2025 Detroit Lions: 4-1 Lions win battle of the big cats. (63 Viewers)

Have to watch the condensed replay, but impressions from just the radio & Red Zone…

First half: punt, 70 yard drive TD, 57 yard drive FG, punt. Not bad offense with how depleted they were. Disappointing giving up the late FG but they forced a few punts, good showing so far.

10-17, get the ball first to open the 2nd half. Score there and we got a ballgame.

2nd play, Igwebuike fumble. Denver takes advantage of the short field, 36 yard drive TD. OK, gonna be an uphill battle but one play and we’re in this thing.

Sack, whatever, 3rd & 22 hit Reynolds for a 20 yarder. 4th & 2 at our own 33, let’s not be stupid here. Game is still winnable.

And for…I’ve lost count, 3rd/4th/5th time, Campbell goes for it on 4th inside their own 40 (actually 33 yard line.) Just freaking handed the game to Fangio on a silver platter. 4 plays, 33 yards, TD, have you tried the queso blanco yet bc this thing is over.

Love our HC the motivator. Hate our HC the in game  decision maker.

He has to do better.

Perriman can`t make the Lions roster of depleted WRs yet now plays for Tampa Bay and Tom Brady with Lions paying the bulk of his salary.

I’m not following. Dude is a trash bag, they set him the on the curb.

You think it was a mistake to release him? He has  4 catches in 4 G w/ TB. Big whoop, he had a 58 yard TD yesterday. He is fast….you know he catches a long bomb TD every year, right? Who cares, he’s not a good football player. 7 teams in 6 years, ‘nufced.

Bad signing? Probably. But they needed bodies and 1-yr, &2.5M (2M guaranteed) is just about the cheapest you can sign any veteran WR. Took a shot, didn’t work out, move on.

I agree for the most part.   From what i heard from my TB buddy is Brady had a say in his signing. Pretty sure Brady has a say with all the WRs signings.

To end up being cut by the 1 win Lions and making a possible Super Bowl team is a feat in itself not matter how it turns out.

Chicago doesn’t exactly have a world class WR room. Mooney is a WR3, ARob12 is MIA, Marquis Goodwin & Jakeem Grant & Dennis Byrd have played big roles of late. They ate $1M of Perriman’s salary over 8 weeks, wasn’t active even once.

______________

PFF preliminary evaluation pending final review below.

Underwhelming seems like a good one-word catch all.

DETROIT LIONS

Quarterback

The biggest mistakes didn’t come from Jared Goff in this game, but that’s not to say that he did much to elevate the offense, either. Goff had another typically underwhelming performance, completing 24-of-39 pass attempts for just 5.5 yards per attempt and a negative EPA per play of -.260.

Running Back

Godwin Igwebuike fumbled the ball at a crucial time, and he finished with just eight attempts for 25 yards. Craig Reynolds handled 11 carries, gaining a much healthier 83 yards, 72 of which came after contact.

Wide Receiver/Tight End

Amon-Ra St. Brown is the clear No. 1 receiver in this Detroit offense, which tells its own story in terms of the quality of the receiving options available to Goff. He had 11 targets, catching eight of them for 73 yards. Just two of those catches moved the chains for a first down.

Routes Run / targets / receptions / YPRR

 ARSB 37 / 11 / 8 / 1.97

Reynolds 34 / 5 / 3 / 1.53

Raymond 31 / 5 / 4 / 1.00

Zylstra 24 / 4 / 2 / 0.75

Wright 15 / 5 / 3 / 1.33

(ASIDE - for context, guys like Adams, Jefferson and Juop are between 2.6 and 3.1 YPRR)

Offensive Line

Detroit’s offensive line was solid overall, though center Ryan McCollum did surrender some pressure on the interior. On initial grading, McCollum accounted for as much pressure as the rest of the offensive line combined, surrendering pressure on 11.1% of his pass-blocking reps. Rookie Penei Sewell had another strong game, allowing just a pair of hurries from 34 pass-blocking snaps.

Defensive Line

The Lions cycled through a lot of bodies up front in an attempt to slow down Denver’s rushing attack, but none of them could really make a consistent impact and make more than the occasional play. Nick Williams, Levi Onwuzerike, Michael Brockers, Alim McNeill, John Penisini and Bruce Hector all saw at least 10 snaps on defense just among interior linemen.

Linebackers

Josh Woods was the most active Lions linebacker against the run, playing 35 snaps of run defense and making nine tackles, double that of any other defender. Four of those tackles were defensive stops and his average depth of tackle was for a 3.3-yard gain.

Secondary

Denver’s rushing attack was so successful it was a relatively quiet day for the Lions secondary. Nickell Robey-Coleman was the most active cornerback in coverage with three targets and two catches given up. The main area of attack was over the middle against safeties, with Will Harris the most targeted player on the team with four shots into his coverage. He allowed two catches for 20 yards, but had a forced incompletion on the positive side of his ledger.

Josh Woods took over the green dot helmet after Anzalone was hurt.

This is a player who had four defensive snaps in 2021 before week 13.

That's wild.

Dave Campbell said Jerry Jacobs' injury has a 9 month recovery. I saw it termed a significant ACL injury so I'm assuming it's a torn ACL. Really a shame because he has been the most improved player on this team. He can definitely play.

I saw Jerry’s Tweet last night, just heartbreaking. To see a UDFA guy play so well and get better every week, then to have this happen - you feel for the guy.

But like DC said, known injury, known procedure and known rehab. There was a time (no too long ago) these things were career enders. Now it’s like, OK, first year, 90% back, second year, better than ever. Put in the work, good things will happen.

After 5 weeks, Penei Sewell was the 50th ranked OT.

He had some good games - notable Week 1 v Nick Bosa - but struggled in pass pro. Little better ar run blocking. He played the first 6 G at LT, and then moved back to RT when Decker returned from IR.

WEEKS 6-13 (7 G) Sewell was the 5th best T (& best rookie OL.) Absolute road grader and rarely gave up a pressure. For the season, allowed 2 sacks in his first 12 G. Terrific games against Myles Garrett and Aaron Donald. Crazy a (barely) 21 year old tackle is this good already.

Week 14 versus Denver highest rated OL in the NFL. 2 hurries, no pressures, no hits on the QB. 93.5 in run blocking and 91.0 overall.

He just keeps getting better and better..

@PFF_Bet

Highest graded RB in Week 14 (min. 25 snaps)

Craig Reynolds (84.0)

Sewell is a beast. This line is playing great and that's without Frank Ragnow, one of the best (if not the best) centers in the NFL. It's been years since I've seen RBs having huge holes to run through and that has included 3rd, 4th, and 5th string RBs.

We haven't even had an average line for years. This line has the potential to be the best line in the NFL. This is the biggest strength for this team going forward.

Yeah, the play of the line has been extraordinary. The off we team  know we’re going to run. The whole stadium knows Detroit is going to run. Still can’t shut it down.

Look at the 3 scrubs who have all excelled at different points. 5th stringer is the highest rated RB in his first game. I don’t think Lynn or Deuce are cooking up any crazy good schemes, just basic plays being executed well.

Hockenson out for the year...the hits keep coming.

The only positive thing I've heard about Swift is "he's getting better." OK, but it's mid-December, he got hurt 22 days ago, and hasn't done anything in practice except "moving around a bit." Hock was another one who was moving around a bit. The season ends in 23 days.

:oldunsure:

It goes against my best interests if I survive this round, but might as well shut down the keepers and see what you have now behind them. A sort of free training camp to see who you want to bring back and which holes to fill first.

Hard to recommend anyone in fantasy.  Maybe St. Brown in ppr with Swift & Hock out, and more than likely playing from behind?

even then, ARSB is kinda the tallest midget in the room (low aDOT, not a ton of YAC and 1 TD on the year)

we did get 3 DBs back this week but it’s hard to see them having any chance today

Lions played solid today.    As much as I have been on Goff he looked the part today and had a very good game.

Really enjoyed the win but now worried about losing the chance to get Hutch or Thibodeaux

Lions blitzed a great deal today and didn't pay for it. Penalties were few and far between. Cardinals were the team that self imploded.

Godwin Igwebuike fumbled again at a critical time. Tough to see this had high hopes for him. Reynolds shows ability to make yards. 112 yards rushing today on 26 carries. Lot of carries. Will wear down, need Williams back.

Also a rarity, watching Lions players go down (Reynolds, Goff, Levi) with leg injuries and yet not be serious.

Having a competent WR like Josh Reynolds helps so much with the passing game, St. Ra has someone to help open underneath routes for him.

I like Godwin but as a RB you just can't fumble. Going forward Reynolds seems like the safest guy to provide depth behind Swift.

Yep Godwin drops down the RB order. Does Jefferson pass him? Jefferson I guess doesn't do well on special teams so helps Godwin.

Also Taylor Decker said he went up to Goff after the game to show his appreciation for staying in the pocket and taking some big hits. Said it helps the o-line build confidence when the QB stays in the pocket like that.

Delighted to hear Decker's comments, supports Goff improving his game. The roughing the passer calls against AZ were a result. I'm guessing Goff has a reputation for being shaky in the pocket which effects everything.

Lions RBs with 75+ yards rushing in each of their first two games with the team:

- Mel Farr (1967)
- Billy Sims (1980)
- Craig Reynolds (2021)

Nice wins, I think AZ has been exposed.

Murray did not look good at all!  Watching him all game he seems too little in the pocket. Passes sailed when he tried to put them over rushing lineman.

he always looks little to me

5’10”

tryjng to think of a successful shorter QB

Brees 6’0”

Tarkenton 6’0”

Bob Berry 5’11”

Sonny Jorgenson 5’11

Russell Wilson 5’11-5/8”

relatively rare for sure

Really nice win for the Lions. I have been quiet here since we all knew it would be a long season. I can officially say now that have I a lot of confidence with the staff. Draft was a hit, FA was successful and the coaches are developing players. The draft could really line up with their needs: elite pass rusher at 1.01/1.02, solid developmental QB option with the Rams pick and a very talented WR at the start of round 2.

I just don't want to lose a top 2 pick. The drop off to pick 3 seems massive.

I will still eat my shorts if Murray is 5'10"
combine

Murray, the dual-threat quarterback out of Oklahoma checked in at 5-foot-10 1/8 and 207 pounds with a hand size, as measured from his pinkie to his thumb, of 9½ inches, at the combine last week. Mar 7, 2019

I agree with you, he looks super tiny. And his noggin looks like a bobble head, way too big for a little guy.

Measuring at 5'10" was the big success for Kyler that locked him into 1.01. There were people predraft worried he was 5'7".

Everybody that meets him says he's shorter and offers to measure, etc. He always declines. I think he's 5'9" or under. I think they didn't press the ruler or measuring stick down on his hair, frankly, and it gave him an inch or two.

Apparently, there are questions: Murray... under 5'-10"?
Oh, according to the beat reporters and sideline reporters (I'm looking at you, Erin Andrews, for spilling the beans) he's under 5'10". The question is, does it really matter in that offense, and I'd say, well, all things constant it matters, but he's pretty darn good.

Anyway, sorry to digress about Murray in the Lions thread. Big win for the Lions. I watched a bunch of it on the Game Mix and they dominated. Big time.

Starters who missed yesterday’s win:

Frank Ragnow
Jonah Jackson
TJ Hockenson
D'Andre Swift
Jamaal Williams
Quintez Cephus
Romeo Okwara
Julian Okwara
Trey Flowers
Jeff Okudah
Jerry Jacobs
Tracy Walker

All under contract next season.

CORRECTION: Walker, their best DB this season, had not been resigned yet. Still….half the starters out is the ultimate next man up.

OLB Charles Harris joins DE Robert Porcher (multiple times) as the only players in franchise history to produce a season with 50 tackles, 7.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles.

Preliminary Week15 Grades:

DETROIT LIONS

Quarterback

Jared Goff has been much better from a clean pocket compared to under pressure throughout his career. Goff stepped up big under pressure in this one, though.

Clean/PressureComp / AttYardsTD / INT

Kept Clean 16/20 129 1-0

Under pressure 5/6 86 2-0

He was charged with two turnover-worthy plays on PFF’s first-run analysis, which will drag down his PFF grade a bit.

Running Back

Craig Reynolds had 32 career offensive snaps entering this game, and he more than doubled that with 42 snaps against Arizona. Reynolds took full advantage of that opportunity on the ground with 92 rushing yards after contact and nine missed tackles forced as a runner.

Wide Receiver/Tight End

Amon-Ra St. Brown and Josh Reynolds led the way for Detroit in the passing game. St. Brown caught eight of his 10 targets, including both contested targets, for 90 yards and a touchdown. Reynolds caught all six of his targets for 67 yards and a touchdown.

No Lions receivers dropped a pass in the game.

Offensive Line

A lot of the credit for Detroit’s success on the ground can be attributed to Reynolds rather than the Lions’ effort as run-blockers. The team averaged just 0.7 yards before contact per rushing attempt against Arizona.

Penei Sewell had one of his worst performances since switching back to right tackle, where he has been excellent. He was charged with a loss on four of his 28 pass-blocking snaps in the game, pending review.

Defensive Line

Charles Harris led Detroit’s pass rush with two sacks and five total pressures in the game, pending review. He also added three tackles for loss or no gain in the run game.

Linebackers

Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Derrick Barnescombined for most of the linebacker snaps for Detroit. Reeves-Maybin was able to get after Kyler Murray as a blitzer, finishing the game with three pressures and a batted pass.

Barnes missed nearly as many tackles (two) as he made (four).

Secondary

Amani Oruwariye made several impressive plays in this game, none more so than his full extension interception of Murray.

Oruwariye allowed five receptions for 94 yards on 11 targets in total with that interception and forced incompletion (pending review). Will Harris also had a strong showing in coverage, allowing just 24 yards into his coverage on six targets.
