2024-25 NBA Thread: ESPN ready to debate if Warriors blowing 3-1 lead to meager Rockets diminishes LeBron’s legacy (78 Viewers)

I'm going to have to take a huge L on my take on the Jimmy Butler trade. Ugh.

Maybe, let's see if it pays off this season. How long will Butler be on his best behavior?
They've gone from missing the play in to possibly hosting a first round playoff series. Even if they flame out in the playoffs and that last year of the Butler deal is a disaster, I think that's probably worth it for one more real run with Curry.

i fully recognize that i am succumbing to hot takery but i have been trying to think of any point guard that has changed the game as much as steph curry has i think magic yes bringing size to the position and he is clearly one of the guys in the all time greats discussion but who else even comes close take that to the bank brochachos
Big O maybe?
Disliked by teammates. Not to Rick Barry level, but…….

Whatever the spread is for tonight’s Denver/Lakers game, take the Nuggets.

Lakers down Luka, LeBron, Rui, Hayes, and probably DFS and Vincent.

Bronny is going to get some serious minutes tonight.

Do you know how point spreads work?
Yes, my point was whatever the point spread is won’t be enough. Thanks for checking though.
It's 15.5. say less.

Yo Mama guarantee is as good as gold in my book

It is 15. So.....while I hear you and might just tail this, the news is baked in. This is what a line would look like if Denver played Washington in Denver.

This is why I don’t gamble on sports.

I said it not long ago—but Denver and Jokic need to step up on defense if they don’t want to get bounced in the playoffs. They are a bottom 7-8 team in opponents points per game, they are bottom 7-8 in opponents field goal percentage, and they are horrible in defending the paint. The Lakers with half a squad scored 62 in the paint, 126 total points and consequently were in that game until the very end.

Never underestimate the whiteboy Knechtion. Reaves was looking like Luka out there. Shame they lost that in the last minute. On another note, Murray's game seems to be back.

Another big win for the Cavs. On the road, against Memphis, and playing without Mitchell.

The more I watch them, the more I am impressed with their depth. I don’t know how that will unfold when the playoffs shrink the minutes for role players but at least in the regular season, they are so balanced up and down the line up.

It's only money.

And your word. That is also in the gutter.

They are tough. Good combination of wings, guards and bigs. I feel like the Deandre Hunter pick up got really overshadowed by the really big name moves at the deadline. He really just melts into that team perfectly and I think he’s a nice upgrade from what Levert was.

I'm loving this team lately. Getting similar vibes to last year where I now think we can beat almost any team. Top 7 in the West are all pretty strong.
They have a ridiculously easy remaining schedule but have one more loss than Golden State and are 1-3 against them, so they have to lose two fewer games down the stretch to move past the Warriors (not that that's impossible). Luckily, the Lakers have a ridiculously hard schedule and no LeBron so it's likely to finish

5. GSW
6. Wolfs
7. Lakers

and they both avoid the play-in.

Then the Wizards beat Denver in Denver and I don't know to believe anymore.

Yes, Denver played yesterday but all their starters played heavy minutes tonight and Washington is fighting Utah for last and the Cooper Cup™. What a world.

I’ve been saying it for a while—Jokic and Denver have been playing pathetic basketball on the defensive end. Let’s not give them an excuse with the back to back thing. They played both games at home against really depleted or crappy teams. The Lakers played without like half of their squad (including Lebron and Luka) and Washington had 14 wins and had a 7-25 road record before last nights game. Washington is like the leagues 4th or 5th worst offensive team in regard to average points scored per game and they scored 126–which is what a depleted Lakers team scored against them the night before. As much as I like the Nuggets and Jokic—I have a hard time glazing them when they are effectively not putting in any effort on the defensive end. The only other potential playoff teams that are worse defensively than the Nuggets are the Bulls, Hawks and Grizzlies. Two of those teams are likely to be play in teams with losing records.

Have any of you guys started watching college ball before the tourney? I tuned into a few games during these conference tourneys and was surprised how old some of these players are. I assume it's NIL related with incentives to stick around but so many guys in their mid 20s. They could be storied veterans on my Rockets squad

That isn't how the lottery works. The three worst records all have a 14 percent chance to get the first pick.

Even after the win yesterday the Wizards have to make up three games on the Pelicans (and maybe four depending on the tie breakers) to lose any ping pong balls.

Rockets, Nuggets and Grizzlies all tied up at 43-25 in the West. Going to be an interesting few weeks with how tight all the seeding is outside of OKC.
The western conference playoffs are going to be very interesting. Memphis is hard to predict as they haven’t had too much time with their full roster this season. JJJ, Morant, and Bane have all missed a decent amount of time. Houston is a team that has the ability to be a pest. They have a defensive minded coach and they have a bunch of really good quick/athletic/young talent. They have also battled the injury bug. Again—a very good but also unpredictable team imo. I talk smack on the Nuggets defensive effort in this thread-but that’s not because I hate on them or don’t believe in them. I just think that there is no reason why they need to be or should be much worse than league average defensively. They have a nice mix of talent, size and quickness—and while I don’t expect them to be an elite defensive team—I do think that expecting them to be top 15-16 is beyond reasonable. With that said, I do think that they can turn it on defensively in the playoffs—and if they manage to even get close to league average—they are going to be a problem. Minnesota, Golden State and a healthy Laker team also have the ability to make some noise. I always thought that Minnesota had a deep talented team—but the first half of the season felt as if there were some cohesive issues in integrating Randle and getting Donte to a place where he could succeed. It seems as though they are working their way through some of their cohesive issues—and if they figure it out—you’re looking at a team that is talented and deep. The addition of Butler to Golden State has taken them up a few notches imo. When the Lakers got Luka—I thought that was a no brainer positive move for them in regard to their future—but I thought it would leave them with a flawed or incomplete roster for the remainder of this season. If they have their guys healthy for the playoffs—it wouldnt completely surprise me to see them make a nice little run during the playoffs as well. As you said—I think the seedlings and matchups will play a role—but also health in the case of several teams.

Will the nba really make the Mavs forfeit games rather than give them a cap exemption or allowing them to play with 7 if it comes to that?

Forfeiting sounds like the best option. Why even go through the motions and put fans through that? I had the unfortunate task of attending the Rockets v. Mavs game the other night. Mind you, I purchased these tickets months ago, at a premium, to finally see Luka play in person. I left before the 4th quarter

I expect the Wolves to climb with their favorable schedule as well.

Of course, but that's not nearly as entertaining as saying Cooper Cup™

Point is, they suck and have no incentive to win

:lmao:

There were a combined 20 players – 10 per side – from the 76ers and Mavericks listed on the overnight injury report. The following players are out for Dallas: Anthony Davis (left adductor strain), Dante Exum (left hand fracture), Daniel Gafford (right knee sprain), Kyrie Irving (left knee sprain/ACL tear), Dereck Lively II (right ankle stress fracture), and Olivier-Maxence Prosper (right wrist surgery). Brandon Williams (left hamstring tightness) is probable and Jaden Hardy (right ankle sprain) is doubtful, while former Sixers Kai Jones (left quad strain) and Caleb Martin (left hip strain) are both questionable.
The Sixers listed the following players as out: Adem Bona (left ankle sprain), Andre Drummond (left toe sprain), Joel Embiid (left knee injury management), Paul George (left groin soreness), Eric Gordon (right wrist surgery), Kyle Lowry (right hip injury management), Tyrese Maxey (lower back sprain/finger sprain), Jared McCain (left knee meniscus surgery), Kelly Oubre Jr. (right knee sprain), and Lonnie Walker IV (concussion).

Hope Grimes scores 80.

I agree. The refs were really bad in that game. There is a lot of social media buzz about OKC getting the Chiefs treatment--in other words getting all the calls (even though the FTA stat doesn't seem to support that argument). However tonight was a really bad look for NBA. The one ref had to have money on the game because he tossed Cade after calling 3 t's in a row. SGA got 10 FTs with 5 of them being tech FTs. The hostile act review by the ref against Detroit was just a joke.

What a crock.

Do you honestly believe there is some anti-Pistons sentiment that is disrespecting the young players on that team by not communicating with them?

That was his argument. It's conspiracy theory bullspit and once again a public and unfair fight against an opponent (the refs) who are NEVER allowed to protect or explain themselves. The lack of professionalism and disrespect shown to officials is the height of double standards and hypocrisy.

As a measly HS official, I say you, JB and every coach that thinks his team got "cheated" can go pound sand. I've been slandered by "friends" on Facebook after games and I will never respect someone's opinion of the job we do if they've never tried to do the job and then publicly attack us.

It's unprofessional chicken **** and I hope he gets suspended not just fined.

That and good luck all of you playing games without refs because we are a dying breed primarily for this public sentiment towards us. There are almost ZERO refs under the age of 30 where I'm at. Kids don't even get past a year or 2 anymore before they quit. We had 3 younger guys quit mid-season in my association.

You want to fix officiating, especially in the NBA, make the rules simpler, less subjective and drop the hammer down on the public displays of disrespect in-games.

The only one that should be suspended is Brian Forte.

While I agree with a lot of what you said, SGA is such a notorious flopper, and it makes it hard to defend NBA officiating when the constantly get fooled by the flopping of SGA and other players who pull that crap.
