2025 College Football Thread: Big 10 exploring private equity for infusion of cash to give to fired head coaches (12 Viewers)

Haven't made too many large wagers on college football this season. Really tamped it down over the years for, uh, reasons.

But boy, I feel a LOT like Kramer at the airport betting flight arrivals right now with the USC/Iowa game. USC -6.5 just seems like a smoking good wager to me. Iowa has to pick themselves up after a bruising defeat and play on the road against a team that's clicking on its offensive cylinders right now. Oregon was down several starters and depth pieces and still managed to grind that game out. USC is going to just unleash hell on a tired team. IMO.
It is looking like heavy rain in LA on Saturday. That helps Iowa quite a bit as they have no passing game. I think Iowa has a good chance to pull off the upset.

Eh, it's warm rain. I'm not backing off on this. Combine Ferentz' comments about Lincoln Riley last year just bashing his coaching and his lousy defense and I think Iowa is in major trouble. If they get down 2 scores, it's over.

Have you heard all the gushing from Ferentz this week about USC? He’s really really trying to undo all that bulletin board material. It’s almost embarrassingly transparent.

USC is having a great season right now. To me, they’re playing at a really high level. Coming in — I don’t know if it’s quiet or not. I haven’t heard a lot of chatter about them. They’re sitting there at the top of the league at 5-1. They’ve been playing really good football all year long.

As you might expect, the roster, they have great size, great speed, great athleticism. No big surprise there. Then beyond that, they’re a very well-coached team. Certainly, Coach Riley is a noted offensive coach. He’s had great success no matter where he’s gone in that regard.

Special teams, the first thing that jumps out at you, they don’t punt very much, and they kickoff a lot, which goes back to their offensive success. They’re really good in the kicking game, have an excellent kicker, been very consistent, very productive. Got No. 6 back there, the great receiver, is a punt return guy as well. Obviously, a very dangerous player and a good punter on top of that.

Defensively, they’re in the second year of their system, and I think they’ve made big, big strides there, and to me that’s part of the reason they’re 7-2. They’ve always been a potent offensive team and playing really good defense right now. Look back a year ago, they were 6-6, won their bowl game to go 7-6 and right now 7-2. Just playing at a really high level.

A couple of things that jump out at you, I mentioned the defensive play. They run the ball, at least in conference play, 50 yards more a game than they were a year ago and right up there at the top of the conference with Oregon. So doing a really good job there. Quarterback is playing tremendous for them, a really good football player. With that, they had 15 interceptions on the year, and right now they have five. Their quarterback play has been really been on top of that and I think a big difference in this whole thing.

All that being said, we’ve got a big challenge on our hands. Doing our best to get ready for it right now. Then playing in the Coliseum, a historic venue. I didn’t realize it was built as a tribute to the veterans from World War I back in the ’20s, a lot of history behind that on top of it
.”

Coaches have memories like elephants and motivation doesn't grow on trees. I think he channels Dan Lanning and opens up hell on Iowa.

I have vivid memories of the 2015 Rose Bowl where Christian McCaffrey and Stanford dog-walked them. Sure, times have changed but this is the quintessential fish out of water team. After what Oregon did to them in the trenches, I think Iowa is tired.

I just saw that USC and Michigan could potentially leave the B10 of the private equity stuff... is this really a thing or click bait type stuff?

Weird. In the articles a few weeks ago about PE groups coming to the B1G, Michigan was one standing in opposition. I think them leaving the B1G in sports would depend a good bit on what would happen academically. They and the rest of the conference get billions every year from private industry (in addition to their federal grant monies). Take that away from them and it doesn't really make sense to jump. I have a friend that graduated with me working in a UM lab and they only have to apply for and attain P01 level funding once to get put on the tenure track.

Four-star safety Khalil Terry commits to Notre Dame football over USC

Given USC’s current approach that recruits should not commit to the Trojans until they are ready to shut down the recruiting process including all official visits, I’m not expecting any USC commits for 2027 any time soon.

I saw an article saying that SEC would welcome them.

If my algorithm for youtube gets screwed up and starts sending me Trojan crap on there because you keep sending me stuff I am going to kill you. :boxing:

That said, thanks for the link. Yea, it is crazy- The B1G can't be that dumb as to not realize that Michigan and USC are two of their top three brands. And three of the five schools that I think could go independent and thrive (along with Ohio St, Alabama and Texas). Forcing their non football teams into the ACC would be just a killer for USC though. Geez, the B1G is bad enough but then move to ACC? If my son was being recruited to USC (ok, that just made my stomach lurch) in say swim.... and I didn't have the blind hate of USC to begin with.... I would be strongly against it. So, let's say Cal recruited him for football or another sport. Yea, I would be pretty strongly opposed. Stanford? Maybe the elite level of the school would balance it out for me that go ahead and tough it out so you have a Stanford degree and connections. Anyways....

Yea, this is crazy. And that video shows a lot of concerning things about the whole thing.

LOL re the algorithm.

Yeah, the non-football sports aspect does really suck. Surely this gets worked out.

But at what point does the Superleague talk start gaining steam? Rather than the SEC and the Big10 joining up - it’s all the top brands/teams breaking to form their own conference to eat up more tv revenue. With money quickly being the only thing that matters, it seems almost inevitable.

I mean, it would have to blow up the SEC which is probably the biggest obstacle. Thr SEC peeps are as committed to the SEC as they are their schools they cheer. I don't k iw if I always seen a proposal that actually made sense and would be workable.

GM'S Top 20 - Nov. 10, 2025 - Make-up for Last Week

1. Ohio State -
Sure, the schedule ain't the best, but they aren't getting tested. At all. Not since the Texas game.
2. Texas A&M - Jumps Indian for me. I doubt the committee sees it this way, but I do. SEC is a better conference than the Big10 and A&M is motoring through it.
3. Indiana - Credit to Penn State for playing their tails off. Still think this is a dangerous team, but I have A&M in front by a short-hair.
4. Alabama - It wasn't pretty but a win is a win and Baton Rouge is a hard place to get one of those.
5. Georgia - Disposed of Miss St with ease and now welcome the resurgent Horns to Athens.
6. Texas Tech - Bumping them up two places for beating the absolute snot out of a very good BYU team.
7. Oregon - That was a gritty, gutsy win in foul weather. Iowa forced them into an old fashioned rock fight and Oregon survived. A get right game awaits them Friday night vs Minnesota.
8. Ole Miss - ZERO f'n credit for scheduling The Citadel in November. Boooooooo this team. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
9. Notre Dame - I think they beat Miami by 2 TDs today; less sure about A&M.
10. Texas - A nice way for my dad to depart. Watched his beloved Longhorns win, shut his eyes and drifted off to another world with the Eyes of Texas playing in his head.
11. Oklahoma - Kicked their way to a victory over Tennessee and have a defense to carry them if/when they need it.
12. Utah - I don't believe the Big12 will get two teams into the Dance, but if they do, this is my bet to get that 2nd spot.
13. Vanderbilt - This is a fun team to watch. Not sure what the ceiling is, but Vandy is terrific fun for college football fans.
14. USC - Lost in all the punt shenanigan talk is the fact that USC pulverized a good Northwestern team.
15. Miami - Wonder how much longer Mario's homecoming love continues. Good win against Syracuse I guess but wow, do Oregon fans smile with glee every time he barfs all over himself.
16. Georgia Tech - This is the ACC team I'm rooting for the most and I sure hope they win out before the Georgia game.
17. BYU - I almost kicked them out of the Top 20 completely but I think this is the right spot for them.
18. Iowa - Recency bias, sure, but I think they could beat Virginia, Louisville and probably a couple of other teams similarly ranked. This is a good football team.
19. Pittsburgh - This is a really good team that nobody is talking about. I think they deserve a top 20 ranking.
20. Michigan - Watch the committee prop this team up in advance of their big game.

Dropping Out:

Virginia
- What the mother bleeping F was THAT? Horrendous loss. You can't lose to Wake Forest after all the good capital you banked to date.
Louisville - Another head scratcher losing to Cal.

Just Missed:

Nobody
. Teams on the bubble had bad outings.

- Committee didn't ding Indiana for their close victory over a reeling Penn State team. That's fine. I still think A&M is deserving at 2.
- If SEC teams are going to continue to play The Citadel in November and NOT get punished for it, they'll never stop scheduling them. Ole Miss should be behind Oregon.
- BYU at 12 after that loss? Okay, fine, whatever.
- I'm higher on USC, that's fine, I'm biased towards Pac 12 and they have a chance to prove me right.
- Committee kept Louisville and Virginia in the Top 20 and I think that's generous after those losses. The loss to Cal wasn't terrible, I guess. But the loss by Virginia was not good.

Nobody gives them credit for playing citadel. It's a money grab. If they could make more money not playing them they would. Not sure why anyone freaks out about this. They also hold these weeks in case of a hurricane game. I believe for example TAMU could pay samford off and play LSU in the even there was a hurricane but I can't find clear evidence for this, I've heard it cited though.

Michigan State gets 3-year probation; 14 wins from 3 seasons vacated

The penalties include:

▪️3-year probation
▪️$30,000 fine plus 1.5% of football budget
▪️Recruiting restrictions
▪️show-cause for various former staff members
▪️Vacated team wins in which ineligible student athletes competed

---
On the bright side, Michigan State doesn't have to worry about a post-season ban.
Shutter the entire football program. Redirect all that money into the basketball and hockey programs and convert Spartan Stadium into condo units.

Program is a total joke. :lmao:

Oh, bull spit. That's the dumbest thing I've read today and I clicked on some ridiculous stuff. It is November - the bulk of P4 schools were playing real teams. Ole Miss played the Salvation Army. And they did it because of hurricanes? Money grab games are played in September. SEC needs to stop this crap now.

I wish Ohio State would be on this side of the equity deal. Why tie yourself to something that is like 20 years or more?
Maybe because they are getting the bigger payday out of it... at least that is what the video bigbottom linked said. Money has a way of making organizations do things.

Oh, bull spit. That's the dumbest thing I've read today and I clicked on some ridiculous stuff.
Did you click in one of bigbottoms USC propaganda links and it screwed up your algorithm? I just know this going to happen to me now.

Three more days until I get rid of this stupid avatar!
Now you made a sad Chad on top of screwing up my algorithms.

We need some oversight committee that forces 8 to 9 team conferences with full round robin so we can accurately determine who is good within each conference. Let everyone have their 1 cupcake home game against FCS or lower G5 team. And require all other non-conference to be against other power conference schools.

Not sure why it matters if you play your cupcakes in September vs. November. I feel like this stuff just leads us to more of a league system. Get rid of the bowls, play your local guys early. Or not at all.

Also, let's not forget those Citadel players are usually also going into service for our country. These games help programs like that stay alive.

It absolutely matters! While Oregon is losing bodies in a fierce battle against a very tough opponent with precious few games left in the regular season, Ole Miss is playing a Kleenex, resting starters by halftime. It is a November bye week.

Spare me the lecture about the importance of the Citadel to our country. I pay taxes too. Happy they got paid. It has mess all nothing to do with my belief that ALL teams in contention for a playoff berth should be playing a similar schedule. Ole Miss getting a game against Citadel when the rest of the country is facing real competition is crap. Pure crap.

20. Michigan - Watch the committee prop this team up in advance of their big game.

Oh, bull spit. That's the dumbest thing I've read today and I clicked on some ridiculous stuff. It is November - the bulk of P4 schools were playing real teams. Ole Miss played the Salvation Army.

Plus Ole Miss paid them half a million to play the game.

DO IT IN SEPTEMBER.

Jesus, this isn't hard. Navy and the Citadel are not the same.

It is an unfair advantage for Ole Miss to play a gimme when the rest of the country is fighting like hell against real competition. I will die on this hill.

3. Indiana - Credit to Penn State for playing their tails off. Still think this is a dangerous team, but I have A&M in front by a short-hair.

Yes, Navy is still FBS and not FCS. An FCS game at all for a big time program like Ole Miss to me is a making a joke of your schedule no matter when it is played but I can stomach it better if it is like the first game of the season. This is typical Lane Kiffin "I am so smart and scummy" which is his brand.

I don't know about Citadel but even though Navy is not a championship contender ever, playing them is a rough go as you have to gear your defense to play them in ways you don't have to for anyone else. Many programs do not want to play Navy not because they are that good but it is just a tough matchup to adjust to.

If it's such a better way to do it and so unfair shouldn't Oregon just scheduled southwestern oregon state or some **** in November too?

Sounds like whining to me. OU played Illinois St, Temple, and Kent St this year.

Oregon played Montana St, Oregon State, Oklahoma State, Northwestern, and Rutgers.

I guess it's better to play Rutgers and the OSUs? All those teams suck about as bad as Montana St and Temple and the like.

I just don't know that it's noble to play Rutgers in November over some crap directional school. A free win is a free win.

It didn't bother me when OU was in the Big XII, doesn't bother me now.

The sec is adding another game in conference the next season are they not?
Yeah - won’t surprise me if a few keep the November easy game, probably grown accustomed to it. Ole Miss played conference games in weeks 2 and 3 when everyone else was playing their cupcakes. The issue is and always has been the lack of a 9th conference game and that won’t be a thing next year.

Pure crap.
Yeah. Seems like we are heading this type of arrangement. Have a preseason, then play your "conference"

Nobody was trying to lecture you, but your taxes don't compare to the sacrifice of our veterans. I think it is is disrespectful to use a military academy for this point.

There are much better reasons to know Ole Miss is full of ****.

An FCS game at all for a big time program like Ole Miss to me is a making a joke of your schedule no matter when it is played but I can stomach it better if it is like the first game of the season. This is typical Lane Kiffin "I am so smart and scummy" which is his brand.

I like to believe that it wasn't just Texas Tech beating BYU that had them move up ahead of Ole Miss but the committee recognized the ridiculousness of playing an FCS school this late and moved them down for it.

I don't know about Citadel but even though Navy is not a championship contender ever, playing them is a rough go as you have to gear your defense to play them in ways you don't have to for anyone else. Many programs do not want to play Navy not because they are that good but it is just a tough matchup to adjust to.

Navy would be favored by 27 over The Citadel.

Oregon should be ranked ahead of Ole Miss based on record and recent wins.
Oregon lost to the only decent team they played. :lmao:

Pure crap.
Yeah. Seems like we are heading this type of arrangement. Have a preseason, then play your "conference"

I have a friend who went to The Citadel on a tennis scholarship and he’s not a vet, so that got me curious about the “military academy” angle. It seems that The Citadel is a “public senior military college.” Service in the military following graduation is not required, and only about a third of their graduates enlist in the military. That makes it way different than a service academy in my view. By the way, Texas A&M is also a public senior military college.

It isn't shoveling to say thay they are an FCS school and not really a worthwhile opponent for a top tier football program trying to win a championship. There are tons of schools that are great schools but are FCS or D2 or D3. They just compete at different levels and that isn't talking crap to state, it is just a fact.

$500,000 is a rounding error.

:lmao:

Iowa is ranked #21 even after losing to Oregon.
Iowa playing Oregon so close is more about Oregon than Iowa.
I think you are not giving Iowa enough credit.

Pure crap.

I’m not shoveling anything. I was simply curious as to its status after you called it a military academy (my father is a graduate of West Point) so I looked it up. My post was 100% factual. I haven’t weighed in one iota on its merit as a school (my good friend is a graduate) or a football program. I belong to a family of veterans and spent most of my childhood living on military bases. So I resent your implication that I am somehow disrespecting the military during the week of Veteran’s Day simply by drawing a distinction between our service academies with their required military service and a public senior military college.

By the way, outside of the service academies, Texas A&M sends more graduates into military service than any other school in the country (due of course to its size). I know quite a few of their grads who have served.

Iowa played Indiana close as well (20-15). I’ve been as critical of the quality of Oregon’s wins as anyone, but beating Iowa in Iowa City is a legit win over a top 25 team.

LOL they play these cupcakes to rest and prepare for the end of season rivalry game. Good schtick coming up with the hurricane makeup game date though.

Shame on the committee for not punishing Ole Miss for this. Until this nonsense is punished it will continue.

Maybe the ghost of Gordon Lightfoot will come up with a ballad about the dangers of Novemeber Hurricanes in the Mississippi Delta.

Yeah my FIL started at the Citadel before transferring to one of the actual service academies and serving for over 20 years.

He's talked about it. It's not the same.

It's also completely beside the point of whether they're a worthy football opponent for a real team. They are just like all the other FCS schools. A bye week favor, typically for an instate public institution, to get a good practice in, maintain a good relationship with state regulators, and get some funding to a school.

They are talking about 2 inches of rain on Saturday. It’s going to be a downpour. And USC has a grass field so I expect a muddy game. Now USC has a good run game, but making their offense one-dimensional is a big problem for the Trojans as Iowa’s run D is way better than the Trojans run D.

Not ideal conditions for USC which I think makes it a close game. USC has been pretty balanced on offense this year though.

Iowa is likely to end up 7-5 and has lost to every decent team they’ve played. They’ve kept a couple of losses at home close against good teams, that’s true, but time will tell if they are a legit top 25 team. They might have just been fortunate to get those really good teams at home, otherwise they would have been blown out. Two of their wins are against UMASS and an FCS school that is 1-9. They lost to a team that’s going to finish in the middle of the Big 12.

Correct. Then it would be a 15 yard previous spot, team UNS.

I am interested in what NCAA will say in our weekly training video. Nothing has been posted on our officiating site (NCAA all levels)

I think it’s debatable that he was a punter simply because of where he was standing.
NCAA said this should be a penalty on the second punter. Team UNS 15 yards. Officials need to watch for this because teams are copycats.

Be ready and aware.

My pregame(during the week) is a check on the team roster on the web for duplicate #s and positions listed. Then add those to my game card so that I can check the field for them at same time.

Hopefully the coach does not try that this week in our Championship game (CIAA)
