2024-25 NBA Thread: for the second time, somebody in Dallas hits low percentage shot that leads to a generation of conspiracy theories (15 Viewers)

Adrian Wojnarowski doesn’t want NBA fans to call Bronny James going to the Lakers 'nepotism'.

“I don’t want to hear these charges—people talking about nepotism. The NBA is full of nepotism: the ownership level, front offices, coaching. I don’t want to hear it all of a sudden because Bronny James’ father plays for the Lakers. It is rampant in this league.”

lol he basically said "this is nepotism, but this is common so it's cool"

The "everyone did steroids back then!" argument.
I read it more like, nepotism is common and has been happening all along, so it's a bit weak to be complaining about it just in this particular case. I'm not saying I agree with him.
I mean, just look at the ownership group of the team that drafted him (along with other team owners). Nepotism? Gasp!

How many brothers of star players have been taken to appease or attract those players - Giannis x2, Boozer, Durant, Milsap, etc.

Why are you so mad about this. How do you think the Lakers owner got the team. Her daddy had juice.

In terms of opportunity cost for this somewhat stunt drafting of Bronny, Lakers 2nd round picks this century:

Luke Walton
Marcus Douthit
Ronny Turiaf
Von Wafer
Cheikh Samb
Sun Yue
Marc Gasol
Joe Crawford
Patrick Beverley
Chinemelu Elonu
Devin Ebanks
Derrick Caracter
Darius Morris
Andrew Goudelock
Chukwudiebere Madaubum
Ater Majok
Robert Sacre
Ryan Kelly
Anthony Brown
Ivica Zubac
Isaac Bonga
Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk
Talen Horton Tucker
Max Christie
Mojave King
Bronny James

Seriously, I didn't just make up some of those names either.

You'd like to think they'd hit more often on 2nd rounders, but the reality is, you're probably not getting an NBA quality player in the 2nd round most of the time anyway.

Yeah - I was going to mention Max Lewis (last years pick) probably played like 10 minutes last year.

Meanwhile season tickets for the South Bay Lakers are already sold out.

Summer league will be crazy - just like in Lonzo’s first year.

Like why do yall think Thanassis is on the Bucks?

My problem was the process, not the result.
Do you have a problem with players directing where they land by not working out for other teams? That happens all the time too - like with Sarr and Holmes, to name a couple of probably many just this year.

No because teams could draft and trade them.
I guess I’m not seeing the difference other than the player name and agency.

“I will forever question the integrity of (checks note) PJ Hall and his agent (squints) ProMondo for forcing his way to the (wipes glasses) Nuggets, who didn’t even have a pick to use!!!”

Pretty crazy to have a father son duo in the NBA, regardless of how you feel about how it happened.

I’m happy for Bronny given where he was just six months ago health-wise. The pressure will be crazy but it’ll be fun to watch.

It is a good story but a little too orchestrated for my taste. Part of me hopes JJ grows a pair and sends his a** to the G-League.
I’d be shocked if he doesn’t play in the G League, if only to get reps while he sits on the big league bench. They did that with their first rounder last year.

From my perspective, the bigger issue with the Lakers taking Bronny is it likely means they're about to give a 3 year max deal to LeBron. I get that he's earned it based on his body of work, but he's also saying he's focused on winning another championship, and I can't see those two things co-existing.
As a Laker-hater I've been pretty happy with their offseason even if I didn't like Knecht falling to them.

It could have been worse. They could have traded for Trae Young or something like that.

I know hitting on second round picks doesn't happen often, but here are some recent ones that worked out: Jalen Brunson, Malcolm Brogdon, Nikola Jokic, and Khris Middleton. Fifteen second round picks went on to score 15,000 points (Jokic will be next). Alex English is the only one to break 25,000 (and ranks 22nd in most points scored).

I'm talking about sending him there and never bringing him back. F you and your Daddy

The Magic traded pick 47 to NO for 2030 and 2031 second round pick swaps.

More importantly, that was the only second round pick that had been held by its original team. Every single second round pick in this years draft was traded at some point.

His scouting report by The Ringer has so many of the under-athletic white big man tropes. It's fantastic. Hustle. Feel. (Those two are in the graphic) . Fundamental. Active. Slow-footed.

PLUSES
  • Elite screener who sets fundamental picks at different angles to spring shooters open, whether it’s off the ball or a pick-and-roll.
  • Thrives in handoff actions because he can make smart decisions as a passer, dribbler, or shooter. If the handoff transforms into a ball screen, he’s good at rescreening into a roll to the rim or popping up for a 3.
  • As a career 78 percent guy from the line at Clemson, he has good potential. Though he’s made only 32.6 percent of his 3s, he has soft touch from the midrange and the line. It’d be surprising if that number doesn’t go up.
  • Fundamental defender who shows a good feel for positioning. He rarely makes mistakes. And he’s an active help defender.
MINUSES
  • He’s right-hand dominant as a ball handler. Improving his left would make him far more dynamic in creation situations from the elbows and post.
  • Undersized for his position, which affects his ability to make a significant impact on the boards and when defending the pick-and-roll.
  • Slow-footed defender who needs to improve significantly on the ball to fit into a switch-heavy scheme. Because he’s not a great rim protector either, he doesn’t have a distinguishing defensive skill at this stage.

Not sure if this is supposed to be sarcasm, but some actual good NBA players on this list. That has to be a higher than average hit rate.

Way higher than average.

Wolves traded Wendell Moore to Detroit along with the 37 for #53. Hopefully he can get some run in Detroit. Wasn't ever able to put it together with the Wolves and there's no more roster space for him.

Dallas announced today that they have acquired the draft rights to the 51st overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft Melvin Ajinça from NY in exchange for the draft rights to Ariel Hukporti (58th overall pick in 2024), the rights to Petteri Koponen (30th overall pick in 2007) and cash.

The white guy tropes always give me a laugh i.e. deceptively fast, scrappy, high basketball IQ, great fundamentals, gym rat, etc. After the draft everyone was comparing Reed Sheppard to Mark Price or Jimmer Fredette. Why not Chauncey Billups or Steph Curry?

He has been compared to Steph curry largely based on his physical profile

Don't think the trade had anything to do with roster spaces. They saved a few million bucks by trading him away

Agent Rich Paul is calling teams and telling them NOT to take Bronny James. Or he'll go play in Australia. 😆

I would buy a second round pick just to test that theory.
No you wouldn’t. Klutch has a ton of talent. If you ever want to sign one of them again you gotta play ball.
Teams that play that game are foolish. 99% of players go where they can get the most money.

Treat players, coaches, and staff with respect and run a professional organization. Do that and you'll be able to hire, and retain, good people. Do that and the right types of winning players will be much more likely to be on the roster via draft, trade, and free agency. Appeasing agents is a fool's errand.

That's good to hear. Kurt Hinrich was another popular comp.
