2023 Pittsburgh Steelers. Banged up team loses to Buffalo. Looking ahead to 2024 now (11 Viewers)

I am sure you all saw this by now, but I thought when I watched this reaction live (or when they showed it right after the TD) that this was an audible. Canada didn't even call the game winning play. Probably had a 2-yard run drawn up.

I am waiting on confirmation from the inside whether this was Canada or Pickett, but I do know that this video is circulating in the locker room . . . .
Post game Tomlin mentioned the TD play. He said something to the effect, the play wasn't designed to go there, but Ravens D lined up in cover zero so we took a shot. Implied that was an audible for when Ravens go cover zero.

I was wondering about his lack of expression/excitement when they showed that. He had the what the @@@@ just happened look.

The taking of a knee at the end of the game says it all. Tomlin is playing afraid
Huh? They don't screw it up, the game is over
They were always going to have 15 seconds or so left. Even if they run rather than take a knee, they get close to running it out, but they were too afraid
What are you talking about? ESPN play by play says they got the ball with 0:10 left.
He's talking about the series before. On third down they took a knee after taking a knee of the previous 2 plays. If they take the knee properly. They run the clock and kick the same FG leaving like 8 seconds left.

I don't agree but that's what he is referring too

They didn't need to run it, but you at least tell the QB to move around until someone is actually coming, then take a knee. Wipes out an additional few seconds per play. Either way, it was the penalty that made it more exciting than it should have been.

Austin still saying that Porter isn't a starter yet. WTF.

Also, don't think Canada is going anywhere even though we only scored 1 TD, 15 pts on offense. If there was going to be any change, it would be at the Bye. We might have a winning season this year, but can you imagine Canada leading a playoff winning Offense? Because I can't.

Increases the chance that Sullivan or Thomas is promoted after the season and we waste 3 more years.

Steelers lose ground on the bye week with the rest of the AFC North teams winning. The Browns win was particularly impressive although it took two missed FGs to win.

Canada running out of excuses to keep his job. Rooney can be cheap. Probably forced Tomlin to stick with Canada through the last year of his contract.

Diontae coming back helps. I wonder how much success the offense needs to extend Matt’s tenure. Biggest question, will the Rooneys stop with the meddling? Let the GM and Coach have control of personnel and coaching. This is the root cause of Pittsburgh biggest failures.

If the Steelers are winning they won't do anything this season. If they falter, Canada may get fired and an interim coach (internal) will be named, but not much will change.

I doubt that it is about money. The Steelers came in with a plan put forth by this coaching staff during the offseason and they aren't going to bring in an external OC and make major changes now.

When they didnt fire him after last season, we knew he was here all of this season. Steelers dont react like that, sometimes not at all. Real fear is going 9-8 again and Canada is back in 2024.

As for this week, Johnson is back and that will at least give 2 options at WR, and Friermuth is reportedly coming back this week too. So the "weapons" are there. But they need a running game to allow more of a passing game(McFarland is back). And that comes from the OLine. Dan Moore is back, interesting to see what they do with him. Harvin is back at punter too. Heyward is the last missing key piece.

So, seeing stories that the human turnstile Dan Moore back to getting 1st team reps and apparently the rookie will be back to the bench. No way these coaches can be watching the same games we are.

The Steelers have been known to lean on Vets long past when they "should". Sometimes it pays off, but feels like it's usually the wrong move.

If true, that’s very sad. Jones looked really good in his debut and now they want to stunt his development?

With this and Porter still not starting, I am losing faith. MAYBE they will let Porter see the field in Nickel now, and kick Peterson inside?

The Jones benching is likely related to Tomlin’s position that a starter should not lose his job due to injury. Mind you Moore is not a starter caliber player but that won’t get in the way of Tomlin’s stubbornness. I really hope they’re not going down a path of ruining Jones’s career but I’m fearing the worst.

So once again the Steelers win after appearing to be outplayed most of the game. And they’re 4-2. And yet people still want to fire Mike Tomlin. Are you guys expecting 6-0? This is a friggin miracle.

Offense looked much better. Actually pushed the ball downfield a bit.

Pickens and Diontae made some serious mental blunders. Embarrassing to see them taunting playing for one of the worst scoring teams in the league. Rookie Puka outplayed them both by a mile and showed more class. Tighten up

Diontae being back helped a lot. Pickett played well in the 2nd half. Broderick needs to be in there getting reps. He’s going to be a great one. Watt is the best player in the NFL. Period. I’m happy!

They didn't "appear" to get outplayed. For 3 quarters, they were outgained 330 to 110 and the Rams had doubled them up on time of possession. They were 3 truly awful quarters of football. TJ Watt being Superman, 2 missed field goals, and a missed extra point are all that kept the 4th quarter from being meaningless. A lack of discipline has been consistent on the team for a while now, and it almost cost them big time today.

It was one helluva quarter though. Hopefully a sign of things to come and not just a blip on the radar.

This isn't a good team yet, but 4 wins are 4 wins despite having the 23rd best point differential in the NFL. Maybe they can play better and the ugly wins matter at the end of the year. Wins are wins, but you can't win consistently in the NFL this way, at least not against the really good teams... which is why IMO they have some decent regular season success but get exposed if/when they make the playoffs.

Had to help playing a home game in LA too lol

Even I can’t piss on this win lol. Yes there is a lot to be uncertain about and they are definitely not a perfect team. But they are 1 game behind the KC frigging chiefs right now. Think about that. Pickett had a very good 4th Quarter. That’s the type of progress you want to see in a young QB.

Yes a good road win, but c'mon we all know that 4th down was a gift. These opportunistic wins are not sustainable, and that's why many of us want to see growth on offense. A couple of nice drives late, but that needs to be more consistent earlier. Can't depend on others' mistakes and refs each week.

LOL not pissing on the win, it was a fun win and I'll enjoy every win they get.

But regardless of record, this team isn't one game worse than the Chiefs right now. The Chiefs have a +73 point differential and the Steelers are at -24. That's more indicative of how the team has played but hopefully the offense can pick things up and take advantage of what looks like a somewhat lucky record so far. I hope the defense stops giving up so many damn yards... the sacks and turnovers are nice, but they've given up around 400 yards per game.... granted that's partially because the offense doesn't sustain drives very often.

The 2 teams playing on Sunday night are averaging over 400 yards of offense this year. The Steelers have not had a 400 yard game since Matt Canada was O coordinator lol.

I remember not so long ago when the Steelers were at 11-0 and the attitude of some cheerleader fans was the same, yet there were obvious signs the team was not a true 11-0 team. They ran out of luck that season and didn't have any answers while being exposed down the stretch and in the playoff loss.

This is a very fortunate team to be at 4-2 right now. They need to fix this offense because this is not sustainable. If that makes me a bad fan, who cares. Rather be that than a cheerleader.

Its now been 54 games.

I think they said the next longest active streak is 12 or 13 LOL. That's a truly ridiculous statistic.

But, our defense is giving up nearly 400 yards per game. Thank God for sacks, turnovers, and TJ Watt being a Steeler.

I like 4-2 also. But unless their play improves, it's just smoke and mirrors that's bound to reverse itself.

Woof. I figured it was bad, but geezuz. You almost have to TRY to be that inept. How have they not just lucked into one?

Observations from the game today,

1. Holy ish, can you ****ers take over a stadium. Those towels!

2. 110 yards of offense heading into Q4 and it was not at all surprising relative to how they looked. OL is the suck. And the commitment to Nojee, Pickett and Blame Canada is an eventual death knell.

I never called anyone a bad fan but it is a bit of a broken record: "Fire Canada, Tomlin sucks, Pickett/Harris/(insert name here) were terrible picks, etc." It is the same every week.

For several years the Steelers have been among the highest paid defenses and lowest paid offenses in the NFL so unfortunately this is how the team is built. It is frustrating to watch the offense struggle week after week but I don't see it changing in the short term. All we can hope for is the offensive line to show improvement (as they did last year) , Pickett to grow into a decent QB, and for God sakes stop with the $%@# stupid penalties!

In the meantime as bad as they are, they are finding ways to win. Of course it is not sustainable and we have already seen them get into holes they couldn't pull themselves out of but I'm going to enjoy the victories when they win. I know that in some eyes that makes me a cheerleader but I don't care.
Now someone hand me my towel: :towelwave:

This isn't correct.

This year, the Steelers have the 8th highest paid defense in the NFL, 9th highest as a percentage of the cap.

But it's not like they aren't spending any money on offense. They're middle of the pack in offensive spending. They have the 18th highest paid offense in the league, 3 spots ahead of the Eagles and 2 spots behind the Dolphins. They're spending fine, but they aren't creative or utilizing their talent well.

So you're saying the defense is in the top ten and the offense is in the lower half? ;) Most of the cap space on offense is the oline, two of which were FAs signed this year. If you're saying this group isn't pulling their weight you won't get any argument from me.

LOL yes, that's what I'm saying :ROFLMAO:

They're spending more than enough on offense. Just not on the right players and there are no innovative offensive minds on the staff to figure out how to use the talent they have. And now is the time they NEED to be aggressive, when they're not paying a franchise QB.

By the way... I know I'm critical of the coaching, but I enjoy the wins. I want them to win. The issue is that ugly and lucky wins do nothing except protect the coaching staff from decisions that need to be made for this team to get out of the playoff rut they've been in for over a decade. So to me, it's a double edged sword. If the team wins 9 games again (and with their remaining schedule that should be fairly easy) and the offense shows moderate improvement in the second half of the season, we'll get lines in the offseason about why they need to keep the status quo and continue to improve... but they clearly need a change in direction whether that starts at the top or that starts with the hiring of someone to take full control of the offense.

As we both know, Mike Tomlin is not going anywhere. I am okay with firing Matt Canada now but even if they did it will not change the personnel on the field or the playbook for 2023. The play calling might be different, and that could be a good thing, but it might also screw things up worse than they are as unlikely as that seems to some.

Barring some miraculous offensive turn-around in the second half of the season I do agree that Matt Canada should be gone in 2024 and a new offensive coordinator from outside the organization be brought in to make wholesale changes.
