40th Anniversary: Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (1 Viewer)

It really bums me out that with all the great Lightfoot songs out there, this is the one that people seem to remember the best.

Why? It's a very touching tribute to people who tragically lost their lives too soon.

Gitche Gumee ain't no joke in November...

I was at the Yooper Dome two years ago watching local High School football playoffs.. After the game, we drove to Mackinaw City where we had a hotel room..

Leaving Marquette we were advised to take 41 South to 2 to get away from a nasty storm blowing in on Lake Superior.. I figured "how bad can it be?"..

I've lived in Michigan my entire life and have driven through some terrible Winter weather.. so we took 28 East out of Marquette towards Munising, along the shores

of Lake Superior.. Let me tell you, I've never driven through anything even close to that before.. Complete whiteouts where it looked like somebody threw a blanket

over the car..had to stop completely. Never passed or saw another car or person.. Thankfully the roads have rumble strips in the center and on the side of the road.

I drove for awhile just by "feel".. drift to the left until I hit the rumble strip, back to the right until I hit the rumble strip and so on..

By the time we got to Mackinaw City, I was whipped.. emotionally and physically.. A normal 3 hour drive took close to 7..

Don't mess with Mother Nature... she always wins..

Approaching the end:

When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck Sayin' "Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya"

At seven PM a main hatchway caved in

He said, "Fellas, it's been good to know ya"
