2024-25 NBA Thread: for the second time, somebody in Dallas hits low percentage shot that leads to a generation of conspiracy theories (29 Viewers)

As a Denver fan I am glad LA drafted him. The dysfunction that is going to fall upon the Lakers is going to be glorious to watch.

Bron has picked his coaches, picked the FA's, now picked this draft pick. Do any of you believe that he won't start complaining if Bron Jr. isn't getting any playing time? I mean how is the 11th/12th guy on the bench (assuming he is making the roster) going to get much playing time with the 1st unit unless Bron starts demanding they be on the floor together? I can see a token play in a blow out game, but if he wants this to be a regular thing, that is going to ruffle some feathers with the other players and alienate the coaches.
The problem with people blaming James when things don't go well is they give him no credit when they win. I mean, if he has so much say and it is his fault when they lose because he picked the players and coach, then he should get extra credit for the years they won championships because he supposedly picked those players, too, right?

Exactly.

I get that many dislike James, but the lengths some go to in order to discredit him is wild. I feel like it's a 21th century thing as he is not the only (potential) GOAT that gets an unusual amount of hate from many. I was never a Tom Brady fan, but the fact that he still got booed a few weeks ago when announcing is sad. Most greats like that usually get the legacy cheers from people once they are done playing (except maybe in the city of their biggest rival when they played, for example), but the hate stays strong with many.

DeMar DeRozan’s free agency will be an interesting one to watch. Apparently the Bulls offered him nearly $80 million over two years in April but DeRozan wanted three years and turned it down. That original offer seems to be off the table now and DeRozan is headed towards unrestricted free agency tomorrow.

Whether the Bulls want him back at all is questionable. Arturas Karnisovas hasn’t said much about the direction of the team although he has mentioned “making changes” and that they are “considering all options”. The Giddy-Caruso trade seems to point towards focusing on the future more than the present. Certainly it makes sense for Bulls to at least do a mini-rebuild. They aren’t going anywhere with their current collection of players plus their first round pick goes to the Spurs next year unless it's in the top 10. Also, they would be in the luxury tax if they re-sign DeRozan for big money, can’t trade Zach LaVine, and they bring back Patrick Williams. They don’t want that so something has to give.

The thing is, what options does DeRozan have? I don’t think any team will have interest in using lots of cap space on him. Maybe a sign-and-trade could work somewhere. Otherwise, he might have to take a mid-level exception offer or bargain his way back to the Bulls for a much lower salary.

There have been a lot of indications the free agent market is going to be tight, with various players re-signing or opting into deals we would have thought were under-market a couple of months ago. The 4-5 teams with space don't seem, based on current reports, inclined to splurge on decent but not great players. It seems that the OKC's and Orlando's of the world are rightly freaked out about having a guy like Monk/Russell/Derozan/Thompson on the books at $20+ million in 2-3 years when their young players are due for raises, which would put them in second-apron territory. DeRozan seems like a better candidate than most for a short term, big money deal, but I agree he's probably going to regret turning down that extension.

Bulls are an absolute **** show.

Team should have been dismantled years ago when the guys had value. They were a better and more fun to watch with Coby/Ayo/Caruso last year. Iso ball with DeRozan / Lavine 🥱

I agree the only way DeRozan sees that type money is with Bulls and their infatuation with him to that level

I'm probably a sucker, but I would enjoy watching them next year if the got rid of the vets and gave Giddy and Coby White the keys.

Was a really tough decision though selecting to play with Wade. I think Wade deserves a lot more credit really overall.

And I do want to just say for the record that Lebron is 100% an all-time great. Not my #1 but there is certainly a very legit argument for it. And anyone having him outside of their top 5 or even potentially 3 is just a hater. I was rooting for him in Cleveland and Miami — but he seemed different to me when he went to the Lakers.

I get it. And if you don’t want to give him credit for Miami he still won titles at two other places. So if you want to criticize him for his GM work with the Lakers (fair) he did win a title there and in his second stint at Cleveland.

For the record, I HATE that he is going to re-sign in La and ride out the career with that mid team. He’s my GOAT and I’d love to see him in one more finals at age 40 or whatever. Seeing him being happy with this when we could get another legendary finals appearance at Philly or Dallas or whatever theoretical team that could take him on - it sucks.

Absolutely

Id roll with Giddey/White/Ayo/Pat Williams (if reasonable deal)/Terry/their new draftee. If the team is awful, fine. You can keep adding parts to it. No more of this adding players and still having an iso ball team built around DeRozan/Lavine.

I don't know how many more years they need to see this is team as constructed is going nowhere. Ball last played, what 3+ years ago (?)..... literally the last time they were an above .500 team.

There's nothing worse in sports than building around an old mediocre team.

I kinda like that he is going to see it through with LA. He has done the team hopping enough in his career. I like the father son duo to end the career

So is Trey Young next or does this mean he stays? They are too good as is to tank.
They finished with the 10th worst record last year and just traded away their 2nd best player. They don’t have to try too hard to be bad

They did just get the first pick in the draft though. A lot depends if Risacher is ready.

Still crazy to me they'd dump Dejounte for that after giving up so much for him. Guess this is typical Atlanta Hawks operating procedure.
Yeah. The Young/Murray experiment was clearly not working out though.

It’s certainly a nice ending to his career, I just keep thinking how electric one more finals with him would be.

I’ll believe it when I see it, but there a multiple reports saying LeBron would be willing to take less money to allow Lakers to use the full MLE.

Lakers are hard capped at the second apron and would be at close to or over that level (assuming LeBron re-signs, Reddish opts in, and Christie is re-signed) with 15 players before an MLE signing. Lakers will have to do a trade or two to open things up to use the MLE.

LeBron could likely map out a path to another Finals appearance. He’s a billionaire and could afford to play for the league minimum. That way, they could figure out a way to bring in another max contract guy. That will never happen, but if he really wanted a better shot at another title, that would be the best way to facilitate it.

Agreed. I am sure he still wants to win, but I think it's clear that he is fine with finishing out as a Laker and playing with his son.

12 Conference finals. 10 NBA finals (8 in a row). 4 Championships.

We all should be so bad at our jobs

It's because he has a legitimate argument as the greatest NBA player of all-time. Jordan lovers can't handle that, so the look to tear him down in any way possible and actively root against him (and his kid). I mean, if Lebron gets another title (granted it is unlikely imo) it suddenly becomes very hard to argue against him as #1.

I believe the players union is 100% against taking undermarket contracts, such as Lebron taking a vet's minimum because of the precedent it sets or something. I can't really back this up with anything but I do believe I remember reading something like that.
Yeah, the haircut he’d take at most would be a salary in th high $30Ms. And I’m sure he’d only agree to something like that if the player signing to the full MLE was also taking a significant haircut (like Klay or Darozan). He’s not giving up $15M+ a year for a Gabe Vincent-type player. “Hey LeBron, if we pay you $20M less this year, we can sign Valanciunas.”

I read that Isaiah Hartenstein really wants to stay with the Knicks. He is very happy with his situation, the city, with Thibs and with his teammates. The Knicks are strapped cap wise so they probably can't keep him at his market value.

He supposedly mentioned that he would be willing to sign for a lower salary--and he got immediate pushback from players across the league, the union and several agents.

The edict is always: you never leave money on the table. Never.

It's interesting, because Naz Reid signed an extension during this season that was definitely under what he could have gotten if he had gone to free agency. I suppose signing an extension with your current team during the season is significantly different than when you're on the open market like Hartenstein. Seems to be a player should be able to sign wherever makes him happy, even if it's for less money. Also Hartenstein should be able to stay witih the Knicks because they're in the East and otherwise he'll probably sign with someone in the West like everyone else does.

Agreed. So many are in the tank for Jordan as the GOAT that they will look for any reason to tear down James. Some Patriots/Brady fans are already doing the same thing with Mahomes because they seem his as a threat to Brady's GOAT status.

Same can be said both ways. We have had people in here saying Jordan couldn't play in today's league, he played against gas station attendants, and his finals competition stunk.

The worst are the people that don't see that they are 1a and 1b and it really is preference on who is better and the people that think LeBron or Jordan do no wrong.

As if there wasn't enough reasons to dislike Embiid.

We know it didn't happen in Denver though, he doesn't go there.

He should have played better defense.

Also, I don't have any problem with this. Maybe because I can 100% see Ant doing it (not the bouncing the ball of his face part, but dunking on some dork playing pick-up would be 100% on brand for him). Then he'd probably give him his shoes and autograph them.

yea no problem at all with this. That dude that got dunked on has got a way better story than just "I played a pickup game with Embiid"

So I'm now reading a lot about Lebron taking a pay cut so the Lakers can get Klay for the MLE (if he agrees to a lower than market contract). I know there's a lot of "Klay is washed" stuff, but if his job is just to shoot I think he's going to be ok, and that would pretty much be his role on LA. With D-Lo opting in, if they can somehow trade him for a halfway decent center am I crazy or are they going to be a contender? They're pretty bare for picks to attach to Russell (although I think they can trade any of them starting in '29), but they have young guys in Christie and Hood-Schifino that might interest someone.

If they offered Russell (expiring), Christie, and a couple of seconds to Detroit for Isaiah Stewart and salary filler, would the Pistons take that? Or the Wizards for Bagley? Capela from Atlanta? Vuc from Chicago?

Lots of options. They can actually cobble enough salary together to get Ayton if things get really crazy and the Blazers are willilng to accept a 1st rounder more than 5 years out like the Spurs did with the Wovles in the Dillingham trade.

NOTE: I'm not 100%, or even 60% sure of all the new salary rules so it's completly possible none of this is legal.

The guy is worth over a billion…..he can play for the minimum if he is so concerned.

My second greatest player of all time.

But dudes……come on. Lol. MLE hahaha. Guy should take the minimum if wants the team to have flexibility. I mean come on.

Another big benefit if LeBron takes enough of a cut to get the Lakers below the first apron, besides getting the full MLE, is it opens up all the stuff too - receiving sign & trade players, aggregating salaries, taking on more salaries than they send out, etc. Makes trading a whole lot easier.

lol damn, not sure if you're fishing or just desperate to continue your tired and continuous 'i hate Embiid' posts, but this is a massive stretch if you're using this as a reason to dislike him

Bet those guys loved this and will remember it forever.

Like someone else mentioned, Players union absolutely would not like this and it wouldn't be a great look.

I’ve assumed that PG would flirt with other teams but end up re-signing with the Clippers. Is that still the most likely scenario?
I don't think we really know based on the current reporting. Last I heard the Clippers were holding firm on not exceeding Kawai's contract (3/150). There was new reporting this morning that the Warriors tried and failed to trade for him with the intention of giving him the full 4-year max. That seems to indicate the market is out there for giving him the full max and the Clippers will need to suck it up and deal with it if they want to keep him.

That’s too bad…..because Lebron has put in his time where IMO he should be able to do whatever he wants contract wise within the rules of the CBA.

I mean it’s a free market place right? He wants to sacrifice for his “team” he should be free to do so.

Most guys won’t. But again it’s within the rules.

Anyway.

I don't care about the dunk, but really throw it off the kids face?

Everyone hates Embiid except 76er fans, this isn't about me.

What players did he pick in Miami and what coach? How about Cleveland?

I remember this guy making a pretty darn important shot in one of those Miami championships.

MILWAUKEE LeBron James waited and waited for Ray Allen near midcourt on Thursday night, waited for an embrace. These had been just a few minutes, but James still was biding time. He leaned left to right, his arms folded, and impatience grew. Finally, the two hugged, whispered into each other s ears and marched into the locker room with the Miami Heat's 3-0 series lead over the Bucks in the first round.

Waiting out these several minutes was nothing for James nothing compared to the years of recruitment it took to convince Allen to sign with the Heat last offseason. Even when James and Allen had been playoff rivals, an offseason dialogue existed. Let's join. Let's join. Let's join, James would tell Allen, then with the Boston Celtics. And each year, James' subtle pitch would fall short.

Only Allen had come around now, and he sent James a message over the phone last July that sent LeBron into excitement in his Las Vegas summer camp:

The time is now.

The wait was over. Playing with James was always an attraction for players, but without a title, without Miami, he'd never brought along an established player like Allen with plenty of talent and production left. Five three-pointers later in the Heat's 104-91 Game 3 win, Allen surpassed Reggie Miller's playoff record 322 three-pointers over 10 postseasons. Five three-pointers later, and a Celtics' first-round elimination appearing imminent, Allen again validated his decision to join James and these Heat.

For the Heat, a legitimate road test won t come in the first round, when the most hostile challenge put forth from the Bucks crowd will assuredly be a jumbotron video that mocked James and Chris Bosh. With Dwyane Wade scoring just four points and dealing with a forearm injury which won t be an issue, he said, after he receives treatment heading into Sunday's closeout game Allen poured in 23 points and found himself given shooting room repeatedly Thursday. This is the beauty, the ease, of playing with James.

This is what we've been talking about for a while, James said. I've always tried to be in [Allen's] ear. I knew what he was able to do against me in the past and I knew that threat could add another dimension to our team that we haven t had in our first two years.

He seemed like he had a fresh start, a breath of fresh air, being part of our franchise.

As far as reluctance goes, Allen has none playing behind Wade. There is no feeling slighted by his coach, no battling a young guard like Avery Bradley for stature. Mostly, Allen knows he's wanted again, and Erik Spoelstra reminds that to everyone within the Heat s locker room, everyone outside it. We don t take him for granted, he said.

In the end, the Celtics took Allen, his shooting, his tireless preparation techniques that have been absorbed by James for granted. From the start, the Heat made clear he wouldn't feel that way again. Back with the Celtics, Allen's value began to debilitate. With the Heat, his pedigree and experience are always fresh. James gives him respect and praise at every turn. Wade believes that Allen bails him out of shooting slumps.

This team, these guys truly, truly love each other, Allen said. Whether you re on the floor or on the bench, we're always trying to find a way to help. There's no animosities, no egos out there.

As Allen walked out of Bradley Center late Thursday, he smiled with family members near the court, pointing out how these rims feel so old, so familiar, to him. Most of his teammates were already long gone back to the hotel, but Allen took his family from outside the locker room to courtside, soaking in the beginning of a playoff run late in his career.

James waited and waited in his recruitment for Allen, waiting for a response to the pitches he has made over the years. The possibility started out as friendly, subdued offers, but it always stayed with Allen. When his career with the Celtics deteriorated, Ray Allen finally came back to LeBron James with the message both men wanted, and, yes, the time is now.

He did and there is one, but his list of guys he recruited that failed is a lot longer. If he let the guys in the front office do their jobs and the coaches do their jobs, I believe he would be the unquestioned GOAT and would have probably 6 + titles.

Paul George meeting with Orlando! @Capella @GOB
It’s happening!!!1!!

I still think he signs with Philly. They’d be closer to a championship with him. But maybe 4 years with Paolo is enticing.
PG13's wife just followed Joel Embiid's wife on social media. As much as I cringe even forwarding that information here, it's sadly more of a precursor to player movement that most of the crap we all read from league sources.

Basketball wise, Paul George to the 76ers makes the most sense.
