2024-25 NBA Thread: ESPN ready to debate if Warriors blowing 3-1 lead to meager Rockets diminishes LeBron’s legacy (27 Viewers)

Jokic I saw had a quote about how they should try what they do back home when you suck which is you find the next paycheck has less money in it LOL love this guy

Tagging on to what I said last night, I think there is a big change coming. Fans want Booth fired, I think Booth wants Malone fired. I listened to a couple podcasts with Nuggets beat reports this morning and they are saying that the entire front office is fractured, Booth and Malone's relationship has continued to deteriorate since the title, the locker room is split because everybody knows who is either a Malone guy or a Booth guy and it is causing friction, and the whole team, from FO to players is frustrated with Murray. Realistically, I think the only two significant options during the season are either to trade MPJ (fans wouldn't be heartbroken but he is the only reliable shooter on the team) or to fire Malone. If they don't make a change this season, I think it will be a wholesale change in the offseason - Booth, Malone, MPJ, Murray all gone.

My hope is they can find a 2 or 3 for 1 trade involving MPJ where they take a slight downgrade on MPJ, but can get another consistent bench player that can shoot a bit. Detroit and Brooklyn seem like the most likely trade partners for such a trade.

Just your occasional Jokic stat update to brighten my day as the Nuggets continue to suck.

32.3 ppg (#2 in NBA), 13.6 rpg (#1 in NBA), 10.2 apg (#2 in NBA), 1.8 spg (#6 in NBA - also #3 in deflections per game), 33.3 PER (#1 all time), 13.82 BPM (#1 all time), .304 WS/48 (#1 in the NBA), 2.8 VORP (#1 in NBA) - all with .563/.506/.808 (.650 TS%) shooting splits.

He's doing all right this season.

Scottie Barnes went down with a foot/ankle injury and was repeatedly saying that he couldn't feel his foot. What a bummer for his season.

The NBA schedule really is crazy, anyone have any info about what goes into making it? You have back-to-backs, which really shouldn't exist anymore, and then you'll get a team with a random 3 or 4 days off in a row for no particular reason.

1. TV exec requests, ratings, etc
2. Other Arena obligations - e.g., San Antonio's rodeo, Chicago's circus, major concerts (e.g., Taylor Swift)
3. Shared sports obligations, mainly NHL (I guess I could have grouped this in #2)
4. The puzzle of how many times you have to play certain teams
5. Travel (annoying AF to go Boston to GS to Memphis or something so they try very hard to avoid that)
6. Avoiding the NFL (kind of a subset of #1 I guess)

I may be missing some, but these are the ones that actually came up that I remember on our "Broadcasting the Product" panel with a top exec each from NBA, NHL, and Jay Feely (LOL) at the GSB 5-10 years ago.

I think they mostly just try to screw over the Wolves as the top priority.

Come on, the Wolves do that to themselves enough that the NBA won't waste time on them. They need to focus on promoting the Lakers and Knicks, screwing over the Nets, Bucks, and Magic, etc.

NBA does a pretty miserable job with it's scheduling and TV rights IMO. They really make it a pain to watch local market teams

Example in Dallas:

For years, we had the stupid Bally Sports thing, which was only carried by the most expensive cable provider, or an overpriced Bally subscription

They finally went under. NOW we have an interesting viewing option set: You can watch on a local broadcast channel, which also isn't carried by anyone like YTTV or Hulu etc, or you can subscribe to MavsTV (which is exactly that, a price to watch all the games). The Mavs TV option is actually fairly reasonable.

No idea if the MavsTV thing would work, say, in OKC tonight or if it would be blacked out for whatever OKC regional rights holder has. But it's so far been way better than the past 5 years at least.

That's a good change. In Charlotte we are stuck with the glitchy successor to Bally Sports of FanDuel. I've watched so much more league pass than Hornets games this year. It sucks.

The schedule is currently a bit barren due to the NBA Cup. Each team initially had a 10-12 day stretch without any games scheduled, and the results of the group stage determined the limited games that had to be inserted in that span. I actually don't mind the way they do it . . . it gives fans the chance to get to an extra home game on the cheap compared to games that had tickets available since the schedule came out. I got tix for BOS/DET for way less than any other game, as they only went on sale a week before (even resale tickets were going for less than face value).

Yep, and they also have to build in some cushion for the NBA Cup games because they don’t want any of them to be on back to backs.

For the Blazer and Magic fans in here. The Ringer giving them some love:

Magic defense is a headache but they simply can't keep shooting worst in the league and expect to win when it matters.

I hadn't heard the rumor about Lavine to Orlando. I'm not totally on board with that but I also have no say in the matter.
Anfernee Simons would be a much better trade for them. Lavine is the slightly better player but Simons is on a better contract now, fits the rest of the Magic's timeline, and has more traditional PG skills to fit their roster better. It would probably take a first rounder and for the trade to be made a three way with KCP going to a third team and the resulting minor assets to the Blazers (Lakers for like a couple seconds and Russell? Bucks for some draft equity and some of their trash? Sixers if they could make the money work?).
Orlando needs to make a move. Not sure players like LaVine or Simons are it though.

Magic are just womping teams. We love to see it.
Magic on TNT?

In the words of Kevin Garnett:

ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!
Congrats? Orlando can't have nice things.

after a horrific start that made me question our front office and coaching staff the bucks have crawled back to 11 and 9 so i eat some humble pie here they are fun to watch in spurts and i guess i owe doc and horst an apology i hope that they will forgive me take that to the bank brohans
Giannis and company back to Vegas again. 🫎

I really don' care about the NBA Cup at all. Does anyone really?

I didn't think I would but I really like it. The players have bought in and want to win this thing. It works in soccer so glad it's translating here. They do need to improve the scheduling because I often have no idea what the hell is going on or when the cup games are but other than that it's a W.

The only way I know is when my eyes are straining to see the game due to the color of the floor.

Jokic is now #3 on my all time list in case anyone cares
I do. I think inside the top 10 is bold but not crazy but top 5 is too soon.

For current players I go off of the idea "what if they never play another game." No way is Jokic above like #8 with only 1 ring and 3 MVPs in 9.5 seasons. He has closer accolades to Moses Malone right now than any of the top 10 guys.

Now if you are going by greatest talent and greatest 4 year run? Sure he's up there and one could argue top 5.

Off the top of my head, I have Jokic around 12-15, still behind the Shaq, Duncan, Curry, Olajuwon and Kobe tier.

So Jimmy Butler wants to be traded. He wants to go to either

1. Dallas - would have to give up both Gafford and Washington to make the money work (I'm assuming they don't want to trade kyrie).

2. Houston - They have a lot of Nets picks, promising prospects, and a few big enough contracts to make it work. They could do it by trading Brooks, Jeff Green, and Jock Londale along with a lesser prospect (Whitmore or Eason). They also have Steven Adams at $12m expiring. Lots of ways to make it work without much long term impact to Houston if they want to upgrade from Brooks to Butler.

3. Golden State - Have pretty much all their own picks, but would have to include either Wiggins or Draymond along with Payton and Melton.

Basically this works for Houston if this is where they want o shoot their shot. They have the ammo in terms of picks, prospects, and big contracts. I don't know that I would do it for Butler, I'd probably wait for the next guy, whomever that might be.

Could Houston be waiting to see if something gives in Phoenix for a Durant deal? Houston owns a future Phoenix first, yes?

Of course Durant may want to pair with Wemby for a ring.

They've been mentioned a lot in these Butler rumors but I think he make more sense for a team like Dallas or GS. Not really sure how adding an aging vet who can't shoot 3s helps Houston's cause. That being said, I'd be willing to gamble and comfortable giving them some combo of Cam or Jabari with a pick or two mixed in.

Note: Tari is not a lesser prospect. He's one of their brightest. Rockets have lots of PHX picks in the late 2020s, not the Nets.

What about a straight up trade of Kawhi for Butler?

Denver media has been talking about MPJ + Nnaji but that would murder their already awful three point shooting.

What about a Minnesota return? Randle and DiVincenzo for Butler might make both teams better.

OKC has the ******** assets to make it work even if Miami doesn't really want the matching salary - Hartenstein and Wiggins plus like three mediocre 1sts works. Miami could flip Hartenstein for positive value elsewhere (make it a three team trade to LAL or Memphis or even hold him for the offseason).

Does anyone understand the cap rules around trades now? I've read that since the Wolves are into the second apron they can't aggregate salaries this year, meaning the whole Randle + DDV package is irrelevant. I've also read that they aren't under those penalties until the offseason, meaning they could package salaries together. So confused.
