2025 New Music Thread (5 Viewers)

Kids That Fly - Girl Like Her (Stripped)

Beautiful stripped back version from Manhattan's Kids That Fly, an Alt Pop band that formed out of the University of Connecticut.
Nick Smeriglio's vocals really shine here.

jisokuryClub 지소쿠리클럽 - Megamind (2025 Azit Live)

jsokuryClub is a Seoul, South Korean band who describe the genre of music they do as Fishing Pop or Camping Rock (and yes, that terminology is new to me too). I would file this in the Indie Pop category.

Studio version is pretty good too.

30 songs on Release Radar with this week's fresh new artists such as
  • Talking Heads
  • The Who
  • Bob Dylan
  • Chet Baker
  • The Beatles
  • Fine Young Cannibals
  • Bruce Springsteen
Did Mrs. Travis Kelce release another album this week? Not much new this week worth mentioning, at least on my list. :(

Surprise new album released today by Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee) with her twin sister Allison. Features MJ Lenderman too! It’s under the name Snocaps. Recommended for those who like that Americana/alt-country sound.

Spotify gives you a really bizarre Release Radar of "new" material.

I just looked at my list - all relative newcomers (as opposed to your recommendations) and of my 30 tunes, only a couple from artists that some folks in this forum might recognize, like The Last Dinner Party and Jake Bugg with the rest being moslty cutting edge Indie Rock artists (with a few Jazz Pop thrown in).

Came here to post this, it is the only thing I have listened to all day so far!

I have 2 dead people in my RR this week :oldunsure:

The Belair Lip Bombs - Back Of My Hand

"Australia’s favourite under-the-radar power-pop revivalists are ready for their close-up"

Write of the band/song:

I really liked their album. Melboure guitar pop with lots of hooks.

I suppose should support the local music scene and rep SF pop-punks Spiritual Cramp. Their new album RUDE races through 13 tracks in 31 minutes ripping off Ramones, The Clash, Bloc Party, The Smiths and some others along the way. There's nothing here that's essential or particularly original but the songs are energetic and catchy and there's a duet with Sharon Van Etten.

@Eephus I dare you to listen to Geese cover the New Radicals. (Starting 6:50 mark.)
;)

The second song is alright but I don't dig the cover at all. The band strips all the life from the song.

That’s a shame. I think it’s incredible. Cameron is such a great singer.

I hope it's not another sign of creeping old fogeyism but I just don't get this band. They're not the first buzz band that didn't register with me.
From what you post, I admire your eclectic tastes.

Little Comets - Zzzleeping

"An absolutely lovely song with fairy tale lullaby vibes"

Little Comets is a UK Indie Rock, Indie Pop band, originating from the Newcastle upon Tyne area in the north east of England.

WILSN - When Will Love Come My Way

'The musical arrangement and production fits her unique voice and style"

"Has a retro feel to another time"

WILSN is a Melbourne, Australia R&B Soul artist. She cites Aretha Franklin as a major influence, however she has devloped her own style.

I've repped Nashville band Twen on here before and think their new album is their best one yet.

Their sound is poppy vaguely psychedelic guitar rock that's kind of similar to The Belair Lip Bombs who got mentioned a couple of weeks back. I like how their songs often throw in a little surprise--a guitar break, rhythmic fill or vocal flourish that breaks things up and holds my interest.

Royal Republic - Go West

Swedish Rockers do a cover of a cover.

Tune was originally done by the disco band Village People in 1979. It was a minor hit In the US, #45 US Billboard Hot 100, but made the Top-20 in Belgium, Ireland and the UK.

The Pet Shop Boys did a Synth Pop cover in 1993. Didn't chart in the US but peaked at #2 in the UK, and was #1 in Ireland, Finland, Germany and Iceland.

Royal Republic borrows heavily from The Pet Boys cover (to the point that the Village People original is almost unrecognizable).

Khruangbin - White Gloves ii

A tune so good they just had to make a sequel!

I can sort of get behind Geese, though they're not really my thing but I didn't get people fawning all over Cameron Winter's solo album at all. Bored the hell out of me.

I just saw my 2nd "Top Albums of the Year" list. On November 12th.

Good times.

The schedule of the early "best of" lists usually get driven by the few remaining UK print outlets. Albumoftheyear.org is the best aggregator of year-end lists.

Rough Trade.

That's a statement and also presumably the list you saw, I saw it this AM as well. I haven't posted much in here this year, probably should do a catch up song draft.

I dropped the ball on the mid-year draft. The top albums thread was sucking the oxygen out of the board and then we rolled right into Summerpalooza leeg.

I was thinking about starting a year end song draft the week after (American) Thanksgiving.

I liked 10 of those top 50 so I can’t complain. Although only a few would make my personal top 20.

this shows me how much Spotify has been keeping from me- a bunch of albums from bands I like and listen to... had no idea from spotify that there were new albums. GRMLN otoh- daily reminders.

I don't think they are really interested in what you like, they just want to keep you listening as long as possible.

feels like the algorithm used to really pay attention to things I clicked to listen to and especially things I placed into my playlists and give me more like them- same or similar bands. so much so that when my kids used my account, I'd be ****ed with Katy Perry and pop stuff for weeks.

now, it's the same few bands every week regardless of what I click. and some of them (looking at you Kek'star) I routinely turn off... but still get the freaking things the next week.

and I'm listening all day regardless, but been spending more time going into my catch-all playlist than spotify-fed ones. and even that one- on "shuffle"- seems to be set to play the same damn tunes every time.

No one's going to care about this band, maybe @Jaysus but probably still a stretch, they're my favourite new discovery of the year by a mile. You have to really like emo/Pop-Punk though. They're from an hour or so from me. They are actually really blowing up.

I feel like I've made a hard turn into emo/post hardcore/Pop-Punk (those are all the same genre imo, don't fight me) the past year or so and I think it might be a direct response to every indie band in the world making some country tinged singer songwriter ********.

It's been done to death. I want to rock. I'm Big Thief'd out

Telethon, Dead Bars, and Heart Attack Man are a few from my AoTY list that you may want to check out if you have not already. Telethon is right up near the top for me at this point.

My Release Radar this week was mostly newer artists that I've listened to before and/or have liked, about 17 of the 30 tunes on the list.
Of the lot there was only one that I added to my "Liked Songs" and which was from a band new to me.

Friends of Friends - Happier

Friends of Friends are a Brisbane, Australia trio known for their emotionally raw/atmospheric music that blends Indie Rock, Indie Punk and Shoegaze. I hear a touch of Grunge here too.

White Lies - In The Middle

This was released back in July, but somehow I missed it even though I've been a fan of this UK band for years.

Track has Roxy Music, Talking Heads and early Simple Minds vibes.

You don't need an algorithm to know this one will be picked in the year end draft

I'm shuffling through my 2025 songs I liked playlist in preparation for the FFA year-end song draft. It's a playlist that I add to constantly as I hear new stuff during the year. The good news is that I still like most of the songs but the bad news is I'll need to narrow it down from 233 to 20 (or so).

I'm only at 69 songs including this, as the kids say, banger

Of course, I only add one song per artist to my annual playlist, so that's keeping the number down as there are a few albums where the cutdown was extremely difficult.

I mostly listen to albums instead of playlists, so for me it’s largely a matter of picking 20 songs from about 60 of my favorite LPs/EPS. There will be at least one non-album single though.
