2023 Pittsburgh Steelers. Banged up team loses to Buffalo. Looking ahead to 2024 now (13 Viewers)

Yup I’m officially done with the Pickett experiment. Go with Rudolph as the starter next year and see how the cards play out.
The Steelers lack of talent excuse is way overblown, especially on offense and especially compared to the AFC playoff contenders. It was poor play calling early and poor QB play until Rudolph got his shot.

The 3 games where Tomlin was dissmissive of Rudolph in favor of Trubisky are the only thing that prevented this team from safely being in the playoffs already. I can see why Mitch started once. But after he lost and continued to suck, he should've been pulled by halftime of the 2nd game instead of being given 3 games to prove his suckyness.

I know Tomlin will be given credit for the team winning 10 games. He deserves some. Glad they won and glad they kept playing hard. But his lack of awareness of the talent he had in his locker room is why we're waiting until tomorrow and that'll be lost on everyone.
And these are the things the blowhard ESPN media types just ignore.

2 sacks help TJ case for DPOY. Steelers get to 10 wins and possibly make the playoffs. His stats are better than Garrett or Parsons. Really hope he gets the votes.

Very low chance Micah gets it. Very high chance Myles gets it

Regardless of what happens from this point out, I’m ok giving Rudolph a shot next year.
Rudolph is an UFA, he may not want to return, especially knowing that Pickett will be the starter going into camp
Why do you think Pickett will be named the starter going into camp? He certainly hasn’t done anything to earn it. I would think the Steelers would be a good fit for Rudolph given the way the season has ended.

Cause he was a 1st round pick that lost his job due to injury. Not saying I agree but I guarantee he is going to get another chance as the starter and if you are Mason Rudolph do you really want to go through that again?

I think Rudolph should be the starter no matter what in 2024-25.

But since KP is a 1st round pick that is why most likely will be week 1 starter next season. If KP was a 4th rounder I think there’s no way he’s week 1 starter next season.

But how can you say that after this week? Pickett was healthy and Tomlin chose to start Rudolph with the season completely on the line. Yes I agree Pickett will get a shot but I believe Rudolph will be the front runner going into camp.

I think both guys will have a shot in camp and the better man will win out. This week has taught me that Pickett being a 1st round pick matters little to Tomlin (who just wants to win).

I have to agree. Rudolph should be given the first crack at the starter spot with Pickett having a fair shot in camp to win the job. If neither actually wins the job then Rudolph should be the default choice, until he has a stinker game and then from there, who knows? Plus maybe they pick up a project QB in the draft.

Garrett is a great player but every statistical category other than the Browns won 1 more game comes up in Watt’s favor. Pretty certain Watt had at least 1 tackle for loss.

I hear you guys saying there should be an open competition for QB next season. According to the rumors tossed around in this thread , Kenny is the owner’s choice and that (apparently) carries a lot of weight in the decision.

Some could make the argument that once Canada was fired the light came on for Pickett and had he not been injured he would have performed as well as Rudolph ( I am not make that argument, mind you, I think KP stinks).

Mason Rudolph can sign anywhere and may not want to come back to a situation where the cards are stacked against him, even if he out performs KP in camp and preseason.

Then there are the rumors of the Steelers having interest in Fields or Wilson (unlikely IMO but they are out there.

All I’m saying is Rudolph not under contract next season and there is no guarantee he’ll be back.

The playoff picture is pretty clear cut for the Steelers this morning. The need the Jaguars to lose/tie or Bills to lose.

Both are favorites to win and it is the likeliest scenario. The Dolphins already have clinched a playoff spot but can clinch the #2 seed with a win, otherwise they are the 6th seed.

Trevor Lawrence is a GTD and with the playoffs on the line I’m guessing that he plays. Otherwise CJ Beathard gets the nod for the Jags.

I’m expecting we will be on the outside looking in at the end of the day but you never know.

"The Neanderthal fan would look at Watt’s traditional box score stats and claim that Watt should be the league’s DPOY front-runner." ;)

Myles is the best player on the best defense. And he's never won it. Those 2 will influence the voters to lean towards Myles when the stats are close, which they are. I also like that writer's Crosby vote, he certainly should be in the discussion but since they have a losing record he won't be close.

I'm hoping for a Bills win and a Jags loss. The Bills are playing well and are likely the best chance to beat the Ravens. The Jags are reeling and will likely be an easy out for whoever plays them in the playoffs if they were to get in. I'm sure Vrabel will have the troops charged up today and it's in TN so there is a chance, slight as it is. Not holding my breath though and it seems likely the Steelers have played their last game of the season.

Garrett is a great player but IMO all this hype feels just a tad like going for a lifetime achievement award.

Garret has had 1 more sack than me over his his last 5 games. It’s a cherry picked stat but not DPOY like.

Miami is too decimated to have a realistic shot today barring a complete implosion by the Bills.

Depends on if Trevor plays and is healthy enough to function as he has in the past.

If he does play and he can function, Miami has a better shot of winning than Tennessee does, IMO. Miami still has their run game and they ran all over Buffalo the past two or three times they played them. They got away from the run in those games to their detriment.

They almost beat Buffalo with Skylar Thompson as QB last year in the playoffs. With Tua and Hill and their running game, they've got a puncher's chance.

If Beathard goes for Jacksonville, ignore everything I just said.

Yeah Watt supporters are Neanderthals while Garret is the guy that ripped a helmet off a guy and beat him over the head with it.

“Stats” like QB pressures are subjective and while it’s great to get pressure isn’t it better to actually get him on the ground?

In any case they are both excellent players, I don’t care which or if neither wins the award.

Yeah Watt supporters are Neanderthals while Garret is the guy that ripped a helmet off a guy and beat him over the head with it.

They're talking about which stats are being relied upon, with stats like actual sacks being stats that less-nuanced fans look at. I don't think it was about Garrett ripping Rudolph's helmet off. It was about which stats each sets of supporters are using.

That said, I was just thinking about this tonight without having read this thread up there. I was thinking that sacking the QB is a skill and that pressures don't tell the whole story. Call me a neanderthal, but the skill is getting the guy on the ground, not getting there and breathing on him violently.

But then PFN makes a great point about Parsons. He got double-teamed more than anybody this year and still had 100 pressures, way over what Watt and Garrett had. But Parsons has three less sacks than Garrett, and four less than Watt.

I don't know. I'd give the award to T.J. Watt based on having watched him play a few times this year and having watched Parsons a lot. Watt is just tougher against the run and does a really good job of stuffing everything. Parsons is pure pass rush.

Anyway, just my two cents.

Buffalo should win this easily but the Bills had more than a few clunkers this season. Let’s hope for one more

They lost to New England, so there's really nothing stopping them from having another clunker and blip on the radar. What you should hope for is Miami to get ahead or stay close and then for Josh Allen to start playing hero ball while Diggs pouts about the field. That's a scenario where I can see Miami winning. Miami can also win if Tyreek gets deep a time or two or Mostert and Achane are really healthy and they both run the ball.

In short, I think Miami is just a tougher out tonight than people think. Or maybe I've just talked myself into that. I don't know. Buffalo is 29th against the run, I hear.

Going into next season the big difference is that Mason bailed out the Steelers and got them potentially to the playoffs pending today's games. KP is well known to throw for 1/2 a touchdown a game. Regardless of being drafted in the first round he is absolutely horrible, and you could easily argue that he holds back George Pickens and the passing game. If the Steeler's want a mutiny of fans next year, then they will go with KP. It's obvious that the Steeler's are struggling at evaluating in house talent and drafts not naming the 2023 draft as one.

If THE Bills show up today, like when they manhandled the Cowboys I have no doubt they will win. If the team that scraped by the Chargers 2 weeks ago shows up they'll lose. Bills 31-20.

Funny thing about "stats" is Josh Allen's are better than Myles and fairly comparable to Watt's and if he were to have a really good day could surpass Watt, yet he's not in the conversation at all.

I think Mason should be the starter in week 1 next season.

But I think the most likely scenario is Trubisky is cut, Mason is resigned with Mitch’s money, KP starts week 1 with a short leash to Mason as the backup, and they draft a “high risk high upside” QB in the mid-rounds.

Miami is too decimated to have a realistic shot today barring a complete implosion by the Bills. Not happening. I’m counting on the upset in Tennessee. That’s a possibility.

I am not feeling either game going the Steeler’s way. Just a feeling and hope I am wrong.

Would argue, but I have Geico insurance. Know when I'm beat.

AFC North dominates.
Three of four teams in the post season and ALL four over .500, first time in over ninety years that has happened in NFL.
The North may not be done dominating.
It is possible that three of four AFC N teams will be playing in the divisional round in a couple of weeks.

So they say Watt has Grade 3 MCL sprain but was trying to go back in but that means it was a complete tear and likely done for 6 weeks.....
He shouldn't have been able to walk with a grade 3. None of this actually makes sense. I don't think we are getting the real story.

It was a grade 2.

Per Rapsheet:

From @NFLGameDay Preview: #Steelers star TJ Watt has a Grade 2 MCL sprain, sources confirmed after the MRI. As noted source @JJWatt first reported, no other issues. No surgery. But still a multi-week injury.

They need to add some new wrinkles on the game plan IMHO. They will face Mahomes, Allen, or Tua and each of them is a real QB , something they haven't faced in weeks. Also, each of those D's can control the line of scrimmage.

Dolphins or Bills? Think I'm going to have to root for the phins tonight. Rather go into Miami than Buffalo.

If Miami wins, Buffalo stays in Miami for next week. We would be in KC.

Yeah, didn't plug in the Miami win...

Didn't think Steelers could still move up to 6. Thought it was Buffalo and Miami playing for 2 or 6.
