2024 Philadelphia Eagles - First one was for the fans. This one was for the team. Next one is for the legacy. (5 Viewers)

If you are insistent on running a certain scheme might as well get the master of said scheme
I'm pumping the brakes on any expectations. It's been thought by some that the rest of the NFL finally caught up with the "Fangio Scheme" in 2023, Fangio is out after one uneven year in MIA, and 4 disciples of the Fangio D (DCs: Desai, Barry, Hurtt, HC: Staley) all got canned. So there might be something to that thinking.

There's a big risk we're bringing in someone that might not yet be willing to think he needs to (or can) adapt a system that has roots going back almost 40 years. We just went through a season where the offensive scheme that worked just a year prior had been figured out and coaches were too proud to see/admit it.
You’re can only pick from who’s available and they’re only available because they have some warts.

This is a monumental upgrade over Desai/Patricia in nearly every way imaginable.

Exactly. Will he be a top 5-10 DC in the league? I highly doubt it. But those guys aren't available for DC positions. Will he be a bottom 5-10 DC in the league? I also highly doubt that.

What do you like about Smith?
I answered it above 😊
I would be on board with Smith, but I don't think Nick would be to be honest. I think Nick wants a bit of a "go along with what I say" guy like Johnson might have been, and other Johnson probably would be. I don't think he wants to be challenged and have his whole offense change. Not saying that is a good or bad thing, just saying I think it's a thing.

Dolphins were 1st in QB hits, 3rd in sacks, 3rd in QB pressure % with the 5th lowest blitz rate, all while losing their 2 best edge rushers, Fangio can scheme up pressure.
Miami's defense was one of the best in the league down the stretch. From Week 8 on:

Success rate: 7th
EPA per play: 8th
20.4 points per game
Fangio’s defense in 2023:

• 323.3 yards/game allowed (11th)
• 5.1 yards per play allowed (9th)
• 27 takeaways (8th)
• 56 sacks (3rd)
• 27.7% pressure rate (3rd)

That was with Jalen Ramsey, Xavien Howard, Jaelan Phillips, and Bradley Chubb all missing time at some point.

Could be the case. Based off of what he said today it seems like it’s the OC’s show and that could attract the one they like the most if true.

Ok I am more excited now.

I gotta watch the presser I guess. If he did say it's the OC's show, and he wants to be more of a CEO coach, then I could see them bringing in someone with experience. Still think he wants a new guy though.

They asked "whose offense will it be" in the past he was adamant MINE, now today he said "it'll be the Eagles offense" so reading the tea leaves and all, he has been told to be flexible and adapt to the new guy, whoever that will be

Or he doesn't want to take the blame when he hires a puppet and the offense sucks.

He said the new OC will bring in a scheme, and that concepts that have worked in the past will mesh in.

You can take that a few ways. One they’re gonna use what works and two it Stoutland stays he’s the run game coordinator.

Ya, just read some quotes and it does sound promising that we will deviate away from Nick's system a bit and can see himself as a CEO coach (loving this new term btw)

Sirianni, meanwhile, described the search for a new offensive coordinator as "extensive", with a goal of bringing someone in with fresh ideas after the offense went "stale" down the stretch. While Sirianni has had his offensive coordinator call the plays for most of his time in Philly, he has long described it as his offense. But it appears the new offensive coordinator will have more creative control.

"A guy who has a vision, a guy who is going to call the plays, a guy who is going to be able to coach the quarterback in the same sense there, so it's just about getting the right guy," Sirianni said. "But I'm hiring him to do a job and to be in charge of the offense." If the new coordinators are in charge of the respective sides of the ball, what will Sirianni's responsibilities be?

"The head coach of the football team," he responded.

"I guess it would be very similar to what's going on right now. Does that mean I'll sit more into defensive meetings at times instead of always being in an offensive meeting? Maybe. But my job is to be the head coach of the team, not the head coach of the offense, not the head coach of the defense, not the head coach of the special teams.

"So that's building the culture, that's making sure the culture is working with our five core values ... having a relationship with the guys on the football team because I know when I have that connection with the guys on the football team, that's when the culture is working at a high level."

"What does he even do" rears its head again lmaoooo

What does John Harbaugh do, if he's not calling plays? Oh yeah, the same s***.

Fangio is the exact type of hire I said the Eagles should look to do. A guy who you don't need to micro-manage and who will be around for 4 or 5 years.

Unless the defense stinks and he gets fired. I don't think that will.happen but if they suck again his seat gets warm pretty quickly
They'd have to be bottom 5 to fire him after 1 season I think.

I think they'll give him at least 2.

Good move for the D and Nick. They running a 3/4 now?
Wasn't that Reddicks weakness in Ari and Car? I don't know if we have the personnel for a 3-4
He had double digit sacks his last year in AZ and his only year in CAR. I don't know if he was ineffective in other ways though.
He runs a variation of the 3-4 and we definitely have some good personel for that. He also ran quite a bit of 4-2-5 as well.

We need to upgrade LBer and Safety for sure to assist.

Contrary to popular belief Vic Fangio when he consultant was not helping the defebse but offebse to break down defensive weaknesses.

Howie Roseman also tried to get Patrick Surtain at the deadline. No word of Denver’s asking price was too rich or just weren’t interested in holding discussions at the time

For OC I want to see us play to Jalen’s strengths. I want to see RPO with 3 step drops.

I don’t think Jalen does well the longer the play goes. Sure, he makes some plays with his feet, but this past season it felt like constant negative plays. Not sure if there is a statistic, but I would wager the Eagles offense was one of the worst with the amount of negative plays.

Give me a WCO with RPO. One, two, three, ball out of the hand or tuck and run.

Miami and Philly blitzed about the same rate (Miami slightly less at 21.5% vs 22%). That's not an indicator of a good vs bad defense obviously, the Raven were right there at 21.9, and they had the #1 defense this year. Miami had a LOT more missed tackles then we did, but that probably needs more context to evaluate.

Per Schefty:

Former Dolphins’ defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is traveling to Philadelphia this morning to officially sign the contract to become the Eagles’ new defensive coordinator, per league source. Eagles officially get their man.
We are finally getting the master of this defense instead of the cheap imitations. Miami's numbers look pretty good when you understand the fact they played the majority of the year without Ramsey and a lot of the key guys missed chunks of time.

ALL IN LETS GO!

I'm excited about this, and forgive me if I'm wrong but don't you need good/great linebacking in his system? Like, at the very least better than the Frank and Tom from accounting that we have out there right now?

Jason Kelce in a Dec. 2022 New Heights episode: "I think it's really nice to have a coach whose sole job it is to narrow in on these specific situations that only come up once a season, if that. I kind of like it when the coach doesn't call plays. They're more involved with the team. They're more in the moment. They're more managerial. They communicate more...

"...The bigger part of that job is being able to lead, being able to manage, being able to communicate, being able to keep everybody going in the right direction, situational ball."

I think most defenses are going to benefit from good LB play... of course, and CB play...and safety play...and DL play....
I think we may have been too hopeful that Nakobe Dean would be able to fill in to this defense. Can we get our medical team to perform some kind of surgery to remove mass from Jordan Davis and add it to Dean...

Seeing the thread title is prompting this question: what was up with Sirianni having the Italian flag on his sideline Eagles gear? And where can I get them???

from the CBS article JAA posted above, my favorite exerpt that lends cred to the several assumptions the article points out

Fangio, remember, spent much of 2022 advising the Eagles, so he's familiar with some of the best talent already on their defensive roster, chiefly pass rushers Haason Reddick and Josh Sweat, who helped the club log a franchise-record 70 sacks that year. This season, while Desai showcased some more creative looks before his polarizing reassignment in December, the Eagles effectively still banked on their front four to do the heavy lifting, and when Reddick and Sweat couldn't replicate their 2022 dominance, everything fell apart. It didn't help that the aging secondary was beset by injuries, enabling opponents to get the ball off quicker.

I still have hope for Dean. Sometimes it takes guys a couple years to get acclimated to the NFL grind. This is year 3 now and while he hasn't played a full season, he's done all the other stuff. Practice, film, off season, road trips, managing work outs and diet during the year. Dean knows he's on the clock now and his career comes down to what he does this year. Hopefully he stays healthy because I think he gets it right football wise this year.

Originally was part of the culture weeks the nfl did where players and coaches could wear a flag decal of their heritage or home country (ex Mailata Aussie Flag,). Nick and the coaches kept their Italian flags on all year. Might have to get an official sideline hat, but an Italian flag Decal and sew or iron it on.
