2021 Buffalo Bills - Same as it ever was*** (1 Viewer)

They could easily claim it as conduct detrimental to the team.
If he continues to not follow the protocols, yes. But if he comes back and follows the protocols, I think they would have a hard time. The NFL already reprimanded the Bills once for saying that they would potentially use vaccination status as a reason to cut a player.

Some are saying 6.
I’m not totally sure about that. I think he’s ahead of both Kumerow and Davis. He’s stuck around for a while now and Dabol clearly likes the gadget aspect he brings. They also have seemed to view him as their #1 returner so far.

I’m as frustrated as anyone with these guys, but I don’t think either one is going anywhere unless the league mandates vaccination. If either one felt like their roster spot was possibly in jeopardy, I think they’ve be vaxed, especially McKenzie.

Crazy that only 200 players around the NFL aren’t vaccinated and the Bills have like 9 or 10 of them.

If Allen stays healthy, he is going to have an absolutely monster year. And if anyone has really been thinking Beasley could get cut, seeing how it played out today should shut that down.

This team is going to be fun. Maybe frustrating off the field with the Covid stuff, but really fun on the field.

Darryl Johnson traded to Carolina (shocking!) for a 6th round pick.  Seems like a good deal for both teams -- the Bills get some draft capital at a position where they were going to have to cut some legitimate talent regardless, and Carolina gets a pretty decent player for peanuts.

Honestly, it's a really good acquisition for the Panthers.  It's nice that the Bills were able to get something from their glut of D-linemen, but IMO Johnson was worth a little more than just a 6th.  No complaints though.

I've been trying to keep my expectations in check.  Allen is very likely to regress in 2021 because he can't rewrite the franchise record books every season.  The team could be better on paper and still go 11-6 or something because of random variance.  Etc.

It's really hard to manage expectations after how good this team looked all summer.

Yeah, sure seems like the Bills could have received more for a DE that has developed into a decent situational pass rusher and really good special teams guy. With the current Buffalo talent level, 6th rounders may start having a tough time even making the team.

It must mean they really like Efe Obada though. His name was mentioned a whole lot this summer and with his raw he was coming into the league, could be a guy like Justin Zimmer who goes from an afterthought to a pretty darn good player.

It sounds like we're not planning to bring back Hollister.  That's extremely surprising to me.  Not that Hollister is anything special, but he seemed like a perfectly fine, serviceable option at TE during the preseason games.  Beane and McDermott must feel a lot more confident in Sweeney and Gilliam for depth than I do.

Surprised as well.  Tommy Sweeney just blends into the dozens of drought TE’s. Hopefully means Knox is ready to make those simple catches.

Peter King predicts the Rams over the Bills in the Super Bowl.

There's a hell of a lot of hype this year.  Let's hope it doesn't go to the players' heads.

I’ve seen a few experts actually picking the Bills to win it all and Allen to win MVP. ESPN ran simulations and the Bills won the Super Bowl in their simulation. It’s weird to see the Bills getting that much hype.

I do think that the leaders of the team seem to be the types to be confident but not buy into their own hype. The staff certainly aren’t that type either. Allen specifically seems like the type of guy who isn’t going to get lazy just because of his contract or what other people are saying about him.

Alright, I don’t have a buddy who wants to fly down from Canada to see the game so I have an extra ticket. It also means I am flying solo.

Anyone have a friend who wants to buy a ticket at a reasonable price. Over face value but under secondary market (I need to pay for my flight down there). And maybe invite a solo Canadian to a fun tailgate?

Sitting up top, section 313.

8 hrs of travel, landing in Buffalo I could see my town across the water on the other side of the border 😡

Worth it to be there tomorrow.

Sounds like Star may be the only guy missing today’s game due to injury. That’s actually kind of a big deal since the hope has been that Star would help some of the issues the Bills had last year stopping the run. Could see a bigger day for Harris. But also good that it seems like Harrison Phillips is a full go when it seemed like he would miss a few weeks when he first got hurt. Hopefully he plays as well as he seemed to when healthy during training camp this year. I could see Obada get some playing time at DT as well today.

Sounds like Sanders is a go as well. Hopefully that means he’s fully healthy rather than pushing him back a bit early and having him play hurt. When the Bills go 4 wide, something they’ll probably do 17-20% of the time, I just don’t see the Steelers being capable of defending Diggs/Beasley/Sanders/Davis. Heck, the vast majority of teams in the NFL don’t have the DB depth to defend those 4.

Last year the Bills were in the top third of the league for QB pressures but way low for actual sacks. With Pittsburgh’s new O-line having so much inexperience, Big Ben’s tendency to not be a quick thrower, and what Buffalo has shown from the D-line in the preseason, I could see a big game from Buffalo’s defense if they don’t get run all over. And if the offense can stake the Bills to a lead early and keep the Steelers from being able to run the ball a ton, Buffalo has a chance to run away with the game IMO. Jerry Hughes had one of the highest win rates at DE in the league last year but didn’t get a lot of sacks for a few different reasons. Hopefully with the addition of Rousseau and Epenesa’s development, Hughes will be racking up a bunch of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties after celebrating too much after sacks.

In a thread in the FFA, @IvanKaramazov mentioned that there are a lot of great Bills podcasts. For those of you that listen to podcasts, which Bills related ones do you listen to?

I’ve been a longtime listener of the Buffalo Beat. I’m sad Fairburn is leaving but I’ve always liked Bove so will likely still listen. I love this podcast because I feel like they always tell it straight. They’re knowledgeable guys but don’t get caught up too far one way or the other.

I used to listen to Cover1 a decent amount. They’re super knowledgeable, which I love, but ultimately have too much rose colored glasses for me to handle. Stats and football knowledge are great, but when they’re selected to always make the Bills and every player seem like they’re playing just fine when the eye test clearly shows they’re not, I have a hard time taking it seriously and have to just pass eventually.

I'm going with a prediction of 12-5 for the season (feels weird to type a record that doesn't sum to 16 games).  That actually feels kind of pessimistic, but it assumes that we lose 2-3 games against the likes of TEN, KC, IND, and TB and drop another couple of random games against teams that we should probably beat, like last year's AZ game.  In other words, a few random bad bounces but no terrible luck either.

I expect to win the division without too much drama.  The Bills are legitimately good right now, and while I like Miami's trajectory, they're still a year away and may not have the right QB.  I'm not terribly worried about New England with a rookie QB, and the Jets are rebuilding.

Obviously the key this year is getting the #1 overall seed.  That's kind of all that matters, which is going to make for a weird season of scoreboard watching.  We have as good as shot as anybody, but we're still underdogs to the field.

I watch Cover1, Shout (NYUp with Parrino and Talbot) and Hashtag Sports.

I'm cool with a little homerism here.  Basically what I'm looking for is a smarter version of talk radio (not a terribly difficult bar to clear).  I feel like I'm more connected to the broader fan base thanks to these sorts of outlets.

As I was saying.

My thoughts:

- Allen didn’t look good

- Play calling on offenders was really really bad. Don’t know why Davis was not targeted more. Too many deep passes. And the brutal 4th down call.  The short crosses to the slot were open all day and they should have kept pounding that.

- The defence was OK except there was little pressure on Ben in the second half. We know CB2 will be picked on all year...Bills didn’t address it so they made their bed

- The rushed deep pass to end the 3rd made no sense as they were against the wind. They could have let the quarter end and had the wind at their back. That wasted play came on the same series as the 4th down call.

They thought they had drawn the defense offside but didn't get the call.

Agree with your point that the offensive playcalling seemed fairly awful.

  • Allen looked like 2 yrs ago - not sharp, some questionable decisions (dumpoff on 3rd & goal down 10)
  • 4th down call? - Trying to be way too cute. Brady's taken that 1 yard for 20 yrs & we have a beast at QB. And what's wrong with putting Bass out for a 53 yarder?
  • Opening drive not going anywhere after kick return was an omen. Constantly bogged down in no-mans land on Pitt side of field.

Allen was pressured on 31% of his drop backs despite the Steelers blitzing only once all game. When a team can get that much pressure without blitzing, it makes it really hard for a QB. No question Allen played subpar and has to play better even if he is getting that much pressure, but finding open guys when a defense can drop 7 guys into coverage and still get pressure on the QB rushing 4 guys against 5 O-linemen, that’s a problem.

The Bills officially have a really really big concern in the O-line.

Miami could be the remedy. They only get pressure by blitzing, with only one dlineman above average as a pass rusher, Emmanuel Ogbah. Jalen Phillips is not there yet.  Allen has always done well against the Dolphins. Pittsburgh's dline was #1, Miami's #28 going into the season.

Well, you can't really complain about a big win over a division rival.  But the offense really needs to work out some of the kinks.  Hopefully they're devouring film this week and busting their asses on the installations.

Allen just needs to calm down, remember he doesn't have to do everything.  You're gonna make bad throws sometimes - can't let it get to you.

Two home games upcoming against beatable opponents.  Get back at it and let's get some wins.

Daniel Jeremiah did a piece on Instagram discussing the “get off” stat pertaining to how fast pass rushers get off the ball. He went over some of the top guys last year and top guys this year. Pretty much everyone in the top 10 of that stat it was pretty easy to see that they are elite level pass rushers and that the stat seems to potentially be an indicator of elite pass rushing skills.

The guy who is #2 in that stat so far this year? AJ Epenesa.

Link to piece

Seems that Epenesa dropping that 15-20 pounds may have made a big difference for him and the Bills could have a real gem on their hands.

Just for reference on the above “Get Off” stat, here are the top 6 from last year and top 4 so far for this year:

2020:

TJ Watt

Bud Dupree

Carl Lawson

Yannick Ngakoue

Myles Garrett

2021:

Joey Bosa

AJ Epenesa

Yannick Ngakoue

Myles Garrett

Those are pretty good lists to be a part of.

It's close, so it may depend where you get the numbers from, but this week the Bills are a bigger favorite than the second and third biggest favorites combined.

I wonder when that last happened. It would have had to be early 90's, if even then, no?

Just don't get too cocky - I recall a certain heavily favored Vikings team a few years back that got plastered by the Bills

I've been a Bills fan for 30+ years. I don't think it's possible for anyone who's been a fan for more than 5 years or so to be cocky at all.
I was just thinking about this... The Bills could win the next 5 Super Bowls, and Allen the next 5 MVPs, and that next year I'd probably still be skeptical, waiting for the other shoe to drop...

"Yeah, sure, 5 MVPs... whatever. Give me one more year and maybe I'll stop waiting for (expecting) the drop off."

:P

You're so spooked you're talking to yourself.  🤣
