2023 Pittsburgh Steelers. Banged up team loses to Buffalo. Looking ahead to 2024 now (2 Viewers)

trade chart has 1.15 and a 6th for 1.20 and our 3rd and 4th. I wonder if this was the only team they looked to trade up with?

Thank god they didn't do that.  I am a little calmer today.  One busted pick at #20 won't kill us.  But it is a shame they didn't trade down for more picks, to help this roster.

I still think they were better off going BPA than reaching for QB.  I highly doubt Pickett is a game changing franchise QB.  Odds of that aren't better than Trubisky IMO.  Wish they rolled Mitch out this year and if he isn't good, then you get a QB better than Pickett next draft.

I have 2 questions

1. Will Pickett really be starting out of the gate? (Topic title accuracy check)

2. who in SF dynasty will be brave enough to draft Pickett in the 1st?
1. Unknown today but doubtful IMO

2. I don’t play SF so can’t say. If Willis goes to Seattle would he go over Pickett? I would think so.

Re #2, I doubt it, as he's been described at best as a 2-year project, and at worst as a 3-year project. Dude is all upside, no floor.

Pickett has basically been described as his floor is also his ceiling. lol

This report that Steelers tried to trade up to 15 with Houston to get Pickett is funny, sorry. QB-starved teams were passing these QBs up for a reason.

As is, fine, they took their guy, but honestly, he's very underwhelming to my eyes. Shotgun QB who hung on to the ball too long many times, and had a knack for fumbling. He also took 3 seasons of college mediocrity before the lights went on. I would have liked to see some progress before this past wonder season, but it's just not there.

I'm just not sold, but I will hope for the best. His two greatest weaknesses might be huge hurdles. He needs to sit for a season.

No one wants these QB's. It's embarrassing how tunnel focused the Steeler's were on feeling like they just had to have a QB. We'll probably never know but I think if someone had taken Pickett they'd have taken another QB at 20.

Unreal. What terrible pick management. What happens when an owner vetoes football people

Has a number of off-the-field issues - he was suspended for violating team rules and has been ejected for punching another player. He has been called undisciplined by his own head coach - likely scare a number of NFL teams off

great just what they need a WR with off field issues

and we probably won't here about them till he's off the team.

It’s Pickens

🤮
He was actually my third choice after Raimann and Moore. I get the issues, Tomlin sure don't seem scared of dealing with it. I like the upside shot.  This is a guy I remember watching when he was a freshman thinking when he came out he'd be WR1 candidate in his rookie draft.

Pickens has first-round talent and first-round film. Tall, long, sudden, enormous catch radius. Nasty demeanor on the field. Torn ACL and maybe some maturity issues knocked him down the board. True WR1 capabilities. (Chris Trapasso)

I like pickens. Wish we traded back and had more picks. Pickett is on Rooney. But not knowing pick value is colbert. Draft strategy has passed him by.

SCOUTING REPORT: STRENGTHS

Before his injury was NFL Draft’s most physically gifted receiving prospects at 6’3″ and 200 pounds, Pickens has the ideal size to dominate as an outside receiver in the NFL

Supremely gifted player who consistently shows excellent spatial awareness He has great concentration, and extremely strong, soft, reliable hands

Dominates smaller corners and is really tough to bring down - has a dynamic stiff arm in the open field

Runs beautiful routes and has the benefit of a full route tree

Very good athlete with excellent length, impressive hands and catch radius enable him to make circus catches

Able to track the ball over his shoulder and is a balanced, savvy route runner with top field awareness, sets up and sells routes beautifully

Willing and able to go over the middle - whos not afraid of contact

A savvy, natural pass-catcher with reliable hands and very good focus. Snatches the ball out of the air and shows the concentration to make acrobatic catches look easy.

Amazing red zone target can jump and make contested catches with a Randy Moss quality

Is really fluid who always plays in control - makes the game look easy

Has excellent speed (4.47) straight-line speed and takes advantage of open seams when his quarterback is on target.

Often used on deep routes, getting separation down the sideline or over the middle on crossing routes by extending his arms rather than pure speed

SCOUTING REPORT: WEAKNESSES

Elephant in the room is his ACL injury and the extent it's hurt his value - is undetermined. Although he looked fast at the combine which should help shift some doubts

Never looked explosive off the line of scrimmage - his injury may make this a bigger issue

Has a number of off-the-field issues - he was suspended for violating team rules and has been ejected for punching another player. He has been called undisciplined by his own head coach - likely scare a number of NFL teams off

Hasn't ever really produced top-level numbers - he's only put up 1285 yds in three years in college

Does not always use his hands to secure deep throws, allowing the ball into his pads and chest.

Has a lanky frame and will be overmatched physically by most cornerbacks in the NFL. Needs to be more competitive in tight coverage.

On the field, zero issues with Pickens.  Guy can ball, and did it in the SEC.  Absolutely has WR1 potential.

The fact that every friggin' QB would have been there at the pick though....

So let's pretend we didn't take Pickett in the 1st and he lasted till our pick in the 2nd. Now we're arguing Pickens, who PFF had ranked 28th, verses some other player that got drafted around that spot.

What a joke that these QBs are getting passed on by teams in desperate need at the position.
It should not be that shocking,  imo.  This crop is really, really, "meh", and tons of fans/talking heads/draftniks have been saying so for, what,  6-8 months now(longer maybe?)?  The way this has gone down is confirming the league thinks so too.

That aint Kenny Pickett's fault, but id be lying if i said it wasnt incredibly galling to see "the field at QB" still available when your team took one 36 picks ago. 😑

Barring trade, we will have chosen the sole qb in the first two rounds. And zero people had Pickett head and shoulders above any of the others. Terrible terrible drafting.

"You want the guys you want"/"5th year option" etc etc...  I can get that, but like I said before, selecting Pickett(or any of these qbs) smacked of "drafting with Rooney's ****"/chasing the ghost of Marino/some other equally esoteric reason rather than a "football" one.

I like the Pickens get.  Still would prefer they were being more proactive in fixing their run defense. (particularly since they appear to be intending to try and win games playing '90s brand football).

Love the Leal pick
I wont go that far.  I like him a little though.

Checking out clips, he has some moves/counters for a bigger dude.  Seems to know what he is doing when attacking gaps.  Sounds/looks like he might be better as a 5-tech in the long run, but thats a thin/aging area for the team too. Should be able to help them as part of the DL rotation sooner than later.

He's not that run crusher in the middle they were missing when Alualu went down last year, but he should be a good, servicible piece on the DL with potential for more than that.
