Looked poised for the most part. Made some good throws.  Hopefully we see more next week. Hard to take too much from tonight. 

White in 2nd.  Morgan must be horrendous.  

 
The Jets need a healthy AVT. These guards are terrible (Freeney and van Roten).  Feeney should stick to banging beer cans against his head.

 
The media gushed over Mac Jones (and I do think he looked good) and Wilson looked every bit as good as he did. Let’s see how the reporting on Wilson goes.

Well that one guy (Ian Eagle? Not sure) called that one pass to Davis intercept-able, but it really wasn't.

Our CBs are shaky. We could use a vet.

also think the Jets called the most conservative vanilla of all the rookie QB offenses. Wilson never felt pressured enough to scramble, and he looked comfortable making his check downs.

His also TE let him down on what shoulda been a 1st down - fell down during his route. Wilson timed the pass right but dude was on the ground. He shoulda been 7/9. 

Im excited to see more of him in an expanded offense. 

 
Mims may have helped himself move up the depth chart last night. He was playing against scrubs, of course, but dragging 5 defenders to pick up an unlikely first down was pretty impressive and he looked good with the ball in his hands.

Plus, he apparently specifically requested to get a shot on special teams. 

Obviously not ideal when your 2nd round WR needs to cover kicks in order to get on the field,  but at least he recognizes the urgency here. Not saying he was in danger of being cut, but that becomes even less likely if he can contribute on kicks

 
Some thoughts on last night from watching on Game Pass on my computer without the ability to rewind plays although the game is on the NFL Network now.

Offense:

QB -  Wilson look composed, made good decisions and nice throws. Media-driven bust factor Defcon alert lowered to Defcon 5. Wilson had a clean pocket for the most part, but did make a really good throw the one time the pocket collapsed on him and he got hit by multiple Giants.  2 drives were a small sample, but it was a good confidence-building start.

White looked pretty good for the most part. Not the usual crap-show we see from our backups. Maybe a developmental back-up.  My head almost spun around like Regan in the Exorcist when Morgan completed a pass to Mims. The rest of his throws were pretty crappy and off-target. I was never one of those people that complained that he was a wasted pick, but he may be cut in favor of White.

RB - Ty Johnson had some good runs in the outside zone scheme.Get used to those type of running plays. Carter didn't really stick out. Perine had a nice run, but pretty meh mostly although it's hard to gauge with the backup o-line. Giants got gashed early, but adjusted nicely as the game went on.

WR - Corey Davis looked like the clear alpha WR tonight.  I think we'll see lots of Davis and Moore when healthy. V Smith had a good showing running with the starters. Cole is better than the depth we've had the past few years. The Jets will have a few options, so gone are the days of Darnold forcing passes to Crowder, the only guy that could get open in the past. Mims made a statement play with that beast mode run after catch dragging and breaking multiple tacklers. Who said he couldn't run after the catch? Enough of the he's getting cut nonsense. He even played special teams.

TE - A non-descript unimpressive bunch. I hope they add someone via waivers or trade. Yeboah didn't help his chances of making the team with that fumble.

0-Line- I thought the starters looked pretty good with the exception of Feeney. They protected Wilson well. The tackles held up well. McGovern looked decent.  The run-blocking on the interior could have been better. I can't wait for AVT to start playing.

Defence

Big games from Bryce Huff and Jonathan Marshall. H Rashed Jr looked pretty good, too. The Jets should have a good pass rush for a change. Q should be back this week. I think Lawson only played the first series. Maybe Rankins, too.

Hamsah and Sherwood looked decent. Mosely looked really good in his limited time.  Cashman didn't get hurt as far as we know.

The secondary played fairly well, but didn't face any top starting Wrs other than Slayton. Sometimes good coverage, sometimes soft, once or twice confused. Next week might be a bigger test if GB plays its starters. We could use someone with experience out there.

Special Teams -  Mann had a great game pinning the Giants deep. The coverage guys did a nice job. Nagga looked awful on that fg. I don't think the kickoffs were very good either. Give Ammendola a shot next week and scour the ww. What is up with JD and kickers??? Carter handled kick-off and punt returns, but not much to say about last night's sample or lack of.

Coaching - The team looked prepared. No huge mistakes or penalties. A big improvement over the prior staff, but so would a bunch of corpses. Nice job by Saleh and the staff. There looks to be more depth on the team this year. Lots of rookies contributed and few looked out of place. Good start and limited injuries tonight and in camp. That alone would be a major improvement over last year.

That was one of the worst FG attempts I’ve ever seen. I mean in this era it’s not like a 53 yard attempt is some impossible distance.

 
Just watch Saleh's post game presser. Man....how refreshing is it to watch a coach answer questions and address the media like an actual human being?

So glad we're not going to have to :doh: every Sunday afternoon anymore.

"Coach Gase, your team really struggled to move the ball. What do you plan to do about it?"

" :oldunsure:    oh....I dont know.....what do YOU think I should do about it?"

So great to have an actual functioning adult in the room.

 
Just watched every snap Wilson took on YouTube because we didn't get the game out West and I'm saving Game Pass trial for the dress rehearsal.

Nice game for Wilson. I wasn't blown away by his arm strength, but he looked as good as any of the rookie QBs did tonight, besides maybe Mac Jones, actually. Lance and Fields benefited from busted coverage on their bombs, so Wilson paled in comparison a bit overall, but took what the defense gave him. He wasn't overmatched. Yet.

I don't know, he looked alright. But there was virtually no pressure. The one time there was, he got hit, but he didn't have room to step up, so we don't know how he does with that yet. He got his feet a little splayed when he threw, but still threw a Pennington-esque (before the shoulder) off-platform (yes, it's a buzzy term, but I'll use it because that's what he did) dime to an open guy who had settled in a zone. The first down on third-and-nine you'll almost never see with real personnel out there. They didn't rush and played a soft zone that allowed the first down. They weren't even at the sticks for it, so that was an easy slant. In all, they protected Wilson a lot, just like with Sam, but the out he threw to Davis was encouraging.

In all, I don't really think we lost anything so far moving from Darnold to Wilson, but this year might be a little rough for Jets fans who were expected marked improvement at the position. We still have a long way to go before they hand the reins to Wilson and he fails or doesn't. Because last night the training wheels were on.

The rest was meh. The big takeaway, I thought, was that Ty Johsnon looked like the best RB they had. Carter looked decent, too. They were functional, but I thought Carter left yards out there with a cut or two outside that didn't work when he could have headed North-South for three more or so. But Johnson ran hard and reminded me of Philip Lindsay, which is not a bad thing. At all. That's a functional back right there, and no doubt he ran with the firsts.

I didn't see the rest of the game. I'll take your guys' words for it. I'll look up Mims' plays. I think he needs to step up and seize the job, because I ain't seeing greatness out of Davis. I know I've bashed Mims, but I am ever-hopeful about guys, especially guys that are still developing and that the film grinders have said "Hey, he did pretty well last year in a terrible offense." Matt Harmon and Nate Tice have already said he looked good last year, and they're better at film than probably you or I, so I give it truck.

Anyway, that's it. Let's hope for another good season and it's great to be in these threads with you guys.

Just watched Mims' highlights. Dude is an athletic freak and moves differently than the third-stringers out there. How he'll move or run patterns against the first-stringers will determine it all.

But he clearly belongs on a team somewhere. Let's hope we're smart enough and he's not a real knucklehead off the field so that it's our team that he belongs on. Because you can't coach 6'3", 4.38 with adequate hands and a knack for the ball. You just can't. Let him be our Golladay in Detroit. That's something to aim for.

I was hard on him last year but will advocate like heck for an athlete like that this year. I'm hard on him for off-the-field readiness and knuckleheaded-ness. He might have failed that again. But dude looks the part.

Everybody got what they wanted, I guess. Nothing to say here. Once they were in for a penny, they were in for a pound in Seattle. Two first-round picks for him, though we used one on him at ten. I guess. We'll see how AVT is, really. And next year's late pick, too.

He is a great player and I’d never begrudge a player for getting what he can. I’m just glad the Jets didn’t get stuck paying this bill and got a good deal for him.

Seahawks definitely had to pay him after sending away 2 firsts. 

 
I feel like everybody missed my "in for a penny..." saying.  :kicksrock:

Seattle had to re-sign him. Either way, it's no skin off of the Jets's noses. They got what they wanted for him. They desperately needed O-line help, more than a box safety. Of course, PFF's stats disagree with me, but I'm not taking their inputs into their stats as gospel.

Lawson apparently having MRI on Achilles tendon. 

Mims pulled as precaution, doesn't sound too serious according to Twitter. Same with Rankins. 

Lawson is the big worry. 

 
Jets DE Carl Lawson was carted off the field Thursday.

It was reportedly a grizzly scene, causing players and coaches alike to drop to a knee and begin praying as the cart came out for him. Signed to a three-year, $45 million contract in free agency, Lawson, 26, was inarguably penciled in as New York's most dynamic pass rusher, finishing with the fourth-most pressures at the EDGE position last year. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported that Lawson felt a pop, with concern that he may have suffered a season ending Achilles tear. He'll receive an MRI on his lower leg immediately.

As suspected....torn Achilles. Season obviously over and for a guy who is primarily a speed rusher, seems likely to never live up to anything close to that contract. So there's $45 Million down the drain.

They weren't going anywhere with a rookie QB (especially one I dont really believe in, but whatever...) any way. But yeah, between this and Becton getting beaten like a rented mule for the past month, I'm already kinda over this season.

Y'all are gonna love Saleh. He's a great interview, loves the sport & treats people with respect. I miss him already. 

 
Jets are going to have a near elite o-line this season. they're not going to be Pittsburgh bad, that's for sure.

As a Giants fan , who lived in NJ for decades , I was force to watch Jets on sundays.

came to really respect them ,root for them , etc. it's not a yankee fan vs mets fan type of hatred. ( yankee fans suck, notice they're no longer wearing yankees hats or shirts they're just bandwagon fans who like the Jeter era) Mets/Jets fans wear the goods all the time , everywhere. Much respect  for both teams' fan base. 

Hopefully Wilson looks as good as advertised when they play meaningful games. Saleh is impressive, but I worry that the ny media rips him apart sooner or later. Bonigno still on WFAN? if Saleh sneezes , Joe will trash him for two weeks. I worry that a ra-ra guy has a very short shelf life in drab, dreary depressing NY/NJ.

Carter will be given every chance to be the starter, and no one on the roster looks like they;ll beat him out.

Are we really touting Ty Johnson who has just 117 carries to his career in the NFL as the lead back for the Jets?! oh my.SMH

Moore is going to thrive, Carter was the early round draft pick, so he IS going to  be the starter at some point, probably week 3-4., and Wilson is , so far, looking pretty legit.

This season's win total's ceiling was likely 8 games anyway, so yes it doesn't matter all that much, but I would have liked to see the defensive system get underway and it would be nice to finally see the Jets have a legit pass rush.

I also worry about his recovery and how it will effect him in 2022.

I'm still excited to watch this season to see what Wilson looks like and to hopefully finally see a competent offense. This news surely is a bummer though.

 
Achilles ruptures/tears seem to be the death knell for RBs, but not sure of the history for defensive ends. Can't be good given the speediness of Lawson, but all we have is hope. At least it happened early in the season and he'll have a lot of time to rehab.

I've honestly kinda written Lawson off at this point.  Based on the way he seems to play, (he's a speed guy who needs to be able to bend and accelerate to beat guys off the edge)  I can't imagine he'll ever be the same guy after this. Apparently they can basically get out of his contract after NEXT year. Hopefully they'll have some idea of what they have with Wilson by then and can re-distribute that money to someone healthy.

Real shame based on the camp reports. Guy was tearing it up. They'll still be decent up front, I think (assuming Huff is somewhat for real). But it was going to be the strength of the team and now that's gone. Just sucks.

Just a completely snake bitten franchise. Their last 3 big $$ defensive signings have been absolute disasters (Trumaine Johnson, Mosley and now Lawson).

 
Here we go, folks.

First run by Tevin Coleman. Three. Second down. Little swing to Coleman after downfield was covered. None.

Third down. Separation for Davis. Bullet from Wilson. Twenty yard gain.

First down. Play action. Check down to TE. Seventeen yard gain.

First down. Toss to Johnson. Gain of four or five. Four. Second down. Hand off to Johnson. Gain of two. Third and four.

TAKE THE TRAINING WHEELS OFF.

Third down. Incomplete out to Davis. Ball was inside of the receiver. Not a terrible throw, but he stared down his receiver.

Fourth down. 54 yard field goal. Amendola is good!

 
Wilson with an extraordinarily nice throw to Corey Davis while on the move in the pocket. He launched it off of one foot about thirty-five yards on a line for a twenty-seven yard game.

That's big time stuff.

 
You can only get better with more reps, but after Lawson, I find myself telling Saleh to take Wilson out after this drive.

That's enough.

 
Yeah, it's gotta be said....the kid looked very good today.  They let him sling it a little bit and it looked effortless. 

Selfishly would like to see him get 1 more drive but that's obviously not gonna happen.

Looks like we might have a quarterback, too. Beautiful drive. Eighteen yard throw and catch. One criticism: That might have had a bit too much loft to it. Almost got his boy killed.

 
But that throw to Davis on the move on the dot was a big-time throw. First one we've seen out of him. May there be many more. Right now, kid looks better than Lawrence, Fields, or Lance have looked. But they all look worse than...gulp...Mac Jones.

Yeah, I wrote that before the TD. Nice drive indeed. Definitely needed to lead Kroft there, but he’s making good throws and looks poised.
