2023 Pittsburgh Steelers. Banged up team loses to Buffalo. Looking ahead to 2024 now (6 Viewers)

What I find interesting is the Ravens really don't have any idea what Jackson is going to do. I assume that he will eventually sign the tender (assuming no teams make him an offer) but he could just as easily decide to sit out.

Will the Ravens use a high draft pick on a QB in 2023 or is their plan to go with Tyler Huntley and Anthony Brown ?

I think he plays for the tender if that's his only option, but he won't report until days before the season starts.
I agree that he will probably do that too, otherwise he is walking away from $35 million, but that is exactly what LeVeon Bell did . Granted it wasn't for $35 million but since Jackson has been looking at the DeShaun Watson situation he may come to the conclusion that sitting out a season isn't going to negatively affect his ultimate goal of getting that guaranteed contract.

When you consider he has been paid that same amount after 5 seasons, it becomes lucrative for him to double his income in 1 season alone. Plus, he can wait until Hurts, Burrow, and Herbert see where the market stands. It's a risk, but I think the money is too much to pass on.

A couple of days late but the Steelers released CB William Jackson III. The Steelers acquired the former #1 pick in a trade with the Commanders late last season but he never played a down for the team due to injury. The draft picks involved in the trade were voided for this reason.

By cutting Jackson, the Steelers freed up more than $12 million in cap space

TJ Edwards signs with Bears on a 3 year deal averaging $6.5 million. Feels like the Steelers should have matched/beaten that. Though we'll see how he does with a less dominant defensive line.

Did not see this coming but we lost Cam Sutton to the Lions. Thought we were keeping him.

$33MM for 3 years with $22.5MM guaranteed. I guess that last part was the issue.
My thought right now is the OL that might suffer from this. I thought the draft was very deep at CB so they could afford to go OL in round one and address CB with one of the seconds, that was if we signed Sutton. Not sure they can afford to not take a round one CB now, and also one in the second.

$11 million/year would have made him fourth highest paid player on the team. I like Sutton but I don't think he's worth that

He was always getting somewhere between $9MM and $12MM it seemed.
I thought he'd be closer to the low end because he's mostly slot. But I thought the Steelers would match $11 mil per, especially if in reality it's a 2-year contract with an out. It could have been structured to have a low cap hit this year with escalation into the final years with maybe a $3-5 mil dead cap if cut after year 2.

Well, I think this makes it a 90% chance we take CB in the 1st. Also, I think this lessens the chance we cut Witherspoon even though he's not worth his current contract.

Prediction:
  • Keep Witherspoon and Wallace
  • Draft CB in 1st
  • Re-sign WJ III on a cheap 1 year deal

Is there a shrug emoji? He was our best corner by far and has produced at a level even with higher salaries across the league, like $13+ million a year.

Makes corner an even bigger need. It was top 2 if we re-signed him...

Back to the Steelers being quiet at the start of FA except when it comes to losing players.

Though, I am happy that we have Trubisky at the same price as Mike White.

This seems like a pipedream mock draft, but just got it at PFF.

17. Joey Porter, Jr. - CB, PSU
32. Dawand Jones - OT, OSU
49. Trenton Simpon - ILB, Clemson
80. Nathanial Dell - WR, HOU
120. Moro Ojomo - DE, Texas
235. Ricky Stromberg - C, Arkansas
242. Brenton Strange - TE, PSU

I am not surprised by losing Cam, if he was going to sign at the Steelers price, it would have been done already. I like him, but that is too much money for a slot corner and as an outside corner he is a solid starter, but not more than that. It was the right move not to overpay. Two CBs in the draft is now a very real possibility

Cam going to the Luons has upped the chances Porter is there at 17.

Social media posts blasting Peterson. Said he wanted to go to a contender then signed with Kenny Pickett’s team. Even as a Steelers fan, think that’s funny.

Interested in contract terms. Over reaction losing Cam or veteran presence in backfield?

A few years late . . . .
The last I heard, he sucked. But apparently, after Zimmer left, they changed his role and he actually had a good year last year. He operated in a more fluid role that allowed him to roam and emphasized his playmaking ability, resulting in more interceptions and plays made. Depends on the contract, if it's anywhere closed to what Cam got ($8 mil a year or above), then this was a poor start.

Hopefully it's a 2 year deal with an out after 1 year.

The Claypool move was a stroke of genius, trying to remember to put faith in Omar and not view the ILBs and Sutton signing elsewhere with sadness.

Any ILBs left out there???

Plenty. The top-rated ones are

Lavonte David
Bobby Wagner
Leighton Van Der Esch
Drue Tranquill
Alex Singleton
Kyzir White
Denzel Perryman
Azeez Al-Shaair
Cole Holcomb

and others

off the top of my head and PFF article. I roster some in IDP dynasty so I'm aware of them being free agents. There are a bunch more, I think. Edmunds is gone to the Bears. Okereke signed with the Giants. Anzalone re-signed with the Lions. David Long went to Miami. Germaine Pratt re-upped with Cincinnati.

Those are the main guys

The top of my list right now are Kazee and Edmunds. I hope we can re-sign both to cheap 2-3 year contracts. For ~$2-$3 mil per year. Retooling with CBs means that having S stability would be good.
Tomlin and Khan attending Clemson pro day. Bresee and Simpson in play.
The Bresee buzz has been there for a few weeks. I wouldn't be shocked if he was our 2nd pick. At 32 or if we move. I would be a bit surprised if he was 17, feels like an overdraft based on current market.
