt him going forward. Keep in mind when you say what has he done in his career he is only 38 years of age. He has a lot of coaching left in front of him.

I think McDaniels at some stage is going to be a steal of a head coach for someone in the league. He was 8 and 8 his rookie year as a coach and then things went south in his second year and was fired after a 3 and 9 start. It appeared he had to swallow some of his over confidence he had in his initial stint. But I really do think he will turn some team around and be good.
He also started that rookie year at 6-0. After that, he was 5-17 over the next 22 games. So things started to go south during his rookie year.

Wow. WGR interviewed Fred Jackson this morning and he just about came right out and said that Hackett is an aggressive offensive guy but that Marrone called the shots on game day and forced the offense to be conservative. I feel bad for giving Hackett so much heat. He was a victim of Marrone just like so many others.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with the candidates and casting a wide net, especially considering the new ownership and the relative surprise that they now need a head coach.

I do have an issue with the seemingly lack of structure and fire drill way they are going about things. I still can't figure out if they're looking for an adviser/guru, new president, new GM, etc.

This is like finding out that Kevin Spacey was Keyzer Soze all along.

I've been kinda tracking this coaching search. Here's some "facts", please feel free to comment if I've missed things....so much information/misinformation out there. I will be tracking this until a hire is made.

Main Candidates (in no order):

Broncos OC Adam Gase - reportedly interviewed Sat 1/3 (Buffalo News)
Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell - reportedly interviewed Sat 1/3 (Buffalo News)
Seahawks DC Dan Quinn - reportedly interviewed Sat 1/3 (Buffalo News)
Chargers OC Frank Reich - reportedly interviewed Sun 1/4 (PFT)
Former Washington HC Mike Shanahan - rumored to be "talking" to the Bills, per Schefter and WGR's Joe Buscaglia; no interview confirmed (SB Nation/Schefter)

Longshots:
Patriots OC Josh McDaniels - no confirmed interview scheduled yet. McDaniels has hinted that he is not interested in moving to a team in the Patriots division, thus ruling both Bills and Jets out. (WGR 550)
Bills DC Jim Schwartz - rumored to be getting an interview, nothing confirmed yet (Joe Buscaglia)
Colts OC Pep Hamilton - Bills have requested an interview, nothing confirmed (NFL.com)
Bengals OC Hue Jackson - Bills have requested an interview, nothing confirmed (NFL.com)
Former Jets HC Rex Ryan - no confirmed interview scheduled yet, no real confirmed interest between two parties
Lions DC Teryl Austin - Bills have requested an interview, nothing confirmed (Schefter)

I think you're selling him short- Houston was an expansion franchise that won 2 games in the season prior to him taking over. He got them to .500 in his 2nd season and won their division twice in a row. Their record is 61-64 under him and 27-56 under everyone else. All this with Schaub, David Carr, TJ Yates (won a playoff game with him), Sage Rosenfels, and Case Keenum at QB. Sure, his last season was awful, but that was without Foster and Schaub for ~half of the season.

The Bills clearly need an offensive mind, and Kubiak is the best option IMO. If they can pair him with Schwartz, that would be a huge win.

Greg Gabriel lost his credibility there.
Was this guy a credible writer before this? I'm not familiar with his work.

I've seen community college drug causalities write more reasoned pieces than that. I really mean that.
http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Greg-Gabriel-1873.html

I don't think what he wrote is that bad actually and would take back what I said earlier. The piece he's ripping was pretty harsh.

and there are likely people in the Buffalo News or local media who deserve to be called out for being overly negative at times.

this seems to confirm they met with all 4 above over the weekend.

So far, the Bills have spoken with Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase, Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, and San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator and former Bills quarterback Frank Reich.

I'm struggling to find a favorite. I think I'd actually be in favor of giving McDaniels another shot.

I know almost nothing about most of them. I'll defer to Waley's/Pegula's judgment on whoever they hire. It seems like most of the people we're interviewing are getting interest from other teams, too, so that seems to confirm that we're on the right track.

Although I like Schwartz kept where he is, I would like to see Todd Bowles get into the conversation.
