2025 Detroit Lions: 0-0 HOF Game on tape, as DC said..."We got work to do" (37 Viewers)

49ers drop 3rd straight, Lions will go into the bye as the NFC #2 seed regardless of Week 8 outcome as we lead in the tiebreaker

Amon-Ra St Brown added to Injury Report after the 1pm games began with illness

Nasty flu like bug going around, Mahomes played sick today and looked crappy

Gonna need Gibbs, LaPorta, Raymond and Reynolds to all chip in tomorrow night

home sick today so I’m goofing around listening to old MLB broadcasts (archive.org)

currently on Game 5 of the 1968 WS

Brock didn’t slide, Willie Horton hits Freehan on the fly from deep left to keep it at 3-2 Cards

53,000+ at Tiger Stadium goes wild

tell ya what we might come back & win this one….

(earlier I watched a 27 minute Frankenstein project - someone matched up film from the 1957 NFL Championship to the radio broadcast)
I was born in ‘66 in Detroit. My dad had a heating and cooling business. He used to service Willie Horton’s bar. In the early 70’s, Horton couldn’t pay his bill so he gave my dad an autographed ball of the ‘68 Tigers. I have the ball now - one of my most prized possessions.

The firm I worked for (Cooper & Lybrand, became PwC) in the 1990s had a good sized athlete & celebrity practice in the Detroit area. One year (either as an intern or Y1) I had to deliver some clients tax returns bc they didn't want to extend - this was like April 13 or something.
  • First up was a member of the Fisher Body family....gi-freaking-normous castle-mansion on the waterfront in Grosse Pointe.
  • Then all the way across I-696 to some private gated community off Telegraph & Lone Pine Rd. Ugliest McMansion I've ever seen, looked like an undergrad designed it. Didn't meet Joe Dumars but his wife was a smoke show.
  • Last one was hard to find pre-GPS....block from Telegraph but on a little bucolic lane ony 1-2 blocks long [edit - Bloomfield Twp.] Smallest house on the block, good sized double lot. Willie Horton in the flesh. I've never been so starstruck in my life. He was super gracious, offered me an iced tea I declined - kicked myself all the way home lol.
Much loved bc of his role as peacemaker during the 12th Street Riots in 1967, but also bc he was really the first black superstar in Detroit. Strongest man in MLB, can remember him breaking a bat in half whilst milling around the scuffle after Lerrin LaGrow drilled Bert Campaneris in the ankle in the ALCS & Campy threw his bat over the mound.

Vikings lose Cousins, JJ on IR Packers fall to 2-5
Bears (2-5) at LAC (2-4) SNF

Cousins popping his Achilles pretty much sealed the division.

No offense, no trying to trigger you....have you had an acuity test lately? Do you have a history of Alzheimer's in the fam? Very prevalent on both sides for me, I'm sensitive about the signs.

I'm thinking you can't recall 2013 when we started 6-3 and had a 1 game lead - with both of the teams chasing us without their starting QBs. Lost 6 of the last 7 to finish 3rd. Packers went 0-4-1 after Rodgers got hurt but won 3 of their last 4. Bears went 3-3 with McCown to roll by us, then Cutler came back to choke it away by losing the last 2.

I kid, I kid. That would never happen again, right?

Right?

Really need the win tomorrow to keep things going the right way.

Vikes cant go with Hall and will bring in a retread who can win a game or two. Lions signing Bridgewater gives them a somewhat better safety net than other NFC North teams.

There were rumors of Vikes trading Cousins before the deadline that were smoke.

We go into the toilet too with a Goff injury, can win the division but cant make it to NFC championship.

I'm not so sure. Teddy is competent, despite last week's evidence suggesting otherwise I think we have a good defense IMO. Soft schedule. But mostly bc I think the character of this team and this coach will not allow the season to go to waste. They'll have a home playoff game (maybe two) and who knows what might happen.
  • Raiders
  • bye week
  • at Chargers (who will be coming back from a MNF game with NYJ)
  • Bears
  • Packers on Thanksgiving
  • at Saints (former team of MCDC, AG & Teddy)
  • at Bears
  • Broncos
  • at Vikings
  • at Cowboys
  • Vikings
Still think we could land a 2 seed with Teddy. Just my opinion but this is a good roster, I'm not drinking kool aid here. We have a solid team that played one bad game. Most teams have had 2-3 bad games by now.

Teddy has carved out a really nice career as a QB2. But you want him holding a clipboard. He's had some really bad games for 5 different teams. Maybe 6 times is the charm. He also gets hurt, a lot. If Goff is out, Teddy would follow a game or two later.

Went 5-0 when Brees missed time. Vikings won a division title with him. I know what he is, and unquestionably the offense would be less efficient. But he would be a good game manager.

Since he missed a whole year (2016) he has had 3 concussions, which is less likely to happen when he isn't playing behind terrible OL. An MCL sprain that caused him to miss 1 game in 2020. A dislocated finger on his non-throwing hand, no time missed. you are welcome to label him soft or injury prone if that fits your perception. I see a seasoned pro that takes his preparation - and Jared's weekly prep, and the WR room's weekly prep, all as a backup - very seriously. If he doesn't throw a pass all year it was still a great get.

IMO

So the Lions traded Deandre Swift because he was not fully available due to injuries over his career and rumors of him playing soft.

Brought in Montgomery and he has played well but he’s the one who’s been unavailable as he has missed three games to injury and played minimally in a 4th.

Swift on the other hand has played in every game and has steadily taken control and is now the Eagles lead back. Haven’t heard of any concerns by the Eagles regarding his play.

Did the Lions blunder? Usually by now Swift would be dealing with some sort of nagging injury. Is Swift just happier playing In Philly and playing before his hometown?

Some guys just need a change of scenery, he never seemed happy in Detroit. And he went to one of the few teams in the league with a better offensive line.

Better QB, better WR combo, better defense, his hometown

I'm happy for Swift

It'd be easier for all of us to be happy for him if Gibbs would start busting off those explosives we thought we'd get when we took him at 12

He's a positionaless weapon, we're gonna line him up all over and use him in ways you wouldn't expecvt

6 weeks later....

He's a great change of pace back, especially with respect to what we have in Montgomery, the two are very complementary which is what we're all about

They traded D'Andre for a player they 1) thought was an upgrade, and 2) extended player control 4 years. Swift had one year left, they'll have Gibbs for five if they pickup his option.

Man alive....I hate it when people think 7 games is a sufficient evaluation period for a draft pick. We're so convinced if we don't get instant gratification then that means we never will.

Not directing that toward you alone @Moonlight you are a super level headed guy who lays out your logical path, just general commentary. That Gibbs player thread is a leading candidate for worst thread in TSP this year bc of all the dolts who took him around 2.12/3.01 in redraft.

By this time of the year I'm conditioned to discuss the next years draft so an update. With Carolina's win the bears have slipped to the #2 and #3 spots. The Lions are currently picking #25 per Tankathon. Oddly enough they are not predicting the Lions to pick a speedy offensive player from Alabama. Instead they have them chosing CB Nate Wiggins from Clemson.

We're picking 30th-32nd, right?

Right?

Day 1 - Cornerback
Day 2 - DL & Wide Receiver
Day 3 - Brad's speciality (at least before this year, TBD on Sorsdal & Green), haven't been diving into the 2024 class yet

We should never stop drafting OL Might let Jonah walk, Big V is also up.

The Robin Edge to Hutch's Batman could arrive later this week.

I remember the "3rd year" breakout for receivers...if it's not the 3rd week people freak out now

I am not sure I recovered yet from last week. A good performance this week might help, but with a deplete OL and Monty out and ARSB trending out, things are not trending in the right direction.

They should still beat the Raiders. The crowd will be insane. Personally I don't care how we play nor how the game goes. Just win any way you can and get to the much needed bye week.

A homecoming of sorts for Raiders’ Pro-Bowl DE @crosbymaxx, who just before tonight’s MNF matchup vs. the Lions, donated $1 million to Eastern Michigan University Athletics. Eastern will name its field after Crosby, who was named to the EMU Ring of Honor this off-season.

3rd or 4th best directional state school in Michigan* but nice work here, Maxx.

Bears and Packers are toast. Minny will struggle without Cousins.

Lions will win tonight. Even if they split with Minny the road it too tough now for the Vikings. Jon Janson said this morning that 9 wins will win the division now with Cousins out , but we need more than that for home field. Lions should end up with 11 wins, maybe 12. Minny will need to finish 7-2 without their starting QB and sweep Lions to win division.

Print the Division Champs shirts Bobby..and you can take that to the bank bromingo!

As far as the Alzheimer's. i think I might be early stage, just went to the store yesterday and forgot what I was there to buy. Did remember though.

  1. Won by 1 on the road
  2. Lost by 6 at home (OT)
  3. Won by 14 at home
  4. Won by 14 on the road
  5. Won by 18 at home
  6. Won by 14 on the road
  7. Lost by 32 on the road
  8. Favored by 7 at home
Line came down, eh? ARSB news + OL uncertainty.

Detroit 31, Las Vegas 20

Rich Eisen today:

Great schtick. Show was called Overreaction Monday if that helps.

This right here. IDC about how it looks stylistically. Just get the dub.

13-4 over their last 17, bounce back & keep the momentum going. Big win, sloppy win, lucky win, ugly win, I do not care about anything except a dub and (Lord willing) no injuries.

That said, the franchise record for points scored is 55.

Just saying I wouldn't mind seeing it....give the meatheads at the four letter networks 12 days to lose their minds, ya know.

Well Brown and Parsons have been very good. As Meatloaf said "Two out of three aint bad"

Gotta feel like Lions got a little cute on offense early, especially in the Red Zone. Potential TDs turned into FGs, and Detroit has to breathe a sigh of relief that Patterson was 4/5. "Shaky" is a kind way to call a K who hits a 52 yarder and misses one from 26. Raiders struggled to do anything on offense and got gashed on D, but turnovers kept the score dangerously close until the Gibbs TD.

So, not smooth. But still decisive. 6-2, 5 wins by double digits. The division is theirs to have if they keep afloat. Past that? Too early to say, but I can't complain about where they stand. Bye comes at a good time. Lions need to heal up, perhaps especially across the O-Line. Then it's onto the Chargers, which might feel like a home game for Detroit.

Coach Campbell postgame from the podium:
  • wasn't perfect but what I wanted most out of this game was getting our identity back
  • team was focused this week on getting back to what we do best
  • defense played outstanding - we can beat anyone when we play like that
  • take the runovers out, had one of the best rushing attacks of the season + explosives
  • Yode & Skipper & Sorsdal all stepped up up and battled at G, Decker and Sewell kept Maxx contained
  • we kept letting them back in, can't do that, but the defense bailed them out
  • missed FG + turnovers will hurt you most times, wins are hard to come by, we were very fortunate
  • in good shape for the division and the NFC is up for grabs
  • should get some guys healed up past the bye
  • last week was a tough loss, proud of how it didn't shake their confidence
  • we could tell Gibbs was feeling it so we wanted to keep feeding him
  • OL was outstanding in run blocking - over 200 yards rushing
  • the way we coach is all 69 guys (53+practice squad) know they could be the next man up, that mentality helps make everyone who is a competitor a better player
  • we had never worked Kayode & Sorsdal together but Hank thought they would give us good power
  • I can't type fast enough but named just about every DL who had any impact
  • we have the right guys when things go sideways like turnovers, guys don't get frustrated, it just steels their determination to get the ball back
  • our identity didn't show up at all in Baltimore, this week and this game was about focusing solely on getting back to being centered around running the ball and defense
  • Gibbs is not just a speed guy, he doesn't run on his tippy toes, we feel like he is just as effective inside
  • whether we do something or don't do something tomorrow (trade deadline), I have 100% confidence that Brad will do what is best for this team

reporter: This one of the tougher places you guys have played at all season?

Maxx Crosby: It was a dope environment, ya know. Detroit has got great history. Obviously I grew up loving the Lions. So I'm seeing them have success, it's bittersweet in a way, Ya know I got a lot of love for the whole state of Michigan and the whole city.

Coach ties Darryl Rogers (1985-88) for 11th place in all-time wins
  • Campbell 18-23-1 .440
  • Rogers 18-40-0 .310
Rogers famously asked reporters "what does someone have to do to get fired around here?"

Next up in 10th place is somebody I have literally never heard of, Gus Dorais.

He coached Gonzaga for 5 years before going on to coach University of Detroit for 18 years. He is - by a country mile - the winniest HC in the Titans history, going 113-48-7 (.693.) ASIDE - While at Gonzaga, he coached John Stockton's grandfather.

The Lions hired him during the war and he went 20-31-2 (.392) from 1943 to 1947. The guy who replaced gus, Bo McMillen, posted a .333 over three years before the glory days of Buddy Parker began.

It is truly amazing how many bad coaches they have had over the last 90 seasons. So grateful for Dan Campbell.

Imagine bookending him with Hutch

“Meet me at the quarterback”

“Bet, cya there.”

A little cute are good words for it.

When it works we talk about the creativity of the offense. When it doesn’t it usually results in lost yardage and opportunity.
Tonight it wasn’t working, part of it was due to the Raiders penetration.
