File under: PopMusic, DanceMusic, SynthPop, Electronica.

Holly Humberstone - Antichrist

Am I the Antichrist?
How do I sleep at night?
Just need to escape my mind
I guess it figures

Kinda into the new album by Austin band, Being Dead. Sorta retro psych? I hear Syd’s Pink Floyd, Nuggets stuff, Foxygen and the Mamas and the Papas? Weird but really interesting.

It’s a fun album. The Ken song is great, funny Sam Smith song too and I like the Butterfly cover much better than that awful original from 20 years ago.

New Blur album is out. I haven't listened to all if it but the songs I did hear reminded me of Super Furry Animals, which is a bit different but not a bad thing. Maybe a bit more mellow than I hoped, but need some more time with it. It did make me go back and revisit their catalog and reminded me how great their album run of Blur, 13 and Think Tank were in the late 90's early 2000's. Glad they are still making music.

Joseph Lawrence – No Good For Me

Soulful new track from this London singer-songwriter.

The Forensics - By My Side

Just released and is a banger from this Lancashire UK Indie Pop band.

Friday Pilots Club - Pushing Daisies (Oh My My)

Tasty Power Pop from Chicago Alt Rock band.

Posted in the “what are you listening to” thread recently, but I’ve been enjoying the new Rhiannon Giddens’ album, You’re The One. Can’t really bucket into a genre — sort of a mix of folk, bluegrass, soul, and gospel. Not quite Nina Simone (no one is), but a song entitled “You Put the Sugar in my Bowl” (and social commentary on “Another Wasted Life”) that shows the influence.

Who knew that I needed an acoustic FIDLAR album as much as I did?

Also, I love how the all caps band went with an all lowercase album title.

Taking Meds' name seems like a play on Talking Heads but their music has a 90s flavor; they even drop the names of Pearl Jam and AIC albums. Their sound owes as much to Power Pop as it does to Grunge. There's nothing radically new here but they have strong melodies, clever lyrics and a good drummer

Every once in a while I try out some pop music. Not normally my thing with a few exceptions (Billie Eilish, for example).

This new Olivia Rodrigo album is quite good. I think I should be more open minded.
I don’t like all her songs but she is very talented and it is crazy how good of a songwriter she already is at her age. She‘ll go very far.
I liked her first album and the new one sounds good as well. And don't let the labels fool ya. It's easy to think she is just another pop star, but Guts is just as much of a rock album as it is a pop one. It has a strong 80s pop rock feel.

I can absolutely go down an 'Indie Pop' rabbit hole, and find some really good songs.

Romy - She's On My Mind

An irresistible, nostalgic dance track.

I've enjoyed some recent albums: Mitski, Olivia Rodrigo, Zach Bryan. The new Sufjan sounds promising. I am about to fire up the new Nas. Anything else?

There's a new Baroness album and it's not named after a color this time.

They sound a little proggier than I remember but it's been a while. The woman third singer seems to play a less prominent role than the last record.

I think you'd like Corrine Bailey Rae's new album. It's all over the place stylistically. Most of her artistic risks pay off and it's never boring (well, maybe the next to last track).

Heads up that Steve Wilson has a new solo album coming out later this month.
Not familiar with him. Something by him to check out?
He has a monster career - solo, Porcupine Tree, various other projects. This song is 20 years old, but always an instant winner:

are you talking about the guy from Porcupine Tree?
Yes.

good weekend for bands with Nation in their name.

Nation of Language - Strange Disciple. I've come to love this synth pop band that reminds me of Human League, Yaz and early New Order. This 3rd album isn't quite good as their first, but I'm still a fan. Sole Obsession is stand out track to me.
The National - Laugh Track dropped this morning. Most of their albums take a lot of listens to warm up to. This new one didn't on initial play this morning. All songs sound very much like The National (not a lot of experimentation), but seems like they've really honed in on their strengths.
