2023 Pittsburgh Steelers. Banged up team loses to Buffalo. Looking ahead to 2024 now (3 Viewers)

Apparently we just signed Cole Holcomb from Washington.
Don't know much about him, is this a win or a risk?
This is stupid to bring up but the only reason I know much about him is I signed him to the Steelers in my Madden Franchise. I'm in 2025 and he's been a B+ so far, lol.

Seriously he does not seem overly risky but can't say for sure until I've seen the contract. He seems solid, solidifies a position, biggest risk is he's coming off surgery. Can't say it's a win for sure however. I wanted David Long but I'm going to trust the process.

Replaced Spillane with Holcomb, replaced Sutton with Peterson, and added a guard going to his 3rd team in 3 years.

There are glaring holes at ILB and CB. They should be looking to upgrade at LT and their DL, which has been giving up yards on the ground for 2 seasons now.

Leaving all to do in the draft is a bit much.

The Steelers were reportedly negotiating with Vander Esch but he re-signed with the Cowboys. Assuming Holcomb passes his physical and is healthy he is a substantial upgrade over Spillane and Bush.

I've already commented on the other moves so no need to repeat myself. So far I think they are doing a decent job but you are correct: they aren't going to fill all of these holes in one draft.

They have a glaring need at ILB, and CB is not far behind.

They need an upgrade at LT over Moore.

They need a run stopper on the DL, some youth since Cam is on his last legs, and depth is required there as well.

They need depth at OLB as last season showed.

Depending on the Edmunds situation, they might need a safety to add to the list.

I'm aware they can't obviously fill all these needs right away, but their FA moves have not addressed much to be honest. There's no major upgrade anywhere on their starting roster in comparison to the 2022 season. There's still time, so we all wait and see what's next.

Just for giggles.. Would Lamar Jackson at QB put the Steelers in the mix as an AFC top 4 contender with KC, Buffalo and Cincinnati? Despite Matt Canada calling plays, Lamar alone would extend drives and score more touchdowns. His weapons at WR have never been this good compared to his time in Baltimore. Better offense in turn, allows the defense to get more rest and be more efficient later in games.

For argument sake, let’s say the Steelers find a way to make the cap numbers work on a 5 year deal and Baltimore let’s him walk. First round picks are lost this season and next. Rounds 2 to 4 draft picks land OT, CB, LB and DL. 7th round TE and G projects. We know it won’t happen but what if?

Theoretically LaMar would make them a contender, at least in their division, but as you pointed out they still have significant holes to fill in one draft. Given the pounding that Jackson takes and the risk of significant injury I just would not want that much guaranteed money tied up with him.

Don’t see any draft scenario that’d give me hope more than pulling off signing Lamar.

Defense cap numbers are higher than any team in the league, yet the glaring holes are greater on that side of the ball. It’s frustrating as a fan to see so much need on defense when the offense production is a train wreck on a diet.

What would Kenny P get in a trade?

What would Kenny P get in a trade?
Kenny can develop as a potential future starter like a Jordan Love situation. Be ready because he will get a chance to step in for a few weeks at some point over the next few seasons.

Highly unlikely any team outside Pittsburgh thinks Kenny is good enough to give up a first. Keep phone line open if another team gets desperate due to injury. Would be like a bank industry bail out to recoup a first.

Hope for you would be a nightmare for me.

I am thrilled the Steelers aren't desperate enough to give up two number ones and $200+ million guaranteed to a QB like Jackson. The beating the guy takes is equivalent to a RB and he hasn't been able to finish a season since 2020. His post-season record is 1-3 with 3 TDs, 5 INTs and a passer rating of 68.3.

I am not saying that he's not a good player, he is, but I don't think he's worth the risk at the price he is asking and it appears the rest of the NFL, including the Ravens, agree.

Mock Draft Season Continues:

17. Joey Porter, Jr. - CB, PSU
32. Anton Harrison - OT, OK (could have gone Dawand Jones here)
49. Jack Campbell - LB, Iowa (Simpson gone)
80. Nathanial Dell - WR, Houston
120. Moro Ojomo - DL, Texas
235. Ricky Stromberg - C, Arkansas
242. Brenton Strange - TE, PSU (thought about QB here -- Malik Cunningham)

Lamar is a rare talent who can cover up a ton of warts. Not like this would ever happen anyhow. I’m just sick of how pathetic the offense has been over the past few seasons. Went from being a high power offense to Ralphie from the Simpsons.

More realistic hope is build a dominant team in the trenches and bring in an NFL caliber offensive coordinator. Maybe next season.

Signed LB Elandon Roberts and cut Myles Jack.

Simpson at 32 may be a done deal.
OJ? Their iLB are much better today than a year ago. If you dont think Holcomb, Roberts and Robinson are better than Jack, Bush and Spillane, you havent been watching football. There is no requirement to draft X and 17 and Y at 32 and Z at 49.....its best on the board, S, CB, iLB, oLB, DL, OL, WR could all be addressed with any of those 3 picks. Its really a great place to be, and now with Weidl there, i think more trust in the evaluation process, and he seems to understand OL and DL play/needs. Heck, maybe this is the year they trade out, and add multiple 1s and 2s for next year and still add depth to LB, CB and maybe TE or WR.

I dunno. Roberts looks to be an upgrade over Jack and Holcomb an upgrade over Spillane. That may be damning them with faint praise but incremental improvements are still improvements.

Also cutting Jack saves $8 million in cap space

Replacing spare parts with more spare parts will lead you back for more the next year. It's a never ending cycle unless you find another Farrior, which is rare when shopping at the thrift shop.

Everyone thought Jack was an upgrade as well last year. Also, Witherspoon, Wallace, and Jackson were supposed to be upgrades as well. We all know how that all worked out.

I never heard of Holcomb or Roberts before this week. So maybe I don't watch as much football as I used to. But from what I have read Holcomb had one good year and was hurt last season. Roberts will be on his third team and may be a better fullback than a linebacker. Robinson played in 2 games last year. Maybe they all are better incrementally at least than the 3 outgoing guys, but they will be using a top pick on ILB and based on their visits and dinners so far, my guess is Trenton Simpson from Clemson at #32.

Seems like no matter what they do its not good enough. Why bother with in, Rooney should sell the team to someone who will move them to Oklahoma.

Curious where they will spend this new $18MM from this cut and the Fitz restructure. Maybe there is a big signing out there about to happen.

$28 mil from Minkah, Mack, and Jackson III, but we signed (assumed 1st year cost from available details):
  • Patrick Peterson ($4.2 mil)
  • Larry O (pays $21.75 mil in first 2 years, $29 total, I'd assume a cap hit of $9 mil or less)
  • Demontae Kazee ($1.2 mil, rumored)
  • Nate Herbig ($2.5 mil)
  • Elandon Roberts ($2.5 mil, last 2 years was $2 and $2.75 mil)
  • Cole Holcomb (Less than $6 mil, $18 mil 3 year contract)
  • That's $25.4 million, though the cap hits for Larry and Cole could be several million lower.

Also, I think Cole was the Mack replacement, and Roberts is more a gadget/backup role. Cole wore the green dot for the Commanders and I think he'll do likewise for us. Roberts was used more as an OLB last year and I think he might pull double duty backing up Watt/Highsmith AND working as an ILB.

ILB is definitely still a draft need. I think based on the Herbig signing the Steelers won't focus on OG, but the rumors are that they were heavily recruiting Orlando Brown Jr but weren't willing to increase their guaranteed money high enough.
Draft needs remaining IMO: CB, ILB, DL, OT, WR. Would not be shocked if we double dipped at CB with this strong class and the Wallace/Witherspoon contracts expiring after this year.

Good summary post.

Yes, the ILB need is first and they've whiffed for years at it. Hoping those holes get filled with some quality.

i too really enjoy the mock draft simulators. i find them addictive. BUT, you are probably smart not to do any trading.

by relentlessly trading down on PFF, (never offering a trade that the site said had less than a 48% chance of being accepted), i got these silly results on my last 3 mocks.

I mean, in some of them he's getting 2-3 players currently being mocked by other analysts in the 1st round...

Did a recent 3 round mock using a simulator with no trades and got:
17. Jalen Carter
32. Nolan Smith
49. Drew Sanders
80. Jaelyn Duncan

This doesn't address CB at all in a very strong CB class, but even with the poor pro-day workout and the off field issues, Jalen Carter alone makes this draft ridiculous (though incredibly improbable). Getting value on Smith, Sanders, and Duncan is just icing on the cake. Addressing DL, OLB, ILB, and OT in the first 4 picks would make me happy (if it was these players), even if we miss out on CB.

Carter will be available at 17 if he is facing felony charges. Smith would be a great pick at 32, but not likely to get that far. Sanders is way too skinny to play mlb in Pittsburgh. Duncan's upside is Dan Moore.
