2021 Buffalo Bills - Same as it ever was*** (2 Viewers)

Probably. But I believe Walt Powell is more deserving of it based on this off-season/pre-season.
Based on pre-season??  Powell was the 2nd option at the return game once Bush game.

Bush has been the 2nd option after McCoy but he'll only get 10 or so touches a game if McCoy is healthy.  Totally agree that Williams will be the main back-up by mid-season.  Also Williams seemed to get a lot of red-zone touches so he'll be more valuable in dynasty leagues if you can stash him.

I don't know why I feel this way, but I'm starting to get the feeling that this season is either going to go extremely well or extremely poorly with little middle-ground.  Tyrod takes a step forward, Watkins shows his superstar talent, the defense clicks in Rex's second year, and this team starts winning difficult games and makes the playoffs.....or Tyrod takes a small step back, injuries abound, penalties abound, the defense is a total tire fire and Rex loses the team.

I have no real basis for these thoughts, but it's just kinda where I am at the moment.  I averaged the two and said I'd predict the Bills to go 8-8, but I'm not sure I really even believe that.  I think they have a better shot at going either 10-6 or 5-11 than 8-8....I just don't know which of those two is more likely.

I can't see Tyrod taking a step back. Everything about him is trending up. He's looked fantastic in preseason. He has commend of the offense and the clear respect of his teammates.

I worry more about the right side of the o-line being a disaster (again). I worry more about Watkins getting injured (again). I worry about Shady getting injured (again).

My gut says the defense will be better than we think after the injuries to Ragland and Lawson and the loss of Manny. Hughes will have a doubt digit sack year. A young unknown LB will emerge. The secondary will be lights out. They'll be a middle of the pack D that will have prove itself against the run more than the pass. Brady will still carve them up though, but he should enjoy it because his age and the ascending Bills talent will finally put an end to that in 2017.

It's a crapshoot year for sure, though. I rather like the feeling. I was only partly kidding when I posted earlier about going into the season with low expectations. I have them, partly as a self-defense mechanism against heartbreak. But a sneaky part of me sees your 10-6 prediction as possible.

Seriously question: any of the guys in this thread want to try to see a game together? We've posting and suffering together for years. Why not have a couple beers and get loud in person?

I know Tasker has season tickets, so sitting together might be out for him. Unless he has a few and would be willing to sell them for a Bills cornhole.

Man, it's been over a decade since I tailgated. The past couple times I went have been family affairs with Fly Jr. and the wife. It'd be good to down a few with laughs before a game.

Grigs? Grove? Anyone?

A lot of people come check out my good buddies father's tailgate then just go watch the game at the Big Tree or Danny's - Come visit.  Follow @pintotailgate on twitter for directions.  It's a fun time. An away game could work too.

I hesitated to say "step back"  because I really don't think Tyrod will take a step back.  I could see him having a similar season to last year, decent numbers, maybe a short-term injury, and not really progressing so to speak, but I don't think he'll be markedly worse.

I do have season tickets, but just 2 tickets.  I'd be up for some tailgating though, I tend to bounce around from tailgate to tailgate depending on the week.

There is an outside chance that I may have to sell my tickets for 1-2 of:  10/16 against San Fran, 10/30 against New England, or 12/18 against Cleveland.  I'm pretty certain I won't be able to attend 1 of the 2 of those October games but not sure which one at this point (long story)...a friend of mine might buy the tickets but hasn't committed yet.  I wouldn't know until it gets a little closer though, which doesn't really help you out-of-towners who would need far advance warning.

Read my post... based on pre-season/off-season. Are you insinuating that the pre-season means nothing? Because if that were the case, a lot of people made teams or lost their jobs based on those meaningless games. It's an opportunity for players to perform at full game speed and put everything on display. I don't know of anybody who hasn't been impressed with Powell this off-season.

Powell has looked very good. Bush hasn't flashed anything that makes me believe he will do better than Powell. He returned 2 total punts last year. Before that he hadn't had a return since 2011 where he had 6. He has 1 kick return in his entire career.

Sadly, Powell has more recent experience in the return game than Bush, as he had 12 punts and 8 kickoffs in 2014 for the Jets.

I also disagree that Bush is in line for 10 touches per game. Rex even said Gillislee is the #2 back. Bush may be out there for plays that they schemed specifically for him or for him + McCoy together, but 10 touches is pretty lofty IMO.

We just signed Brandon Tate as a return specialist.  Sounds like we are just going to have more specialists and trick play-Roman packages.

I just saw that. Surprised that they signed him. We get rid of Jordan Gay for kickoffs, now have 3 guys who are basically return specialists in Bush, Powell and Tate. Very odd.

Yes and Gay is back on the practice squad so will be on off all year potentially, as long as he goes unclaimed.

Who's the edge guy opposite Hughes?

I looked on Ourlad's, they had Lorenzo Alexander.  That ain't right.
Right now it's Lorenzo Alexander.

Shaq Lawson is generally expected to start once healthy by midseason.  The team cut Manny Lawson, whom many considered the starter.  Rex was very adamant in interviews after the Manny Lawson cut that Lorenzo Alexander beat him for the starting job.

Pretty shocking. Hopefully they know something we don't. The Front 7 was concerning before Manny Lawson was released. And bringing in a returner instead of DL/LB help is surprising as well.

Seantrel Henderson suspended for 4 games due to weed. He says he was using it as treatment for his Crohns disease. Which I would be able to buy as legitimate more if he hadn't tested positive twice in college for weed. Either way, doctor prescribed or not, it's against the law in NY, against federal law and, most importantly, against NFL policy. No way he wins his appeal.

I like the talent the Bills have acquired, but the injuries and suspensions have already taken a big bite out of that and murdered their depth. This team is eggshell thin at every position.

Whether or not that's a legitimate medical prescription, how dumb do you have to be as an NFL player - one with a prior history of drug test failures - to just blindly take a doctor's advice and start smoking and not attempt to clear it with the league, your team's management, etc.?

I have four season tickets in the upper bowl (313) and sparse plans so far other than a couple games

I will probably give a bunch to customers but if folks here are looking to arrange a get together I will sell them at cost.

How much? My 3 brother-in-laws are going to the Jets game. The other game we were looking at was the 49ers game as one of them is a 49ers fan. But, depending on what is available and the price, would be interested in other games.

I'd definitely be in favor of it if I can ever make my way back for a game. I don't think I'll be able to make it back to the area until at least the holidays, though. I'll keep it in mind as I make my holiday plans.

Taking a look at the standard playoff predictions, and as usual, no one has the Bills going anywhere.  Florio picked an easy Ravens win.  Yahoo released their pundits' predictions and no one has the Bills in the playoffs.  Only 1 person in the Buffalo News (Vic Carucci, I think) had the Bills in the playoffs.  None of CBS people have the Bills in the playoffs.  Zip from the SI writers.  ESPN predicts an 0-4 start.  WaPo, USA Today, pretty much every major newspaper predicting the Bills to either finish dead last in the division by a mile or go 7-9 or 8-8 and be average yet again.

But for some reason, 538 says the Bills are the 12th best team in the NFL.  I don't know how they measure it before the season has started, since they're all statistical analysis pretty much, but they've got the Bills at a 36% change of making the playoffs with an expected record of 8.1-7.9.  They have New England 6th, Jets 11th, and MIami 26th.  Interestingly, though, they have the Bills as the underdogs in 4 of the first 5 games; the only game they currently project the Bills to win is week 2 vs the Jets at home.  It has to be generated based on last year's numbers, or something.

There's always optimism at the start of a new season, but I can't remember last time the general consensus was as bad as it is right now.  Chan Gailey era?

I'm calling my shot now: they will win their opener against Ravens, in dominating fashion, prompting national attention and more than one pundit to downplay the surprise by saying, "well, we always knew they were talented..."

I am serious. The talk of week 1 will be how the Bills D manhandled the Ravens offense. Just watch.

That wouldn't surprise me.

Nor would it if it went the other way. Balt moves the ball pretty well, the Bills' offense is average, they commit bad penalties, committ a couple turnovers and the Ravens win by 17.

Baltimore is not an elite team. I don't care if they have Flacco. Their WRs are terrible, their O-line is awful, their RBs are the definition of mediocre and the defense is way overrated. If the Bills can't beat the Ravens, it's going to be a long year.

Why would you not think it's Bush?  He's been doing the first string KR and PR since he came to western NY.
well, I saw they signed Tate and then read speculation that they would give Bush a bigger offensive role and move him off returns.

“We feel much better than we did quite honestly at any time last year,” said head coach Rex Ryan. “We’ve got three guys that we know can catch it and return it.”

Just who handles what at the outset of the season remains to be seen, though it’s likely that Tate handles kickoffs and Bush handles punt returns. Of course based on numbers there could be weeks where one of them handles both duties.

Joe Buscaglia just tweeted about punt and kick returners.  His words:

"I would expect Reggie Bush gets the first crack at returning punts.  Either Bush, [Walt] Powell, or [Brandon] Tate on kickoffs"

Schedter tweeted that Sammy isn't 100% and doesn't expect him to be targeted much. First I have heard this. Been no talk of him not being 100%. I don't buy it. If he's not 100% he's not seeing preseason action. I have him in FF & DFS and leaving him in.

If it's true, Rex Ryan should instantly be on the hot seat. No excuse for Sammy not being 100% by now.

I appreciate the Bills not getting our hopes up this time around, only to crush them later on.  Much better to rip off that bandaid right off the bat.

:bag:

Same ole' Bills.

I know it's just Week 1, but I think I've resigned myself to accepting that as long as Bill Belichick is in New England, the Bills aren't going to make the playoffs.

I'm beginning to think as long as Rex Ryan is in Buffalo the Bills won't make the playoffs either.

I think Tyrod Taylor could've gone into the huddle and literally drawn pass patterns on his stomach - back turned towards the defense so they can't see the plays, of course - and the offense would've scored more than 7 points yesterday.
