2025 Detroit Lions: 0-0 HOF Game on tape, as DC said..."We got work to do" (93 Viewers)

DC on Williams:

“The more that he earns his stripes here, the more opportunities he gets,” Campbell said. “Every time he makes a block like he does or he runs the routes he’s running, he makes some catches -- you just gain the trust of everybody around you.”

Williams only has eight catches for 89 yards and one touchdown in the five games since returning from suspension. He missed the first four games due to a violation of the NFL’s gambling policy.

Hey I know our defense is awful and AG should be on the hot seat and Jack Campbell isn’t Him yet but a couple tree tings…

• 2nd rushing D by yards, 3rd in ypg
• 8th total D by scrimmage yards
• 3rd lowest in penalties, 4th lowest in pen yards, we're very disciplined
• 3rd place in QB hurries, 10th in pressure rate
• 10th lowest in blitz rate
• 6th in YAC against us
• 12th lowest in completions allowed
• 3rd lowest in punt return yards allowed

We do need to clean up some things. Pass rush needs to get home more. But a week ago we were talking about insanely dominant they were on MNF.

Lot of games on the remaining schedule where the Lions are going to have good weeks.

  • Dallas @ Carolina Kevin Burkhardt, Greg Olsen
  • LA Chargers @ Green Bay Kevin Kugler, Mark Sanchez
  • Chicago @ Detroit Adam Amin, Mark Schlereth
  • NY Giants @ Washington Kenny Albert, Jonathan Vilma
  • Tampa Bay @ San Francisco Joe Davis, Daryl John
That’s my Sling glitch games this week. I have Sling Blue & Sling Orange with a local package for Fox & NBC. When I set my dvr to record “all NFL games” it doesn’t just record TNF, SNF, MNF, & the local Giants game - it goes out and finds every local affiliate game on Fox. I never miss an NFC game on Fox. Since you can watch live games while they record, I basically have 1/2 NFL Ticket for free.

Few weeks ago wifey had a friend doing her annual in town for the day visit and I had the apt to myself. I had games going on simultaneously on the Mac, MacBook, iPad, iPhone & big screen LG. Man alive it was like being back in the frat house for 10 hours lol.

Interesting line movement in this game. Early line before last week's games was -7.5 which eventually moved to 9.5. Once Fields looked ok to play it dropped back to 7.5.

On a related note the current line for the Thanksgiving game vs the Packers is also 7.5.

Without a doubt our run defense has been very stout. The pressure rate is more a function of the coverage which has been pretty good. If you look at the time we allow the QB to have we are amongst the worst in the league, so the high pressure is inflated. Maybe we will get lucky and Irvin will help. We will be lucky if Houston is ready by playoff time from the last I heard.

St Brown returning punts this week?

Kalif Raymond has an ankle injury. If that limits his availability for Sunday, Fipp said Donovan Peoples-Jones, St. Brown or Khalil Dorsey could serve as fill-in options.

I imagine it’ll be DPJ but would be interesting

Seems like a perfect time to fire up DPJ but they also might feel like he's just not up to speed enough at WR to warrant activating

I'd also say the Chargers and Ravens have damn good offenses. They've torched many of the defenses they've played.

After the Ravens shredded the Lions they did the exact same thing to the Seahawks. Last week they put up 31 on Cleveland who has one of the top defenses in the league.

The Chargers have an elite passing offense. Keenan Allen is playing out of his mind.

The Lions defense doesn't seem able to slow down those kind of offenses yet. I don't think SF has that kind of offense. Philly does and Dallas does occasionally.

I don't know much about this guy even though I follow him and we have mutuals. I like a lot of what he has to say here but caveat emptor.

@Lion4lifedet

I finished rewatching every def. snap VS LAC. All blame should not be on AG but he does deserve some. Here were my observations: A thread

1. Best defense is us sending 5 every time. It’s what we did at the beginning of the game then AG stopped and we started getting cooked

2. We don’t have the personnel to run man at ALL! We need to rush 5 and play zone. It’s rough when you okay better QBs but it won’t give up big plays and also stops the run. We get killed in man. Only guy who can cover man to man 8/10 times is Cam Sutton…..

BobbyLayne - we seldom play man lately and are like 31st in Blitz %.

3. Kerby needs to be benched but we don’t have anyone else good enough to play over him. He is playing awful and we need CJGJ back asap. Kerby still is athletic he just isn’t playing like he was last year. Looks like he’s just doing what he wants to. Not playing fundamentally.

BobbyLayne - bad take IMO, Joseph's coverage has been very good this year.

4. We have 1 good LB. Anzalone. Barnes needs to be blitzing almost every play. We need the speed from him right now. He is bad at reading the holes in the run game and even worse in man coverage and even worse in zone. Campbell is a rookie. He needs time.

BobbyLayne - agreed AA is our best LB, but Jack Campbell has been coming on and played his best game v Chargers. Barnes has been seeing his snaps decrease. Rodriguez is strictly short yardage these days when he's not playing fullback *(and to be honest I'm pretty excited about the latter.)

5. As I said earlier, we can’t generate pass rush with 4. Our best lineup with that is Julian, Alim, Comish, and Hutch. Only 2 would be starting on another team. We HAVE to bring 5 because when we do it speeds up the timing just enough to hurry the QB. Sucks but that’s the truth.

BobbyLayne - Benito and Isaiah ain't sexy but you need them in the rotation as run stuffers.

6. Branch looks like a rookie to me right now. He’s biting too much and not sticking to his assignment. He’ll be fine but needs more time. Tracy is the best safety we have right now and he doesn’t even do anything special. He’s just sticking to his assignments for the most part.

BobbyLayne - his play has fallen off since he came back from injury.

7. Truth is we only have 6 guys healthy that would start on other teams right now. Hutch, Alim, Anzalone, Sutton, Tracy, and Branch. AG is doing his best but he’s not sticking to what works. He needs to trust himself more and realize he doesn’t have the pieces to do what he wants

BobbyLayne - dude is losing his mind here. Do we have the depth of Philadelphia or San Francisco? Of course not. But that takes years of stacking drafts. We have a lot of quality role players, they're not all going to grade out 80+.

8. AG needs yet another year to get the right defensive pieces but also needs to start sending pressure constantly. We have a lot of holes and that’s not going to bode well for us down the line. Lets just hope CJGJ and Houston can be ready to go both by the wildcard!

BobbyLayne - I think Bruce Irvin might have something left in the tank. Houston should be back soon. Good lord I swear Lions fans have the memory of a goldfish. Team had six sacks in a dominant performance on MNF 11 days ago. Guess what, the Lions play a s***-ton of bad offenses in the next six weeks and these same morons will be posting we look like the 1985 Bears bc we can beat up on bad OLs and bad QBs.

IMO the defense is not broken, but AG is calling games too conservatively.

We had two early stops and a turnover against the Chargers. Then we started rushing four and playing soft zoen.

Coach talks a lot about the players trusting each other. How about you trust the players, Coach?

If the Lions cannot generate pass rush or play tight coverage, it doesn't matter how efficient the offense plays.

Look at the film from the Seahawks, Ravens, and Chargers games. We struggle mightily v mobile quarterbacks who get through their progressions bc the pass rush is so late getting home. We were terrible on third down in these games and those are kinds of QBs/offenses we will see January 14, 21 & 28.

Week 10 was really egregious. Feel like the last three quarters we played solely to not give up big plays, refused to try risky coverages or blitzes (and inexplicably no stunts.) IMO it was a tactical error and prevented the Lions from putting the game away.

Hutch just can`t get home being doubled almost every play.

When I watch the games with my wife and she says "Why is Hutch not getting sacks?" I say because he is being double blocked almost every play.

She responds "Well if that is the case that should leave it open for another guy right?' I had no answer as she made it sound too simple.

Don't completely discount the Bruce Irvin signing. Even at 36 he is probably an upgrade over Cominski and Okwara. He will be a good mentor to Houston (oh please come back this year) and he is a great locker room presence and a dog on the field.

Send. Five.

Goodness my 15 year old daughter understands what is wrong, why doesn't AG see that?

Last Q of his presser today, they asked Dan Campbell directly about the Texas A&M rumors, inquiring if they had actually reached out to him.

"Maybe. Look, I love my school. Alright? Aa a proud alumni I want to do anything I can to help them but coach."

mic drop, walks out to go to practice

James Houston IV non-update update from MLive
ALLEN PARK -- James Houston remains on track to return in time for the playoffs.

The Detroit Lions edge rusher hasn’t played since fracturing his ankle in Week 2, but he is now out of a boot and was working on the side with a trainer during Friday’s practice. Houston hopes to return to the team next month, and be full-go in time for the postseason.

“I do think this (injury) is one you can come back from pretty quickly once it’s healed and he’s out and about,” head coach Dan Campbell told 97.1 The Ticket this week. “But he still has to get out there, he’s got to practice, get his feet under him, get the mental side of it. So, I don’t know. Until he’s out there, it’s hard to say what he’s going to look like.”

The Lions could certainly use the help in their pass rush, where they’ve produced one sack or none at all in six of their nine games this season. Aidan Hutchinson has been good, racking up 4.5 sacks and 52 pressures -- that’s third most in the league -- but the rest of the edge rushers combine for just 4.5 sacks and 58 pressures.

Detroit tried benching Charles Harris in favor of Julian Okwara in recent weeks, but that hasn’t been the answer either. More recently, it signed former Seahawks pass rusher Bruce Irvin to the practice squad. Irvin isn’t in football shape though, and probably needs another week before he’s ready to contribute.

I expect Kayode Awosika will get the start at LG but there are three possible options.
  • Awosika has started two games (Week 6 and 8) at left guard this season.
  • Rookie Colby Sorsdal also started in Week 8, but at right guard.
  • Dan Skipper, their preferred swing Tackle/6th OL in heavy sets, hasn’t started any games this season, he did have four starts at left guard in 2022 for the Lions.

The Lions have covered the spread in 11 straight games against the NFC North.

Gonna get hit, gonna go down. James Houston - got 'em! I see you 41, that was a BIG TIME play.

Sadly I can't quite grasp all the details. I don't even know if it was this season but man oh man do I want to sees Houston bring a butt whooping to Dobbs so badly.

James, Bruce Irvin, someone has to step up. The "& Friends" part of the crew is fine against mediocre OLs and mid QBs. AG turtles up v good teams and mobile QBs a bit - just refuses to send 5 or play press man.

Last guy you'll catch me rooting against. I wish the Lions success, but maybe on another day for James Houston.
Yeah, Dobbs is a nice story. I have nothing against him but if you take a snap against Detroit, I will be like a bloodthirsty Roman in the coliseum rooting for a Lion to bite a kneecap off your love thy neighbor christian leg.

Best story in football IMO

Saw him on Bussin' with the Boys last year, he's a good dude, been grinding on practice squads for years. Five teams, couple of them twice so really like 7 squads. Love seeing a grinder finally get a chance and he freaking balls tf out.

Absolutely but also we know how this story ends. He's a career backup. He will remain a career backup. Kurt Warner happens once in a lifetime, right?

and that is no insult. Being a career NFL backup QB is amazing, We could all be so lucky.

Geno Smith?

Hey, ya never know. Humble man, I really like him a lot. He's good at football and he is good for football.

He will remain a career backup. Kurt Warner happens once in a lifetime, right?

Most likely, yes. Warner took a circuitous route that very few do. The one thing Dobbs has in his favor is that he's got such an ability to process information that he's not precluded from anything, really. And his time with the Steelers was in one system, a system that might not have been suited to his talents. So we really don't know. We know what he did in TN last year with no time.

It's up for grabs, really. But, yes, likely a career backup.

It kind of is rocket science and he kind of is a RL rocket scientist, so yeah, dude has a big powerful noodle.

and while you are at it, Rock, please perform a miracle on Mark Andrew's ankle.

I am intentionally staying away from the thread - TSP just suxors at nuance and if it hasn't already it will only devolve into the knuckle draggers (just put a skirt on them if we're playing flag football) v the player safety advocates - but we have to outlaw the hip drop. It's asking too much of the human body to withstand a 250+ guy pulling down with the full force of their weight.

I don't even have an opinion, I just want my TE back :(

This is a treat for us old timers, just got uploaded two weeks ago. Not just a 1970 broadcast, but restored/enhanced to 1080p/60fps.

Week 12 - St Louis Cardinals (8-2-1) at Detroit Lions (7-4-0) December 6, 1970

The Lions are fresh off that epic 28-14 Thanksgiving comeback against the Oakland Raiders. The two highest scoring teams in the NFL at the time (at just over 25 ppg lol), and the Cardinals defense had a midseason stretch where they won three straight shutouts and then tied the defending Super Bowl IV Champs Kansas City 6-6. Imagine that, six points in four weeks! When they beat the Cowboys 38-0 on MNF they looked like the best team in football. They ended up losing their last 3 and missed the playoffs at 8-5-1.

Good ole Tiger Stadium - 24 degrees with 25 mph winds bringing the wind chill down to 8 degrees.

So many details to take in: both benches are on the same side of the field, the goal posts are on the goal line, both kickers are straight on kickers, crew is 6 officials (no side judge), field is chewed up, players uniforms are not form fitted like today, ferocious hits, no microphone announcements from the referee, both RBs in a 3 point stance.

Jim Hart slinging it, Greg Landry scrambling. Larry Wilson and Roger Wehrli v Barney, LeBeau, Rasmussen and Weger.

Not much of a game, 4 FGs and 1 TD, but Lem Barney and Charlie Sanders have a great game. Mel Farr and Altie Taylor with solid days rushing, John Gilliam is pretty much the entire Cards offense. Still neat to see (for me at least), love the clarity of this enhanced footage. So happy that someone is curating these games.

Miller Farr intercepted a pass from Landry and Mel Far helped slow him down on the return. Later Mel catches a pass and gets tackled by his brother.

First 9:25 is NFL Films footage, mostly from ground level, then the CBS broadcast coverage (Jack Whitaker and Tom Brookshire) kicks in midway through the second quarter.

My buddy that I went to college with who now lives in Dallas sends me a text saying. "Hey..Detroit is 7-2 and with the Eagles tough schedule the Dallas-Detroit game might be for you having the #1 seed"

This is such uncharted waters for me as a Lion fan. #1 seed? We have not had a playoff win since 1991.

I was born and raised in Detroit, not a rich suburb like Bobby.

To read and hear this talk is difficult to digest. To GB, Dallas, Philly, NE, and others have all been there many times. We NEVER have. Please say it is real.

Even though they are TD+ favorites in both, the next 2 games are huge ones. Minnesota has been looking solid recently and Lions have to keep/build that division lead. 🦁

Hey Bobby, that link is taking me to a Lions/Bears preview just to let you know !! I clicked on it to have a watch of that game and see how it looked like all cleaned up

Even though they are TD+ favorites in both, the next 2 games are huge ones. Minnesota has been looking solid recently and Lions have to keep/build that division lead. 🦁

Never thought I’d be backing Russell Wilson. That guy gives me the total cringe but hoping the Broncos can continue a recent better trend and end Vikings run

Hate to get all technical after a great win, but this shows how much they overcame, even with their own mistakes.
