2025 Team Defense & Defense by Committee Thread (1 Viewer)

People can laugh but I get the last one...
-Arizona was not a cornucopia of FF points but I had drafted Baltimore and took AZ as a 1-2 week rental where the match ups of Spencer Rattler and Bryce Young look appetizing

AZ +5
BAL -3
8 point swing and in several leagues I'm going to win by a handful of points, so while many might think AZ was not worth the start, they were a simple Week 1, decent match up
Did it work out? They didn't make a lot of noise so that i agree with but they ended up being better than some defenses you know will be much better overall for the season

And the Cards play at home this week vs Carolina, they weren't very good at JAX, still a decent start this week but I understand why folks will look elsewhere
Arizona also worked well for Survivor Week 1

Cheers!
:banned:
I think I will start them again as well. They held New Orleans in check. Just didn’t get too many sacks or turnovers.

I think the New Orleans plan was to get the ball out quick and play it safe with Rattler. And that doesn’t make for much defensive fantasy points.
So far so good.

Boys there’s a very obvious one this week after watching last night’s game.

Atlanta plays Bryce Young, who gives out sacks and TOs like Halloween candy. Carolina also lost two OL yesterday … Cade Mays is arguably better at C than Corbett, so that might end up a slight positive for Carolina. But nobody on the roster is a better RG than Hunt.

@NFLPlus
The @chargers had 7 players with multiple passes defensed against the Raiders 😱

That's tied for the most in a game (since the stat was first tracked in 1999)

#BoltUp

The @Chargers defense against the Raiders:

⚡️ 15 passes defensed
⚡️ 6 TFL
⚡️ 3 takeaways
⚡️ 0 TDs allowed

No team had ever hit all these marks in a game since both passes defensed and tackles for loss were first tracked in 1999.

Texans managers, how are you feeling after the first couple weeks? They've been decent, but also not good enough to be set-and-forget ROS. They face Jax (neutral matchup) this week, Tenn (positive) next week, and Baltimore (negative) the week after, followed by a bye. I'm thinking I'll hold for two more weeks and then start streaming (don't really want to roster two DSTs this early in the season)

If I were to give up and start streaming this week, options would be:

Indy @ Tenn
KC @ NYG
Atl @ Car
TB vs NYJ (Fields officially declared out)

In that order IMO. I'd have TB over ATL if it weren't for the Kancey injury, I feel much of Tampa's defensive value is in their ability to generate pressure and losing him hurts just enough for me to go with the Falcons. Though their playoff schedule is ridiculously favorable, so if that's relevant to you, I wouldn't be upset if you flip flop.

I'm fading KC. Their defense isn't generating elite fantasy production via sacks + turnovers, and the offense isn't going to dominate time of possession unless it takes a big step forward.

Where would you put SEA and BUF in this group? I liked Buffalo's matchup vs Miami but no Oliver or Milano hurts. They do get NO next week though.

Does the news that Fields is confirmed out and TB will be facing T-Immobile impact your view at all, or were you already assuming that?

BUF
SEA
Then my list.

Miami is atrocious. Seattle may have a top 5 D ROS. Hard choices, but I like both above the aforementioned options, especially for longer-term usage.

Already knew Fields wasn't going to plat, but I think Bucs v Jets has the potential to be too run-heavy for the upside of getting juicy defensive plays. I doubt they scheme an aggressive game plan for Tyrod, so while I doubt the Jets score more than 14 points, they probably won't give up a lot on turnover chances. But ATL v TB is still a close call for me; I like the upside play of ATL potentially scoring above the baseline 10, even if I "believe" in the Panthers offense a little more. I'm no expert, so go with your gut!

I have DEN and had planned on starting them most of the year. However, I have the space to drop someone like Gainwell (my 6th RB) for a 2nd defense this week. Should I sit DEN for one of the following?

BUF vs MIA (tonight)
TB vs NYJ
IND @ TEN

As I'm typing this, I went to grab BUF and someone had snagged them 30 seconds prior.

So..... TB or IND over DEN this week, or no?

Drafted and played MN the first two games. But Chargers and Patriots are on the wire. Tempted to pick one of them for the next 2 games and then roll the dice with matchups the rest of the year

This is a hard question to answer without a lot more information, and you're probably the only one who can make this call. Not sure how many worthwhile responses you'd get on here that would be able to evaluate all the parameters.

But here's how I'd start looking at it....

1) league scoring: going off of, say, Vegas implied yardage, points, and turnover over/unders, by how much is TB or IND projected to outscore DEN this week in your league's scoring system?
2) what do you think are the ranges of those scores? Does one team have a wider +/- bell curve around that projection?
3) how to other correlation factors in your lineup and your opponents lineup impact this decision? Do you have any players on the Chargers, Broncos, Bucs, Jets, Colts or Titans? Does your opponent? Are you favored in your matchup or need some help and luck? Would starting one of those defenses affect your game score if it over- or under- performed by way of affecting your opponents score? (that is, you start the Colts and your opponent has Cam Ward, and Cam Ward goes nuclear for 5 TD passes simultaneously improving his score and hurting your DST, that's much more impactful than if he's got a different QB un-correlated to your DST)
4) Once all that is taken into account, ask, why is Gainwell on your roster? Is he injury insurance for someone you have? Is he a lotto ticket in case his role increases? What's he worth to you in terms of riding the bench this weekend? What are the odds that his role increases/Warren's role decreases if something happened in the game this weekend? What are the odds of that happening? What are the odds of that happening to any of the other RBs on your roster, which you make Gainwell potentially useful to you in the near future if one of them got hurt? Do you think if you dropped him you'd be able to pick him back up if this play backfires? How likely is another team to claim him? How's his schedule later in the season if you held him, could he potentially be useful?

A lot to think about. A lot to consider. There are many more factors that go into making these close calls.

Same boat here. Chargers actually have a pretty nice schedule all the way up to their bye week 12. NE has Buffalo in a few weeks but their schedule also looks pretty good until they get Buffalo and Baltimore after bye week 14. MN has some good matchups until their bye week 6 and then it’s pretty bad for a bit so I’m thinking of dropping them now for LAC or NE since I don’t want to carry 2 defenses.

Thanks for the response.

Gainwell was someone I added simply because Burrow went down, and in a 16 team league where we start 2 RB, depth at that position is hard to come by. I have five bench spots in this league, and four are occupied by RB's. I have Gibbs, Kamara, and Tracy (as well as Ray Davis and Woody Marks). I'm an injury/bye week situation away from having to start one of my bench guys. And, with Tracy trending downward in touches, and Gainwell surprisingly being the clear RB2 in PIT, I'm not 100% certain Gainwell wouldn't be a better bye-week filler than Tracy/Davis/Marks by the time that happens (which could be any time, but best case is Week 8 when Gibbs is on bye).

Yeah, it's a close call, and I'll probably stick with DEN, who has scored more than TB (basically double) through two weeks, despite not having dominant performances in either. Sometimes I've found it's better to just stick with the stronger overall defense than to try to play matchups with mediocre defenses against what you think are bad teams.

Thanks again.

i'm pretty much just going to roll with the Chargers and then swap them out for the best option on the wire at their BYE.

by that time, most of the teams will be checked out and there should be some good defenses to choose from.

Wish this was the case in my league. For some reason they adore defenses? I'm seeing teams drop guys like Gordon and Stroud but have second and third defenses on their bench. It's like they think 'I need to replace this guy he sucks' but don't think that they can drop a D for that replacement.

Anyway, in my league when teams check out, they do so with 2 or 3 defenses on their roster and streaming becomes much harder.

I just checked during the TNF game because there were so few defenses in one of my leagues. There is one team with THREE defenses and THREE QBs. It’s a 12 team with a 6 spot bench. And they roster Rashee Rice. Three teams are going two DSTs. I knew it was weird when my only options for this week were the Colts that I’m not using a waiver on.

Buffalo d **** the bed
Yeah. I was hoping they were an unheralded hold, due to the Buffalo offense overmatching everyone on the schedule and forcing opposing teams to play risky catchup ball all season. Tonight was not as expected.

Going to have to make a decision about dumping them and grabbing the chargers while they’re still available on my WW, or viewing tonight as an aberration against a divisional rival.

Key battle: Miami is #2 in blitz rate... but #31 in pressure rate when blitzing

They’ve played Daniel Jones and Drake Maye... but have just 1 sack on 28 blitzes

Josh Allen is one of the hardest QBs to track down:

#3 lowest sack rate (2.7%) and sacked on just 9% of pressures

the Dolphins blitzed on 41% of Josh Allen's dropbacks

despite that high blitz rate, they recorded just a 9% pressure rate

their lowest in any game since 2018
