I was riding in a cab in Vegas the week of the draft talking to him about all the stuff going on, and he said his uncle was pencil ****, to which I had no comment for since I wanted to get to my destination.
 
In Bill Belichick’s Wednesday press conference his affinity for Detroit's special teams felt genuine. Called Jack Fox one of the best punters in the league and "a weapon," referencing his throwing ability on top of the leg. Belichick also said Chris Board might be the best special teams player the Patriots see all season.

Michael Badgley, who scored all 12 of the Bears points Sunday, was released and signed to the Lions practice squad. He'll kick Sunday if Seibert's groin doesn't improve.

Lions are getting Jonah Jackson back at practice today. Campbell said they're still day to day with the injuries, no word yet on whether St. Brown, Swift, etc., will be ready Sunday, but he said they feel better at least.

(7 mins ago) Swift (shoulder) isn't practicing Wednesday, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.
All five of Detroit's starting skill-position players were held out of practice, including three (Swift, Amon-Ra St. Brown, DJ Chark) who missed Sunday's shootout loss to Seattle. With a bye coming up in Week 6, it won't be surprising if the Lions err on the side of caution this Sunday in New England, especially after Jamaal Williams scored two more TDs in the Week 4 loss. That said, the Lions haven't ruled out any of the injured players, including Swift.

Goff said the thing about Tom Kennedy is he’s always in the right spot. Been grinding away for 4 years now? Athlete but for him it’s always gonna be taking the leftover scraps after Josh, TJ, et al, soak up the high quality targets. Short arms, insane 3-cone.

Is this more of a grudge match for Lions players or for Patricia? With so much of the roster turnover for Detroit I would think Patricia probably.
Nothing Patricia would like better than to slap the Lions around. But if he is coordinating the NE offense its got to give the Lions more of a chance.

What do you think, a low or high scoring game? I'm thinking an under but what do I know.
 
Doubt very much Swift will play, really no reason when they are putting up 40+ without him. Needs to get to 100%.

hard to believe Jackson has missed so much time with a finger injury. Thought those guys just wrapped the fingers up tight.

Browns ankle must have been bad, hopefully it does not linger as he is our best WR and was having a great start.

Was listening to NFL Radio yesterday and Goff was getting some pretty high praise for leading the Lions high scoring offense. Nice to hear.

Patriots have one of the strangest rosters in the NFL. Spent all of TC and PS trying to install a Shanahan style wide zone rushing offense, abandoned that plan after the Week 1 disaster in Miami Gardens. Want to run 12 personnel, finally realized Hunter Henry has no blocking capability. WR Lil’ Jordan Humphrey is running 2-TE sets bc they’ve removed Henry from all blocking schemes. Wanted to put more on Mac Jones - adot is 10.6, up from last year’s 8.3, but he doesn’t have the skill set. 2 TDs 5 INT vs 22-13 a year ago.

Basically scaled it back to the [early season] 2021 rookie playbook, settling for the dump offs bc they want the ball out quick. They won’t ask much from Zappe IMO. Run game is back to their bread n butter gap scheme, duo, counter. They’ll try to play field possession and limit the pace/number of possessions. Took the Packers to OT in Lambeau despite being outgained 277-451 (big return game and pick six kept them in it.). Ran a ton of jumbo with 2TEs & extra tackle.

Defensively they have excellent CBs, but their Safeties are exploitable. Packers gashed them for 199 and the Ravens (mostly Lamar) 188 the week before.

17 Lions on the injury report this week, 11 missed at Ieast one practice, 6 already declared out (WRs Quintez Cephus & DJ Chark. DL John Cominsky, DE Charles Harris, OT Matt Nelson, RB D’Andre Swift.)

With Nelson out I suspect Dan Skipper (started at G last 3 weeks) will take the jumbo role. Jonah Jackson will be back at LG. Evan Brown (Q ankle) is slated to continue at RG.

Demetrius Taylor (UDFA, U of M) was expected to be in the rotation for the first time this week, then Harris injured his groin late in practice Thursday. Austin Bryant, Hutch and Taylor…man I can’t wait for Comiskey and Paschal to get healthy. Feel like Aidan would be more effective if he wasn’t playing so many snaps (compared to other Edge rushers.)

They’re talking about getting Julian Okwara more snaps. Barnes is mostly STs, doesn’t seem to be developing.

IDK what to say about Amani Oruwariye. They’re blitzing more than anyone (bc the front 4 can’t generate pressure on its own) and he’s making basic inside leverage errors. If you have no safety help you can’t do that - my freaking 13 year ballerina understands that.

After last week they supposedly were doing a complete assessment / overhaul of the defensive assignments / combinations. Lot of talk about the lack of trust on defense - from coaches, players, even Goff brought it up. Aaron Glenn under tremendous pressure (as he should be.) It’s embarrassing Seattle’s punter had the day off. SEATTLE!

Patriots are running the ball well. Lions have shown no ability to stop counters or cutbacks. Doesn’t matter if ARSB can go or not, if they can’t get off the field they’ll have no chance of winning.

I’m expecting their lowest combined scoring game of the year. Punts and kick coverage will be critical. Can’t turn the ball over (that’s been a strength so far this year.) Not even gonna say what I think the defense needs to do bc rn I don’t think they can. Would be great if I’m wrong.

Yeah the prospect of having to win a lower scoring game doesn't sound promising but that might be where we're at this week. Someone, anyone on D has to step up or it might be a long day of Harris & Stevenson up the gut.

I read and listen to a ton of Detroit local media. These three are the only level headed sources in town (discounting O’Hara & Twentyman bc they work for the team.) Everybody else is driving clicks/ratings, way too unbalanced bc they’re so emotional.

None of this sounds very encouraging regarding the defense. This is the type of stuff you say when you don't really have a plan.

Low scoring. The Pats don't have the personnel or coaches on offense for any type of shootout. The reality is that most of their starters wouldn't start for any other team. They are basically the Lions from a couple years ago with Matty Patty, but with BB keeping things interesting on defense. This Pats team is going to finish last in the AFC East. The Lions can win if they just run the football and limit turnovers.
 
Picked the Pats with Zippy at QB in the offense/defense thread.

That doesn't speak well of my view of the Lions D. I hope they turn it around, I just don't see how.

NE will run all day and limit possessions for DET. Goff hasn’t been very good against NE defense. The Patriots are better than people are making them out to be. They should be able to win this one at home, even with a QB making his first career start.
 
Lions are 4th in hurries, 9th in pressures, 10th in QB Hits & Knockdowns, 29th in sacks. 3 of their 7 sacks were Aidan in the first half vs the Commanders, 4 sacks in the other 14 quarters. #1 In blitzes (technically the Broncos lead 65-64 but in one more game.) Only 9 teams have fewer Tackles For Loss. Dead last in rushing TDs allowed (10) and YPC.

Supposed to see Hutchinson in a 2 point stance more this week. We’ll see.

Lions are on their 7th kicker of the Campbell era. Career FG% of Michael Badgley is 22nd amongst active Kickers, 11th in career PATs. I’ll take mediocre all day. Kickers cost us a couple Ws since Prater walked.

It could def be worse. The Jaguars have gone through 13 Kickers since 2020, at one point using five kickers in 5 weeks. TBF anything attached to Urban Meyer should probably have an asterisk.

But Jax has stabilized now. Riley Patterson is 7/8 (lg 52) and perfect on PATs. He was 13/14 on FGAs as a rookie and didn’t miss a PAT kicking for Detroit.

Elliott has been terrible. Oruwariye has been terrible. Mike Hughes has been terrible. All are being benched. It certainly can't be any worse.

SOL today, so many mistakes, missed opportunities and injuries.
 
Another highlight from today another Goff pick6 but in fumble gear.

After giving away games to Seattle and Vikes we certainly established negative momentum.

Seattle beat NO at NO and is looking improved. Vikes almost gave away games to Bears.

Made Seahawks look like the Greatest show on Turf, and now the struggling Patriots with their 3rd string QB march in and look like SB Champs. With Patricia laughing all the way to the bank by literally making the Lions pay for the privilege.
Mistakes all over. So many injuries I think we started lining up Tom Kennedy at CB. Looking possibly worse than any time last year, and that's saying something. Though at least Detroit has 1 win, because I struggle to see how they can beat anybody after the last two (three?) games.
Get healthy, get some players back on both sides. We'll see if the team has any "grit" left in 2 weeks.

I like DC but Not sure he is cut out to be a HC, seems like he would be a great special teams coach, motivator. Being a HC involves being able to manage the game situations, the clock, the TOs, DC has floundered in all those phases so far.

Hutch got pushed around again today, had a chance at one sack but Zappe evaded him. Right now, just about any FA DE would be contributing as much.

Hoping things will get better with Hutch, if it does not that will hurt. Holmes has invested early picks in the d-line and they have not panned out so far.

They miss Cominsky. He had 10 pressures in first 2 games and had the pressure against Wentz that won the Lions the Washington game. He made Hutchinson better.

Yeah I'm gonna tap out for awhile. These last 3 games....I wouldn't say it broke me as a fan, but Imma take mini-break from the Lions. Canceled my NFL app subscription (just the RZ & local radio, not a full subscription) that I use to listen the games.
  • I said all summer Holmes is the best talent evaluator the Lions have had at GM. While I still believe that, we've never known what successful roster construction looks like. On a relative scale, he's the right guy. He deserves a full tenure to see how this plays out. At some point, he has probably earned the right to pick his own coach.

  • We all love the former (recent) players as coaches. Clearly some of them are pretty good (Randle El, Fraley, TBD on Sheppard, Pleasant) at their job. Ben Johnson is a very good OC. But you have to wonder if they actually understand what it takes to win in the NFL

  • AG is the wrong DC. There are some guys who talk a really good game and seem like they know what they're doing, but the results show they're actually grossly incompetent. I think that's the deal with Aaron Glenn. I know there were a lot of holes to fill, but this is absurd. He inherited a defense which, the last two years of Quinntricia, were the two worst defensive teams in the Lions 90 year history. They drafted and signed a bunch of new players, and it's somehow become worse. I didn't think that was possible. IDK if they should switch midseason bc I'm not sure Aubrey would be any better.

  • Goff is a bit like Kurt Cousins at this point, or maybe Derek Carr. Not saying he's better than either, but a few things seem obvious. He's never going to be the guy. Give him a clean pocket and surround him with weapons, he can be adequate. He does not elevate teammates. At $30.6M and $31.6M, his cap hit the next two seasons is middle of the pack - reasonable. I'm OK with keeping him on that basis. 2023 is a VERY deep QB class. I want both 1st round picks spent on defensive players. Meaning Day 2 QB, meaning probably not ready for 2023. But roll with Goff for the next two and see if Brunell can coach the Day 2 QB up.

  • MCDC is not an NFL level head coach. He is a great motivator and everyone likes him. But he's too erratic, on both sides of the ball their overly aggressive style hurts the team. I don't think I really need to go deep into this. Everyone sees it. I don't know when is the right team to move on, but at this point I don't think it's if, it's just a question of when. I had a lot of doubts about him after last year. Not because of the record, but because I don't think he makes good decisions. At the end of the day - I've said this dozens of times in this thread - the cultural shift and positivity have translate into wins. Maybe he evolves, maybe Holmes brings in way more talent. Maybe. Right now it looks like his high school let's get fired up spirit is not the recipe for success at the professional level.
Imma be away for awhile. I have Jamo stashed on IR and will see three late season games on TV: Thanksgiving and the two Met Life games. But other than that, I'm out for awhile.

I have a nice, simple life on Sundays. My bride and I go to church, have brunch with friends, go to the park or museum. The Lions are just this big ole pile of frustration. I'm at a point in life where I'm cool with cutting off people or things that are more trouble than they're worth. This team is just something I need less of right now. It's not something that is worth getting upset about or going on a tirade. I'll just let them go for awhile, I have other things/people I'd prefer to invest in.

My one daughter had a Lion watch party. About 20 people most in their middle to late 20s, and my wife and I.

They have a 70 inch TV mounted in their garage. With the garage door open on a crisp fall day it is great to watch football there.

What is comical is that during the game I heard at least 10 times if not more the SOL term from different people. Lions blow, Lions suck.

And these are younger people that have not been exposed to 30-40 years of this nonsense like we have. A whole new younger generation are already Lionized,
