2024-25 NBA Thread: Stephen A leading ESPN’s draft coverage by yelling about players he’s never heard of until now (108 Viewers)

You really are unhinged on the Tatum thing, but this is also unnecessary.

Kerr may not be the greatest coach ever, but that doesn't mean he isn't a good coach. How many coaches who won 4 NBA titles and a COY award were not good coaches? I can't think of any. The NBA named him one of the top 15 coaches in its history.

And, sure, he was a role player in his playing career... his playing career in which he averaged about 17 minutes per game in over 1000 games... and shot the highest 3 point percentage in NBA history... and played a useful role for 5 NBA champions.

This is a bizarre string of posts for you, given you are normally one of the most level-headed posters in these threads.
Occasionally randomly goes off the deep end. Hope he's okay.

They were a 15 pt favorite and would have lost without Curry shooting incredibly well while Serbia fell apart. It was too close in a game against players who were far less talented.

Just "they won" isn't the bar when you have 12 All-NBA players and about 10 future HOFers on your team. Kerr did not do a good job of coaching them. The players just went out and won the games but little to no credit belongs with Kerr's rotations.
If Tatum played even 1 minute in those 2 games, Team USA doesn't even win a medal this year.
That makes no sense

EXPLAIN IT THEN!!!!
This isn't hard.

Kerr decided he was going to run the USNBT the way a coach runs an NBA team. Especially with the shorter games you don't need to go deeper than 7-8 players in your usual rotation. The US coaches don't think Tatum is one of the 7-8 best players on the team AND he doesn't fill a particular role that isn't already filled by someone better at that role.

The conspiracy stuff is bonkers.

Were the coaches also trying to eff up the T-Wolves?

I’m talking about Jayrod thinking Tatum’s lack of playing time had something to do with the Celtics.
EXPLAIN IT THEN!!!!

Tatum didn't make a single jump shot the entire tournament. Now that's impressive.
What did he take 6 total? Like less than 2 per game in the 4 he actually played?

Peyton Pritchard missed his first like 15 shots in the Finals. Do you think he is a bad shooter? Guys getting pauper minutes struggle to score consistently. Shocking take.
I explained it. Scroll up a third of the page.
So you agree with me then. Kerr had some ulterior motive because ZERO minutes makes no basketball sense.
Tatum had at least 3 minutes.

And before everyone is all "FIBA is different" or "he wasn't a good fit", ALL of the top players in the Olympics play in the NBA. All of them.
This is the crux though. He wasn’t a better fit than KD or Lebron and while he is better than Booker, Booker just shot lights out.
How do we know this? He never had a chance to prove it and all signs (2020 Olympics & subsequent NBA seasons) point to him being great.
The Olympics are about winning, not about giving a fragile superstar minutes so he can "prove" he belongs. Everyone on the team is obviously great - you don't make the team without being so - but it feels like some of you are missing the point. The point was to win. Getting hung up on who got minutes and who didn't is silliness.

No, "they won" is the bar. Would they have gotten bigger medals if they had won the last two games more convincingly? Shinier ones?? Nope. Whether you win by 1 or by 40, winning is the goal. This ain't college football.

I am not a big Kerr fan, but I won't quibble with the decisions he and his coaching staff made, as you have to deal with the biggest stars and A LOT of ego. It's almost an impossible task to undertake, but they were smart and realized that trying to placate every player and giving them all equal or significant minutes was not the way to go.

Just one more reason they should actually have a USA Basketball coach and infrastructure, and not just pull 3 good NBA coaches every time. Even the Coach K thing was better.

We have a major coaching and gameplay disadvantage every single time we get to international play.

Windhorst had what i thought was a reasonable take on this... where were Tatum's minutes going to come from?

ahead of Durant? Lebron? AD? Adebayo, i guess, but he's an unselfish, multi-faceted lineup fit that may be a better FIBA player

maybe Booker? but as we saw Booker was willing to do whatever he was asked to do and word from US camp is that apparently Tatum wasn't willing.. or wasn't able.. to do the things that Booker did for this team.

the coaches see these guys every day and made decisions based on who was playing well, who the team was facing and which players fit best where.

Peyton Pritchard wouldn't have gotten any minutes on this team either. ;)

TBF, Pritchard has been, uh, busy this summer.

Yep. It's so reasonable it could be called analysis and not a take

Guy not being likeable is not the same as not being good at basketball.
Nobody said he’s not good at basketball. He’s a top 10-15 player in the world. But that’s not not good enough to crack the US rotation.

better all around player for the past 3 years than ANT, Bam, Jrue, Booker and DWhite
He’s not better than Ant or Booker, a lot of us knew that and that was decided the last two weeks. He’s certainly not better than LBJ and KD and they absorbed a lot of those wing minutes.

He’s better than White but you could argue the Celtics didn’t really take off until they got Jrue. I’d still say Tatum is better than him but not for what team USA needed.
I actually totally disagree that he's not better than Ant or Booker. He's better than both. Were I starting an NBA team tomorrow, I'd take him over both.

But he's not a better shooter and he's not a better big man or wing fit for Team USA in crunch time than LeBron, Bam, AD, or Durant. He wasn't competing for playing time with White or Booker or Jrue or Ant when it mattered (he was somewhat in opening quarters/exhibitions and such I suppose). He was competing for playing time with LeBron and KD and Bam and AD. He's not as good a fit with LeBron as AD or Bam (or Embiid) and nobody thinks he's better in this format than KD.

At the end of the day, when it mattered, we went to LeBron/Steph/KD with one of AD/Bam/Embiid. If you think another PF/SF is the right 5th guy there, I guess you have a complaint. I would WAY rather have Booker, especially if he's gonna defend his butt off.

Personally, when KD sat, I think Tatum shoulda got in there. But subs for Steph or Booker rightfully needed to be some combos of Ant, Jrue, White. I think the LeBron subs made more sense often as those same guys, but I like Tatum there too if I'm quibbling.

I have no issue with Tatum not playing for I think he was sort of a bad fit, but more importantly this was the Steph/Lebron/KD farewell tour so those guys were going to win or lose it for the US.

However, Tatum is definitely a better player at this point than Ant and Booker for sure, and at least the equal of KD and Lebron

I don't think it's all that crazy. Tatum was 1st team All-NBA the past three seasons, and these two combined had 0 1st team selections. Boston won a title in that time, KD and LeBron did not. Tatum outplayed KD and Boston swept the Nets in 2022. If that doesn't at least make them equals, what more could Tatum have done? Obviously, KD and LeBron have done more over their entire careers.

For the record, I am not spinning crazy narratives that Kerr intentionally did anything to mess with the Celtics, and I didn't have a problem with KD and LeBron playing over Tatum. They needed for Tatum to make threes, and he wasn't, so why play him if he can't perform his assigned role. I would have liked to see JT get some minutes, but it didn't happen, and they won a Gold Medal. I'd rather Tatum rested up for the regular season anyway, but a token five-minute stint might have been nice. I'm not losing any sleep over it.

It's the difference between looking at regular season awards and using your eyes though. We're playing pickup tomorrow. Space jam style. Are any of you taking Tatum over KD or LeBron? Get real.

Exactly. Because of their ages, Tatum is more reliable over the course of an entire season now, but with all things being equal and everyone healthy, no one except the most diehard Celtics fan would take Tatum over James or Durant in a single game or tournament.

Isn't that the point of why Tatum is equal? Over a season and a deep playoff run you would take Tatum to help you get one the best records in the league and still be healthy and producing for a deep playoff run.

That’s totally fair. And I clearly said that in this Olympics with how Booker and Lebron and KD played i don’t see how Tatum would get minutes. I was only talking big picture and there is no world that Booker is better than Tatum. Ant is somewhat debatable yet it’s pretty clear consensus that Tatum is better.

When the NBA goes this format you win, but the real question is who goes first Lebron or Bugs Bunny?

Good griiiiiiieeeeeef. Might buy two so I have a fresh one ready to go when I wear the first one out.

what the hell is this? :ROFLMAO:

The behind the scenes tours of the Intuit Dome look amazing.
I just wish Balmer would take the opportunity to change the team name to the L.A. Condors or something to go along with the new home arena. Their mascot is already a condor so why stick with the clipper ship theme? The new Clipper logo is pretty meh and the uniforms aren't interesting either.

Yabusele to Sixers.
Saw that was pending earlier today.

Kid made himself some money with the Olympics.
It’s a one year minimum deal (2.1). He probably didn’t make himself that much unless he can parlay it into something bigger. I bet he was making about a million at Real Madrid (though it’s hard to find complete euroleague salary info online). Still, he can presumably go back and get basically the same deal in Europe if he flames out in the nba and creates a significantly higher ceiling for his earnings if he can play well.
