Reminder to keep an eye on him for those with drafts coming up. I got him real late last night. (Pick 199 in an IDP redraft).

I totally forgot about him, and fell into my normal mid-to-late round routine, where I just scan the website's next 30-ish ADPs and find the best value. He finally made it into that range for whatever pick I was at, and I was like "heck yeah" and "why is he way down here".

 
Then again, these are the Patriots and Bills we're talking about.  We all know that Rusell Bodine will now be the first center in league history to win Offensive MVP this year.

If the Patriots can turn Bodine into a good player after being terrible with the Bengals and Bills, the HOF should make an exception and just immediately induct him.

Regardless, the Bills were going to cut him, so good job by Beane to get some value instead. Did it with Teller too.

For the first time since Polian I feel like the Bills have a good GM.

My money is on Duke, with McKenzie a close second.  Williams is different physically than our other WRs, while McKenzie seems like a lesser version of a bunch of guys we already have.  

I doubt McCloud really has any chance over either of those guys.

 
I have a naive question about the McCoy cut.  I read that it helps the Bills clear about $6.4 million in cap space.  But does that help now that just about all the free agents have signed?  How can that money be used?  In signing extensions/renegotiating contracts maybe?

It can be used that way, and it can also be rolled over into next year. Or used to sign someone else's surprise cuts I guess.

I'll be honest, I'm surprised that they cut McCoy. I think it's the right move (a year too late), but I thought for sure with McDermott's history with McCoy and the team continually publicly affirming him that he would be around. 

 
McCloud and Duke both being cut tells me 2 things

1) McKenzie made the team (and probably deserved to with his past and pre-season production and versatility) and

2) Tyler Kroft is not going to be out on PUP and may be available in just a few weeks

Folks, the Bills may have a legit offense if they can get/stay healthy

I’m just surprised (but also not knowing his cap hit) that we couldn’t at least get a 7th rounder for him.

I don't find it surprising at all. Who would want to give up anything for a $9M aging RB?

I still stand by my thought that they would have traded him for just about anything at the deadline last year, but nobody was interested.

 
This is the first year in eons that I've paid attention to training camp and cut-downs because it's always seemed beside the point.  This year I'm excited that we're actually trading guys who we were about to cut because they have value to other teams, and that some of our cuts will not clear waivers.  

Out of the guys we let go, I'm most unhappy about Eddie Yarbrough and Duke Williams.  I would have liked to have kept Shady around as a role player, but the team is probably better off with Singletary as the lead back.

Now we just need to get a punter.

 
Official 2019 prediction:  8-8

Hard to see this team being worse than last year, but I'm not convinced yet.  Defense should border on the top 5, at worst.  Offense may very well be bottom 5.  I expect Allen to show improvement compared to last season, but still leave us scratching our heads and unsure of whether he's definitely "the guy" come the end of the season.  Offense will put up a couple of real stinkers and cost the team some winnable games over the course of the season.  Defense will have a miracle game or two where the Bills win one they probably shouldn't.  They'll be "in the hunt" in December, but those last 3 games will be a nightmare.  I'm sure the Jets would love to return the favor and knock the Bills out in week 17 like the Bills did to them a few years ago, if the Bills can manage to make it that far.

 
I'm going with 9-7.  Obviously this is foolish, but I'm calling the nine wins as NYG, CIN, @TEN, MIA, WAS, @MIA, DEN, BAL, NYJ.  But this team figures to be higher-variance than normal, and Allen's development is going to be critically important either way.  Given the quality of the defense, I could definitely see this team putting together 10 or 11 wins if Allen shows the kind of growth you would expect to see from a second-year QB, and they could end up as a 6-win team if he regresses. 

Honestly, the only games that I feel very confident chalking up as Ls are the two NE games and @DAL.  There's really no reason why this team shouldn't be competitive week-in and week-out.  Unlike last year.

Yeah, we don't really know how or what went down. I'm not killing them, but does anyone think there was any chance on earth Brown would have agreed to go to the Bills? If he did, does anyone think he would have lasted more than 1/2 a season without causing chaos? He saved the front office from themselves IMO.

The Moss/Brown situations are night and day.

Not really.  New England was going to win the division as of this time last week.  This signing adds a weird wrinkle to things, but it doesn't really affect the Bills.

Oh, I agree. I fully expected NE to win the division 24 hours ago.

However, I at least had a tiny bit of hope that maybe the Pats underachieve, and maybe the Bills overachieve, and maybe, just maybe, with a bunch of balls bouncing our way, the Bills could finally knock them off their throne, at least for this year.

Now, with them acquiring one of the best players in the league for free, that long, long, long shot officially went to 0%.

Agree, also thought a split was possible. Maybe AB won’t be up to speed by 9/29 who knows or maybe had another temper tantrum. 

 
There's no such thing as a "must win" Week 1 game, but if the Bills want to be playoff contenders this year, this one is pretty close. 

Plus, Allen vs. Darnold and a Jets team getting a bunch of hype vs a Bills team that is pretty much in the same place as far as rebuild timeline goes makes for a fun Week 1.

Here's hoping for a good game and the Bills managing to pull it off on the road.

I hate it, but for this year, like you guys have said, it isn't as much of an issue.

BUT, if it works out really well, you'd have to think that there is a strong chance that the Patriots will sign Brown to a longer term deal. And THAT becomes a problem because next year the Bills should start to have real aspirations of winning the division.

Then again, maybe one of New England's other key offensive players will see his play significantly decline in the next year or two.  It would have to be somebody who is an integral part of their offense but is nearing the end of his career.  I'll have to look at their roster sometime and see if they have anybody like that on their team.

I don't seriously expect the Bills to make the playoffs, and I have this week's game as an L in my predictions from a few days ago.  That said, I really like having our season book-ended by the Jets.  The Bills and Jets have a lot in common and view themselves as being in similar stages of development.  Week 1 is a pretty good litmus test against a quality opponent that falls into the category of "serious test" (e.g. not Miami) but "beatable" (not New England).  I'm looking forward to seeing how our team faces off against this sort of opponent, and I know Jets fans feel the same way.  Week 17 figures to be a good check-back that could indicate growth or regression over the course of the season.  

Regardless, nobody should overreact to one game.  The Bears and Packers are both going to be fine this year.  Trubisky is going to be fine.  We have a bunch of new WRs, an untested rookie RB, and a completely re-built offensive line that literally hasn't played together at all prior to today.  And while I'm an optimist about Allen, it is a fact of life that he is going to have some ups and downs and I expect a stinker or two (see Thursday night as an example to keep in mind).

That player sold his soul to the devil. I'm working under the assumption that he will play at a high level for another 30 years.

 
That game was certainly . . . something.  At least it was exciting!

Weirdly, Allen had two poor decisions that went unpunished -- one interception that was wiped out by an unrelated penalty, and what should have been an interception that a Jets defender dropped near the goal line.  At the same time, he was severely punished for two tipped passes (one of which really should have been caught by the intended receiver) and a fumble on a play where he did the right thing and just took the sack.  And he gets credited with a fumble on the center-QB exchange that is just a function of Morse missing almost the whole preseason.  But he was throwing lasers all over the field, taking check-downs, staying in the pocket instead of running at the first opportunity, and hitting slants and other short routes on target.  

Basically, the first half was us shooting ourselves in the foot over and over, and the third quarter was a field position disaster that we couldn't do much about.  I like what the Jets are doing with their team, and Mosley and Bell were both sensational, but every bounce of the ball also went against us for three quarters.

And the defense was fantastic.  We are going to be competitive in every game if the defense plays like this,

 
Also, while Bills fans wring their hands over a few head-scratchers by Allen and Jets fans wring their hands over a blown lead, Cleveland just got blown out by Tennessee.  It's probably best not to overreact to one game.

Agreed with all of this. I hope the Bills wisen up and just go With Nsekhe at RT though. Ford was pretty mediocre there.

Love what Singletary gave them today. Sweeney with a  nice job. Brown had a couple of nice plays. Beasley did a lot, but also had two awful plays. Knox showed some stone hands as well.

Next week will be interesting.

Agreed about Beasley, but it's one week and he had a ton of balls thrown his way which is a very good sign.  

And let's definitely give it up a little for Sweeney.  First game in the NFL and the guy looked like the belonged out there.

I said the same thing while watching the game.  7th rounder and he looks like a viable NFL-caliber player out there.  If the Bills have hit on both him and Darryl Johnson as 7th rounders....that's found money as far as I'm concerned.

To be honest, Bell had a good game against us. He's going to be a weapon for the Jets going forward.

But yeah, I love that stat line. :)

 
My comments on today's game:

Offensively, I thought there were a lot of bright spots.  Brown and Beasley are a tremendous upgrade to Jones/Foster; Brown looks like an actual NFL #1 WR out there.  I'll put 1.5 of those turnovers on Josh Allen - the first fumble and the fumbled exchange.  I don't really put the two INTs on him, but he got bailed out on what should have been 2 other picks, so let's not gloss over it.  That said, after a decade-plus of unclutch QB play, I can't stress how much I love seeing a QB with the icewater in his veins late.  Fitz with his "classic Fitz" late game INTs, Tyrod unable to complete a comeback.....this is Allen's 3rd comeback win in just 12 starts.  Throw an INT, fumble an exchange...he keeps his head up, keeps hyping up the team.  Despite his faults, I love the natural leadership he shows.  I would like to see a little more emphasis on the running game next week.  I appreciate Daboll going all-in on the passing game early, trying to show opposing defenses that this isn't a run-first team like years past, but still.

Defensively, what is there to complain about?  I thought Edmunds and Milano were everywhere out there, ballhawking all over the place.  Tre White gave up what, 1 completion (on a very nice tight-window throw from Darnold into good coverage, no less).  Shaq Lawson actually getting some pass rush.  Oliver creating some space and wreaking a little havoc that won't show up in the stat line.  Hughes with 1.5 sacks.  Maybe nitpicking, Levi Wallace got beaten a few times but continues to show great recovery, especially on that late throw to Robby Anderson.  I saw nothing today that changes my opinion that this is, at worst, a borderline top 5 defense in the NFL.  I think there's a lot of negativity from Jets fans about their offense, but I'm not sure people realize just how good this Bills defense is.

Two winnable games the next two weeks, but "any given Sunday", of course.  

 
Shame that Taron Johnson got hurt again. Neal is not really ideal at nickel CB IMO as he's really too slow. But I think the Bills need to plan on another solution at nickel. Johnson is great when he can play, but his small size combined with the physical way he plays means he is hurt all the time.

 
It's only two games, but Allen looks like he took a huge step forward over the offseason.  He's completing about two thirds of his passes and is generally making solid decisions.  I think there's still room for improvement in the decision-making category, but he's playing at a much higher level than he was last year.

Obviously the big test is two weeks from now.

 
Fun game. After the first drive where Barkley ran all over us and the gap integrity and tackling I was nervous for a let down. Allen was calm and collected and had a good three quarters.  I hope Singletary is ok, he pulled up lame and our medical/coaching staff is overly cautious with injuries. A 1-2 week injury anywhere else is 4-6 here. We had a quarter lull for a bit where Tre White was playing some soft coverage's and giving up some slants to 4th and 5th WR's but I'm sure/hope it was by design, versus good teams we can't go in those lull's

It's fun to be looking at other teams injury reports and standings in September. I'll be that guy I don't care. I'll be cautiously optimistic.  The Bills had a pretty good day on the scoreboard.  Bengals, Chargers, Steelers, Broncos all lost to NFC teams.  Dolphins, Broncos, Bengals, Steelers, Jaguars and Jets/Browns all are 0-2.

It's fun to nitpick on random stuff.  I really hope Andre Roberts can get healthy, they don't trust anyone other than Hyde to field a punt and if he gets 5-7 yards it's a win.  Roberts can flip the field for us in the KR/PR game.  I'm surprised they didn't want Beasley back there, I thought he did it a bit in Dallas?  Our punter who had a rough Preseason has looked solid in the first two games but that can change at a moment of time. 

It's fun to be 2-0 and have our home opener, the RALPH is going to be crazy Sunday.  I can't wait.
