49ers extend QB Smith's contract (1 Viewer)

Just read another article in the Chronicle about how JT O'Sullivan is also being given a legit chance to start. Wouldn't be surprised at all if Smith doesn't win the job.

In Alex's last 12 healthy starts, the Niners are 7-5. Write him off if you want.
This is like saying Grossman was the MVP in 2006 because the Bears made the Super Bowl.Giving a W/L record for QBs without accounting for talent around them is a massively flawed argument.
It really isn't a good measure for a QB, but look at Smith's situation; it's very unique: He became a starter right out of college to the worst team in the league; had to change the TYPE of Coordinator in his transition from college to the nfl; has also had to adjust to different passing offenses every year since he came into the league. How about no receivers at the caliber of a TO or Moss in his career, but still fighting for wins. He had to run for his life ON THE FIELD because there was no o-line 2 out of 3 years. I think he did all this before his 24th birthday. WHAT WERE WE ALL DOING WHEN WE WERE 21 AND 22 YEARS OLD? Noone should put Alex Smith down at all because of the past year. Its never good when almost 350 lbs. falls on your throwing shoulder. Give him credit- he's working hard to be a good quarterback at 24. He's definitely a smarter QB after his experiences and Martz will bring out his best this first year. It will be fun watching because Hill is awesome too. They both can win if they have the chemistry.
Homerism at its best!
It may be homerism, but there are some good points in there. Also, Smith was the #1 pick almost by default in a weak draft that was especially weak at QB. He was younger then normal, and was KNOWN TO BE RAW. Everyone knew it would take a few years to develope the guy..and yet here we are just a couple of years later ready to write him off when we KNEW HE WOULD FAIL AT FIRST, especially under the given circumstances. I'm not saying the guy will make it, but it seems way too soon, and grossly unfair, to say he definately won't. He should have been carrying a clipboard until THIS season.

Under contract through 2010 now

Hmmm... I remember when the Texans committed to David Carr after new offensive guru Gary Kubiak was coming to town following a string of bad OCs. Now its playing out with Martz and Smith. Any reason to think Martz will be more successful with Smith than Kubiak was with Carr?
Hey Bloom, great job on the dynasty stuff!!As an avid 49er fan I am skeptical with regards to Alex Smith. The major difference as I see it between Smith and Carr is that Smith has yet to develop the habit of running at top speed to the sideline on every other play. I have some serious doubts, but maybe Martz can turn this guy around.

hopefully teams use Alex Smith as yet another example of why to never draft a QB thats been in a Spurrier's/Meyer's/June Jone's/ type funky spread offense. What those Coaches teach/call in college for their QB's ruins them for the NFL. Tebow to be next bust picked in 09' or 2010
Smith <<< Tebow, and they're not even similar.
Lets not get ahead of ourselves. Its almost like running around with a Tag Line "Hillary in 08", then it just magically disappears when it looks like she's toast. Tebow has a lot of promise but he's started ZERO NFL games and your assuming he gets drafted. Think QB "Andre' Woodson" NFL 08 draft, he was going to be top flight draft pick, wont shock me if this guy falls all the way out of the draft and is an un-drafted Free agent pickup. So you may be correct in your analysis but right now Smith is an NFL QB so the logic today is still Smith >>>>>> Tebow.
