2025 College Football Thread: FSU loses to Stanford in battle of academic powers (61 Viewers)

When did Notre Dame get rid of their grass field?

A travesty.
Brian Kelly. He demanded it early in his tenure. Fans have always hated it. Every injury we’ve had on it still gets the reminder of his demand and their refusal to still yet remove it.

They literally have more money than God.

Why the hesitation?
No good reason anymore. Swarbrick and Kelly were tied at the hip so any admission of failure was never going to happen. No excuse not to now with both gone

My goodness what a poor performance overall by the D tonight. Officials made some big calls and no calls (obvious hold tackle on the final TD) but the Irish earned that goof up.

Curious what Freeman does from here. Ash has been horrific. Denbrock has been marginal at best. Overall very sloppy on both sides of the ball and naturally a fluke XP hold costs them.

That’s three straight losses Marcus. Let’s see what you do from here.

fuggouttaheah with the no-call whining.

Must be nice to have the play by play guy on the lookout for calls that SHOULD have gone ND's way, after A&M already had 4x the penalties that ND had. He was looking for DPI on the desperation drive, color guy had to correct him. :lmao:

Yeah, this one hurt. Thought they were going to get away with it. Awesome game though

On the upside was much closer than I thought it would be.

We’re about a #15-18 team. It could be worse.
With all due respect, Tennessee was every bit the equal of Georgia. They have the same level of talent that Georgia has. If I’m being honest, Tennessee should have won that game no problem.

The difference? Coaching.

Georgia has that dawg mentality that comes directly from Kirby Smart.

Tennessee has an insecure head coach that is skittish and panics on the sidelines.

When Georgia needed it they got it.
Yuuup. Joe is coping here because he loves his team but Tennessee and namely their coach blew that game. That team should be way better than 15-18 range.
I think he mainly just objected to "cowardice" (which I know isn't here but was in the other posts). If it is phrased as "overly conservative" I don't think he would disagree. Georgia has a better overall roster but Tennessee is within striking distance of it. Kirby is the best coach in the country IMO. Heupel is an offensive mastermind but I don't think he gets the most out of his team like Kirby does. Tennessee may not lose again the rest of the regular season.

Underwood showing off the legs today. Future is blindingly bright for this kid.

And arm.

I get that Oklahoma is A LOT better than CMU. But I've no idea why Michigan ran that offense last week and this one this week. Its a completely different offense.

Sounds like we can expect to see him cook from here on out. Big road game coming up, can't wait to see what he can do.

Muschamp, McElwain, Mullen and now this bozo are the last 4 Gator head coaches. Truly remarkable spree of hiring terrible coaches. Can’t even fire the AD making these hires because they just won a basketball title too. Program in hell.

Never thought I’d see it, but Freeman went part BK at his presser - paraphrased the calls aren’t the problem, it’s the execution.

He stuck up for Chris Ash (& Mike Denbrock) over the players. Unbelievable. Ash decimated the work Al Golden had done in only 8 months and bears significant criticism, Marcus. Fans are not happy with Freeman this morning.

ND defense has given up 68 points this season in 2 games. Last year, that was the 6 game total.

On a positive note ... commitments are up.

Ha. It was a huge recruiting weekend too with many in attendance. Not a good time to salt away opportunities in front of top commits and potential commits.

As best I can tell from using chat gpt no team has ever been ranked as an 0-3 team, but chat says Notre Dame is the only team to be ranked as 0-2 twice and are now set to do this a third time.

*Chat GPT is often wrong, fact check this

Not a single ranked team on the rest of the schedule (though that could, and hopefully will, change).

21-10 in the 4th. But it should be 35-10; New Mexico blew consecutive 4th and 1s on the UCLA 3 yard line. I cannot believe I’m watching this.

New Mexico is pretty decent this year. Their new HC came from Idaho and he damn near beat Oregon in Autzen last year. I know that doesn't make you feel any better but this is a much better version of a traditionally weak team.

DeShaun Foster might have been a bit of a reach. Gotta get the HC right first.
I don’t want to diss New Mexico. Much respect; they appear to be playing well this year.

But they won 35-10 in the Rose Bowl. And the game wasn’t that close. UCLA, on offense and defense, was anemic for the third week in a row. And the penalties- I stopped counting after 12. Dumb stupid penalties are the ultimate sign of poor coaching.

UCLA has talent. Lots of guys ranked 4 star recruits by ESPN. They have way more talent than New Mexico and UNLV combined.

I want Foster gone today. He will get a lot of money on a buyout, which as always was stupid. I don’t care. He’s got to go. The university needs to make a statement. Deshaun seems like a nice dude but this isn’t working. Let’s find a new coach, and start looking now so that we don’t lose another year of recruits.

Looks like you got your wish as it’s being reported that Foster is gone.

Haven't watched a single play but is Ohio U supposed to be good? Ohio State playing like crap?

It was a really weird game with OSU making some weird decisions and failing to execute in the red zone after marching the ball up and down the field, along with several fluky plays going Ohio's way. Total yards was 572-181. That was something like 250-25 at the half but with the Buckeyes only up 10. Ohio is a solid team, though. They should win the MAC and are better than at least the bottom schools in the P4; might be middle of the pack if they were in the B12.

They might be my #20 team tomorrow. I don't think there are 20 better teams than ND.

Ohio is the chalk of the MAC.

But still.....

You gotta be Stoked! What a start by Georgia Tech!
Yeah, pretty pumped. And this team, unlike previous GT teams, feels like they won't have one of those stupid letdowns. I'm sure they will lose a game before the UGA game though because they don't feel like they're good enough to be 11-0. The schedule is weak this year but I don't care we usually play one of the hardest schedules in the country. We just happen to avoid Miami, FSU, and Louisville this year.

Yeah - we can never take anything for granted because we don’t have the talent and depth that the top teams do but man, it’s hard not to be excited. We should be favored in maybe the rest of our games except against UGA.

Brent Pry fired at Virginia Tech too

As a former Hokie donor, Pry (and Fuentes before him) were put in a bad spot. I don't think Pry is a good coach, but the overall sports department is a joke.

I can give the lowdown for those that give a crap ...

Problem #1 is Whit Babcock the AD ... by a country mile. He isn't good at getting funding, and he's cheap. He has made bad hires in many sports just not football. If you are going to give a FB coach 1/3 the number of assistants and recruiters as say Clemson, do you really think you are gonna win? If you are gonna open a new weightlifting facility and decide to use 20+ year old weight machines because and I quote "a weight is a weight"., do you really think recruits are gonna beat down your door to play. If you are gonna put FB players in dorms with no AC all summer, are they gonna be happy there. I can go farther to the sport I played there ... if you are not gonna provide water to athletes because they can pay for it themselves. None of this makes sense if you want players to succeed. Babcock is the 12th highest paid AD in the country. Read that again. Not an SEC AD. Not a B10 AD. But an AD with teams that are rarely anywhere but the bottom of the ACC.

Problem #2 is John Ballein. He is the COO of the sports department. He is a joke. He lives in the past and longs for another Frank Beamer to come along. Beamer hired him and got him promoted him over and over. One thing VT does well is keep people forever no matter how bad they are at their job. Ballein might actually be problem #1, but since Whit could fire him and doesn't, I guess his boss Whit comes first.

Both of these guys (and Pry) are part of the Beamer style of football. They don't spend money. They will say they don't have it, but they are the reason VT alums don't give money. I stopped giving about 5 years ago when Pry was hired. The writing was on the wall as long as those two guys are there.

Problem #3 is the President of VT, Tim Sands. He's an engineer by trade. He has been there 11 years. Nothing has gotten better. VT has the best food in the nation on campus, but other than that when I go back I am completely unimpressed. It's grown. But it has not moved up academic or athletic rankings. He also extended Babcock not to long ago. It's the good ole boys paying the good ole boys. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.

None of these guys have a plan for what happens when the ACC dissolves (or FSU, UNC, UVA and MIA leave) for greener pastures. I'm sure they want to pretend they can get a top conference, but at this pace who wants us? The best chance is maybe the Big 12, which would be a win. But I think without some success in the next 5 years we are looking at a conferecne with the Marshall, ODU, JMU, WF and ECUs of the world. Heck , maybe that's where we belong and we can end this farce of trying to compete with the big boys.

Fundraising is the way out of this assuming they remove Babcock. They need someone with Northern VA or Richmond connections. Those 3 guys above from what I can tell despise NOVA. So they are stuck fundraising in Roanoke Lynchburg, and smaller towns. That is a losing proposition. . NOVA is where the money is, and Richmond has it but most of it goes to Univ of Richmond which is a swanky nice small school. You want big donations? Stop playing the Blacksburg good ole boys network and expand your mind. Sadly I doubt they will and Sands will stay.

I have limited hope for my school to get back top being a top 25 program. Some schools know how to get money (for instance GT, Vandy, UNC, Duke, and UVA are really doing it well these days). We are not even close to adapting to the new world of college sports, and don't really seem capable.

I moved to NOVA about six years ago and although I’m a lifetime Buckeye fan, I always admired VATech from afar and they are my de facto Virginia team. Not much of a UVA fan.

I’ve met several friends up here in NOVA that are Hokies and they are as frustrated as you are.

If all goes according to our plans, that region is our next stop (retirement) in about 10 years so I hope they get the sports figured out as I hope to take advantage of seeing multiple games in various Hokie sports each year.

GT didn't get a lot of money but have started to turn things around when they hired President Cabrera, who supports athletics. He hired a fund raiser from Alabama (J Batt), who did well and then left for Michigan State. Then he just hired an assistant from Tennessee, who has a fund raising background. Brent Key is the perfect coach for GT too.

I would think Frank Beamer could be a good fund raiser for VT but you're right, it starts with the leadership. UVA has a ton of money but either doesn't spend it or doesn't have a clue what they're doing. They do appear to be better this year than any year I can remember recently.

UVA hired Tyler Jones in July 2025 as the football GM. He also serves as the GM for mens and womens basketball, and baseball. The AD is the same woman Carla Williams that has been there a while. But UVA realized they needed a person to focus on their revenue producing sports. Jones seems to be doing very well thus far.

Half of the engineers in and around D.C. are VT grads. It's not like the school doesn't have a built-in toe-hold there if they choose to use it. Also, have they punted on Tidewater? They used to own that area.

USC is currently favored at Purdue this week by 21.5 points. If I were a betting man who was willing to bet against his team, I’d take the points. I do think USC wins, but I don’t think they’ll cover. This isn’t last year’s Purdue. Barry Odom came in and it appears he is getting things turned around, and their OC was at USC the last three years.

And I heard an interesting stat this morning. Do you know what USC’s record playing in the Central or Eastern time zone over the last 14 games is? The answer is 0-14.
Went to Purdue on a recruiting visit with my son, when Purdue played Ball State, I was highly impressed. We went last year on a recruiting trip, Purdue's world shifted 180 degrees from last year. Everything about them seemed more professional, they operated very systematically. In April my son was invited to a Spring practice I was talking one of the Directors of Recruiting, the topic of the Jugs football machines came up and Coach Odom stopped the meeting to ask if the machines were battery operated or plug in. The guy couldn't remember the answer because he was taken off base but the coach asking the question. There was something about how they ran their football operations I was highly impressed. I would not doubt seeing them pull off an upset or two and then eventually move up within the Big Ten.

What year is your son? Position?

I have always thought Purdue could be more than they typically are.

Love to hear more about your son’s journey! Will be rooting for him!
He's a junior, right tackle. I doubt he gets any offers, after seeing the linemen there he has a lot of growing to do.

So when coaches get canned players can hit the portal immediately. I didn’t know that. Quite a few ucla players have left the team and are visiting other schools this weekend. Seems crazy to me that is allowed mid-season. UCLA may not win a game.

With there only being 3 games into the season, I'd assume the younger players would transfer and then just be redshirts for the remainder of the year. Not sure about upperclassmen - if they want to do something like that.

That’s nuts.
