2024 Detroit Crimson Tide..Roll Lions: Draft day! (12 Viewers)

Absolutely in position to do about anything with that 1st pick
Speaking of which how is our FBG draft GM leaning today? Looks like you will be up at #29 sometime tonight.
Holmes did such a good job that the Lions are free to go whichever direction they want. A true BPA situation here. In a real draft I would maybe look to move back but what is the fun in that for this exercise? I think OL, DL and Secondary make the most sense WR is still kind of thin as well.

Wiggins yo 😎
Too slight. 175 pounds at 6'2" with short arms makes me worried he's going to get bullied in the league.

What did people think of the Kool Aid pick? There was 1 guy I was debating with who I won’t mention in case he slips into range where I can trade up for him. ETA; nevermind Graham Barton OL from Duke just went and he was the other guy I was looking at.

I actually think KAM and DeJean could be the top 2 CBs on the Lions board. Cooper because of his versatility and KAM because of his press man prowess (plus we know Holmes loves those two programs). Arnold is more athlete than finished project right now. Wiggins isn’t physical. Mitchell doesn’t do press man.

Josh Reynolds officially a Bronco. Now Detroit still needs a big body veteran reliable target. I wonder what the health and market for Russell Gage is right now.

Outside of 1 story that I read that Kool Aid might have an attitude problem (which might be nothing), it seems like a great fit and good value for 29. I'm pretty sure I would have made the same pick.

DJ Chark would fill the role well, but I suspect that he still sees himself as filling more than the Josh Reynolds role

Oh yeah, he is still out there. So is Tyler Boyd but I am sure he's looking for more money than the Lions plan to spend on a 5th-6th option for the offense.

I thought OBJ signed with Miami.

That’s an uninspiring list…

Gallup, Chark, or maybe MVS. That's about all I see on there that would fill the opening we have at the X. None of it is ideal... that list is a lot of slot guys, guys who play off the line, and guys who are probably on their way out of the league.

I prefer bringing Chark back as at least there is some familiarity with the offense and Goff. I have no interest in MVS as there is a reason he was rarely targeted by the best QB in the game and a team that desperately needed a receiver to step up. Gallup is someone who I thought had promise but am not sure if he ever was the same after injury as last year was pretty unspectacular, however he would be my second choice. We will add to that position in the draft, just depends on when.If they are really unsure about Jamo it could be as early as round one.

Problem with Gallup and MVS is they are so unreliable and mostly just downfield targets. I don’t think either can be relied on to do what Reynolds did.

Oh, I agree for sure. They were just the best of the bad, I thought. The opening we have is for an on the line X (split end). ARSB should stay in the slot, Jamo should be off the line (flanker)... so they need a big body who can line up on the line. With what is available, we won't be replacing what Reynolds gave us... which is a bummer. He was a really clutch receiver for us the last 2 years. At this point they just need to find who can best drag DB's downfield and make a play here and there.

The 49ers signed TE Brock Wright to an offer sheet, 3 years, $12 million. The Lions have five days to match. If they don't, they will not get draft pick compensation.

Interesting decision they have. I wonder if they want to wait out for someone else or maybe even draft a #2 TE. 49er fans seem to like the signing.

You are probably right. Not a huge contract and he seems to be their type of player. If they got a compensation pick maybe it would be different but there isn't a lot of upside in letting him go.

Here are the terms:

2024: $1.5M salary (all guaranteed), $1.5M signing bonus proration: $3M cap hit
2025: $2M salary, $1.5M signing bonus proration: $3.5M cap hit
2026: $4M salary, $1.5M signing bonus proration: $5.5M cap hit ($1.5M in dead cap if cut)

Unless the Lions want to go a different way and find someone who is more versatile. They still have the option to cut in year three and save $4 million. I suppose it is possible the Lions still have hope thst James Mitchell might step up. I am about 50/50.

Reynolds deal is essentially 1 year 4.5 million, easy to cut him into year 2 and a lot of incentives.

Kind of wish the Lions would have kept him around for that.

A professional kicker made a 64-yard field goal inside Ford Field on Saturday. No, he doesn't play for the Detroit Lions.

But that could be changing...

Michigan Panthers kicker Jake Bates boomed a 64-yarder game-winner with room to spare in the team's victory over the St. Louis Battlehawks in the opening weekend of UFL competition.

The Detroit Lions have already reached out to Bates.

What's interesting is that he actually made two in row from 64. The first was iced by a timeout.

That said, per lionswire::
"it’s the first field goal attempt for Bates since high school. He was a kickoff specialist at Arkansas and Texas State before winning the job with the Panthers. He started his college career as a soccer player at Central Arkansas.

Jake Bates, YOU are a Detroit Lion!

Since March 19, NFL on Fox has been running a fan poll for the best current head coach in the league.

MCDC has reached the finals; going up against Andy Reid.

Previous rounds in the bracket:
  • Rd 1: Campbell (4) over Allen (13) 97%
  • Rd of 16: Campbell (4) over McCarthy (5) 89%
  • Elite 8: Campbell (4) over Shanahan (1) 54%
  • Final 4: Campbell (4) over McVey (2) 60%
  • Championship Final: Campbell (4) vs Reid (1)
Currently 34% to 66% in favor of Andy; the margin was 25-75 this morning. They’re at 7K votes rn, most matchups have been 40-55K votes.

r/NFL (Reddit) has been on absolute meltdown for the last 5 days over the latest 2 upsets.

Lions match SF contract offer.

That feels like a waste of money to me. James Mitchell can do everything Wright can for 25% the price.
Yet the top 2 teams in the NFC were both ready to sign him to the same contract.
Maybe he's a great locker room guy? He's not much of a pass catcher or blocker.

He's actually an excellent run blocker. But if you are only looking at it from a fantasy perspective then no he's not anything special. 2TE sets tend to be on run plays.

Is he? He's consistently ranked near the bottom in run blocking by PFF (68th out of 81 qualifiers in 2023, 74th out of 84 in 2022, 75th out of 85 in 2021) and I haven't seen anything when I've been watching the Lions to suggest they are wrong. I thought LaPorta was a better blocker, and St. Brown was a better blocker than any of their TEs.

My biggest question is if this guy sucks so bad, why were San Francisco and the Lions so eager to sign him?
Right, not like it was the Panthers and Raiders fighting over him, must be something there

It goes both ways, bad teams are looking for play makers and younger ones. While Wright isn't old, he doesn't fit the mold for bad teams on the rebuild. He does fit well for good teams that need a solid back-up and a guy that has experience and a decent skill set.

I also disagree with top teams just dying to sign him. It has been 3 weeks since free agency started.

Brock Wright contract details
Brock Wright: 3 years, $12 million — $3.545 million signing bonus

2024:

  • $1,055,000 base salary (guaranteed)
  • $709,000 in prorated signing bonus
  • $50,000 workout bonus
  • $1,764,000 cap hit
2025:
  • $1,170,000 base salary
  • $709,000 in prorated signing bonus
  • $445,000 option bonus
  • $255,000 roster bonus
  • $50,000 workout bonus
  • $2,629,000 cap hit
2026:
  • $3,310,000 base salary
  • $709,000 in prorated signing bonus
  • $445,000 option bonus
  • $340,000 roster bonus
  • $50,000 workout bonus
  • $4,854,000 cap hit
  • $2,127,000 dead cap if cut
2027 (voided)
  • $1,418,000 in dead cap (two signing bonus prorations)
As you can see above, the cap hit for the next two years is actually well under what it would have been if Wright had simply signed his RFA tender of one year, $2.985 million. The contract utilizes voided years to spread out the signing bonus for Wright, and the use of unguaranteed option, roster, and workout bonuses give Wright plenty of motivation to keep performing at a high level.

Obviously, the third year in Wright’s contract represents a pretty significant raise. And while there’s certainly a chance Wright earns that $3.3 million salary, most players don’t earn the final year of their deal.

Even then, the Lions are in relatively good shape: the out in the contract is built so they would only incur $2.127 million in dead cap if they cut him after two years. So if you combine the first two years of cap with with the dead cap of Year 3, you’re talking about a two-year, $6.52 million contract, which sounds far more tolerable and fair than a three-year, $12 million deal.

In the end, good on Wright for locking up far more guaranteed money and an extra year of job security. And good on the Lions for matching a fair deal that will only cost them slightly more than their original offer—and not leave them in search of filling an immediate need at tight end in the upcoming draft.
