I don't know if they had information that Gibbs and Campbell wouldn't be there at their next picks. This feels like you are in a fantasy draft and love two wr that are going in the 5th and 6th round, but you basically tell yourself if you don't get these two players your draft is a failure and then you reach for them in the 3rd and 4th.

I don't like it.

The problem with that analogy is you can't view it as a redraft though because we already have a team. As much as Brad says they don't have a depth chart, they pick the best football players....this shows that is not completely true. They did draft for best fit and needs. Linebacker and a Swift replacement were their priorities.
BTW, Brad was interviewed and he says he has texts and emails indicating there were a couple of teams who were going to take Gibbs before 18. Not sure about Campbell.

Absolutely. In their first two drafts, their dream first pick fell to them and they were much more comfortable taking risks and waiting for a guy like Kirby to fall. This year they panicked. I love their first two picks despite not being optimally obtained.

Story time

At Cedar Falls, Campbell played C on the [basketball] state champs his junior year. Their leading scorer (A.J. Green) was a gunner who went on to have a good career at Northern Iowa and plays for the Bucks developmental squad. Campbell was a banger, mostly known for rebounds and defense, they never ran plays for him. Shot 43% from the free throw line. About a month before the tournament started his coach told him "hey you know we're gonna be in a tight game and they'll start hacking you, because you're the weak link. You gotta be ready for that moment."

He starts staying after practice for like an hour a day working on his FT routine and really grinds on practicing free throws. Sure enough, in the tight championship game, the other team fouls him with like 30 seconds left. Cedar Falls was up by two. And Mr 43% steps up to the line and swishes them both.

The two reached a settlement yesterday - Eagles traded their 94th for the Cardinals 66th. Arizona will also receive the Eagles 2024 5th rounder.

They could have stayed put and drafted Carter and Kancey to fix the run D. for a long time.

They obviously felt Carter's personality was a concern. As did several other teams.

Kancey wasn't going to help the run stopping. He's a tiny interior pass rusher only.

Had Jackpot Jamo not had issues the Lions probably would have rolled the dice on Carter. Can`t have 2 immature problems.

From what I have been hearing Lions could have had Gonzo at 12, Gibby at 18 and still got Campbell with next pick. Who knows?

It isn't an exact analogy. It was just a fancy way to say they reached. Drafting for needs in the first round isn't usually the way to go and was rb really a need? Especially with this deep of a class and the amount of decent and cheap rb free agents still out there. I am extremely confident in saying Campbell would have been there at 34 and possibly at 48.

Best space player in the draft. Could be a spectacular playmaker. Bottom line is they turned the 6th pick into an incremental upgrade at a position which was already cared for, you have to question how much better the team is because of this selection.

1.18 Jack Campbell ILB

He'll rack up a ton of tackles, out of town sportscasters will love talking about this throwback. Could easily see him being a ten year guy with multiple Pro Bowls headed for the ring of honor. Impeccable character and leadership, book smart with a high football IQ. Jersey sales will skyrocket, suburbanites love rooting for the small town guy from the Midwest.

Horrendous use of draft capital on both picks. You don't have to be a math major to grasp this simple concept:

• players on rookie contracts at premium positions (QB, ED, LT, LCB, WR) give you a massive advantage in constructing the remainder of the roster
• high draft picks for devalued positions (RB, ILB) put the franchise at a disadvantage in constructing the remainder of the roster

I think both Gibbs and Campbell will be sensational players, but the opportunity cost of reaching for them makes justification very difficult.

2.34 Brian Branch S/Slot Corner Alabama

• CB Cam Sutton is on a 3-year deal
• S Kerby Joseph has 3 years remaining (as does CB Chase Lucas if he makes the team)
• S Tracy Walker & S Ifeatu Melifonwu have 2 years left
• CJGJ and Moseley are on expiring 1-year mercenary deals
• Slot CB Will Harris, CB Jerry Jacobs and a couple other camp bodies are all on 1-year deals

Branch is the best tackler in the draft at any position. Very instinctual player who plays faster than his testing because he's always in the right place. Presumption here is there is a 100% chance the Steelers take JPJ at 2.32 and the other Cornerbacks will still be there for the next two picks if you really need them. Branch lacks long speed but he's sticky enough you could even move him to RCB and he would be fine in quarters coverage. One of the smartest players in the draft, fits any scheme.

Could also take O'Cyrus Torrence or Steve Avila here to future proof the OL. On the DL side, Edge Tuli Tuipulotu will be there at both 48 and 55. Adetomiwa Adebawore and B.J. Ojulari likely go in the first 10 picks Friday, that #2 Edge ship has sailed.

TRADE - Carolina is light on picks, Detroit has 5 Round 5/6 picks. Send 48, 183 and 194 to the Panthers in exchange for the 39th. Go get your guy.

2.39 Steve Avila G TCU

Started two years at C before moving to G (for team needs), guy they Interviewed at the Senior Bowl, Combine and had in for a Top 30 Visit. Love everything about this player. Future proof RG and acquire a quality backup just in case Frank the tank keeps struggling to stay on the field.

2.55 Keeanu Benton DT Wisconsin

Much more than just a two-gapper, actually has some pretty decent pass rush skills. Siaka Ika NT Baylor is a good backup plan.

Could also pivot to Cedric Tillman WR Tennessee but we already took a receiver at 1.12.

Just saying that at the end of the year, if we win the division and play in the NFC championship, not many people are going to be saying "I wish we had picked Christian Gonzales!"

This is why the process of mock drafts, evals and draft grades is silly. You can't say a team got 2 sensational players and that it was a horrendous draft. There are what, 4-8 actually sensational players that get drafted in the 1st round each year? These guys just say everyone is great. I am listening to podcasts where people are so puzzled how Levis fell. "But he was mocked by everyone to spot top 10" and "rumors had him rising" and "but the draft odds". Guys, Will Levis is not good and it's easy to see. Maybe 5-10 years ago the NFL falls for him but they actually have wised up a bit.

This is all true. Day 2 will have better circumstances. The CB group is still deep and we will jump on one (or two?) of those today. Then we will get some help on OL and DL. I wish there was better WR out there.

My concern year 1 was “well this seems like a Parcels style plan and I’m not [sure] the league hasn’t passed that model by.” However, I thought they were very forward thinking in a lot of their decisions since, and it’s hard to argue with the results and the buy-in they got from players.

I had massive expectations last night that we were going to continue to be on the leading edge by building out premium positions. My belief was our GM is like Howie Roseman or John Lynch - he knows how to build it the right way. Now I don’t know what to think.

I’ve read and listened to a lot of analysis and I’m just having a hard time understanding what they did. Incremental upgrade at HB, thumper who is can’t go sideline to sideline or play in zone coverage. Trying to make it make sense.

I just don’t know how they could watch Nolan Smith’s tape and interview and not conclude that’s a rare player and an elite leader - at a premium position.

If Gonzalez isn’t the flavor you like, fine, trade back, get an impact player at another position (even though at 1.12 it was an amazing value.) Gibbs was the biggest what are you even doing pick of the night. It’s neither a big swing or a safe pick. It’s…just…baffling.

Holmes has earned our support and he was not afraid to go against the grain. I like that the team is developing an identity of going for it and not being afraid of meeting a challenge.

I have been complaining about the Philly 4th down butt pushing play and saying it should be banned. Campbell just says OK we will just have to figure out how to stop it. I’m impressed with that attitude.

I just don’t know how they could watch Nolan Smith’s tape and interview and not conclude that’s a rare player and an elite leader - at a premium position.

If Gonzalez isn’t the flavor you like, fine, trade back, get an impact player at another position (even though at 1.12 it was an amazing value.) Gibbs was the biggest what are you even doing pick of the night. It’s neither a big swing or a safe pick. It’s…just…baffling.

Yeah. It’s interesting the Lions have been saying that their process is a consultative and consensus building one. So those picks were presumably the result of input from all of them.

About Nolan Smith, he almost made it to Round 2 so a number of teams were not in love and liked him less than we did . There were some shortcomings in his game.

I agree. I really like Campbell and think he will be solid but is he going to be a playmaker at LB? Rodriguiz is not a cover LB either.

I like Gibbs too, but KC won the Super bowl starting a 7th rd RB out of Rutgers.

Having the best QB in the game gives you more leeway at the other positions. Tom Brady won multiple SBs with a hodgepodge at RB.

Actually I do appreciate that [Brad is] self-aware and they made those picks knowing it was against the grain. He knew his board was out of sync with consensus and he was comfortable with that knowing the effort they put into the process. Without coming across as defensive he said he’d put more hours into this than the critics and Jahymr and Jack were the right guys.

I did have Smith in Tier 1 with Anderson, Wilson and Murphy. Guess he would have been redundant since James Houston IV already fills that speed bender role. Maybe we get a healthy season out of Paschal, Levi, Charles Harris or Romeo Okwara.
